  • Japan has one of the lowest obesity rates in the world along with one of the longest living populations. Many assume these two stats relate but why are Japanese people so thin in the first place? We dig into 10 of the best reason why Japan manages to stay so thin.
Even though I thought I knew the answer before I came to this country, my research took me in a completely different direction. It turns out Japan has a lower obesity rate because of attitude, as opposed to food. Japan has a unique culture, diet and landscape that all contribute to the waistlines of the Japanese people.

Japanese work out alot, so much walking. I walk alot in America so I actually gained weight on my 2nd trip to Japan because food was so cheap. My first trip I lost weight because I was poor and couldn't afford much food on my trip.
It is Amazing though that Japan is so thin, when compared to the US and EU their regulations on preservatives and additives are much less. Look at any Japanese Pastry or Candy and the additives are truly horrifying

People in the comments are saying it’s genetics but in the 60,70s,80s,90s people were skinner ate less, and more active in America.

Yeah I agree, genetics plays a small role in metabolism and the like but obesity stats take into account height and other genetic factors. Obesity rates in America have increased over the decades for sure and I believe most of it is because of the quality of food, attitude towards food and quantity of exercise! 😃

Why don't Japanese people become obese? The answer is because we eat rice as our staple food. Rice is slow to digest, and the nutrients and calories taken into the body are consumed as they are during daily activities, so they do not turn into fat. Furthermore, because digestion is slow, you don't even think about having a snack afterwards. In Japan, this is expressed by the word Hara-mochi.(腹持ち) Compared to meat, fish, dairy products, and the same grains such as barley and soba, rice is digested more slowly and does not leave you hungry. This is why Japanese people don't snack between meals. If you are suffering from obesity, why not try replacing the staple food similar to Japanese food with rice? If you consider rice only in terms of calories, it's no different from other foods, but it digests slowly and doesn't make you hungry, so you can eat less and less often. Japan also has a unique Japanese way of eating food called Ichishiru sansai.(一汁三菜One soup and three dishes) This is a dish of soup (miso soup in Japan), rice, and three types of meat and vegetables. This constitutes one meal composition. Based on these cases, it is thought that obesity is low in Japan.

If america had anywhere near the quality of food japan had for the average person america would be healthier.
Eating habits in japan are also a major factor like you say. Small plates and genes as well. Asian ppl in general are smaller than caucasian and african americans

I considered mentioning genes but it’s one of those things that’s hard to measure! However quality and eating are so obviously different and easily measurable. 😃

It has to do with genetics, exercise and food consumption.

I do think genetics plays a role but it’s harder to measure. I did mention exercise and what you eat can be just as important as how you eat and how much you eat. I tried sticking with the points that are specific to Japanese people and are measurable. 😃

Maybe their genetics are different - they accumulate less fat, but still get the same illnesses.
