The fourth episode of Sailor Moon was about Usagi thinking she is too fat. She went on a diet, and then fainted. Her friend Motoki found her and said that she is beautiful just the way she is. I love this episode because it teaches you shouldn't care about what others think about your weight. Just eat a healthy amount of food. True love isn't about looks.
Totally agree, I am married to an Asian guy and quite often people in this SE Asian country we live ask me if my husband hasn't requested me to diet?? I am overweight since a few years ago yes, but the whole request thing.. Actually in English it is more like forced. My husband would never do that to me luckily.
Living your whole life in a misogynist society will do that, Japan is ranked notoriously low for women's rights and equality despite the quality of life
My heart broke when she said her bf told her he was ashamed to stand next to her AND SHE AGREED WITH HIM like oh yeah he should’ve been ???? No no no. You’re so pretty stop that. I don’t care if the guy is a 10 (which is very doubtful) you don’t say or even THINK that thought smh who does that guy think he is. The disrespect.
I can't imagine saying that to someone, the callousness and disregard for their feelings, or probably actually intentional emotional harm. Also I don't even understand why it could possibly matter so much
Unfortunately it is a very cultural thing in Japan. Image and how you present yourself in Japan is of the upmost importance. While it may have sounded really bad in a western view, it's not the case in Japan. Not condoning it by any means, but just highlighting why this is the case in Japan
Today, my friend told me that she was insecure of her legs because they were very skinny. This was to my surprise because I always felt that my legs looked too fat, and I wanted my legs to look like hers. It made me realize that we’ve both been feeling terribly insecure due to caring too much about the beauty standards. Instead, we should love ourselves the way we are❤
yeah, we really can't win because even when others want what we have, we want what others have. honestly i love my long skinny legs, until my own friends poke fun at my legs when we took a group photos bcs i was the skinniest amongst them. idk if i should feel bad abt myself or regret having friends that would shame me like that
I want to be friends with the woman with the umbrella. She's down-to-earth, realistic, very aware, fair, and knows not to be maliciously disrespectful! Hearing her way of thinking is so refreshing to me. I bet it would be fun to have deep conversations with her, even if the conversation could be about nonsense.
It's important to take into concideration that weight without height is meaningless. Every height has it's own healthy weight range, it's called bmi. Also I think i've read certain Asian populations have a naturally lower weight compared to other populations. The girl who said she was 168cm who weigh 50kg is actually underweight, and her ideal weight is even lower at 48 kg.
@@lyria5892 the issue also is that most asians and im speaking as one, the majority of my family members and friends are all shorter, little muscle mass, very small boned so therefore they will usually be less in mass which is what weight essentially is especially if we're using KG. I on the other hand think that the culture is the issue here and that asian women should go and lift some weights and improve their overall muscle mass, bone density which helps with their bones when they age from breaking easily, and work on their heart health through mild to moderate cardio instead of being obsessed with being super skinny and small.
@@linda33528 Agree, strength training is very good for us and improves health. When it comes to keeping bones strong, I’ve read that soy products benefit our bones. I agree that culture is to blame for why women want to look a certain way, not just in Asia, the western world is also very toxic in that regard. We just have to accept that we are all different and look different, and encourage each other to eat well and exercise, but not in any excessive way. Eating cake and pizza sometimes is also very much a part of a healthy life, imo. Parents need to talk nicely to their kids about their bodies, never shame them. Also, studies show that "dieting" doesn't really work, it lowers metabolism and can even mess with other hormones as well. Parents should keep that in mind before telling their child to go on a "diet". The biggest loser study is very interesting, they tested the contestants metabolism (a weight loss show) before the show started and many years later. Most if not all of them gained all their weight back, plus their metabolism dropped by a lot and was still suppressed to a much much lower point years later. Imo, the key to a healthy body is regular exercise and everything in moderation, then our bodies will be happy and thriving. It all starts with giving our kids good healthy habits from the start.
This is soo stupid , the guy probably saw how his girlfriend is not living a proper and disciplined life and told his girlfriend to lose weight and you fat activist just here to spread hate on people encouraging healthy lifestyle 🤦🏻♀️🙄
As someone who's struggled with an eating disorder for over a decade after being bullied throughout childhood (in an Asian society), this is really difficult to watch. It's sad that these beautiful women are made to feel like they're not good enough. While I no longer engage in disordered eating behavior, to this day I still suffer from long-term health complications from it. I wish I could go back in time and ignore the peer pressure and nasty comments. Being strong and healthy is SO much more important than pleasing the shallow people around you. If someone calls you fat, f them. Love yourself and your body!
@bloo01 Thanks so much! :) Health issues I deal with daily: slowed metabolism, chronic fatigue, swallowing problems, digestive issues, lack of hunger signals/appetite. Due to these problems, it's very hard for me to eat enough calories for my body to function normally. My food choices are very limited because MANY foods give me digestive symptoms. I have to count calories to make sure I eat enough or I feel very ill and weak. I don't have enough energy to do everything I want/need to do. I have GERD which means I deal with nausea, sore throat and poor sleep pretty much daily. I can't eat the foods I used to enjoy because they'd trigger symptoms. I stopped being able to drive safely (because I'd get tired and lose concentration) and do simple things like go shopping on my own let alone work a job out of the house. I want SO much to live a normal life but I can't. It's been like this for many years. I can't say that every single one of these problems is due to my eating disorder past but I'm quite sure most of them are. You can't deprive your body of the necessary nutrients and energy for that long and not expect to do some damage. And to think that I got the eating disorder because I wanted to lose weight! All the calorie restriction that I did during my ED has slowed my metabolism so much. Now I can even gain weight while eating too little for normal body function. It's so not worth it. :(

Lived in Japan for many years. People there are way too hung up on weight. Exercise is almost non existent there as well. It would be nice if people were more concerned about health, instead of image.
they don’t even have to worry about being weigh to much cause the amount of food they offered in the restaurants are already so small and tiny compared to other countries.
Do you mean that they dont go to the gym or tend to do sport ? I'm already slender but have tried to lose weight by working out more, though it seems I can't because the fat that was here become muscle I guess
Japan is so walkable that exercise really isn't a concern imo. North America in particular (Canada and the US) is the complete opposite in that the urban cities are car centric and prefer sprawling, which really limits the amount of walking you would do on the daily. There''s a reason why the US obesity rates are higher, and it's not just because of their diets.
I've been there a lot and yeah the gym craze of the west didn't arrive in Japan at all. Only few people work out. They control their weight through food / dieting and don't work out. So most are slim and weak.
Interesting. I often worry about my very unhealthy American family (everyone has many medical issues due to overeating, fast food and sugar) and it has made me spend most of my free time for years on working out and meal prep. I've lost some of my own personality along the way. It's important to find the balance that brings you what will make YOU the most fulfilled in life.
I'm a Japanese Singaporean. I overeat and love fast food and sugar. Addicted to classic Coke(with full sugar, I'm not too fond of the less sugar). But my weight is 38kg, height is 154cm, a mom of 2. Always wanted to gain & be at least 45kg. My specialist/GP did bloodwork & everything, I'm considered underweight but super healthy.
In Japan, this kind of criticism is common. I have Japanese friends who have had STRANGERS come up to them in public spas and tell them that they would look great if they lost some weight, as if they think they're doing them some kind of favor. And these friends are not fat at all, they're just not skeletally thin, which still seems to be the fashion in East Asia
Lmao strangers?! I literally don't believe this for a second. One thing that strangers do in japan is respect boundaries. I've been to Japanese bathhouses way too many times to know that you barely even make eye contact with strangers lol
@@kidanaoki1947 Yeah, that sounds pretty weird. I was born and raised in Japan for 25 years, and I've never had a stranger talk to me. That's how rare it is for a stranger to talk to you in Japan. I don't know if this story is false or true, but yeah, even if it were true, it's not common at all.
I remember reading and having been told that certain workplaces enforced certain weight standards and there was consequences for the employer if employees were overweight. I'm only halfway through the video but I'm surprised it's not mentioned yet. EDIT 10 seconds after I posted this one woman did mention employers telling employees to lose weight.
If you walked into any business and the majority of its employees were fat it would reflect badly upon the business, it would show an absolute lack of professionalism. I wouldn't do business with a company like that because I would assume that such a company doesn't have any standards, especially when it comes to their employees. These things matter because although you shouldn't judge something or someone solely by its or their appearance, in reality judging things or people solely by their appearance is perfectly natural. If we didn't do that then it would be very difficult to make choices where complete information needed to make such a choice isn't given
@@rose-gl4io It's not always easy to determine that. You can't determine the performance of a company's employees you haven't engaged with and I definitely am concerned if I do business with a company and their employees look unprofessional. I won't do business with a company like that and don't tell me what I should concern myself with.
@@rose-gl4io A fat employee is a lazy employee and they aren't as productive as an employee that isn't fat and customers also judge a company by the appearance of their employees (it's not the only criteria). This is why companies have rules concerning their employees physical appearance. A business that hires fat people could be seen as a business that hires lazy people or that hires people who aren't up to standard (first impressions count alot in securing new customers). A customer who doesn't like the first impression of a company's employees is less likely to purchase anything from that company because it implies that the company lacks standards
I see none of you have ever lived in Asia. There are defiantly beauty pagent jobs there. Airlines, front desk positions, department store clerks, many others that are low brain power jobs that they just need a pretty face for. Remember on Japanese resumes you will put your picture on the top right side or the application form. Yes, they will pick the 'lookers" out and give them jobs. If you think they don't have standards your wrong, and if you let yourself go they will show you the door... SOP all day long.
Let me tell you my experience. I was born in a South East Asian country and was quite underweight my whole life (around 43kg/93lbs when I was 18). But I went overseas for a while and gained some weight during those few years. When I went back to visit my parents and friends, I weighted 50kg/110lbs. I thought I was quite fit, not fat but not skinny either. At that point I was eating healthily and went training quite oftern. Despite that, I got criticized for my weight a lot, by my parents, relatives and even my best friends 🥲. It depressed me so much that I had to starved myself plenty of times afterwards when I had left the country. I was so insecure and kept beating myself up for eating a tiny bit of sugar. Anyway, took me a while to stop caring and start taking care of myself. Never felt so good physically and mentally when I stopped listening and living by those standards. You can't change people's opinions of you but you can change your opinions on yourself, only you decide which one is more important.
In the past, I always covered my face with a thick layer of make-up and edited my photos with photoshop. When I was taking a photo of my friend I asked her if she wanted me to photoshop her as well. She told me, you look how you look and there is nothing you can and should change at all. Ever since then, everytime I am beaten up because of physics, I think about that phrase and it makes me feel better. I am wearing no make up anymore in my casual life, nor do I care what others think of me.❤ I eat what I want and I dress how I want
Just for the record, there are a LOT of men that are more attracted to women that don’t wear makeup. We like natural beauty rather than anything that appears fake. Glad u were able to overcome that stress. Your friend made a life-changing statement.
@@packattackallday While I agree there are guys who like a more natural look, "appears" is the key word. Many men have no idea the subtleties of make up and what they think is natural looking is still way more make up than they think just to even out your skin tone. What's more important isn't some guys attention. It's her being happy with herself.
5’6 106 pounds on most Caucasian frames is VERY slender if you aren’t born with a very tiny frame. I am 5’6 and suffered from an ED for most of my life, currently it’s not flaring up , but my organs potassium and electrolytes all dipped or started shutting down when I got to 106 and I had to go to hospital for three week. It wasn’t even intentional. Just needed control and was stressed and underweight.
Yeah I think in Japan a lot of girls are too skinny. They have the opposite problem of the west imo. We probably could do to be a bit skinnier and they could do to be a little less obsessed with being skinny
That's exactly my height and weight, and I have a GI disorder that makes eating painful. My 6 year old niece recently asked me "why are you so thin auntie", damn that stung 😞 I'd give everything to have the ability to be fat, to not be in chronic pain for 18 years like now. I look at fat people and envy them. Must be nice going out to restaurants with your friends and family without worrying how much pain it's gonna cause you
To the girl that talked about her parents and grandparents that worried she was too thin: my girl they have a right to be worried. If you get sick and you're too small you have a lower chance of surviving that illness because your organs, especially your heart, are already being stressed. It is the same thing when you are too heavy as it forces your organs to work harder. Neither extreme is healthy for your body and both stresses it out. You should aim to be a healthy weight for your height, activity level and bone density. As you're Asian and Asians tend on average to have smaller bone structures than other races, it's okay to be on the lower end of that height -weight scale if you so desire. However, it's absolutely not okay to be under it. You are not prettier because of it. It is not pretty to look sick. You are a woman you're suppose to have curves stop thinking actually having curves is being fat.
Weight do play a role to stay healthy.precisely called 'body fat percentage'. Secondly, higher weight(obsessed) do extra burden to body caused inconvenient Common sense
Honestly, every time i hear about Japan standards is always quite shocking. Most people do seem to live for others instead of being satisfied with who they are. Of course is not something that only happens in Japan but it feels like is way more heavy in their culture. But that girl needs to leave that toxic boyfriend asap. "Its embarrassing to stand next to you" is not only a very selfish thing to say but display zero care or love towards the other. Its scary how she treated like a common thing.
When I was in my freshman year of highschool i weighed 110lb at 5’2. I am now 18 years old and currently 96lb. I too fell victim to beauty standards and what not but Im starting to realize the consequences. I’m very tired and depressed. I hope these girls know that losing weight isn’t the key to beauty or happiness. It just makes you stuck in an endless cycle of being miserable.
Is it a beauty standard or a health concern? Possibly both. Which leads to a better outcome in life in terms of health? Depending on how you manage the weight, the latter is better. The former can be argued to be stressful on the mind but it can be too to be just a matter of perception.
@@aeishthnydawhen you think losing weight will make u beautiful In a obbsesve way it most of the time goes downhill as u lost weight u look better then before but not the kind of better you thought, that is when it starts to get bad
omg i relate to you so much. i got my puberty fast in middle school so i was around your height, 5'1, in middle school, weighing around 115 pounds, but now i am 20 and currently same height, at 98 pounds, like you, again. I fell victim of beauty standards and fat shaming from my grandma. She had just arrived to the states from China, and told me I was fat and had too big of an ass and clothes won't fit me even though she bought me many snacks. I felt really bad about my body then and so i started to go swimming and lost an healthy amount of weight, like 5 pounds. But it didn't stop there. At some point I got to weighing 93 pounds. So in total I lost 20 pounds and was underweight for a long while. I've gain a little bit this year and I'm starting to feel like I should eat more nowadays.
Maybe you are a guy, but you aren't a man. A man has boundaries and is aware of his needs. Telling your girlfriend that she is making herself unattractive to you is something that should be communicated long before dumping her.
@KPOPLoopParts There are parts of human attraction that are within our control and things that are beyond our control. Things within our control are generally not assessed by the same criteria that things beyond our control would be. Nonetheless, people decide to move on from aging boyfriends and girlfriends frequently, which is why if you want durability in your relationship, you should be aiming for marriage and children from your dating. If all you offer is youth and beauty, then I wouldn't be offended when people decide to find better alternatives when they are available. A lot of women think all they have to do is show up and they are owed a relationship. Being respectful, appreciative, supportive, kind, charming, and creating an environment a man would want to be a part of is important. We live in such misandrist times that the concept that men might have needs that are worthy of being considered seems to not get any attention.
@@dustyfloormop They are literally not starving. Japanese people have objectively better statistics in terms of longevity and overall health in spite of consuming large quantities of salt. If you have been deluded into thinking fit and fat are not mutually exclusive, I feel bad for you. And I hear this objectification bs frequently. It's essentially a way to pathologize completely normal sexual priorities of men who are visually attracted to women. From a distance, no one is viewed as a comprehensive human. Yet somehow, we have to discern who we select to spend effort to get to know better. This is a completely normal sexual selection process and any person who spends effort feeling guilty or victimized over it is a moron. No one said that women should only cater to men. But if women are interested in attracting a man of high value, understanding and not violating the things that make you a respectable partner to men are what you should do. If you prefer a life of frivolous hook ups and dirt bag/pushover guys, then by all means, continue thinking that men have no sexual priorities worthy of consideration.
"You get told if you're fat. You get told if you're skinny. You can't win." So sad, but very true. As an American, I've never weighed more than 40kg while being 149cm tall and I have gotten comments on my weight since I was a child. In high school my friends mocked me for having small breasts and being "child size". When I started working as an adult, female coworkers would tell me I'm too skinny and ask what I eat and scoff at me. I've never had a man comment on my weight. Only my boyfriend who tells me how much he loves me regardless of my size. I think women perpetuate beauty standards worse than men do. We just blame it on men because we don't wanna admit our own fault.
The last time a person called me fat was kindergarten (even then I make sure to smack him senseless). Cuz, kids dont know any better. Then everybody grows up, since then nobody has called me fat, ever. I myself know that I am chubby. So, commenting on peoples bodies is def a sign of low upbringing. Its just not done, awkward, and impolite.
I am Japanese. This video is real. Every week or every month someone scolds me about my body line. But I'm not fat. BMI is 20. Japanese society tries to make women morbidly thin. Women have to be careful. A boyfriend or someone takes away a woman's confidence and controls her mind. Be smart.
@@MsJaponicus you can think of the “Japanese weight culture” as a system to maintain the health of the people who belong to the society. Therefore, you don’t have to be sorry for the culture ,rather you should be proud of it.
There’s already so much for people to care about in a competitive society and the high pressure for them to conform beauty standards becomes an additional burden
@@librarycard3748here is a difference, of the fat critique... when your gf is in healthy BMI range VS. Overweight to going obese gf. She is the 1st scenario. There is societal pressures already, don't add more stress to your girl.
Yup.. As a gal who has been both overweight and underweight (actually around the weight that I wanted to be at at the time), you really can't win. People would tell me that I needed to lose weight or that I looked sick/tired. All I can say is, truly keep the goal of health in mind and live a life that you enjoy. Eat what you want to eat but exercise, sleep, etc., well to be... not what and how ANYONE else wants you to be and look but to be happy and be the best you! (p.s. i so, SO know it's easier said than done but with time...)
What people don't seem to understand is that it's not about weight but your bodyfat percentage Let's look at it in this perspective: look at a athlete for example they look way leaner than the average person but there is a very high chance that they weigh more than the average person purely because of their muscle development This is because muscle is denser than fat So surely looking thinner might be your goal but starving yourself until you become a skeleton is not the way to do it All you need to do is regularly work out and do a proper diet that provides your body the nutrients to help your body develop faster This way you're gonna feel a lot better and healthy than simply starve yourself
I don't think ppl from other countries can understand this, but the lady who's talking about her bf is probably proud of her relationship like "we're so close that we can say honest opinions about us each other." (it's just how I felt and I hate that I felt this way. I grew up in JP as a woman btw 😅) I saw some ppl commented "no worries, you're 10 out of 10." or like "the girls should be more confident." but these are missing the point. This mindset of Japanese women is must be blamed for men and all kinds of media which take advantage of patriarchy all the time.
I'm a guy in the US and I am pretty sure if I had told any of my past girlfriends to "lose weight its embarring to stand next to you", they all would have slapped or even punched me and the dumped me lol. Such a contrast.
I understand because people normally wouldn't say those things to you so directly in Japan or wouldn't be that mean, just people so close to you would have the courage to tell you things like "u should be ashamed of yourself because of your weight", it's so strange to the foreigners because it's the mindset that Japan has unfortunately, maybe because of tatemae
It definitely sucks that in the Japanese society (not the only ones though) they severely peer pressure women to constantly lose weight even if they gained a couple pounds.
@@trianjezraellumontad7661yeah, I could’ve sworn the question was about weight and not their relationship. The social projection bias is nuts in these comments.
Am I too naive to hope that people everywhere start focusing more on health than image? Just eat in moderation everything you like, try different foods and cuisines, be active (whatever works for you) enjoy life and don't stress focusing on fitting a standard as long as you are healty!
We should worry more about muscle mass, strength, flexibility and the way our body serves us in our daily tasks than worry about being skinny. Why would anyone want to constantly be just at the lower limit of "normal" weight, when any time one could go into the hospital for one week and not be allowed to eat? One would be glad for the "extra" weight then.
I`m Japanese woman. One day, when i was walking outside, the stranger said,''Don`t eat snacks cause you`re fat!!'' to me. At that time,I had 59kg,my height is 166cm. I felt down so i started to do exercise and control how much get calories from foods. Currently my weight is between 53 to 54kg but i'm still not enough. Because most of people who like my favorite clothes shops, they are more slim than me. I wish Japanese society accept each style. I feel relax when i go to other country. I can wear my favorite clothes like short pants, more tight clothes like that even though i'm not teenager. Nobody care about my outfit! It's really nice☺
There’s actually a serious problem in Japan with women who are pressured by society to be thin that once they get older they have no muscle or bone density and struggle to do basic things and are generally very unhealthy. just because you’re thin doesn’t mean you’re healthy but unfortunately it’s one of the main categories even doctors look at here….. I’ve been told that at 170cm I should be under 60kg which as a active and muscular person would be physically impossible. It’s actually crazy
The sad part is without having muscle it's harder to gain as you get older and fat is easier to gain. So while starving themselves now (and assuming not working out to gain muscle) they'll go through the same vicious cycle when they're older or become depressed
Yeah it's wild to me that a professional would ever recommend that! Im around the same height (give or take an inch) and at the moment weight around 52kg. Its awful. I feel disgusting, bruise from pretty much air hitting me, black out, and it's honestly hard to look at myself in the mirror. I was already struggling with my appetite but i recently got seven teeth pulled and its made me drop weight even further to where I am now. Im just hoping i can finally start eating actual food again soon 💀.
60kg is the ideal weight for 170cm for women (it would be 70 for men). I'm 159 and have 47kg, 46 if I'm crazy active. And I have very visible muscle definition.
Bruh... I'm planning to stay in Japan for 3 months from December on, and although I feel their beauty standards are really sad and bad, too, I'm worried I will feel even uglier than I do now. That's so much of a focus on looks, it's concerning.
6:53 When I went to Japan, I did notice that the seats were quite small and slim! I'm Asian and even in my own countries the seats on trains are a little wider, so you wouldn't have to touch anyone as you sat down, unless some guys are manspreading and just completely obstructs the seats between them. I went to Tokyo this feburary, and with all the puffy jackets and stuff, everyone was literally bumping shoulders and arms 😂 My ideal weight is actually around the same with these girls (who are absolutely stunning btw!!) I'm 162cm and want to be 45kg or less. But regardless, bigger bodysizes are definitely looked down and made fun of, especially if you live in Asia where women are told to loose weight regularly and be as skinny as they can to look more "beautiful".
i am asian and reminded im larger everytime i go visit. i also am older and our bodies change. i dont like the shaming and the eyes on train. you feel it.
Wow, that was really mean of her boyfriend, to tell her that she should be ashamed and that he is embarrassed to be next to her because she gained weight. That is really mean.
Most Japanese women's clothing stops at size medium which is something like a US size 4. So if you do gain weight then unfortunately you have to diet or else you can't shop in department stores. Ya, there's still Uniqlo, GU, Zara, Shein, etc which have full ranges. But, it's just not the same :(
OMG all of you are really good looking and you all have a complex from listening to other people, i just read in a UA-cam video that some of the idols have been passing out on stage, and i’m sure a lot has to do with malnourish, next time someone says too lose weight, tell them their stupid and you could diet but stupid has no fix
When I traveled Japan, I found out that the food, the japanese restaurants offered, were so small and tiny compared to others countries. Then I realized that the average height of japanese were smaller than that of Korean and Chinese.
I live in Japan and agree with Hermy here, the portions are often quite big. I'm taller and fatter than the average japanese person and yet I am quite full after eating a whole teishoku meal. Of course if you go to an izakaya and only order some side dishes the portions are smaller. I have to imagine that is what happens to foreigners that complain about the portion sizes.
Another reason they stay small is they smoke like chimneys and can be effective appetite suppressant. Also the thin weight catches up with them when they age. Osteoporosis and the extreme stooped humped back look.
Just love yourself and don't stressed out what people think about your weight or being skinny if feel good about yourself thats very good its mental health and feeling amazing about yourself it's always good
the girl at 7:15 hit home for me bc my boss in japan told me to lose weight and i’ve always been like a low BMI and probably weighed about 54kg and I’m 5 ft 7 but now I weigh 51kg since then but idk.. I thought I was healthy :( it’s so sad the pressure to lose weight there is extreme and people will comment on it 😢
It's same in my country too. If you are meeting someone after a long time and if their appearance has changed then we will directly say about it. "Looks like you have gained some weight" "Looks like you have lost your weight".
asians in general just have no chill or no filter when it comes to commenting on people's appearances. my asian friends and families often straight up just go up to me and say 'you're too skinny, you look sick. you're too fat, you should eat some salad' and that sorta stuff lol. it doesn't bother me much but it can be pretty harmful to other people who may be less comfortable with the way they look or suffer from things like body dysmorphia.

I don't wanna sound rude, but you should probably change your comment to " between the United States and south east Asia, south east Asia is healthier" ; since almost half of the country in the bottom of the list are European ones ( Italy, France, Germany) therefore in the" west" ,and Brazil is also roughly at the same longitude as the US.
I wanted to mention that there is a gender gap in the overweight/obesity rate in Japan. Of that small percentage, 3/4 of the overweight people are men. Women really have a lot of pressure to be slim.
As an Asian teen, I used to force myself into Japanese aesthetic standard by going on diet, at that time I cut almost all carbs and kept myself running on low energy level and woke up fainting and fell on the floor. then one day I realise as a 170+cm female I can never fit into the cutie mini concept and be that weak and obedient stereotypical Japanese woman. I give up fitting myself in and find a better style (Korean +western style)..
Both Eastern and Western cultures these days are too extreme about being super skinny (East) or accepting of all types regardless of health risks (West). Really needs to be a balance on what is most ideal for majority and try to work towards that. Extremes in all facets are just too much these days.
A very interesting insight into Japanese culture, and how different it can be... I hope to find cool insights like these, in my interviews from Colombia too
It's so interesting seeing these ladies rate themselves on the old 1-10 scale. When you see similar videos where people are asking American women to do the same thing, pretty much nobody gives themselves anything less than an 8, regardless of what they look like.
The girl at 3:26 kinda confused me and I had to do a double-take. She's very well aware that being 54-55kg is the standard for her height, but she's 47kg (her BMI is already borderline underweight) and she still want to be skinnier. I'm getting the sense that maybe losing weight and being skinnier than other women feels like a competition for her.
Body image is an aspect of someone's well being; specifically mental well being. But personally I don't think people (in general) should be so obsessive and critical about their own weight and image. But at the same time it's important to do what makes you happy in life. However, 1 thing a lot of people do is compare each other; especially to actors, actresses, models, etc. Most have undergone some surgeries and in magazines, they've been photoshopped. Even if most people are aware of these things it's kind of disappointing (to say the least) people still feel the way they do. Personally speaking, as long as you're (for example) within a health weight range for your height and body type, I personally wouldn't have any issues. The women interviewed here mostly seemed fine in terms of body weight relative to their height; especially comparing to the range I see in the US. Considering that Japan is generally a very conformist society, it's no surprise that people would socially criticize others that are considered 'overweight' by their social standards.
I commented this on the youtube short as well. But I don’t condone complacency, lack of discipline and unhealthy food choices that lead to obesity or being overweight. But I also don’t condone any form of body shaming. My Japanese ex girlfriend actually used to body shame me quite a bit. I work out and I think I’m pretty average for a male in his mid-late 20s, but she used to tell me that she liked me better when I had a more defined jawline. And she would constantly point out whenever she felt that I gained weight and would constantly monitor my food habits. She would say things like “You gained weight again didn’t you? What have you been eating? Are you really exercising? Your face got rounder again.” And at the time I was already doing my best to eat healthier and keep my workouts consistent so I started to feel really bad and developed more insecurities about my appearance. In the end we broke up and thankfully I have a much healthier relationship with a new girlfriend who is also Japanese but is more understanding and loving in regards to body image. I don’t think it’s purely a Japanese guy thing. As someone who’s experienced the opposite and after speaking to several female Japanese coworkers and friends, I do believe that the unrealistic beauty standards and body shaming is a Japanese problem as a whole. It’s a problem that ai believe comes from both men and women.
I am 5'2 like most of those girls and my average weight had mostly been 125 which they consider too fat. After I had my pregnancy I dropped down to 115 naturally without diet which all my friends and family thought was way too skinny for me. My legs looked like pencils. I can't imagine being that thin again. I thought I was healthy for me but I often felt lightheaded. While I am way over an ideal weight for my body right now I am working on dropping the the extra weight but I would be comfortable being anywhere between 130 and 140 because I want a toned muscle build not rail thin physique. I can't imagine being under a 100 pounds at 5'2. That's crazy.
I'm a 5'9 guy and my average weight is 124-164 pounds. I'm 140 pounds and I'm fit and healthy. I walk 40 mins everyday while wearing 10lbs of ankle weights. I can do 700 reps with jump rope while breathing only through my nose while my mouth is shut. Even when I finish my jump rope exercise I still keep my mouth shut. I don't consume sugar but I do take one tablespoon of raw honey everyday. I'm 43 years old.
@@Trancymind My partner was like 140 at 5'10 when I was like 120 and then 115 after the birth of our child. He also didn't eat much throughout the day and is also Asian so a slim guy. But for me it was not healthy to be that thin. I am also in my 40s now and I'm latina so fuller build. I just don't think an adult should be trying to be under 100 even if they have a slim build.
Something no one seems to think of is when women get to thin osteoporosis becomes a real concern by time they reach 40's. Thin framed women tend to struggle with this more.
Most of it is a result of genetics. There's a reason there's a separate Asian BMI calculation since East Asians tend to be thinner. But with Japan, they don't really have a lot of highly processed and industrialized food because the country is just small island with not a lot of land for agriculture and farming. Most of the Japanese diet is seafood, hard to get fat with fish being a staple. And Asian culture is very blunt about shaming, people won't hold back on criticizing your weight, there is some benefit to that but it can contribute to negative assessments of body image and eating disorders if the criticism is unjustified.
"They don't have much highly processed and industrialized foods" This is where you have lost. Japan imports a lot of its food from other countries and if you have watched Japan-based content videos, you know their diet is far from being healthy.
Because the culture is to be skinny I believe it can lead to things like portion size changes, which in turn can change the portion size your stomach is used to.
@@yachishairclips2250 True and they tend to have more cases of skinny fat (fat that goes in the wrong parts/organs in the body but is not outwardly noticable which make it quite scary because they could be over weight or have a fat related illness and they might not be able to tell until it is too late)..
It's funny how Westerners often say "I hate Japanese mindsets because they don't say what they think, and I'm sick of the Japanese tatemae culture", but Westerners extremely dislike it when Japanese people directly mention their body shape lol
I think Japqnese are worse than Korean. That girl at the beginning said 99 lbs or under, that's a child's weight. I watched another video with the same topic but with Koreans and most of them said 110 lbs, that is actually more normal but less than 100 is just insane. You can't even eat anything if you want to stay under 100 lbs. I know this because I used to weigh 90 lbs before and all I ate back then were like 2 string cheeses or 300 calories a day max. I had to start eating more to gain some weight because my doctors told me to but now that I'm happy with my weight of 108 lbs, I have to stick to a strict diet of 1,200 calories max just to maintain that weight. And if you've ever kept track of calories you will know that 1,200 adds up fast. Most foods now are between 450-550 calories, at least where I'm from in the United States. And those aren't even big meals, they're medium sized at best. So really I can only eat 2 times a day and a low calorie snack if I'm lucky.
It's actually kinda crazy how many people think you have to starve yourself to lose weight and only one person said to do sport. I guess japanese people are just attracted to being skinny because I myself actually don't like it. I would rather have a girl with muscles and fat than a girl being skinny without muscles.
Don't worry! I'm Japanese who hates diet. I'm chubby for Japanese who is thinking to be skinny is the best, but I'm happy everyday with my beautiful body! There are people who is thinking like me as well.
I've always had issues with food. It doesn't matter at this point. I'm 36 and about a 2 appearance wise. Sometimes, I think we're overeating because we lack something physically or psychologically. I want to eat right now because I'm stressed. It calms me down. Not that I want any other rays from our invisible sun. It's between me and my body.
I would never ever call my girlfriend fat. Unless she’d have some serious health issues and needed to lose weight, I wouldn’t say anything. It has to come from her, then I’ll be happy to help. Had I called my girlfriend fat that would be the end. Don’t do it 😵🥊🤨
Honestly, we (in the U.S.) could learn a LOT from Japan because obesity issues are arguably FAR worse than trying to lose another 5-10 pounds. Maybe a middle ground between both. We can be positive about looking good without irresponsibly telling people who are clearly very overweight that is acceptable. At least some of the girls (like when talking about Black Pink) understand potential consequences about being too skinny; I believe they're just a Bit too hard on themselves. No one, man or woman, should feel "proud" or "good" to walk around with rolls on their sides and do nothing to change it.
Being extremely underweight can lead to arthritis, osteoporosis, infertility and a lot of other issues. Which will slowly kill you. Being extremely overweight carries similar health risks though more immediate. Heart disease, increased stroke risk, diabetes... One kills you slowly but surely, the other can kill you at any time. I dont think there is one better than the other.
Ur completely wrong. Japan has more health issues then America does when it comes to weight. Anorexia is just as bad if not WORSE then obesity and if ppl actually educated themselves they'd know why.
@@mariem4057haha good joke😊 I would like to know the reason why Japanese, whose life expectancy is the longest, have more health issues than US people.
I'm 162 cm, and weight 59 kg, and I too get body shamed by my parents, saying I was fat, which is something I really hated, because it made me think that I really was. Nobody should have the right to force you or judge you to lose your weight, like that boyfriend is saying these kind of horrible purpose, lose him instead, and find someone who will accept your whole self.
Even considering Japanese people's homogenized physical traits, there are such factors as body type metabolic rates, food you eat ( within your) socio-economic limits, etc... Limiting all that to a very small number is beyond ridiculous. But idk if I see this clearly because I see various body types constantly.
Im 5'6" and now (finally) weigh 52kgs. Im constantly struggling to put on weight and mass because I hate how skinny I am. I never wear shorts or dresses and skirts that dont fall atleast 5 inches below my knees because I'm always worried about how skinny my legs are and am quite tired of wearing jeans regardless of the weather. But this video made me even more sad thinking about women who seem to feel even worse than I do.
One thing I hated living in Japan… It felt like they associated being chubby or fat to being lazy and basically no self control… Most of the boutiques only carry clothes until medium size… Japanese medium is basically an xs. I dreaded going back… I’ll probably starve myself before going back

It's important to take into concideration that weight without height is meaningless. Every height has it's own healthy weight range, it's called bmi. Also I think i've read certain Asian populations have a naturally lower weight compared to other populations. The girl who said she was 168cm who weigh 50kg is actually underweight, and her ideal weight is even lower at 48 kg.
you also have to consider muscle mass which weighs a lot, if you can only reach a certain weight by losing your muscles it's BS
BMI is a scam

Love yourself and your body!
hi c: i'm glad you are recovered! very proud of u. may i ask wat are the long-term health complications u have? its ok if u dont want to answer

As you're Asian and Asians tend on average to have smaller bone structures than other races, it's okay to be on the lower end of that height -weight scale if you so desire. However, it's absolutely not okay to be under it. You are not prettier because of it. It is not pretty to look sick. You are a woman you're suppose to have curves stop thinking actually having curves is being fat.
yes, only high fashion models are so thin. Other models usually work out a lot and look healthier
The fashion industry messed up every girls self esteem. Just eat healthy and workout that's it. Just stay healthy.
Weight do play a role to stay healthy.precisely called 'body fat percentage'. Secondly, higher weight(obsessed) do extra burden to body caused inconvenient
Common sense
Honestly, every time i hear about Japan standards is always quite shocking. Most people do seem to live for others instead of being satisfied with who they are. Of course is not something that only happens in Japan but it feels like is way more heavy in their culture.
But that girl needs to leave that toxic boyfriend asap. "Its embarrassing to stand next to you" is not only a very selfish thing to say but display zero care or love towards the other. Its scary how she treated like a common thing.
It's only "toxic" in a Western context. Not everything works the same as in the West, where women have more rights than men.
@@aeishthnydawhen you think losing weight will make u beautiful

omg i relate to you so much. i got my puberty fast in middle school so i was around your height, 5'1, in middle school, weighing around 115 pounds, but now i am 20 and currently same height, at 98 pounds, like you, again.
I am quite sure however you look that you look much better at 110.
Yes, only fat people are happy, because food is the only durable form of happiness humans can attain.
I'm a guy. If your boyfriend is telling you you're fat or too fat or that you need to lose weight you need to lose something quickly. The boyfriend.

@@JC-hp7pc real men understand that women r not objects that should cater only to men and not their physical health. These girls r literally starving.
You can't win."
So sad, but very true.

Yup.. As a gal who has been both overweight and underweight (actually around the weight that I wanted to be at at the time), you really can't win. People would tell me that I needed to lose weight or that I looked sick/tired. All I can say is, truly keep the goal of health in mind and live a life that you enjoy. (p.s. i so, SO know it's easier said than done but with time...)
What people don't seem to understand is that it's not about weight but your bodyfat percentage
Let's look at it in this perspective: look at a athlete for example they look way leaner than the average person but there is a very high chance that they weigh more than the average person purely because of their muscle development
This is because muscle is denser than fat
So surely looking thinner might be your goal but starving yourself until you become a skeleton is not the way to do it
All you need to do is regularly work out and do a proper diet that provides your body the nutrients to help your body develop faster
This way you're gonna feel a lot better and healthy than simply starve yourself
I don't think ppl from other countries can understand this, but the lady who's talking about her bf is probably proud of her relationship like "we're so close that we can say honest opinions about us each other."
(it's just how I felt and I hate that I felt this way. I grew up in JP as a woman btw 😅)
I saw some ppl commented "no worries, you're 10 out of 10." or like "the girls should be more confident." but these are missing the point.

I starved myself late childhood to mid teens and it seriously impacted my bone density too. Six years later and I'm STILL recovering
60kg is the ideal weight for 170cm for women (it would be 70 for men). I'm 159 and have 47kg, 46 if I'm crazy active. And I have very visible muscle definition.
Men like what they like, just the same as hypergamous women that like what they like.

Hmh not really true - Koreans are quite tall as well (Especially the men) and are usually taller than Japanese and Chinese.

This is just a personal opinion but between the western world and Japan (but this is true for most East Asian countries) I feel like people are healthier in the latter, plus people have to keep in mind that genetics also do play a role in this...Japanese people are usually smaller (in terms of height), develop muscles more slowly, have lower bone density, etc.
South asians are the least obese.
They also live the longest on average. So, something is *probably* working as harsh as it sounds.
I hope to find cool insights like these, in my interviews from Colombia too
Do they talk at all about how model pics are photoshopped and not realistic?
It's so interesting seeing these ladies rate themselves on the old 1-10 scale. When you see similar videos where people are asking American women to do the same thing, pretty much nobody gives themselves anything less than an 8, regardless of what they look like.
It’s interesting watching people just straight up telling the camera they have an eating disorder.
Your face got rounder again.”
And at the time I was already doing my best to eat healthier and keep my workouts consistent so I started to feel really bad and developed more insecurities about my appearance.

Stress for silly things, it's important to be healthy for mind and body.
As a person with hypothyroidism/Hashimotos i could never live long term in a country like that. It would destroy my mental health.
"They don't have much highly processed and industrialized foods"
This is where you have lost.

Good Work, AB.
Sad how the one girl knew her ideal is 55/56kg but said she wants to be literally 10kg below that
If you are considered thin in Western countries, you will be considered overweight in Japan.

Every few years Asian boss does a video like this
Honestly, we (in the U.S.) could learn a LOT from Japan because obesity issues are arguably FAR worse than trying to lose another 5-10 pounds.
Not to mention that some people have health issues that prevent them from losing weight.
Ur completely wrong. Japan has more health issues then America does when it comes to weight. Anorexia is just as bad if not WORSE then obesity and if ppl actually educated themselves they'd know why.
@@mariem4057Then why do they have the longest life expectancy as a country?
@@mariem4057haha good joke😊 I would like to know the reason why Japanese, whose life expectancy is the longest, have more health issues than US people.
太ってるから痩せなきゃとか思うけど、美味しい物は美味しいから仕方ないの気持ちになっちゃうな笑
体重も大事だけど、見た目は筋肉りで変わる!!!
All of these ladies are lovely. 🫶🏻
Are you 118 lbs or 59kg?
59kg is 130 lbs. 118 lbs is ~54kg.
Tbh neither is bad; I'm the same height as you!
@@stephsteph4503 Ah maybe I miscalculated 😂 I'm 59 kg
Your Idol is Lizzo. Why don't you move to America.

@@aeishthnyda stupid. If you think unhealthy relationships like this are fine I really pity you
Kei's hair style from being that kakkoii F4 flower boss man to crisp sharp boss man.
Even considering Japanese people's homogenized physical traits, there are such factors as body type metabolic rates, food you eat ( within your) socio-economic limits, etc...
Limiting all that to a very small number is beyond ridiculous.
But idk if I see this clearly because I see various body types constantly.
@asianboss we need more videos in Japan
If he calls u feta just call him too small to handle a proper woman xD
Im 5'6" and now (finally) weigh 52kgs. Im constantly struggling to put on weight and mass because I hate how skinny I am. I never wear shorts or dresses and skirts that dont fall atleast 5 inches below my knees because I'm always worried about how skinny my legs are and am quite tired of wearing jeans regardless of the weather.
But this video made me even more sad thinking about women who seem to feel even worse than I do.
日本の女性は結構体重を気にしたり、見た目にコンプレックスを持ってる人多い気がする。
もちろんそのような人だけではないけど。
体重に関しては標準よりも低い体重を目指してる人が多い気がする。
One thing I hated living in Japan… It felt like they associated being chubby or fat to being lazy and basically no self control…
Most of the boutiques only carry clothes until medium size… Japanese medium is basically an xs.
I dreaded going back… I’ll probably starve myself before going back
