The Watcher's scheme would never have worked on me. I barely check the mail and assume 99% of it is spam, and all my bills are paid online. He could have sent me the most horrifying, traumatizing letter imaginable, complete with like a severed finger or something, and I'd just be like "shut up Publisher's Clearing House, Pre-approved Hilton Rewards Card, and reminder from the New Jersey Board of Elections, into the trash you go."
Me as well. 🙏🇺🇲❤️
lol same. We have a PO box and check it like once a year.
Yep, that's me😂
I’m the same way! I do everything online; I don’t think I’ve actually opened my anything from my mailbox in about a year. I’d be completely oblivious to a watcher. Not that anyone would pick me to stalk, I’m the most boring person on earth. 😂😂
This seems like an excellent way to get a home at an affordable price in this crazy market!
ALWAYS FOLLOW THE MONEY !!!
I find it odd they did not try to further investigate the boyfriend who's game character was literally the watcher. The DNA evidence found on the letter was said to female and his girlfriend was literally stalking the house in her car. She was probley dropping the letters off for him.
Yep! Sounds plausible! Good one!
He was probably playing the Witcher and she just got confused 🤣
You've cracked it!
He was playing this deeply disturbing game the watcher 3!
I agree with this theory. I also think maybe the previous owners may have had something to do with it. Find it odd that they would not keep a weird letter from someone thanking them for bringing someone new to a house. My problem with this, I can't find a motive for them.
“Had schizophrenia when he was younger.” It’s not something you grow out of.
Yea I was thinking exactly that.
But it can be something you grow into, so having it when younger means long so possibly worse? I’m guessing ofc. No expert
@@someguyfromtheinternet5158 Better or worse depends partly on the disease itself, and partly on how it is treated, med compliance, etc. My schizophrenia continues to get better over time because I take my meds and see my therapist regularly. But there is some luck there, too. Meds don’t work the same for each person.
I was just surprised at the phrasing the narrator used. You just don’t stop having schizophrenia, (though you may get it under control).
Well it can gradually fade away or maybe he took regular medication to suppress it
I think he might have meant he was diagnosed when he was younger, or it was worse before
Honestly, if I started receiving letters like that I would first be amused and later frustrated. Probably would watch the mailbox and go talk to the guy leaving the mail, or, I don't know, start reading all the letters through a megaphone. Make a game of it, I doubt the "watcher" would DO anything, they're not called the doer after all.
"The Doer" xD
It wasn't delivered in person lol
I would be watching with binoculars from the dark until I find out who it is
I did the plumbing work in that house back in the early 2000s during a major renovation. The owner of the construction company was a Scotch Plains Police Officer. I got a tip at the end of the job that consisted of a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue and season tickets to the Jets which I promptly sold.
I dont know why I find that so funny but being tipped a bottle of alcohol that im pretty sure is like $200 and jets tickets is very funny to me
@@aleynahallie9506 yeah I was like "oh yay" in my head 😆 I would have rather had gotten a cash tip especially considering the house was worth a million back in the early 2000s. White collar folks from Wall Street and such all wanted to have that Westfield NJ mailing address which inflated their sense of worth amongst their peers. Imo if you put that house in just about any other town at that point in NJ history it was 400 to 500k house tops and probably even less the further you got away from NYC and Central Jersey
Why didn’t they just set up a secret/hidden cameras around the place so they can see who puts the letters in the mailbox? 🤔
Yeah, the whole story sounds fishy.

@Excentryck why wouldnt they check from which mail is the watcher sending those letters?

What I learned today is that it could save you a lot of money to find a home you want that is out of your range by a bit that is on the market and then do creepy shit with letters when someone moves in and get the house for several hundreds of thousands less in just a few years. I wonder if they ever did any investigating of the people who bought the house in the end for far less than it should have been worth.
It doesn't say did the new owners get any letters or threats

The Netflix show on this is honestly great. Give it a watch. Had no idea this video even pre-dates that.
What's weirder is that I've been through the town this house was in. Nothing would ever make you suspect that something like this was happening in that area.

A good way to lower the value of a house, then buy it for 400k less than it’s worth haha
Except that the stigma remains and must be disclosed when you sell the house again. So it really IS worth 400k less.
Once it hit the media, I'd think it would be safe to live there.

So, the Broaddus sold the house in July 2019, but what about the new owners? Did they receive any letters? It's been two years since the sale. Or, maybe the new owner desperately wanted to buy the house, but at a lower price and played this entire game?
I think I remembered that the watcher didn't send any new letters to the new owners. I can't remember the article that I read this from.

Nothing a firearm, a few cameras, and Rottweilers can't handle.
Agreed, most likely it was the bipolar neighbor adult aged child. He was put in a care facility and the house sold with no more issues.
A Ring doorbell system is a beautiful thing. Tape the door to the basement, cover all exits. Set up cameras at the exits. Also, the binoculars I know can’t zoom nearly far enough for the person to not have been close by if it was real.
I live in a high crime area, both me and my wife carry. I have a few cameras installed in the garage, driveway, side yard and backyard. If I'm not home and she's coming home late, she calls me to check the cameras while she parks so no one runs up on her.
Recently went to Mexico and saw these beautiful homes with high walls but beautifully decorated and security spikes on top but done artfully so. Might check with the city and county to see if I can have something like that installed in my home.
Interesting how stories like this never happen to security and firearm enthusiasts...A big "mystery"...😂
why rottweilers? they're mediocre guards. train german seppherds instead, they live longer since they're not that much of a genetically modified breed

A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON.
The courier chases you down wherever you are in the world to deliver your newest letter from the watcher. There’s no escape until you solve the mystery and end it with your sword while trying not to take an arrow to the knee
Did this happen to the other owners afterwards? Because if not, then it had something to do with them. Either it was them themselves or someone in the neighbourhood didn't like them.
first is possible, but latter is impossible since they never moved. most likely it was the chick's boyfriend making the chick to put the letters on his behalf
Just rig a camera to the back of the mailbox so when it opens it will take a picture, or even have a long-range camera looking at the mailbox and have it monitored 24/7, then send a nearby operative to take down the person putting in a letter.
Ive heard this story so many times, its not funny. But this is the 1st time Ive heard it so well presented & researched with different & added content that I havent heard before. It made it so much more riveting. Thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

"The million dollar house no-one wants to live in"
Ah, so the cheapest houses on the market today?
Man you made me laugh today. Here's a cookie. 🍪
Lol man, that's painful
Okay, I had a thought… The police literally looked at everyone in the neighborhood as a suspect, including the family that bought the house. But there are two people they never even thought to question or look at: the people who sold them the house. I know it makes no sense for them to terrorize the new owners, but since when do people make sense? It’s quite possible they were the ones sending the letters and it would explain why they never caught “the watcher”.
I would put a big sign up in the front yard saying "WATCH THIS!" and I would have the house demolished. Nothing for them to see anymore!
Just finished reading your book "Stick A Flag In It" and i gotta say, it was FKN BRILLIANT ! ! ! !
He wrote a book? No wonder his storytelling so good in the videos. Wow. Need to look that up :D
I’d have been tearing into the walls to see if there’s literally any skeletons in closets, or under floorboards, behind the walls. Basically take time off from work and stake out the place til I can hopefully figure out who it is.
Was done in the end, they even opened several walls.

Or you could just throw the letters out and live your life.
@@herrschmidt5477 Did they find anything or was it just empty space?
@@Razer5542 nothing was ever found. personally I think it was either a scam to get the house relatively cheap or just the one neighbour looking straight at their house was a (luckily rather harmless) nutjob.

I usually skip through the sponsored parts but I could listen to this guy all day!
Why didn' they secrete cameras in hidden locations around the exterior and/or the interior windows of the house?
small cameras
Secrete cameras? Sounds painful.
Camera glands must be acting up.
Seriously? After the first letter, I would have hired a professional security company with a very hidden camera facing the mailbox - that ran continually. Since it was handwritten, it had to have been hand delivered. Then I'd let the kids play on the porch for one hour - with a camera(s) covering all angles - along with a PI secretly in the house also watching. It may have cost some money, but if they wanted to flip the house, it would been easy after they caught 'the woman'. The theory that they were in over their head is plausible; if they can't afford the mortgage and taxes while living with the parents how would they afford it once they moved in - with utilities, etc to boot. Seems odd. I know the area - really seems odd.
its the same scam the Lutzes did with Amityville.
Cant afford the house, make up some bullcrap, and get out of the house

It could be a plot done by the watcher to lower the value of the house. When it is low enough, the watcher would buy it.

I'm curious to know how thorough the investigation of the Langfords was. Just because the DNA didn't match Abby, doesn't mean it wasn't her mother, or that they weren't working together somehow. They are really the only ones in this story with the time, opportunities and patience for this kind of plot.
I wonder if the local cops bothered to do familial DNA. I get the feeling they didn't take it very seriously, so I doubt it.
If it doesn't match to descendant it is nearly guaranteed to not match with parent as well. Because as you should probably know children share DNA with parents. In fact lots of murderers were found without ever taking their DNA but through the DNA of their genealogy. Most famous example is how golden state killer was found, they have never took his DNA as a suspect before they found him. So checking mother DNA would actually make near no sense if they checked daughter.
