You have nothing to feel guilty about. If they are people who are important to you, then they will understand once you explain you have social anxiety and how that can look like. I do get "D A"'s point though in the sense that, if future generations are raised ENTIRELY free from gender roles, there would be no more (social) gender, only biological gender.
      The reason I identify more as female than as male is because of some characteristics that bother me in men and that I have experienced with several men (whether boyfriend or friend) but never with women (and I can hardly imagine that any woman would ever behave in this way - ofc there are always exceptions). But it is not a very strong identification. I don't really care about my gender: I'm a woman and it doesn't bother me, that's it.

When people are exposed to things that at first they have no understanding of or make them uncomfortable, they begin to learn that there is nothing to fear. It can be truly terrifying to dismantle social constructs that have developed over thousands of years. But this is why we're such a fascinating species because we are self-aware about how our actions contribute to social evolution! FYI, I advocate for declaring pronouns if you feel safe enough to do so. Discovering one's pronouns isn't a binary issue and can be a spectrum of introspection.

    • @kateharper2442
      @kateharper2442 2 роки тому +11

      The whole "se people just aren't ready" doesn't sit well with me. I respect anyones choice to assign their own pronouns, but just because I don't want to, doesn't mean I'm "not ready". It forces me to choose something when I don't identify myself like that or by pronouns. So ooof course I'd never be annoyed at someone no matter what pronouns they used for me, but just because I don't see gender or my pronouns as a part of myself I want to define, doesn't mean I'm somewhere on a journey with it and need to work it out. I am fine as just being me. I'm not still working it out or uncomfortable and it's condescending to imply so.

    My thoughts on labels: Label yourself if it is helpful to you. If it’s not helpful to you, don’t bother. Don’t feel pressure from society to label yourself. I adopt some labels, such as trans and queer, but I don’t get very specific because that’s not important to me. If it is for someone else, great. If not, totally okay. Labels are to help you, not help others explain you or put you into a box. Do whatever you want.

      I'm cis and I don't like the trend where everybody 'needs' to specify their pronouns, I feel that, ironically, this is so stigmatizing and putting people in boxes. I have an obviously female name, so it's obvious I identify as female (assuming I'm not ''in the closet'', if we can use that expression for gender identity). I mean, if I identified as male, I would change my name to an unambiguously male one, and if I was agender/genderfluid, I'd deliberately pick an 'ambiguous' name AND I would specify my "they/them" pronouns. Also for other people with ambiguous names (whether they are cis or trans or other), it makes sense to specify pronouns. But otherwise I just wouldn't do it, because I feel like I would be saying to everybody "Hey, my name is X AND BY THE WAY I AM FEMALE EVERBODYYYYYYY! Not that I want this to matter right now but anyway, just thought I'd mention" 😂
      (Similar to stating every time to everybody that you're straight, that you adhere to a certain religion, to a certain political party, etc. etc.)

    • @Birdkiller46
      @Birdkiller46 2 роки тому +24

      @@soybean3423 Some people may have names you consider feminine but not use she/her pronouns. Also, if only people with ambiguous names said their pronouns then it would make them feel other and affect many non-binary people who do choose to have gender-neutral names. Not all non-binary people pick gender-neutral names. Not all trans women pick feminine names. Not all trans men would pick obviously male names. I didn’t! Whether you’re cis or trans, you cannot tell someone’s pronouns by looking at them or by their name. There’s nothing wrong with having a stereotypically gendered name as a non-binary person. If they’re okay with it, they’re okay with it. Same for trans men or women. Normalizing it helps stop stereotyping, othering of trans* people, and make sure people are respected. We refer to people with names and introduce ourselves that why, so why not pronouns? It’s quick and easy. I don’t really see how pronouns are stigmatizing. I also don’t see that’s it’s weird to introduce them. You introduce yourself with your name so people can refer to you. Same with pronouns. Saying your religion or political party, like you said as examples, in every introduction doesn’t matter because people aren’t going to be referring to you as that.

      @@Birdkiller46 Exactly! I am a cis woman with a very feminine name, but I still put pronouns in my bio, we need to normalize pronouns in order to help trans and non-binary individuals. It’s such a small thing on the part of one person, but when many people do it, it adds up to help a whole community of people. Most of my friends are LGBTQ+, I am ace demipanromantic myself, and many of my friends are trans and/or non-binary so if I can help them by doing this insanely small thing, then I think I should.

    I feel like 'demanding' people to put pronouns on name tags as a given rule would be quite dangerous to trans people or gender-nonconforming people who are not out yet or not out in all of their life. Imagine getting a new job in a very prejudiced part of the world, for example, choosing to not come out as a way of protecting yourself, and then being faced to choose your pronouns for their nametag? Imagine kids who haven't come out to their parents yet but maybe their classmates getting their real pronouns 'leaked' in school documents? I don't know.

    • @evhill4716
      @evhill4716 2 роки тому +9

      I think everyone really misunderstood Jonathans point, I felt they meant if we all knew about current open pronouns from birth, then when I was growing up I can understand and get to know what mine are, I wouldn't be fearful of some new label because it would be normal. It's like way back when we all picked out first email addresses or usernames terrified of who might see them or what they might say about us when in reality they are as changeable as our minds, as the weather, as our moods, they are almost time stamps of what felt important to me at that time, who I felt I was, I don't really see any difference! I felt what was said was to suggest that perhaps pronouns, given time, could be as normal as anything else, who said anything was set in stone!

I know that gender is something that has helped a lot of people find their own identities, but I wish that there wasn’t such a confined gender sphere to fit into the mold of. When it comes to pronouns, I don't think tags are always the best/safest option for many people. If trans and non-binary folks, for example, have to display their pronouns, they might be risking their safety or if they choose to remain safe, experience dysphoria

    • @allenp9173
      @allenp9173 2 роки тому +17

      very true and I also think that it is not necessary to have everyone displaying their pronouns since around 99.8% of the population lives within the binary of either he/him and she/her so most of the time you can safely assume someone's pronouns just by looking at them, because there's a 99.8% chance you're right. In the 0.2% of cases when you're wrong they can let you know that they go by they/them.

      @@allenp9173 That's very true, and in fact many trans people actually prefer to have people guess their pronouns by how they look, since that's the whole point of trying to pass, is to not have to have your identity come into question every time you pass someone on the street. (The whole "don't assume my gender" thing is made up). Of course there are also trans people who feel very differently about it, but the important thing is that IF someone shares their pronouns or corrects people on them, they should always be respected.

    As a trans person I really like what they were saying about pronouns!! I’m from the south and there are kinda a lot of layers as to why it can be scary. I don’t think it’s fair to force trans people into essentially outing themselves when they’re not ready and it can also be very dangerous… just because something becomes “socially acceptable” in media doesn’t mean that there aren’t places where it’s still very different. I definitely think letting people know your pronouns is important and it needs to be normalized but that energy really needs to be directed at cis people. If it was standard practice with EVERYONE, not just trans people, then hell yeah! But we’re not there yet :/ I definitely get what Jonathan’s saying but, in my experience living in a little town in East Tennessee, misgendering only gets worse when I wear my pronoun pin. It takes away any chance I had at passing as cis and just gets more anger directed towards me in public so … I know it may be different in, you know, New York or LA, but people should keep in mind that the majority of us don’t have the luxury of being able to be ourselves without fear yet. And there are people who have to be closeted that would have to misgender themselves and ,,, yeah it’s a whoooole multi layered issue but I really appreciated tan and antoni and Bobby’s thoughts about it because I think it’s so often portrayed as a black and white issue when it’s not. Also antoni I’m free this weekend just so you know

      I'm from India, and here things like sexuality and gender are just not known. I doubt people even in the "modern cities" know about the LGBTQ+ community. So of course having my pronouns on a "label" is scary to me. Even just having she/her as a label would make people raise eyebrows at me and ask me why I feel the need to reiterate that. I can't even imagine including they/them as of yet. We are millions of years away from acceptance here and a lot of times, I see westerners not being able to grasp just how difficult lives are for us out here.

    This show heals my heart. When I am having a hard time, I start watching them work their magic. I think a lot about what JVN said about how do we really always have to be the bigger person and he said you know what I think we do. I think about that a lot when I am in difficult situations where I don’t want to alienate myself from the person but still have convictions where the basis is human rights and bodily autonomy.

    Queer Eye is my comfort show, my safe space. Every time i feel the world is falling apart and my faith in humanity is getting lost, these 5 amazing people just make me think that maybe there is still hope. They make me so happy, i love them so much

    I love QE’s conversations and the safe space they create. I also love that they advocate that growth is a life long process that can only start when the person is ready.
