Absolute Perfection!! How Harry Reynolds Ran the Perfect 400m Race in Athletics.

- At the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico City Lee Evans put on quite a show, battling with Larry Freeman on the straight he managed to get to the line ahead of his fellow countryman to win the 400m olympic title. Even more impressive was the fact he was able to crack the previous 400m world record of 44.1 seconds with his time of 43.86 seconds, being the first man to break the 44 second barrier, followed by Larry James who finished that same race in 43.97 seconds. That record stood invincible for many years, with many high caliber 400m athletes failing to get to the mark. It was not until 19 years later, that Butch Reynolds would change history forever.
Great Video!
Probably the most underrated world record. Dude broke it by 0.56 seconds.
This might be the greatest 400m ever run. The *latest* Mondo track in Tokyo combined with the vaporfly spikes seems to improve times by around 1%. And that's just in comparison with times run this year without that track/those particular spikes.
If you transport 1988 Reynolds to Tokyo today and give him the trampoline spikes, I'm convinced he runs under 42.86 (-1%). Technology has been disguising the greatness of past runners.
@J 0 I hear you, but the 1% value lines up pretty well with the athlete's seasons bests across all the sprints.
Just try it; divide some the times from this Olympics by 0.99 and tell me what you think.
Maybe the 400 just wasn't very fast. Gardiner had that weird injury earlier in the season, and Norman just seemed completely off form.
This track at the Tokyo Olympics is a completely new design (called the mondotrack WS) so it shouldn't be compared to previous Olympics. And besides, Reynolds didn't run 43.29 at the Olympics.

@J 0 yes and some people ran huge pbs. without large wind assistance.
Marcel Jacobs went from 9.99 +0.3 (best pre-Tokyo performance) to 9.80 (+0.1). 9.89 seems a lot more believable to me and it's still a strong pb.
Elaine Thompson knocked off 0.1 from her 100m pb, equalled her 200m pb while cruising in the semis, and reached the highest top speed ever achieved by a female sprinter. all on the same track. 10.71 and 21.74 seem more plausible
The 400m hurdlers completely obliterated Kevin Young's mark. Warholm even sent his own 46.70 to the shadow realm. I get that he was only just starting his season when he went 46.7 but to attribute *45.94* just to Olympic tapering and good competition seems a little off. He's almost a second faster than a strong record that lasted for almost 30 years. Not only that but there were 2 other athletes that eclipsed Kevin Young's historic mark. Even the athletes themselves admitted how bouncy the track feels. 46.40 for Warholm seems more plausible (it's still a huge wr)
The 1% conversion might not be totally accurate (it will probably vary from athlete to athlete) but it's gonna take more than Olympic magic to convince me that the track wasn't a huge part of the crazy times we saw. And we'll get a chance to see more comparisons when the athletes start their late season diamond League meets. I'll eat my hat if any of the times are close.
I always felt the doping charge against him was bogus and it stole his career. He was by no means peaked and had more to show the world
Shows how some body type benefit from slow acceleration in contrast to fast acceleration like everyone is taught
These times are off. He ran this famously with negative splits. First 200 was 21.9 not 21.4 as your first two 100 times state. His second 200 was in 21.4. This is widely documented. It's a great story but yet another screw up by someone who knows nothing about track making some misleading content on the internet. This person is not an authority on track. A quick Google search will let you know that this is a well-known story.
Third fastest time ever RUN....not.... third fastest time ever ran
Can you do a breakdown of karsten warholm’s world record
I could try
😂 he could never
He ran a good 400
Nice informative video
Could you try Irena Szewinska Montreal 400 WR?
Performance more to do with lactate handling.
happy times... no doping control... WR after WR...
