      That's why starfighters were unpopular in ST.

      I know right? You're facing a ship that can run circles around you, has weaker shields then you, is antiquated technology and you fire only once while turning your back on them and putting your strongest phaser banks out of firing arc? I thought Riker was supposed to be smarter then that. A unrelenting volley of phaser fire and torpedoes would have likely saved the D from it's unwarranted destruction.

    • @trazyntheinfinite9895
      @trazyntheinfinite9895 3 роки тому +1

      Torpedoes are guided weapons, the idea that you have to align to use em is ridiculous.
      That only comes into play at warp speeds since the sustainer on a torp wont allow for fancy maneuvers.

    • @Anonymous551656
      @Anonymous551656 3 роки тому +2

      @@trazyntheinfinite9895 Yes, torpedoes are guided. Regardless, firing them directly towards your target is obviously far more efficient than if the torpedo has to burn time countering its existing momentum, re-orientating, and then gaining momentum in the direction of the target.
      Torpedoes are also not super-maneuverable, hence why starships fire a spread to minimise the chance of the enemy ship dodging. Firing them directly at the target seems like it would do a lot to limit the ability of the target to dodge.
      Anyway the point here is not how likely torpedoes fired at an angle might have hit the target, the point is that the Enterprise didn't unload a full spread of torpedoes on the Bird of Prey immediately.
      The fact that they started turning away isn't to say they couldn't still have fired the main torpedo launcher at that point - obviously they could have - it simply emphasises the fact that they have a perfect opportunity to fire but simply aren't doing it.

    If this wasn't fiction, the Enterprise's performance in her final battle would almost be criminal. When the Klingon ship opened fire and was heavily damaging the Enterprise, they should have been hit with continuous phaser fire and a stream of photon torpedoes that would have overwhelmed their shields and made short work of the vessel. Instead,they get hit with a couple of short phaser blasts and Worf stops firing. We have seen what the Enterprise was supposedly capable of, but they almost never used their full firepower. Very frustrating. That is something that eventually ruined the series for me.

    • @mveytia
      @mveytia 3 роки тому +1

      You could argue that the Enterprise couldn't return fire much because of the evasive maneuvers they were taking since the Klingons could fire through their shields.
      But this was in the movie, so I wouldn't hold it against the show too much. Plus pre-Dominon War, the Galaxy class did kinda seem like glass cannons. They could dish it out, but not take. How many times did we see a couple shots knock out their engines or main power?
      Hell just the Bozeman clipping the Enterprise's nacelle kept destroying the damn thing.

      @@Idazmi7 True, but the worst that should have happened was the warp reactor tripping offline, certainly not a warp core explosion. Just valve off the antimatter coming from heavily protected fuel cells and the reaction dies. Then the ship switches to getting power from the impulse engines, fusion reactors, or batteries automatically.

    • @Idazmi7

      @@MK0272
      We're talking about a million ton object slamming into the unprotected space warp propulsion nacelle at impulse speeds. A more direct collision would literally tear the whole nacelle clean off.
      Also, the Enterprise-D is a _Galaxy Class_ ship, not one of the older, more militant designs from the original Star Trek era, like the Constitution, Enterprise, or Avenger class ships. Those older ships were designed in detachable segments that could exist independently, so if you blew up a nacelle, it wouldn't necessarily affect the reactor. The Galaxy class wasn't designed with that in mind, and is known for it's warp core issues.
      They still should have vaporized that Bird-of-Prey as if they were swatting a fly.

      Maybe they could, but its primary purpose was to take every shot aimed at the Enterprise C. When one of the cruisers broke off to pursue the Enterprise C, the D had to break off from the others it was fighting and take their unhindered attacks continually while it attacked the pursuing cruiser.
      Also, ambushes are a thing, a less powerful adversary can take out a more powerful one if they get first strike (which the Klingons usually do with their shields).

      That's what the vfx team complained about, that the D would vapourise Birds of Prey without breaking a sweat, but they didn't have the budget to build a new class of Klingon battlecruiser that could more convincingly take on a Galaxy (and they felt the Star Trek I/VI battlecruiser was too old to convincingly play a role, although they changed their minds about that in DS9). They rationalised it that the Klingon warships in the episode are identical in design to the Bird of Prey but are much bigger than normal, which you can see later on when they fly over the D.
      I think it was them arguing over that which led to the introduction of the Vor'cha class attack cruiser in Season 4.

      Crap hardly covers it. A 20 year old outdated and retired BoP actually taking down a Cutting Edge Capital Ship by simply ignoring it's firepower with shields that somehow laugh at it saying: "Ha Ha, it didn't hurt me!" is the height of writer laziness. No wonder the Trek movies ran out of steam only three sequels later... to the point even Patrick Stewart and the other principles refused to do anymore movies. Saying they simply weren't inspiring enough anymore. It was time to clean house, but I guess the old production crew was too entrenched by then. Now we have a "new" Trek that's even worse, to the point I wonder what CBS is going to do. Seems no one is capable in today's generation of honoring what the original was about anymore. Well I probably could, picking up where they left off in Nemesis, but I'm not even sure if fans would like where I would take it. Especially factoring in Insurrection and Picard's quip about the state of the Federation. But in light of today's situation with our own American system... I would think at least it would resonate....
      As a writer myself, I have a rule in creating a story that absolutely must be followed. People can agree or disagree as it's my rule and based off my observations over history. When beginning any story... especially a story told in "Chapters" (or in screenplay parlance "Episodes/Sequels") you absolutely HAVE to know the destination of where you are going before you start. Meaning, have the ending already in sight.... at least a rough outline if not the actual finished product. Then, fill in the journey as you go... building scene upon scene, act upon act, episode/sequel upon episode/sequel towards that destination. Resist the urge to simply wing a episode or scene without any idea of it's relevance to the whole.
      Subplots can be useful if done correctly in creating "along the way" experiences that, while not overall important towards getting to the destination, they can provide respite in the sense of releasing the viewer to "enjoy the trip" more. Doing a little cinematic "sightseeing" via experiences that build memories, allow for more intimate character development, and so on. That's how I like to write... but then I'm rather old fashioned. I grew up in a household that had many American classics on (70's kid, when ToS Trek was in syndication) This kind of writing was really last seen in Deep Space Nine and Voyager, not so much in Enterprise, but it was there. Hence why I feel Enterprise didn't reach the level of the shows before it... but still lightyears ahead of Discovery and Picard.
      Just my .02

    • @meiray
      @meiray 3 роки тому

      @@joncouncil4454 I'm not actually sure any of the principles "refused" to do further Trek movies, they simply weren't deemed financially viable after Nemesis flopped. Stewart took a pay cut for Nemesis and even Brent Spiner wrote in an out for Data to be able to return, just in case.
      But I certainly agree with you about writing principles. You can be loose and flexible and even change an ending midway through if inspiration strikes, but it's far better to know your ending if you are going down a serialized path. The latest Trek series have been beset by numerous BTS problems from losing showrunners to rushing production, but they certainly haven't been working with a proper roadmap to where each season would end.

    1000 meters from the planet surface is only 1 kilometer from planetary surface... that SFX shot looks like it was more suitable for 1000 km (or basically, 'Thermopause' - which extends 500 - 1000 km from Earth's surface for example).
    SFX department would do well to make their effects look more in line with actual distances.
    For example, phasers have a range of at least 150 000 km (on a Nebula class)... and Photon Torpedoes at least 300 000 km (again, Nebula class)... whereas since later seasons of TNG imply ranges of 300 000 km for phasers, and millions of km for photon torpeodes.
    Would be great to see Trek space battles fought over such large distances (aka in line with technological abilities of Trek) to show just how powerful these things are (Teraton range firepower at maximum in late 24th century).

    19:42 - A very hammy extra does the fist pump two seconds before Data. Kudos to TNG writers Ron Moore and Brannon Braga for pointing him out during the movie's DVD commentary.

    Interesting. Galaxy class has the most numerous phaser banks among fed's top of the line battleship (second only after enterprise E) ,but she mostly only using her main saucer's.

      Could be that the phasers are of varying class, and the large array around the saucer are the ship's "main battery", if there is such a thing in Trek

      @@Paveway-chan good question, i had been wondering for the same question since long time ago. But according to actd galaxy have 11 arrays, memory alpha /ditl 12 arrays and they registered as type x phasers (in fact galaxy have 18 arrays w/ four for each of saucer's main arrays). So it safe to say that the smaller ones also rated as type X. The difference probably on how long they could fire burst before recharging it. In Nemesis, ent-e firing all of her available arrays. The first movie featuring all available phaser banks fire.
      Edit : interesting opinion, yeah, agree, the main array = main battery. The smaller ones = secondary battery, they probably also recharging slower than the main one. But the output, very likely to be the same as the main array's.

      Yeah, could be larger/more resilient power lines rather than the phasers themselves. But those saucer section phaser banks are also the ones with best coverage around the ship, it might simply be more convenient to fire those

      The Excelsior class is also armed with a very large number of phaser banks if you take into account that it can fire two simultaneous shots because of each bank firing from twin/dual-emiters. The Uss Lakota (as seen in DS9) is said to have been armed with 30 phaser emitters spread across 15 banks, hence why it was able to fire well over a dozen shots on the Uss Defiant in the span of just a few seconds. From what we've seen on screen, Sovereigns, Galaxies and Excelsiors seem to be very "phaser heavy". The Intrepid (as seen in Voyager) also seems to have a very solid amount of phaser strips.

    Very slick, love it! You missed a couple though. The torpedo destroying the shuttle at the end of 'Skin of Evil', the torpedoes into the sun in 'Half a Life', the torpedo to light up the nebula in 'In Theory' and the practice phaser burst in 'Conundrum'.

      Nah the torpedoes can be set to new years celebration mode.
      The really funny is that riker had them detonate in orbit, not 1 kilometer above the surface.
