I’ll never get over how TK and especially Kari were shafted from the spotlight. It made perfect sense narratively, and it would be dope to see the 2 younger siblings of the original 2 leads step up and show how much they’ve grown up

Warning: somewhat long reply coming up
They're very sidelined compared to the new trio, and with the exception of when they fought Tyrannomon (EP03) and the Meramon (EP09), respectively, they didn't have many impressive victories. Most of their function is also just to create a love triangle with Davis. Here is also them individually:
      - TK really only has one moment of glory, and that's when he confronts Ken/Digimon Emperor, and the entire Patamon-line is so underutilized because the writers are afraid that they will become OP, so they constantly find excuses to not let Patamon digivolve to Angemon or MagnaAngemon. Pegasusmon is mostly used for flight rather than battle. Shakkoumon was introduced incredibly late and has only ONE victory (MarineDevimon).
      - Kari has ONE episode dedicated to her (EP13), and is otherwise just there or is a damsel in distress. Angewomon is virtually never seen and has only ONE victory (against a random Airdramon in episode 13), and Nefertimon, like Pegasusmon, is mostly used for flight. Silphymon is slightly more used than Shakkoumon, but still not as much as Paildramon and Imperialdramon.
Compare this to the new trio who had several episodes dedicated to their respective armor digivolutions, one episode each dedicated to their champion forms, and all have somewhat of an inner conflict. And as soon as Paildramon and later Imperialdramon are introduced, only Davis and Ken have some real presence and development in the story

I remember being veeeery satisfied with the concept of the second season as an Digimon obsessed child 💕
They kept what I liked and evolved the plot in an logical way. It feels more real for a kid that the digital world is like a "game" you can play after school than being trapped in it and is a logical consequence that Ken doesn't take it serious and becomes the emperor. I loved to see how the kids from the first season became teenagers and the "around the world" - part.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: 02's biggest problem by far was just how much potential it wasted. It could have been a fantastic Digimon series, possibly even as good as Tamers, if they had bothered to fully capitalize on some of the ideas that they had presented.
There were a lot of really interesting things about 02 that made it stand out, including:
Having Ken as a villain who's not only human but is also another kid in school, who could thus easily infiltrate the heroes' mundane, real-world lives.
Having Oikawa as another human villain whose entire motive centers around fulfilling a dream he shared with Cody's deceased father, and who consequentially has to choose between fulfilling his ambition and putting his best friend's son in danger.
Having both human villains being much more sympathetic than any of the main villains in Adventure.
Introducing the concept of a global Digi-destined, establishing literally an entire world of possible adventures.
BlackWarGreymon, another sympathetic villain whose very existence questions if Digimon born from evil must remain evil.
Damn near everything about the Dark Ocean in episode 13.
The brief hint that beneath Kari's selflessness and compassion lie some pretty deep insecurities.
The slightly less brief hint that T.K.'s righteous anger could lead him to some very dark places if taken too far.
All of these things are ideas which, if they were more properly developed, could have led Adventure 02 to become a compelling series that not only subvert the tone and expectations of the original Digimon Adventure, but also deconstruct some of the fundamental premises of the series.
But instead we got a series that lost momentum after the Digimon Emperor arc and rapidly descended into an aimless clusterfuck. By the last two episodes

(was hoping the dark ocean "mini" arc would be her arc since she didn't really have it in Adventure as well-- her arc in Adventure was coupled with another Taichi arc.)
Also literally most adventure staffs shipped Taichi and Hikari, and Hosoda interview on eps 21 was hilarious when telling Hikari saw Koromon as Taichi's mistress and wanted to make a peace with it so her older brother wouldn't leave her alone.

Pretty deep insecurities? Did the dub skip past that or do I just not remember that. I’ll get to the subbed version after I finish Adventure and I’m only on I think Izzy’s Ultimate/Perfect evolution?
That episode pisses me off because the message to Tai is completely different regardless of the language considering in the “Tai and home” episode, KOUSHIRO CONTACTS TAICHI with a headset on and he’s right in front of the webcam or whatever, and in the episode in question he’s just floating there and TAI CALLS IZZY.

Kens redemption arc (without the stupid magic part at the end) was the best redemption arc I ever saw. Because he went home after everything and really had to understand what he did, then he went to the digiworld to meet his digimon while other digimons attacked him. He tried to help and was accpeted into the group but not everyone was forgiving. He had to talk with his parents, with his new friends and then there was the amazing scene were he saw himself getting tortured by digimons. It took time and a lot of work. Compare this for example to Loki who never had a redemption arc and just turned somehow more or less good without someone really adressing his crimes.

The whole thing with the dark spores is actually meant to be a tie in that directly connects the story of 02 with the digimon wonderswan games, with the dying Machinedramon from adventure jogressing through time and space with the dying Kimeramon from 02, creating Millenniumon which ends up being the origin of the dark spores (we actually see this happen in 02 in a brief flashback). This whole plot point underlines most of the anime, as it is hinted that Millenniumon was also the cause of Apocalymon from adventure, and thus he essentially bootstrap paradoxed himself into existence. Also by becoming Ryo's partner the games also connect Tamers into the mix, resulting in a weird timey-whimey crazy complicated but interesting mess of a story.

Basically the spores required a certain darkness to be present in order for it to grow. And by the time it blooms it is too late because it was noticed in time. This is not so much magic as it is real life. We always have seeds of evil being planted into us but it is the way that we deal with life which decides if that evil grows or not.

0:47 This episode you show a clip of here changed EVERYTHING about the show. Before, it was a pretty run-of-the-mill "villain of the week" series. But that episode was so different and surreal, it put real stakes behind the characters' actions. It actually caused me to freak out when I first watched it, with how out of left field it was.
Side note: I only watched this series 2 years ago, when I was over 21, so there's no 'nostalgia goggles' here. The Japanese dub really helped, and had better quality all around.

I would have honestly loved if Daemon was the final villain, probably with a plotline related to the Dark Ocean. Maybe some of Devimon's data survived the fight with Angemon and instead of being reborn as a Digi-Egg, it found its way to the Dark Ocean, using the dimension's energy to grow stronger. It would have also explained why Kari got dragged into that dimension, as an attempt by Devimon/Daemon to get rid of one of the original Digidestined.

I always interpreted the Dark Spores thing with Ken as simply amplifying his emotions to an extreme level that made him irrational and, for lack of a better word, evil, rather than it simply being the spores on their own, and as for Myotismon being the villain, I do have problems with it, but I can kinda understand it beyond a cash-grab, Myotismon did come back from the dead once as VenomMyotismon, I don't see why he couldn't do it again as MaloMyotismon, but I do feel like there should have been hints, either subtle or not-so subtle, that he was the final villain, as for the argument for Daemon being the final villain, I can kinda see it, but when Devimon is scanned, his body disintegrates, meaning he had to start over as a Digi-Egg and go all the way back up, and I don't see Devimon being able to go from his baby form to his Mega level form in the time between the reveal of Daemon and his death prior to Kimeramon's creation, perhaps back to Devimon maybe, but not to a higher level, and as for the Dark Ocean plot line, I am upset by it, as prior to playing Digimon World Dawn for the DS, I never knew who that digimon was, and it never showed up, despite how amazing of an antagonist Dracomon/Dragomon could've been if they'd done things right, for example, make him a digimon that was wrongfully sent to the Dark Ocean as a punishment, and went insane in the Dark Ocean, driving him to evil, or making him a once kind Digimon who fell into the Dark Ocean and was corrupted by it's inherent evil (because it's canonically the source of all Evil in the Digital World)

The only thing they have is "mon" at the end of their title but aside from that, both shows were vastly different from one another. Digimon had an actual plot that went somewhere with character growth and it actually ended the story for the main characters unlike Pokemon that just kept going with no actual development and even after all these years, Ash is still 10 years old lol
Pokemon had the better games (as far as accessibility goes) but Digimon, at least the first 2, maybe 3 seasons had the better plot.

The whole original digimon losing there ultimates didnt go away permanently because Azulongmon gave Gennei a light Orb that gave back the Original Digimon there Ultimates and Mega forms back including WarGraymon and Metal Garurumon, which they would use in Digimon Adventure Tri. I just really like the connection between the first 2 seasons, unlike the other seasons after it, they just goes off on there own thing. I think that 02 just started badly and with it, Daisuke's (Davis') start. It felt really forced that Taichi (Tai) made that decision on his own like that. Hikari (Kari) and Takeru (TK) were both experienced with the Digital World, familiar with its battles and map, while Daisuke went there once. He had zero experience dealing with anything at that point. The way Taichi's leadership role works, is because he never appointed himself as one. During the first episodes, there was clear conflict about who calls the shots and the rivalry between Yamato (Matt) and him, the most vocal about it, made for a really interesting group dynamic.
Things would have been less forced down our throats if Hikari and Takeru led the group together for a while, but came to the conclusion through experience that they aren't cut out for it, but Daisuke is (Daisuke's great decision making input, or his courage to stride forward, pick something). That Daisuke's leadership reminds them a little of Taichi and while not completely the same, how they need someone like him to step forward in the group.
Would have appreciated him a whole lot more if he wasn't so damn incompetent the first half of the season. If no one takes his leadership seriously, what was the point in him leading in the first place.

Adventure 02 in retrospect is a very flawed season, I loved the idea of the story continuing with new digi destined taking the reigns with old cast acting as mentors and TK and Kari continuing on, the threat of a Human villain was different and interesting and I liked the idea of both worlds being at risk at the same time rather just one at time in the first season. Aside from Ken being the best addition and some good episodes here and there the season was clearly mishandled by the directors and it felt like a jumbled mess in the end, I still like it but not as much as the first season. Should really talk about Tamers next.

Episode 23 was unexpected and it being in a series that is kinda to me a simple watch to get over, it was seriously mind blowing. It was the episode where Ken was recalling his past. The narrative, his brother, his inferiority complex, his parents, the bubbles everything just worked and I felt it was extremely powerful.

Frontier had a great concept and some of the best designs. When it comes to characters, I feel like Takuya, Koji and Koichi (were these names changed in the english version?) were the only ones getting any real attention, which isn't good when you are at an all time low for main characters. The other series divided screentime more equally.
I felt the story moved kind of slow, but wasn't bad until the Royal Knights showed up to kill any momentum left. The plot makes absolutely no progress in those 10 episodes: they are somewhere, the Royal Knights show up, they fight the Royal Knights and lose, a part of the world gets deleted, rinse and repeat.
I hate to see this much potential wasted; the series could've been really great, maybe even as great as I remembered it from my childhood. Tamers on the other hand reached my high expectations, and Savers even exceeded my (much lower) expectations for it.
So yeah, Frontier isn't that bad, but it isn't one of the good seasons.

i LOVE Digimon 02, but I do admit it was a mess, from what I have read back in Japan there was a real creative battle going on as multiply directors worked on the season and all of them had their own idea what they wanted to do, in fact one director who later directs Tamers, and is known for Serial Experiment Lain had many ideas about the dark ocean in mind. But I still love it for what it is, but like 01 the series is stale at first but gets better in the second half

Yeah, 02's only real strong points were Oikawa and especially Ken. All the villains, really. The Dark Ocean and Daemon had so much potential and the episodes focusing on them were so strong. At least we got Tamers right afterwards (and Tamers' writer was the one who made the Dark Ocean and Daemon, so thank him for giving 02 amazing material that it completly wasted), but 02 is so awful it's hard to reccommend to anyone beyond the Digimon Emperor arc.

    • @HeavyMetalBeliever

I remember watching 02 when I was a kid and thinking that a lot of stuff after the Digimon Emperor arc made no sense.

    • @crimsonspirit3036
      @crimsonspirit3036 6 років тому +7

Because it sorta didn't. Until Oikawa came into the scene, every new plot point introduced after the Digimon Emperor arc, outside of Ken's redemption, seemed like the writers were just buying time until they found out what they wanted to do next. It was pretty much all filler, which is really obvious when you realise that the villains either had no concrete goals, like BlackWarGreymon, who was a pathethic attempt at trying to be deep, wild Digimon like in the wretched world tour episodes, or Arukenimon, whose goal completly contradicts what we learn about her later (why the fuck are you destroying the Digital World when Oikawa made you so you could help him enter it?) and has no motivation beyond "I'm evil".

    • @HeavyMetalBeliever
      @HeavyMetalBeliever 6 років тому +1

The only villain in 02 who had any semblance of a definable goal was MaloMyotismon, arguably. Oikawa was just "Possessed" like Ken was. The "World Tour" episodes were horrifically bad, and I think that BlackWarGreymon was an attempt at having a "complex" villain but it didn't take. Hell, Yamaki and Beelzemon in Tamers respectively are better versions of BlackWarGreymon. Adventure 02 could have never happened and nobody would have noticed.

    • @crimsonspirit3036
      @crimsonspirit3036 6 років тому +6

No, Oikawa had a goal: to reach the Digital World. Myotismon's influence took away any semblance of morality he had in order to complete that objective, but Oikawa had been trying to get there his entire life, so it can't be said that his goal was ill-defined or that he had none at all.
But yes, 02 was an unecessary mistake and Tri essentially acting like it never happened, except for evil Genai using a Digimon Emperor disguise because Ken is amazing, shows that wonderfully.

    • @HeavyMetalBeliever
      @HeavyMetalBeliever 6 років тому +4

My problem with Oikawa is that he didn't have any agency/free will/whatever after coming in contact with Malomyotismon, even if he had a set objective/goal. Yamaki and Kurata were both better in their respective seasons, but for different reasons. (Yamaki was doing the right thing but not necessarily using the right methods and Kurata was a fucking sociopath.)
Ken was the best character in 02, but even he had to play second fiddle for the vastly undeserving Davis.

One: Yeah, the algorithm is wonky.
Two: Digimon 02 is a fantastic series people hate on because they can't accept change. Davis in particular is one of the best leaders that's hated on because he never had a 'I done goofed moment' the other leaders did.
Three: Digimon Tri retcons this in a horrible way. First off, the writers kill off the 02 characters, minus Ken because they wanted Imperialdramon in their show just to beat him down with Original Digidestined Mega Forms. Then proceed to NEVER MENTION DAVIS, VEEMON, YOLEI, HAWKMON, CODY, ARMADILLOMON, OR WORMMON EVER AGAIN!!!!! They even bring in a new character and Digimon, but never mention the others because the writers hate them... with a passion. Sure, they "mention" Digidestined disappearing from around the world, but do they even check in with the other members of their team?? Nope. And you can't say 02 didn't happen, because Kari and TK still have their D3s, even though they don't Armor Digivolve anymore.
Four: What's different is that because Time has fixed itself (see the finale of the original Adventure), the gang can't stay overnight to continuously deal with the problem of the Digital World. They have responsibilities and lives. Sure, they were stuck in the first one, but only 10 minutes had passed since they left once all of them get back. And Tai got back like 5-8 minutes sooner and introduced us to Kari as the Eighth Digidestined (way to keep suspense since during the Myotismon arc when we're waiting for the other shoe to drop and people realize it's Kari). Beyond the danger of 'dying', it kinda would have felt in poor taste if a human, one of the main characters at that, actually died in the Digital World. But in 02, they can't stay in the Digital World to fix the problem in one go, because time is stabilized between Human and Digital World, they are gone in REAL time. Parents would be worried, Police and other Authorities would be involved, so they have to live a that double life in order to actually do their job without interference from the wrong people.
Five: Ken's mind may have been influenced by the Dark Spore, but that doesn't mean he wasn't on that path in the first place. The loss of his brother was a source for it to feed off of, magnifying that pain. When people are in a bad place, they start to feel darker parts of themselves coming into focus, and without a different influence to counteract it, they tend to fall into that Darkness. But it's still a kids show, so there needs to be an explanation why he went so far, and another villain to be unredeemable so Ken is more empathic by comparison.
Six: Dragomon actually digivolves into Daemon, even though Daemon is a Demon Lord and that's something totally different, but the point is that Daemon is the next form. Yes he's defeated by being send to the Dark Ocean, but it's implied that the Digidestined are going to have to face him sometime after MaloMyotismon and before that 20-year later shit.
Six: While it's true that TK should have been leader, it wouldn't have the same outcome. Davis, like Tai, needed to be the leader for those crucial moments that TK, like Matt, wouldn't be able to make the hard decisions that ended up winning the day.
Seven: The Digi-rap makes me laugh... because of how bad it is in retrospect.
In conclusion: The show is pretty cool, but not perfect. English Dub had a humor focus when there are times when it was unneeded, but again... Kids Show. Davis is hated because he never had a 'I done goof' moment and isn't praised when he takes a risk that pays off and saves the day. All in all, it wonky, silly, awesome, deep, and altogether an amalgamation good and bad that make it stands out from its predecessor.
Great video man. Glad to hear positive things about it from another person for a change.

    • @brightlight8852

RedDragonForce2 nah, Davis isn't a good leader, in fact he never leads. It's the other kids who decide over what to do and Davis just goes along with it. It felt more like they allow him to think that he's their leader to feed his ego. And no, he's not better in the JP version, his dialogue is mostly the same. In fact the creators admitted that Daisuke never grows and was specifically created to be a static character. Hence why 02 evolutions don't require any growth.
Many people gave 02 a chance but it just kept disappointing people.

You're talking out of your ass. Never leading? Never growing as a character?
Oh excuse me, I thought that Davis was the only one that actually had the courage and compassion to befriend Ken when he was still at a low point in his life and everyone else basically wanted him dead.
If you honestly think that any other character development/interaction of the franchise comes even close, I honestly don't know what to tell you, besides open your eyes.
The only real negative about Davis was his crush on Kari and how they emphasized it. And from what I remember, the dub was dramatically over-emphasizing on this compared to the original material.

    • @brightlight8852
      @brightlight8852 6 років тому +5

Dr. Florence Its the truth besides saying "Let's go!" Daisuke never acts as the leader of the group. And it isn't just the American version either, it's there in the JP version as well and perhaps even more true over there. For instance, the ones who really convinced the team to give Ken a second chance wasn't Daisuke but Takeru, Hikari and the older kids. In fact it's actually Hikari who brings up the idea of Ken joining in the first place. And then there one who brought Ken into the team was actually Miyako. Daisuke didn't convince them of anything, and really only made the situation worse. They weren't even against the idea of Ken joining they just felt that both sides needed time, a fact that Daisuke couldn't understand. In fact, the whole reason why Daisuke even forgave Ken at all was because of the crest of kindness literally telling Daisuke that Ken was a good person (Daisuke outright admits to this this so its not an opinion it's a fact).
In fact pay attention to scenes where the characters are deciding on their next plan of action, you'll notice that Daisuke more often than not stands away from the group. And often not saying anything at all.
And yes, he doesn't grow as a character the creators admitted to it, again it's a fact not an opinion.

You are wrong. The evil spore does not directly control people, the person's evil side makes it more powerful. So in a sense it increases his chances of staying evil but in reality this evil has an origin in himself, not the spore. Reason why the evil spore was never removed from Ken. He achieved a perfect symbiosis with it or whatever. And he still can use it's powers but he choses not to. The dark spore makes people smarter and more focused in their personal objectives, making friendship unnecessary. In order to use it's powers the person has to stay in an evil state of mind which is something everybody has. Reason why there are several other kids that have this dark spore and unlike Ken, these kids made the choice to get it.

I think he was corruped by darkness when he got depressed and angry and hating when his brother died, which fed the spore and corupted him. Its his dark side that everyone has when you push them enough. If the spore would have controlled him he wouldnt be so desperate to redeem himself.

I can never take this series seriously because of one moment. When Kari is in India about to cross the boarder into China. That whole moment made me facepalm hard

So there's something that you didn't mention, that occurs during something you did mention, that has long had me convinced Adventure 02 was intended to have something like 100 episodes, the series-wide pacing planned around that, then the ending rushed when they didn't get what they wanted.
When Daemon and his cohorts show up, Yolei nearly breaks down when her partner destroys DeviWoman to save her. This is when I realized that them being able to go home each night, plus the representation of the digital world as that black/grey/white grid, had the new kids treating it like a game. The reality of it didn't really hit them for most of the series, which was why they didn't get much development - it was supposed to come later.
Additionally to that point, the Japanese OP for Adventure 02 includes lyrics that go something like "the story has begun to move at full speed", implying to me that Adventure was a prologue and a much larger arc was about to begin.
(And just as an aside, since you use the English names for everything and may not have caught it - the 02 kids knowing the terminology is largely a dub thing. In the Japanese version, for example, V-mon is was nagging Daisuke to "Just say 'Digimental Up'!" for a good minute or two beforehand, Daisuke didn't just magically know the right words.)

Personally Ken is one of my favorite Digimon characters overall, then again if Digimon had a good character type it was the reformed villain. Impmon did that in Season 3, Koichi did that in Season 4, Keenan did that in Season 5... though id put Ken and Impmon above the other two.

You MAY argue that the "role" of redeemed character on Adventure was Gatomon/Tailmon (starting as the "Dragon" of the very evil "Big Bad"); but since she never did anything worse than knocking out other characters in a fair fight; all the "evil acts" she may have done were always offscreen.
-> She did try to outright assassinate Kari from behind, but she could not do it because of some subconcious instinct keeping from annihilating herself in the process [given the fact that they were soul_bonded (or something like that) from the very begining].

Yeah she wasn't a villain for too long and at that she was a lackey at best. Ken was the big bad for the first half of 02 and Impmon worked on his own until he wanted more power and then both regretted it in the end, whereas Gatomon had no consequences to suffer as she didn't do anything serious in the first place.

it's funny that to me it's my favorite one. I really saw it has the "continuation" of the first series. and the arcs were so great , that made me really like 02.
...really not gonna mention black wargreymon once... i mean i get u kinda "disliked it" but there were a bunch of good storylines u didn't even mention.

Billiam thanks for the awesome retrospective man, it's nice to see 02 get some recognition. I always wondered why the last third of the series felt so frenetic and I'll be honest and there are some episodes I adore from the second half, but going back to the series there are so many loose ends that it's insane. I think the most telling part was when Daemon came the hell out of nowhere to be the most terrifying villain in the series only to be swept aside for no real reason in the same episode. It really feels like they didn't know how they wanted 02 to end, which is a damn shame I still think 02 has some of my favourite moments in the franchise.

This season was a big hot mess, it reminded me of those cartoons in the 80's where they just made characters to make toys based on them.
But it was such a guilty pleasure.

Mae Dominguez agreed. But thank God that they kept Jeff Nimoy and Bob Busholtz as the dub writers and directors. And they kept the original cast, as well as using 4 previous VAs for the new cast. I can actually list them.
      Biyomon voiced yolei
      Mimi voiced Cody
      Leomon voiced wormmon
And demidevimon voice Ken and veemon

I disagree, they hve some heavy stuff in the earlier seasons, like kens breking bad phase because o his grief, and katis dark moments, and kens redemption arc. Overall its fairly pschological interesting.

I liked the black wargreymon episodes where he did his own thing and eventually met with Agumon
and also where they met Wizardmon's ghost
That was scary and also sad and tragic because I didn't know of the old series and it was jarring to see an old ally desperately warn them beyond death
And I love the intro song, the Indonesian dub was exhilarating
