Veemon is my favorite digimon and seeing his interactions with Terriermon and the cute egg rolling scene from the first part, all of it to me has charm. The English dub is funny in the way it uses its dubbing to its advantage, which is to use the voice actors in a way to give comedy and not have it be all serious. I always thought of it odd that they had smash mouth before shrek was a thing, and heck I still have the VCR version of Digimon the movie. Wait a second... Tai and Kari are half american? They have Thanksgiving dinners? In Japan?! My mind is blown. This uncle Fred character is a true enigma.
Japan does actually have a holiday called Labor Thanksgiving Day, but from what I could tell, it's entirely different, being more like Labor Day if anything, and there isn’t a holiday dinner for it, so that line is still stupid especially since they still live in Japan in the dub.
Agreed, I only ever watched it as a kid but I've always thought it was great, possibly just from kid memory, but I never gave much thought as to whether it was critically well received bc I just loved it for what it was
I can honestly never hate this movie. Maybe I'm biased with nostalgia, but even after rewatching it, I completely love it and see no problem with it, even the soundtrack
To be fair, I can believe that it could be at least partially true- I had the exact same 'This isn't Digimon...' reaction to it as a kid- like, obviously the content is directly about Digimon the Movie, but it's wtf enough to make you question everything. I saw it with my Mum at the time as a kid, and, with genuine concern about the quality of the movie we'd both just gone to see, she said 'I told you this film had really bad reviews...' and I remember really having to make kind of a big effort to convince her that this wasn't, in fact, actually the Digimon: the Movie we'd just paid to see. It was the most awkward filmgoing experience I've ever had until the movie started properly, so I can ABSOLUTELY see how something similar could ignite the fuse of an already ready-to-blow relationship.
I’m playing cyber sleuth on switch right now. It’s the first digimon game I’ve played since digimon world 1 and honestly I love it (except the hours and hours of useless dialogue)
Digimon World 1 is my personal favorite Digimon game due to nostalgia and just how amazingly complex the game is. Dawn and Dusk were the second Digimon games I played. Love them, they're really good. And the Cyber Sleuth games are also really good.
Any song on this soundtrack, which I still have a CD of, is connected to this movie any time I hear it. I still have the image of everyone tilting their heads as the missile falls down whenever I'm listening to The Impression That I Get.
Worth mentioning is that even though they cut the side plot about the older DigiDestined being captured, the blurb on the back of the DVD still mentions it ("a wayward Digimon kidnaps the DigiDestined"). Also, fun fact: When the studio was negotiating with the Voice Actor's Guild about the English voice actors' pay rates for Digimon the Movie, the Guild determined upon viewing the English cut of the movie that the changes made to the source material were so drastic that it was not a dub at all, but an original work. As a result, the actors had to be paid higher rates rather than the standard rate for dubbed animation (which is significantly lower). So yes, the English movie is so far removed from the original Japanese short films that it is actually not officially considered a "dub" at all.
Loved this movie. For all of it's quirks and all. My only way to watch it was by getting it from the library so I literally checked it out once a month for like a year. Eventually the library did a book sale and it made it in there and I finally got it for like $3.
I love that The Digimon Movie is having a bit of a comeback; I've seen some videos on Twitter where they edit all the absurdist jokes together into a couple minutes, and man, they still hold up better than most turn of the century humor.
I think this movie is perfect for an english audience that grew up with the american version of the show (saban), but not for the rest that adapted directly the japanese version (toei) to their language, at least for me even as a kid watching the movie felt weird and it even threw me off from the experience, it was like watching a really americanized media with so many jokes and "weird" music in something that at least here we were not used to at all, that's why watching the movie doesn't give me anything, while watching the japanese version gives me a weird kind of nostalgia, because even if the voices are not the ones from our dub, the tones and ost are something that reflect our version of the anime perfectly.
Here in Brazil we also got the dub from original japanese Adventure version instead of America's. I 100% agree with you. The movie for us probably felt weirder.
Thank you! I grew up with the Latin American dub, and I really disliked the whole USA vibes it had even with the Latin American voice actors trying their best 🤷🏽♀️ Also, the soundtrack was very weird with all the pop songs in comparison to the one I remembered 😂
@@elendoy they dared to replace Boleto to some generic and dated american songs, and put the american opening for the birth of omegamon instead of that Requiem the scene had in the original version :/
When I was younger, I thought the digimon movie were 3 movies. I got older and found out I was wrong I then got older and found out I was right. I also never remembered the Angela Anaconda segment. I must have checked out, or since I always watched this on VHS it must have always gotten fast-forwarded.
I loved this movie so much, despite it being a Frankenstein of sorts. It makes me feel so nostalgic, it’s the one DVD I’ve kept throughout all these years.
So on the poster the one that was singled out is actually supposed to be Terriermon, although their face never looks like that, and the Digimon by Willis is actually supposed to be Lopmon, but for some reason they gave them Terriermon's colour scheme, albeit with a darker shade of green You can tell due to the amount of horns on each of their heads and Terriermon has the single triangle under their chin, but Lopmon has the double triangle
I don't think it was Omnimon who said "Connection terminated," the gravely voice was Diaboromon's - right after, the same gravely voice grunts, "Willis."
@@saxor96 Noted, but we're not talking about the Spain dub, love :P And even so, a VA can do vocal variation to play multiple different characters. But the point you brought up is moot.
@@bluesoulwriter and I answer to that saying that, hearing the American dub, the voice of "connection terminated" isn't even close to the one that says "Wallace" after it.
The Digimon english dub is always something i love/hate, its corny, but it made them charming, cause they tend to take themselves too seriously when its unnecessary. Btw thank you for talking about Wargreymon’s bicep and thighs
@@razkable This is just my view on it I could be wrong, I think because sometimes Digimon is meant for mature audiences should be taken seriously and its meant to be taken that way while Pokemon can get away with it cause its for smaller audience that its just cute monsters fighting with no life ending high stakes
Billiam I just wanna say I absolutely love the content you produce. Each new upload is like a weird new flashback to my childhood, this was no exception. No other UA-camr has this affect/effect (words) over me. Please keep making oddly specific nostalgic content for me
I super appreciate you making this video. I don’t have much of a personal or nostalgic connection to Digimon, but as someone who grew watching the original English dub of Sailor Moon, I know what it’s like to reconcile with a piece of nostalgic media that isn’t quite as amazing as you remember and learning to find the value and the joy in it nonetheless. We need more positivity in this world; it’s okay to like and to love flawed and imperfect media. Also, people are way too hard on creators and frequently blame creators for decisions made by their management, so I love that you brought that up here.
The one you thought is lopmon, is actually terriermon. If you look to the right of that Digimon you'll see a more natural looking terriermon with 3 horns, meaning that one is supposed to be lopmon.
I remember really liking Willis. I hoped he'd be the second Digidestined. I still liked Ken. I was also really disappointed that he didn't create Diaboramon in the original anime. That sounded like a great idea.
This is a perfect companion piece to the original video, learning the hows and whys of the funny-in-hindsight changes really adds a lot, and of course the increased honesty and personal bits. Because really, everyone can review something if they keep at it, but dissecting from a personal perspective... And also, it's the best kind of period piece. The one that just is, that you just can't reproduce, like say.. FLCL
I'm so glad you touched upon those eyes at the top of the poster. I could never understand whose eyes they're supposed to be so I'm glad others also have no idea what they represent. Great review tho. Always loved Digimon too. Good memories...
This is a beautiful nostalgic film. I would still visit this movie from time to time today. Billiam; when international travel is a thing, go visit Japan and visit the scenic location shots of Digimon, movie and show. They are still around today and you'd definitely get a huge nostalgic rush
11:44 That's Wendingomon or... ...Endigomon as it was known at the time. Kokomon is the in-training form. It's because Willis never really got a chance to learn the evolutions' names or else he'd be calling Terriermon "Gummimon".
If it makes you feel any better, they are so adamant about not acknowledging the 02 epilogue (and directly contradicting it in stuff like Kizuna) that it might as well not have happened.
The digimon movie was so dam good. The first part (baby Kairi) and the second part (fighting diaboromon) were especially freaking good. Not just a good digimon movie, but a GOOD movie for anyone to watch... and kinda funny. I watched it recently and surprised I'm seeing this.
I personally enjoy the score more in the Digimon movie than in the original ones because I like the epic sound to them and at the same time the more ominous sounding scores in the originals feel out of place for me cause, I mean, it's Digimon, I know the characters are gonna win in the end because they always do, and the music doesn't make me feel otherwise. When it comes to Digimon, I'll take a heart pounding badass score over a ominous whimsical one any day.
The best part of Tais mom being a bad cook was Tais responses "We're in luck she burned them [liver sticks]!" "Don't say I didn't warn you..." "Izzy, you're the bravest kid I've ever seen." "Wait until you try the cake..."
Been watching this with my toddler I was his age when I saw it and still remember almost every single part minus the jokes. It's brought some kind of joy in me seeing him get just as excited as I was without even watching any Digimon piece of media and he just fell in love. Also now as a full blown adult constantly answering phones I totally relate and get to the line, "Didn't you hear me?! IT'S BUSY!!"
The animation in these movies is an aesthetic DREAM. Everything looks so good, especially the first segment and the internet scenes in the second segment. Just so gorgeous. And I couldn’t care less about Digimon. But that animation style 🤌
I never understood how All Star is inexorably associated with shrek in recent years. Back in the late 90s it was heard seemingly everywhere. It was in Rat Race, and Inspector Gadget too (among a few other films)

Ah, yes. Mamoru Hosoda Gets His Foot in the Door: The Movie.
@@TheMGMfan then why do we have what is essentially thanksgiving in animal crossing in november?
Don't they eat Kentucky Fried Chicken on Christmas?
@@katarinadreams6955 Because Labor Thanksgiving Day is celebrated every year in Japan on November 23rd.
Our War Game is and always has been my favourite part of Digimon.
it's the superior Summer Wars
Digimon last evolution just hit you in the feels
It’s the 20th anniversary
And digimon tri is the 15th anniversary
The shot when Greymons eye opens after they wake him up still makes me hype today.
The soundtrack definitely made the movie for me , I always make it a priority to listen to it when I'm riding my bike .
I didn’t know people ever hated this movie. I watched it on repeat more times than any other movie as a kid 🤷🏾♂️
Agreed, I only ever watched it as a kid but I've always thought it was great, possibly just from kid memory, but I never gave much thought as to whether it was critically well received bc I just loved it for what it was
From Scooby Doo to Digimon, Billiams just keeps going back and forth with his obsessions.
I can honestly never hate this movie. Maybe I'm biased with nostalgia, but even after rewatching it, I completely love it and see no problem with it, even the soundtrack
Billiam looks genuinely happy in this video which is kinda nice considering how done he looked in his scooby doo videos
its the internet, so I took that "led to my parents divorce" story with a HUGE grain of salt
And even if it were true, I feel like the kid is better off if that's what made his parents divorce.
The more times I read the story, the least I believe it to be true. It just screams made up IMO.
I really want him to get his hands on a copy of digimon dawn or dusk and digimon cyber sleuth.
I’m playing cyber sleuth on switch right now. It’s the first digimon game I’ve played since digimon world 1 and honestly I love it (except the hours and hours of useless dialogue)
@@Jonatello And if you're like me with the hours and hours of back and forth grinding.
The ps1 games were awesome too! Getting them again myself!
If I had his P.O. Box, I could send him those games
Digimon World 1 is my personal favorite Digimon game due to nostalgia and just how amazingly complex the game is.
Dawn and Dusk were the second Digimon games I played. Love them, they're really good. And the Cyber Sleuth games are also really good.
Having this on VHS was such a blessing for my anime and music taste
Some of the jokes in the english Digimon movie remind me of Ghost Stories.
DUDE! THE ORIGINAL MOVIES ARE HAVING A RE-DUB AND UNCUT VERSION IN ENGLISH! With the Digimon Movie being re-released in high definition.
For my entire life whenever I heard Smashmouth’s “All Star” I ALWAYS thought of Digimon the Movie instead of Shrek.
And Inspector Gadget apparently. Less said about that movie, the better.
I always connect One Week by the Bare Naked Ladies with this movie, too, lol.
@@auqustfire 100%
They officially Did It First as well 😂
Any song on this soundtrack, which I still have a CD of, is connected to this movie any time I hear it.
This being on the back of the box has bugged me for years.
Loved this movie. For all of it's quirks and all. My only way to watch it was by getting it from the library so I literally checked it out once a month for like a year. Eventually the library did a book sale and it made it in there and I finally got it for like $3.
This is the most late 90s/early 2000s thing I've ever read and I love it. Takes me back, thank you lol
You said it perfect. Omnimon stabbing him in the face is one of the most metal things I've ever seen in Digimon
I love that The Digimon Movie is having a bit of a comeback; I've seen some videos on Twitter where they edit all the absurdist jokes together into a couple minutes, and man, they still hold up better than most turn of the century humor.
Nostalgia, man.
"Our War Game" is essentially the prototype of "Summer Wars". Definitely recommended.
Thank you! I grew up with the Latin American dub, and I really disliked the whole USA vibes it had even with the Latin American voice actors trying their best 🤷🏽♀️
Also, the soundtrack was very weird with all the pop songs in comparison to the one I remembered 😂
@@elendoy they dared to replace Boleto to some generic and dated american songs, and put the american opening for the birth of omegamon instead of that Requiem the scene had in the original version :/
@@Matiasfv yep, the lack of Bolero was evident

I also never remembered the Angela Anaconda segment. I must have checked out, or since I always watched this on VHS it must have always gotten fast-forwarded.
Kind people rewind.
Heroes fast-forward past Angela Anaconda.
This was the only movie I would rent from the Blockbuster for like, three months straight. Nostalgia
I loved this movie so much, despite it being a Frankenstein of sorts. It makes me feel so nostalgic, it’s the one DVD I’ve kept throughout all these years.
So on the poster the one that was singled out is actually supposed to be Terriermon, although their face never looks like that, and the Digimon by Willis is actually supposed to be Lopmon, but for some reason they gave them Terriermon's colour scheme, albeit with a darker shade of green
You can tell due to the amount of horns on each of their heads and Terriermon has the single triangle under their chin, but Lopmon has the double triangle
I’m glad I’m not the only nerd who noticed that.
This movie was my introduction to the Digimon franchise. I can't really hate it because of that regardless of its flaws.
Let's hope that UA-cam doesn't pull down this version of the review.
I think he deleted it himself
He did. The original upload had file issues.
The english version is so funny and heartwarming, the movie is actually one of my favorite movie still
I don't think it was Omnimon who said "Connection terminated," the gravely voice was Diaboromon's - right after, the same gravely voice grunts, "Willis."
The voice actor is the same as Omnimon's, at least in Spain.
@@saxor96 Noted, but we're not talking about the Spain dub, love :P
And even so, a VA can do vocal variation to play multiple different characters. But the point you brought up is moot.
@@bluesoulwriter and I answer to that saying that, hearing the American dub, the voice of "connection terminated" isn't even close to the one that says "Wallace" after it.

Billiam I just wanna say I absolutely love the content you produce. Each new upload is like a weird new flashback to my childhood, this was no exception. No other UA-camr has this affect/effect (words) over me. Please keep making oddly specific nostalgic content for me
I love this movie and am happy to revisit it.
Wait, Omnimon said that line?? All this time I thought it was Diaboramon lol
Same
Same
It was Diaboromon. The voice matches much more with his than Omnimon's
@@yokaiju8909 It also sounds like WarGreymon and maybe they just forgot to add MetalGarurumon’s voice?
@@aft3r_darc WarGreymon has a more heroic and less gravelly voice. It is most definitely Diaboromon saying 'Connection Terminated'
The one you thought is lopmon, is actually terriermon. If you look to the right of that Digimon you'll see a more natural looking terriermon with 3 horns, meaning that one is supposed to be lopmon.
I love the movie, it's very nostalgic for me.
I remember really liking Willis. I hoped he'd be the second Digidestined. I still liked Ken. I was also really disappointed that he didn't create Diaboramon in the original anime. That sounded like a great idea.
"I like monsters" needs to be on a t-shirt.
This is a perfect companion piece to the original video, learning the hows and whys
of the funny-in-hindsight changes really adds a lot, and of course the increased honesty and personal bits.
This movie will always have a special place in my heart because it was my first exposure to digimon and one of my earliest memories in general
11:44 That's Wendingomon or... ...Endigomon as it was known at the time. Kokomon is the in-training form. It's because Willis never really got a chance to learn the evolutions' names or else he'd be calling Terriermon "Gummimon".
That actually makes sense here.
Nah, it's like nicknaming your Pikachu "Pikachu" and then evolving it lol
I still listen to the soundtrack every once in a while. Lmao

I was 3 when this movie came out (born 1997) and my brother was 8 (1992) and I can’t thank my brother enough for introducing me to digimon
The digimon movie was so dam good. The first part (baby Kairi) and the second part (fighting diaboromon) were especially freaking good. Not just a good digimon movie, but a GOOD movie for anyone to watch... and kinda funny. I watched it recently and surprised I'm seeing this.
the digirap is still my ringtone and I still can't believe people dislike it
I personally enjoy the score more in the Digimon movie than in the original ones because I like the epic sound to them and at the same time the more ominous sounding scores in the originals feel out of place for me cause, I mean, it's Digimon, I know the characters are gonna win in the end because they always do, and the music doesn't make me feel otherwise. When it comes to Digimon, I'll take a heart pounding badass score over a ominous whimsical one any day.
My brother and I WORSHIPPED the soundtrack. One of the best in cinematic history.
The best part of Tais mom being a bad cook was Tais responses
"We're in luck she burned them [liver sticks]!"
"Don't say I didn't warn you..."
"Izzy, you're the bravest kid I've ever seen."
"Wait until you try the cake..."
One thing I admire is the american version actually having Willis have a connection to the Virus digimon.
Willys: "I'm the one with the problem! Get over it"
Davis: "OK :)"
Best dialogue in movie history.
i like the new remake a lot but there was some thing about the early 2000's tech that was so fitting for digimon

I never understood how All Star is inexorably associated with shrek in recent years. Back in the late 90s it was heard seemingly everywhere. It was in Rat Race, and Inspector Gadget too (among a few other films)
Even though it was made for the ‘Mystery Men’ soundtrack, as made evidence that four of the cast members appear in the beginning of the music video.
