I have always loved the Lennon original but this is a very good cover, very well done and pays homage to the genius of both Lennon and Ferry. Brian took this Lennon classic and made it his very own!...Legendary!
One of the few songs that I lean more towards the cover than the original. Incredible cover. AND he did this song as an encore, if I am not mistaken. You can see the sweat on him before he even starts.
Was he the one who played on the Avalon album? If so, yes. Great bassist. It was a bit difficult to keep up with all their different bass players. I think they went through something like 20 of them over the course of their initial 10 year run.
What a performance, from the most talented band, and singer ever. Sheer class. With their orignal distinctive sound, and superb production. A deeply emotional song for me, for obviouse reasons. The best cover of a song ever. I feel every second of this song in my heart, those strings. Great music, from a time when, music was great. A timeless, haunting piece, as good today as ever. Just amazing. Thank for posting. Beauty beyond words. LOL .
I was very very fortunate to see Brian Ferry with Roxy Music at The Kleinhan's Music Hall (a beautiful, acoustically excellent venue), Buffalo, NY, circa 1976-1977.
I tend to be really late to the game a lot. I never heard this before and I was a teenager when Lennon was killed so I really should have been aware. It's incredible as good if not better than the original. I will.call it a tie because I love John Lennon's version with Nicky Hopkins on piano
I am happy to watch this video. Nice memories. I was at this concert at the time and really enjoyed it. I was right under the stage and watching everything closely. I have always liked Roxy Music very much. Especially when they were promoting the AVALON album. And that's not all! This evening they also had a concert by King Crimson:))) SuuuuuPeeeRRR !!!!
I have whole concert on vhs cassette the name is Roxy Music Live at Frejus France I have watched hundred times. This song is finale of the concert. Superb concert!
Für mich, der beste und schönste Musiker aller Zeiten. Mit Dir, habe ich meine Jugend verbracht. Love of mey live. Noch heute ❤ alles Liebe und Gute für Dich. Wir sind ja nicht nicht so lange mehr hier. Belive in Jesus ❤
Thank you and you band-player's for special's moments in muzik History!! I can't forget this very bad bad day, at the Same MOMENT, I greatulated my brother Ralf for his Birthday, came the horryble message about John Lennon is shot Down In the Radio! I coudn't believe..... Greating's from Germany ALEX B.
I won this album from whfs Annapolis MD, in 82. It was a promo, I think ep. Still have it,along with four other Roxy albums. Also have Brian ferry solo, think it was let's stick together. I Remember listening to Avalon late at night, the whole album would make chill out at the end of partying
I was fortunate enough to grab the import 45 of this tune. The studio version is just an astonishing performance from some extraordinary players. Very few people had the record, and most people had only heard it for the first time on a compilation. I kid you not, I still get goose bumps when I hear it...
I’m American, and obviously here in the states they weren’t anywhere near as huge as they were in their native UK, or in mainland Europe or Australia… so one thing I remember is how this absolutely masterful, transcendent tribute was essentially ignored by American FM radio. The only reason I ever heard it back then was because of my aunt, who was a rare American Roxy Music obsessive. In ‘81 when this came out, they were her favorite band. She had the import single and played it for me. I was just 13 at the time but I was blown away… both by the song itself, and by the utter disbelief that it wasn’t being played *AT ALL* on the radio. Such was often the case with these things here in the good old USA. A lot of truly amazing and essential bands that were megastars on the other side of the pond were just completely ignored over here. I’m still not sure why that is.
was performed on the 1982 tour in homage to the late John Lennon, who had died in december of 1980. That was an amazing tour and this was one of the high points of it.
@@mikestevens5837So let me make sure I have this right…. Lennon was ‘killed’, but he didn’t die. Is that about right? Oh, and it was America that killed him, not a mentally disturbed and completely obsessed fan who had been stalking him outside his home on the upper West Side of Manhattan for several days? Right… because no one ever gets murdered by stalkers anywhere else on earth other than the USA. So noted. Must’ve been a conspiracy too, I’m guessing. Several different government agencies involved? 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Os fãs de John Lennon que me perdoem, mas nunca gostei desta música cantada por ele. Agora ao ouvir Bryan interpretando ela, percebo uma nova canção. Parabéns! Sucesso Sempre !!!
The man singing the song...makes or breaks the performance...... The people around him can be the BEST..... EVER.... But the singer conveys the song and the performance of all.
Wow… every bit as great live as it is on record. One of my greatest regrets is that I never saw Roxy Music live. In my defense, I was a bit young (born ‘67), and they split in ‘83, only about 3 years after I really started getting into them. Anyway, this is every bit as great as the incredible single version. Man, they were a top notch band. Just jaw-droppingly good.
I wont get into the argument about who's is the best version. They are both beautiful in my opinion. A bit of trivia... Andy Newmark on drums who played on the last recordings made by John Lennon.
Bye..

I was watching a bit of Howard Hughes "Unexplained" show on Talktv last night. He did a great montage of John Lennon to the soundtrack of this song, the Lennon original. I still think this is the superior version though, just an absolute class cover version. I was about 7 I think when Lennon was shot in New York, I can't mind much about it though but there were plenty of Lennon songs in the charts at the time. It's only when you look back on it that you realise how impactful the event was at the time. Love this song, it's always stayed with me growing up. I just love the vibe of it and Bryan Ferry's whistling!. The whole thing is just the best nod to Lennon that you can get even after all this time.
Memories mixed up... From now on here I am... concerts, nights, days... I was shivering inside. Tonite I'll be alone... where do lonely nights go? Tell me...
He's the James Bond of rock music.
James Bond, Count Dracula, Oscar Wilde, and Ben from Blue Velvet… all wrapped up into one elegant, influential, and original motherf#€%er
Superb ‘analogy’
yeah Man......to grow up here and appreciate a guy named Ferry......is an accomplishment......
gotta give some love to the back up singers soulful bit too
Mr Ferry ladies and gentlemen! What a great performance!
Best version ever !!
Please make sure this is always on the internet. What a damn good performance after a damn good show.
This version was more of a shock really. Meaning a cover made better pure genius of roxy music
I saw him live at The Chicago Theater and he sang this and I wept throughout. Just beautiful.
Beautiful. Have tickets to United Center show in September- really hoping this is on their set list.
terrific performance, bryan ferry is soooo cooooooooooooool
Imagine! Ferry and Elvis singing this timeless song together, and John just listening

This song is the original, John Lennon covered it

I really love him!!!!!!!
I love Bryan Ferry soooooooooooooooooo much what a heart throb, Roxy is the ultimate in music in my view!!!!
Alan Spenner's bass playing is top notch stuff. It lends a completely new dimension to this song.
He deserved MUCH more recognition.

Roxy Music does it every time I hear their sounds. Voices, piano, guitar, sax, drums, whistling.....❤❤
