Very rare that a remake sounding better than the original. This is one of them. I remember this extended long version just once back in the early 80's when I was a small kid (10 yrs old) and I haven't forgotten it.
This is the last track I want playing at my funeral , my parents said everytime it came on the radio 📻 or tv 📺 I just stood still (I was born March 1980 so was barely a 1 or 2 when this was on those stations) now everytime I hear it im transported to a careless world knowing I'm around folk that love me and now folk are slowly leaving me I'm just a jealous guy
Such a beautiful dramatic ending with the whistling, synths and guitar, they all blend together to make such an emotional sound, I prefer this to the original, it's modern yet retro, great band with a unique lead singer.
I thank God for having been able to listen to Brian Ferry live singing this version when he came to Buenos Aries Argentina, the most beautiful song of roxy music
Could play the outro over and over!! Music as it should be, homage to the original, along with putting their own stamp on it Perfect cover version, and I believe it to be the best cover ever alongside A'Ha's Crying in the rain!
What about David Bowie's version of 'Wild is the Wind' (original by Nina Simone)? For me it vies with Roxy's version of 'Jealous Guy' as my all time favourite cover. Both are utterly exquisite, haunting, and mind-blowingly good. Both far outstrip the respective originals. Also check out Marvin Gaye's version of 'Yesterday'. Best eve cover of that song imo.
Agreed, the only thing I'd add from the Lennon version is that stunning one beat of the snare drum as Lennon begins whistling (mid-way through the song) but the Roxy Music version is a landmark in synth-electro music and far superior in terms of production.
IMO all or all of the cover versions Brian Ferry has done were better than the original..this one..."Smoke gets in your Eyes", "Those Foolish things"..to name a few.....to out do or even come close to a John Lennon classic is an achievement in itself
Roxy Music may not have recorded it if Lennon had not been murdered. It was recorded as a tribute to the great man. Both versions are great. The original will always set the mark & this cover is way up there too.
I first heard this as a 5 year old when it came out and obviously I had no clue what it was about at that age but I liked the sound and then a few years later I bought a Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music greatest hits cassette and found this version on it. Probably my no 1 tune👍
@@alanberkeley7282i thought that and ive said it before lennon would never say this is better than his version he was to arrogant bigheaded and a narcissistic
My late father played this so much..as has been said so many times.... it's rare to have a cover that is better than the original which is also brilliant....this extended version just takes it to another level though...thank you ❤❤
Love the final part of the song, the instrumental part...it makes me go to so many places and imagine so many things...wonderful and nostalgic things...yes you guessed alright...holding the crying.
Das beste "Cover" aller Zeiten. Hier passt absolut ALLES!!!!. Perfekte Stimme, sensationelle Musik...
Pretty much the definitive version of a wonderful song. It's no disrespect to Lennon to say that. Ferry has always been a wonderful interpreter of other people's songs, and it's obvious that he has a deep respect for this particular song.
I started to know them, Roxy and Ferry, just by this song..cover..I understood immediately, at first, they was what i was looking for in the music.. So, Then, they became my preferred, and i a great their devoted fan.. THIS SONG, SINGERED BY HIM IN LIVE, IS THE MOST EMOTIONAL PERFORMANCE IN THE HISTORY. BELIEVE ME!!!. Bye
Steve - many thanks for this - I have the self same 45 in my loft and have often wondered where the extended 'whistling end' has gone when listening to other versions on You Tube. I no longer have my turntable but can remember playing this with my wife to be alongside me, and I knew EVERY whistle, how it went and when it happened - you have made an avid Roxy Music fan extremely happy!
For me most covers don't do justice to originals. Here I feel they took a very good track by a legendary artist and actually perfected it. Loved this since I was knee high.
I love this song.......I listen to it every time I have man trouble :( lol, it doesnt matter whether I dumped him or he dumped me, this is the song I will put on and listen to over and over until I start to feel a bit better. The JL version is genius, but I love the instrumentals in this :)
I have had the privelage of being alone at a train station at 3 am and hearing this masterpiece in the train stations music feed. Pure magic!
Awesome!
Unbeatable

The extended version is on utube I've heard it a few times
Find the cover-version of 'The wind beneath my wings' by Sonata Arctica. Sooo much better than the original!

I specifically looked for the extended mix for the outro, so glad others know its the best part of the track 🔥🔥🔥
Genius synthesiser mastery
The whistling combined with the synth... is just epic. I could listen to that Forever...
I'm sure Lennon would have loved it !
Good cover
awesome isnt it i love it sooo much
The fade out from 3 minutes onwards is my favourite part of any song........Ever.
I hear you John 👌
+1. Amazing
Stargazer by rainbow is pretty magical too.

3:48 the start of an elevating 2 minutes 20 seconds mix of synthesizer, piano, electric guitar and whistle outro mastery. Epic and Brilliant!
What I love about this version is the respect shown by Roxy Music towards both the song and John Lennon.
One of the best remakes I've ever heard, better than the original IMO, I could listen to it for hours! especially the outro.
this is not a cover just a remake sung by roxy music a bit longer
@@coxhoe789ehh….John Lennon’s original never happened , then?
TRUE
You said that not me, Cover/Remake whatever! Roxy Music's is still better IMO@@kjetilvaarlund8342
@@coxhoe789 Yeah I know! 😀
Just loving the extended ending. How the music of today could ever match the emotions of it.
The best remake ever made! Much better than the original. Bryan Ferry is a God-given Voice
John had a very good voice, Brian simply stellar....
This song will never die. The extended bit at the end screams powerful emotion.
One of the most beautiful ballads ever.
50 YEARS OF ROXY MUSIC! RIP John Lennon. Masterpiece!
Eh? You don't mean Brian Ferry?
love this so much ! those synths and whistling genius played it 1000 times thank you for this !❣❣❣❣❣

What a beautiful, and elegant tribute to John Lennon; As only Roxy Music could.
one of the most beutiful songs ever written and played, and roxy music cover is pure genious.

Me too, awesome!
Whenever I hear this song - Which is a lot as it's my most played on my iPod - I can't help but skip it to the end to hear the outro.
Utter class.
still brings a tear to the eye
The bass and synths are perfect, so much love for this version.
Bryan ferry and his whistle so made up my day🤘
Bravo, the fantastic outro deserved extending. Pure magic.
After listening to this Roxy masterpiece several times, I have discovered that my whistling is better than my singing.
How to make perfect a song that already marked the history of music...
And this long version is special!
This is a very special song. It just gets better and better as it gets closer to the end.
One of the rare instances where the cover version was better than the original and it was a big ask.
Agreed, the only thing I'd add from the Lennon version is that stunning one beat of the snare drum as Lennon begins whistling (mid-way through the song) but the Roxy Music version is a landmark in synth-electro music and far superior in terms of production.

I'm so sorry that I can only give thumbs up once to this. Wanted to do it a thousand times!!!
Still listening to this after so many years and it still feels like one of the best songs ever.
The song gives me chills, Ferry's voice is beautiful, and I do think John Lennon would've told him he loves Roxy Music's cover of Jealous Guy
Lennon wouldn't have told him he liked it let alone loved it his ego was bigger than liverpool
Roxy Music may not have recorded it if Lennon had not been murdered. It was recorded as a tribute to the great man.
Both versions are great. The original will always set the mark & this cover is way up there too.
