I enjoyed your intro Steve, very appropriate 😂😂😂🙂😂. I really enjoy negative painting very much too.
OMG This first part reminded me so much of myself. I talk to the trees and bushes all the time!!!
BEST intro ever. So funny LOL 😂
Yes! Another member of "The Men Who Love Trees!" I was just on the 'Tube channel Learn From Masters, enjoying the work of Peter Mork Monsted and Ivan Shishkin. Truly men who the trees loved back.
I think your method with painting trees is good, I have never found it easy to paint trees, so I practise when I can.
Loved that intro 😂😂
As expected, masterful, informative, thoughtful, and amusing! I absolutely love your work, master ability, and your willingness to share so much with so many freely. You are truly an absolute treasure! Sincerely, thank you.
You've heard of tree hugs, now get ready for tree handshakes...
🤣🤣🤣🤣
watching the intro made me miss minnesota so much! not to mention Wetpaint. No art stores here, such a sad thing. Thank you for your videos!
Halarious 😂introduction to this wonderful informational video. I have just recently been studying how to do painting & drawing negative spaces & shapes in my own paintings. This is definitely a great skill to master. Thanks for sharing this concept!
I love trees too. My absolute favourite natural elements. Mountains, ocean etc comes after that.
Best intro EVER!!!
Sir, I love your teaching and amazing work. Thank you so much for sharing!
I love trees. They are my best friends haha. "You're throwing a lot of shade" really got me 😂 okay, back to the video haha 😂
You are not only a master artist, you are a master of explanation and discerption. Also love the touch of silly humor thrown in!
I need some green, oh hi Steve.
Thank you so much for simplifying & isolating the shapes of the tree foliage. I recently went to Brookside Gardens to draw and felt so overwhelmed by all the trees and different shapes that I was paralyzed. I knew I bit off more than I could chew! Finally found a wooden bench snuggled against some trees, sat down and drew part of the bench in the foreground with a few limbs of leaves hanging.over from behind. only to discover the pretty sketch book I'd purchased was probably for journaling and not drawing because even my gentle kneaded eraser was tearing up the paper fibers! Guess that's a sign I'm going to journal! 🤣 Now to find a safe sketchbook and go back to Brookside gardens.& try again
Simplification can be a very elusive practice. It takes thought, experimentation and practice.
You have a gift for teaching; breaking down the complex into doable parts and communicating the important points. This was very helpful. Foliage is a major challenge but essential for painting any natural setting. Thank you!.🌳
Ha ha great beginning! I like to depict trees and I talk to them too ha ha !
Very nice. Almost closing the eyes helps get the main negative shapes for me . Great stuff again. Thanks.
Fabulous advice as always Steve. Thank you!
You bet! Thanks for stopping by Louise!
Thanks for an excellent exercise!
We have hemlocks and hickory on our property. I've always been too intimidated to try painting them but with your teaching I am going to give it a try. Thanks.
Thank you for the lesson!
That was the best intro to any video that I've seen in a long time 🤣🤣🤣
Thank You Mr Steve. Hi to Reese😂
This is great! Foliage is a pictorial element with such variation and so many overlaps! It's time well spent doing exercises like this that help reduce that apparent complexity to paintable shapes. We're going to have to bookmark this one for future reference!
I also use procreate and love watercolors! Seeing you use both in this video is very exciting!
"Internal negative space" The KEY for me
Very helpful Steve! Im in the Sierra Nevada mountains and will try this technique with the many pine trees. 😊
Trees ❤. Good topic, how to see and study a subject. Thank you. (Loved the intro ☺️)
😀So great! Nice humour. Love your videos!!
I love your quirky intros😂
The best, aren’t they?
Thank You again! It has been so much easier to understand the concept of negative shape watching you explain it as you draw and paint. I appreciate the time and effort that you spend on us strangers-- myself and other youtubers out here. I am truly grateful.
P.S. When I saw the thumbnails I thought you were going to be teaching how to paint individual leaves. At a quick glance, these studies are everything you explain and more. The Lord has blessed you with a beautiful gift & a gracious way of sharing it. 2 Cor 5:9 & 17. May the Lord continue to Bless You & Thanks for the blessings you bring to me w/ this instruction.
Thank you!
I love the way you interact with the trees and you made the techniques look so easy. Thank you.
Fantastic! I just got some cool pics of leaves and flowers today from the college gardens around town!! Thank you!
This was a very good exercise Steve, including the intro! I makes sense the way you explained and demonstrated. I am a tree lover also, some say a bit of a sap! lOL!
Thank you this lesson is timely for lilacs stumped me. The color is accurate, and the shadows are barely defined. Love your teaching style
Thank you for this amazing video! UA-cam just recommended this video to me and I instantly followed.
You make it look so simple! thanks a lot
I thought I was crazy.. you help me accept my talking to plants 😂
The introduction made my Saturday. So funny. But also a super helpful video.
It made my Sunday😂
Thank you for the study presentation and clarifying how to simplify the approach to foliage! As always, you make helpful and entertaining tutorials! 😎🎉😊
Love the intro. I love trees and plants too. That’s just great 😊👍
You are amazing!
Thanks 💕
Thank you for that tracing example on Procreate; excellent visual reference for us! I'll definitely try a bunch of these.
Great exercise, thanks for this video! I'm definitely going to try this.
Wonderful. Thanks!
Thanks very much Steve, this was a really useful video, and I will certainly give it a go. I always have difficulty picking out negative spaces but am fascinated by your videos.
This is just what I needed, thanks❤!
hahaa love the intro 😂
How can you be so cute?!
Cool. From “ like” number 667:)
Hi Steve, I'm so grateful for you and your channel I find your channel is head and shoulders above all of the other channels, thanks so much for all of your videos I did notice that you used watercolor brush pens,I could not find one of your videos that covers this subject, you mentioned Zebra brand in this video are they your preferred brand. it seems obvious that you use pen brushes to do sketches with, and I can only assume you use them for detail work also. If you cover bush pens use in a video is it possible to let me know what the title of that video is? Thank you so very for sharing your masterful talent and techniques.
Hi Steve. I love your channel. I struggle with trees and foliage so I tried this exercise. Mine looks bad. The problem is I don’t know why it looks bad. I have darks. I have lights. I’ve tried to suggest some leaves (but not too many). I’m now going to go try it again. Maybe I’ll try different greens. I’m determined to get this.
Are you studying reference when you do it? It's a key factor.
@@mindofwatercolor Thanks Steve. I was trying to paint from life. Maybe I should try taking a photo so I can zoom in.
You said not to focus on color but I would like to know if you can guide me in mixing various greens.
Experimentation is the best way. Try various yellow and blue mixes. Then try premixed greens and mix in complements (reds). You'll get all sorts of interesting shades.
Love all your work! Question...have you tried Fluid watercolor paper? Love it for pen and wash...
I have. Not a fan personally but it would be a good paper for line and wash, yes.
Your intro made me laugh!!
I don't have Azo green but I do have Nickel Azo Yellow. Whats the difference between Nickel Azo Yellow & azo green ?
Nickel Azo Yellow is a little more gold than Azo Green. Azo Green is usually called Green Gold in other brands.
@@mindofwatercolor That's great news because I have Green Gold! & Nickel Azo Yellow because I remember you said you LOVED using that color! Thank you
What software are you using on iPad?
Procreate
Is that procreate on a tablet?
Yes. I have an iPad.
How do I become a patron..?

“Doesn’t make you look fat at all!😂😂😂
😂
0:04 Are we allowed to smack the bums of trees, just like that? 😂
wait i thought this guy was dead?
