    Hi Karoline! This was an interesting episode. ♥️ Your first statement really resonated with me. I started out the same time than Laura and it was a bit hard not to compare myself on her and other superstars whose channel skyrocketed all at once. I was looking for faults in my filming, content and persona until I realized that it’s not helpful to look for flaws.I enjoy filming my podcast and interacting with my community. It might be smaller than most of the podcasts but it has brought me so much joy and new friends to talk to. ❤

      I can so relate - all knit friends I have started podcasting after me and all have done better than me 😂 But you’re right - it’s all about the joy and new friends you get 🥰 I love your videos on your many WIPs. As someone who’s too monogamous to have many WIPs I always enjoy watching others talk through theirs 😂

    Thanks for this! Lots of great info 👍🏻. My perspective: I’ve let a lot of expectations go. I know that tutorials and “traditional” knitting podcasts do well, but I’ve done that for a while and I don’t feel like doing that anymore. I just make the type of videos that I feel like making now. Which is a bit erratic and all over the place. The algorithm doesn’t really like it and my views are down, but I don’t really care about that. Just doing what I want and if people want to watch that: bonus.

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  Рік тому

      That’s a very good perspective Melanie and I think the right one too! As much as views are important it’s so easy to lose sight of what you enjoy in the process of chasing it.

    Hi Karoline! I love that you opened this conversation. I think you’re right in that it’s important to hold on to why you are podcasting in the first place! If you enjoy it, that’s what matters and that is what will shine through!❤ (PS your space is lovely and I subscribed 😊)

    I found this episode really helpful, especially to an older podcaster who's only grown super slowly, but continues to keep plugging along! Oh my, it can be disheartening to grow at a snail's pace but I believe that once I just stop staring at the subscriber count, I will be much better off! Thank you for putting out such a quality, lovely podcast Karoline. I've always enjoyed you : )

    Hi Karoline! This is a a great video, full of pertinent points on a topic that probably doesn’t get discussed enough. Also, it was nice to hear someone publicly say out loud that wondering about the whys of how some channels skyrocket, and then starting to feel down on what our own channel is doing, is a real thing! It can be hard not to compare… As for editing, I do everything on my Samsung phone, editing using the paid version of the InShot app; I don’t think I’d podcast if I couldn’t have the process so streamlined! Personally, in watching other podcasts, I do appreciate good editing, but find that I don’t really enjoy ones that are kinda super slick & feel reminiscent of tv. I like the feeling of hanging out with a person as they chat about & show their crafting- informal, like friends talking. Getting a balance can be tricky- cutting out too much rambling, but leaving enough ‘realness’ so it doesn’t feel like watching a presenter talk at you. That’s what I like, but I know others differ! I do enjoy B-roll, and am starting to do a bit more on my episodes. I’m so pleased with how the editing apps make doing these things so much easier than it was even just a few years ago!

      Immediately subscribed the minute I saw the pupper :)
      That's another really great option for editing and you're absolutely right that editing has really become much more accessible than ever before. With that I also think it does make the whole comparison of yourself extra heightened because it is another aspect where you can feel you're not as good as everyone else.

    Hi Karoline! Thank you for making and sharing this video. I found it both realistic and encouraging. I've struggled with some of the same questions and comparisons you mentioned and thought you spoke about them so well. When I don't grow for a while, I ask myself, "Do I even want to do this?" To my surprise, I realized that I do want to keep podcasting, because I genuinely like it! I'm a dreamer and have grand plans for creating content that I can't keep up with right now, so I'm trying to focus on my limited availability and just do the best I can with that. I hope to view my little group as a special community and encourage comments and interaction. I think that's what I value most in all this. :)
    Also, I use DaVinci Resolve to edit my podcasts and would highly recommend it. It's professional quality (on par with Premier and Final Cut Pro), but shockingly free (although there's a paid version to get more features). I found it easy to learn with the help of some youtube tutorials. For full disclosure, I have a background in graphic design, but no real training in video for whatever that's worth.

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  Рік тому +1

      I have gone through that process quite a few times, and sometimes I've found it's great to take a breather till you're ready to come back. And you're so right about limited availability - I have a looooong note on my phone on all the videos I'd love to make if I had the time.
      I have actually heard of this before at work and had it installed once but never really got started but it is an excellent suggestion. I know it is known as one of the absolute top class colour graders, even if you use other editing softwares for the rest. UA-cam is a great resource for learning though, I've been using it loads just to get started with Final Cut Pro.

    Hi Karoline, I really enjoyed this video. I don’t have any ambition to make a podcasts, but it was very interesting to hear. And about that old videos are still watched as well, I am one of them. When I come a cross a new podcast I very often start bing watching all the podcasts from that person, from begin until now. I sometimes puts me off if somebody has already got lots of episodes ☺️. For me it’s like reading a book, you start at the beginning and have the complet story at the end. I just come across your channel, but will be watching your old episodes soon. Enough knitting time to be accompanied with a nice podcast. Have a nice day!

    Loved this video concept! One of the things I learned about myself while I was in undergrad is that I am very much a verbal processor. This means I often do best working out my own thoughts by externalizing them. I podcast because I think trying to articulate my thoughts and choices about knitting helps me to understand them better. I also love how much opportunity for learning podcasts create in an informal way!

    Such an excellent discussion - many thanks. Although I don’t intend to make any podcasts, I love watching knitting videos and after a number of years doing so, boy do I have views!!! You are quite right that being yourself and being honest are really important. Personally I couldn’t give a rats about what people are drinking or what their social media accounts are, and the sooner they get to the knitting, the happier I am. For example, light a candle if you must, but I’d rather not waste time watching you do it - however that’s just me and some people love all that stuff.
    If someone is new obviously you give them lots of room to find their feet and I think your advice will help people get off to a great start. And may I say that I am enormously grateful to everyone who has ever gone to the trouble of putting up a knitting podcast.

    I found this episode very interesting, even if I'm not planning to podcast any time soon. It made me think about what I enjoy and what I don't about the postcasts I watch. I realize that I like diversity of content and perspectives, that after a while I get bored to listen to the same take (or sometimes verbatim repetition) on designs and designers. I'm delighted when people's personality and quirks shine through. I enjoy your podcast because I perceive a fundamental honesty and original opinions on knitting and life. You have so many great points to share Karoline! I also record on my iPhone (still rocking an iPhone X lol), and I have glare issues with my glasses too haha! I also try my best to film only during the day, and always use a tripod! It was one of the best investments in my opinion 😊
    I love that you started by touching on growth. I’ve also had people ask me about getting more viewers and I honestly don’t have an answer. I got picked up by the algorithm with my first video and gained a couple hundred followers right away. Then I got more when I released my first pattern roundup video. What I usually do instead is ask people if they enjoy making videos? If they say yes, than I say just keep doing what you’re doing and eventually viewers will come. You have to like doing it to make it worthwhile, otherwise it will just feel like a chore.
    I use InShot to edit all of my videos and it’s super easy and really intuitive! They offer a free version and a paid version (which is $50 flat). I do everything on my phone, which can be tricky because it’s small, but it also means I can edit on the go, wherever I am.
    On the subject of authenticity, when I set out to make my podcast, I knew I wasn’t going to follow the standard style of fo, wip, acquisitions because I’m a slow monogamous knitter, so I chose to do pattern reviews instead 😊 this also made it easy to transition into adding some other style videos to my channel that have been quite popular ❤
    Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

      I completely agree with you in regards to views and honestly the same for followers on Instagram. Some people are "luckier" than others and grow very fast but at the end of the day I am a strong believer in that the best growth, no matter the speed, is the one where you stay true to who you are in the process.
      I am very impressed you have the patience to edit on your phone - I did it once on my iPad and that was enough 😂 But I know you often get much quicker once you're comfortable with your process.

    Hi, as someone who never plans to make knitting videos but watches them regularly, I was interested in your first comment. I have often wondered why some channels seem to have more success than others. I think it is linked to pattern design. Channels often explode on your feed when the vlogger launches a pattern. Personally, I enjoy chatty videos, with lots of knitting chat. I don't mind other stuff, but often fast forward the music segments. I don't mind personal chat and enjoy other recommendations, e.g. books TV. A pet hate (although I get helping a friend) is when a group of friends only talk about patterns designed by their friends. I am not bothered by fancy editing and don't mind dogs barking or someone answering the door. I appreciate that not everyone agrees, and the beauty of UA-cam is the ability to find content that meets your needs. I also think the vlogger shouldn't be afraid to do what they want with their channel. It is another creative outlet for them and shouldn't necessarily be about pleasing viewers or growing their channel. ❤️

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  Рік тому

      I have certainly noticed it with patterns as well - and it's often made me question if there's something wrong with *me* for not wanting to design patterns. But as you say in your very final sentence; it is about reminding myself that these videos and knitting in general are a creative outlet for me, and not necessarily what would make me more popular.

    • @stephanieharding1135
      @stephanieharding1135 Рік тому +1

      Never think there's something wrong with you for not wanting to design a pattern. While it is lovely to see people develop in their knitting journey to become a designer, I equally like videos of people who knit other people's patterns. There's space for them all. It is always important to remember that we are victims of algorithms in social media, and I question whether 'popularity' is even a thing. X

    I so appreciate your point about podcasts feeling insincere if they brush off the challenge of knitting and talk about half a dozen FO’s every week! There’s one person who comes to mind right away; I think they make beautiful designs, but at a certain point I feel like I can’t relate to them because they produce sooo much. (Which, good for them to be clear! Who wouldn’t want to spend all day everyday knitting?) I however, have a full time job, which while it allows me to afford this hobby with relative ease, it also means I don’t have much time for knitting on a daily basis. It can be really hard to see someone else who just cranks out the knots when I only wish I had the time!

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  Рік тому

      I have definitely had periods like that Mariah where I've just had to admit that watching other videos just made me feel upset I wasn't being as productive and it can be a bit of knitting killjoy at times, I think. I watch loads of different knitting and crafting podcasts, some extremely polished with lots of cut scenes and music etc. but the ones I enjoy most as the ones where I feel the people are genuine and not trying to "sell" a perfect knitting/crafting life. There is a heck of a lot of work that goes into crafting not to mention talent. Just also want to say that you are definitely a favourite (not that your video's aren't "polished" they are!).

    I agree with so many of your viewpoints! But I think the point that most resonated with me is to be authentic and really continue to reflect on WHY you are doing these videos. Without that reflection, I find the numbers-game tends to dominate my brain space. I love this growing community of fiber content creators, because it creates a diverse place to explore what you're interested in and find friends with similar (or even dissimilar) tastes in your hobby! And if everybody just started doing things "for the numbers" I think it would become too repetitive. Stay creative and do what makes you happy!
    Also, for anybody wanting to explore free video editing. Blender has a video editing software that is completely free and has a ton of options! It has a bit of a learning curve but in my opinion it is worth it. I decided it was the best option for me because I find the thought of investing money into my channel would add stress and I am an android/windows user so my options are limited for other decent free software's.

    Thanks for making a video on this topic. Really enjoyed it and I agree with you on all your points. So important about not comparing oneself to other podcasters. We are so many having a knitting podcast and people only have so much time. I am so grateful for the knitting community and for the those who watch my little channel. For me not beeing able to have a "normal" job. Podcasting and talking with people through the comments gives me so much joy! I really enjoy your podcast, Karoline. You are always so calm, honest and inspiring. And you knit the most beautiful things😊

    For me I have to be able to relate to the podcaster and their content. I love love love your podcast and you as a person. You are so honest and down to earth, knitting is beautiful and I feel like when I am watching your podcasts, that I am right there in the living room with you having coffee and chatting about life. Some podcasters I started following have changed and grown so much that I feel I cannot relate to them anymore or their content. Your podcast is just so wonderful, honest and fun! You also try on your knitwear and that is what I absolutely love the most. We can see exactly what it actually looks like on and you are very authentic with your work and your channel. Your channel is one of my favorites .

      I have definitely watched people who have grown and changed to the point that I no longer felt it was for me, and I've always considered it a natural part of life, even if you maybe miss what it once was.

    I enjoyed watching this episode even though I have no intention of starting a podcast. I found your approach very practical and down to earth. As a viewer, I do not enjoy the Vlogmas type of videos. I like watching standard formats more (WIPS, FOS, Knitting dreams, knitting information, etc.) I do like getting to know podcasters and know about their lives, but I don’t really want to watch them run their errands or go grocery shopping. Although, I do like seeing some scenery from around the world, just not lengthy portions of the podcast. My personal preferences. I will tune out of a video if their lighting is poor or their video is blurry or the sound is poor. I like the clarity and simplicity of your editing and filming.

      Thanks so much Karen - it is always interesting to hear what people are drawn to! I wish I had a knack for vlogging but unfortunately it would probably just be watching me run errands and walk the dog 😂 I also tend not to watch anyone with poor sound or very bad lighting.

    Really interesting video thank you! Personally I am less likely to watch videos as they come up and normally binge 3 or 4 in a row several months later as I have done here! I don't enjoy too much algorithm talk or people trying to film whilst also distracted by kids/dogs. I like seeing them but I appreciate when they cut long conversations out where they aren't talking to me

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  Рік тому

      All of that is fair! I also find myself enjoying waiting till I have a few episodes to catch up on. It can be a hard balance with those pesky dogs! I often find that if Fayla has been an extra big menace during a video I would often rather refilm.

    I’m not a podcaster, I don’t have any desire to be one, but i really enjoy your podcast and ones like it where people talk enthusiastically about knitting and their projects and things they like etc. I’ve found a few other podcasts through you and that’s been great too. I don’t have many in person knitting/crafting friends so i really enjoy watching chatty videos about knitting while I’m knitting (or recently spinning). I actually really like that you have (and always have had) a neutral background and I’ve always found the quality of your videos very good and i especially like the try on clips where you show the project properly being worn. 😁

    Thank you for releasing this lovely video, it's such a niche topict that isn't talking about much online, is it? I've just started my podcast in the new year (feeling very called out, aha), and the biggest point I am taking from this video is the reflection aspect of "what do people like about my video", "what makes my videos unique" etc. It might be a tricky balance to produce content that satisfies me and also meets expectations/preferences of others. Definitely started my channel for record keeping, but I can already tell I like the sound of my own voice and being able to chat away without interruptions like you said 🤭

    • @KarolinesKnits

      You’re right there’s such a fine balance between what you find satisfying and what others expect - and sometimes you get it right and sometimes you get it wrong 🥰 Thought it was a fitting time to make this after our chat, I felt myself thinking about it after.

    I've been struggling a bit with motivation for my channel lately. I feel like UA-cam really really promoted my first podcast episode, so it got several thousand views, but then has not really promoted my other videos, which have gotten like 100 or 200 views. It felt like a bit of a bait and switch almost? So it's a bit demotivating in that way I guess. I also started making videos in French as well as in English and I think that maybe confuses people sometimes? Then I have a tendency to be very hard on myself as well.

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  Рік тому +1

      I can relate to being hard to yourself Sylvia - I have certainly been hard on myself many times, especially at the start when the numbers felt more important to me (tbh I have now just made peace with the fact I may never grow much bigger and actually that helped me - appreciate how many I have and not how many I could dream of!)
      It's interesting with making videos in more than one language as I'm not sure. I decided to stick to English to save myself recording the same thing twice, but I do think it has excluded me from the Danish podcasters (of which there's a surprising number)

      @@KarolinesKnits Yeah, I'm just keeping on going and trying not to listen to the mean voices in my head haha!
      Yeah I considered sticking to just English, but I've been living in France for over a decade and I watch French podcasters and vloggers and the like and didn't want to exclude myself from that community... but since I am American, I don't want to exclude myself from the English-speaking community either y'know? I guess we'll see how things go!

    Thank you for this video. As a podcast view and not a creator I’ve been looking for a place to say these thing…LOL. So as a viewer I can give my two cents in what keeps me interested and what will make me skip on by. First, Sound is what keeps me watching or not. I tend to knit while watching so what I have found is when a B roll is inserted and they change to some sort of music it gets me to “look” at the screen because lets face it, I can’t constantly watch when knitting. Also one huge thing that will make me stop watching is a creator that drinks or slurps whatever they are drinking. When you say “grab something to drink and knitting” doesn’t mean we should have to hear you gulp. (Just my big pet peeve). And on the topic of sound, when someone is wearing their mic and it rubs against their neck or collar and we can’t hear what they are saying. Now for what really keeps me coming back to a podcast, genuine personality. Whether you just love what you are making or love to share your life/family, if you are a kind, honest soul then I feel you will bring more like minded viewers to you. Karoline, thanks for another great topic!!

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  Рік тому

      I feel you SO MUCH on the gulping - it is 100% intentional there is NONE of it in my podcast as I can't stand it 😂 I really really have to like someone to keep watching if there's a lot of it.
      Interestingly, research on videos and enjoyment have shown that good audio is really important and I definitely do think it makes a difference. At some point I would like to invest in better recording equipment all around, including a microphone, but I don't think a clip on would be my first choice because it is hard to get right and while filming you can't hear if it isn't sitting right. At work when we film, the media producer wears headphones for that exact reason to make sure the sound is right.
