I really enjoyed the more casual discussion about cloth and style. I resonated a lot with the combination of masculine and feminine elements

I am in my late 30s and have gone through many different cloth styles and sizes over the years. When I entered my 30s I started to gravitate towards more classic clothes and I also started working in an office so that changed my style as well. I try to view my style as an adventure and buy or make more classic items with a few fun pieces to pair with those classic items when I want to change it up. I also try to buy used clothing that is well made so it’s not as expensive and more sustainable. Loved your thoughts on this topic 😀

I’m a continental knitter as well. I used to get twisted stitches but now I just pick up the front leg of the stitch which gives me a “happy” stitch. I learned that at a yarn festival 😂

Oh that’s interesting! I’ve not heard that technique before!

It is lovely to have an update from you! My personal style has evolved a bit and I've finally settled on two or three distinct silhouettes, all needing enough "masculine" or crisp, defined structure or else I just look frumpy. Knitting wise, that has meant:
    1. Cardigans are infinitely more useful to my wardrobe, no matter how much less fun they are to knit. The tailored structure of the base layer offsets the "softness" of the knitwear.
    2. I should think very very very carefully before knitting in anything heavier than 4-ply. Heavier weight garments lack that polished look on my frame that I need to feel confident and put together. (This of course goes out the window for comfy house garments, but is something I constantly remind myself for work and life garments)
    3. There is no such thing as a single "good length" for sweaters. Two silhouettes work well with natural waist cropped tops, but one needs high hip without skimping or even tunic length. I now pick yarn and patterns according to which base silhouette, which themselves are dependent on the seasonal weather.
Infallible? No. But infinitely more practical and less likely to have total miscues when making garments (I knit and sew).

Your first point is something I need to come around to! Infinitely more drawn to sweaters but it means my wardrobe is really lacking cardigans 🥲 I like the sound of crisp! I think it’s taken me a while to realise that masculine elements can be really flattering. And you’re right about weights too! I prefer to wear DK weight when I’m going out of the house and want to look put together.

It was so good to see an episode from you pop up! I very much enjoyed your thoughts on your personal style. I struggle with having a smaller or capsule style wardrobe because I am a "mood dresser". I've been doing a lot of research and introspection and apparently some of how I approach clothing could be related to ADHD. Some days I dress for a certain vibe, almost like putting on a character in the morning. Its so hard to describe. But overall I enjoy feminine details, sometimes over the top feminine, with vintage feel. I enjoy flow, floaty and comfortable but I very much agree your phase of life can affect your clothing choices because sometimes vintage over the top feminine just doesn't work with the mom of 2 active kids phase so I do a lot of shorts or jeans and t-shirts or I have my "I swear I'm a put together mom" looks for school events and things. So my closet has trouble staying organized. I have also had a bunch of roller coasteering as far as body composition in the last 3-4 years so I have whole sections that don't fit but I am not ready to get rid of (see ADHD sentimental attachment to EVERYTHING) and I've hit a point where I have to be more careful with spending (see: kids are expensive). I do enjoy lots of color and have tried to move away from black after undergoing color analysis and being draped a Light Summer. I use Navy and Grey as my base colors as much as possible but I often dress in "summer popsicle" or "Easter egg" colors. I look more well rested and fresh in clear, vibrant colors that aren't too heavy. so, in conclusion, I am a clothes horse.

I love it Somer! You do look beautiful in colours and floaty feminine vintage styles. I feel the same about sorting out my wardrobe this time - I want clothes that fit but I don’t want to get rid of clothes I reckon will fit me again in the future. Usually I’m a hardcore sorter but I don’t think I’ll be next time I sort out my wardrobe. Desperately need to sort out my basics though!

I actually really enjoyed your ramble about your personal style, I think a lot of people can relate to it! I think I've changed my style 10 times 😂 I went from colourful Scandinavian style, to minimal / capsule wardrobe and now my style has been bohemian/romantic for a few years thankfully. I love warm color, pink, ruffles and florals which are more feminine and then I would pair it with overalls or wide leg jeans. I also love fashion from the 70's but I feel that it can be a bit much for day to day. I look forward to seeing your style develop, perhaps you can make another video about it in the future. ❤

i feel like over the coarse of my life, my personal style never changed. it's either jeans and loungewear or dressed up to the 9s with absolutely nothing in between. 😂and when i'm dressed up, it's very feminine and girly but the loungewear is boxy/ unisex. low key, i think knitting sweaters is bridging these two styles. 😌your voice is soothing my brain right now and it's much needed.

Currently working on my first tolsta tee! Can definitley relate to loss of knitting mojo with the heat, and just life in general! Reminding myself I'm not a machine and it's fine to not knit for a while. I' excited to see you Elisabeth blouse - I must have missed that pattern! Also knitted the sweater no.18 around the same time as you, and I lived in it as much as possible!

Ooooh love the Tolsta tee!!!! You’re absolutely right that we’re not machines and it will take the time it takes - and that’s ok! Not going to wear a thick sweater now anyway 🤣 The original blouse was knitted in Cardiff cashmere, absolutely wish I could’ve testknitted that, the dream! Sweater no 18 is a firm favourite, might be my first pattern I’d consider knitting in another colour!

So lovely to have an update of where you're at these days. Thank you. I've been really having a think about my style recently. Over the past year I have really ramped up my knitting - and it's truly my way to relax in an evening. But I also don't want to end up with knitted garments just for the sake of having something to knit. I"m really inspired by the idea of a capsule wardrobe - so that is what I am aiming for - and work on knitted pieces that will suit that - and then also I've started knitting for friends and family! So I am able to indulge my love of knitting but at the same time not ending up with items i don't wear or need in my wardrobe!

Thank you for another lovley episode. I feel most comfortable in leggings or jeans and bigger sweaters. I had my third child two months ago so I also need to knit some cardigans but on top of my list is sweaters from petiteknit. I also hope to find other designer with similar classic design.

I am so glad tp see you again. I do absolutely agree with what you experienced. Now I overthink a lot about what I cast on and if I see myself using it in the future. I think it also for the investment of materials and time. I still adore knitting but I want to also have a wardrobe that I like

Great to see you again, I love everything you make. I’ve only been knitting for a couple of years and mainly knit with dk yarn because 4 ply would take me ages and would be sick of it before I finished the garment. I’m retired so don’t have to make work appropriate things. You are very pretty and seem quite feminine to me in whatever colour or style you choose. I’m obviously a lot older than you and mostly make quite casual looking garments. I’m going to Florida with grandchildren and other family soon so am having a go at knitting with summer yarns and sleeveless tops. Hope you enjoy your time in Denmark and I’m happy to watch your podcasts whichever way you make them. Thank you x

I’ve done a few fingering weight summer tops and it is KILLER 🤣 Though I’d love to knit more garments in it, as it just looks beautiful. But I think I’ll stick to DK for a while. Good luck with summer knits - something I haven’t explored much due to the short and fleeting Scottish summer. A trip to Florida sounds lovely 🥰

I will be 40 next year but I so agree with you regarding the early 2000s coming back so soon :)) low cut jeans, small handbags, mash tops/dresses and chokers are, personally for me, a big "No, thank you" :d

I really like how insightful you about yourself, and that you articulate how you are feeling so well. That Elizabeth blouse looks beautiful.
Have a great time in Denmark. Whenever you podcast again is perfect. I’ll look forward to watching it.
I’m currently knitting the Salty Air tee and the Alice top. I also like to have 2 projects going. Sometimes three, but that often feels like too much pressure. I retired a year or so ago and find that hand-knits every day with more casual pants work for me. I am on the opposite side of life as you are Karoline! I do still struggle a bit with my intended image as I don’t want to look too casual or “comfy”. So I guess wardrobing can be an on-going exercise in reflection and intentionality.

Thank you Heather 🥰 You’re absolutely right about wardrobing being an ongoing thing - I’m sure my style will change as my life changes! Though I’m fairly certain I’ll never be one to wear much white as I’m way too clumsy 🤣

Thank you for a lovely episode! I’m 43, and feel I still don’t have a style. 😂 Or, I do, but it’s ”ordinary”. I would love to get a more personal style, but feel that what looks good on my body is not the style I prefer, so I’m a bit lost. 😅 Also, I stopped dyeing my hair, and it’s now full grey. I love it, but it also makes me question the colors of clothing I wear.
It’s very nice to hear you talking about it!

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  Рік тому +1

Oh I know that feeling too 🫣 It’s so hard when a certain thing is fashionable but just does not suit your body style, have definitely learned that the hard way. Also feel you with hair colour - I find blond can also be a bit hard to pair with things (or just my colouring in general). Especially as I’m getting older and it’s getting darker 🥲

I don’t feel like I have a style. I have never enjoyed clothes shopping and seem to have become more picky as the years pass. One thing I refuse is clothes (tops/sweaters) with words on them. I’m one who wears their clothes until they develop holes or lose their nice look. Same with shoes. I was forced to buy new work shoes when I ended up with plantar fasciitis from a (slightly) split sole and peeling trainer soles…😳
