  • In this video, Overhauled this Transmission maybe 4 years back, got the car back slipping in 3rd gear. I air checked the drum to make sure i can hold pressure for 3rd clutch and found the drum to be cracked. Swap parts to the new drum and air check again to make sure the 3rd clutch can hold pressure and it was good to go. Thanks for watching, Please Subscribe.

It always feels good to discover the root of an issue like this... It goes back together with confidence; I love it when this happens.

You can ALSO see the FLOW to the LEFT of the Check Ball...there is a definite up-flow of darker fluid traveling up on the outside wall. I'm sure there is a leak where he is indicating but I saw a more defined and prominent leakage to the LEFT of the Check Ball and that leak was blowing across the fluid he poured in.
It is easy to see because of the darker fluid flowing up the side of the input drum to the LEFT of the Check Ball.
The Drum had seen better days and for him to over look this is so normal in about any shop...including when I had mine.
HE FOUND IT AND THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT THEN WHEN. At least it didn't get back in the vehicle and have ANOTHER frustrated customer with a preventable come-back.
I give you a full DOUBLE-THUMBS-UP here and I admire you for showing and admitting you missed it the first time...ANY mechanic that tells you he never makes a mistake is a LIAR or just hasn't seen his mistakes come back yet.
It Takes a lot of inner confidence and a Good sense of humility to SHOW for instructional purposes how you missed it...no matter the excuse of being so busy...and how to check and find hidden or unseen cracks or other issues not normally seen by normal and simple visualization in the tear-down.
This is excellent in that it shows how more intricate and detailed a REAL Mechanic works to find and REPAIR any part. A REAL Mechanic takes more than just knowing how to use a wrench...It takes experience and dedication to your trade to repair anything completely and properly for things to last.
Thanks for the example and explanation on how to find the unseen. Great Video...Thanks again.

Yes, i'm glad i found that, i always air check the drum before i disassemble and i forgot so i checked it when it went back together and found the problem, would have lasted just a couple of days. Thanks for watching

Gary thank you for sharing all your expertise and knowledge.
Fighting a similar issue on a Hummer H2 4L60, having the very sloppy 2-3 shift. Unit was re-overhauled and air pressure checked by the rebuilder.
Have you seen the computer internal ground for the shift solenoids continue to be a problem even into later models, as this is a 2003?
I know this issue was mainly on 96-99 earlier 4L60s.
Main concern is the only issue found during 2nd overhaul was severe band wear, which would add evidence to a shift solenoid issue.
Units line pressure looked good while driving, but I did not see the line pressure increase that is supposed to happen on 2-3 up shift.
Again thank you for your insight.

Would this cause a "component" slipping also code?
I have this code still after new torque converter, new pump bushings and a PWM lockout update? 2006 envoy 4l60e. Thanks.
