People acting like cover 2 is the reason for the lack of downfield passing don’t know what they’re talking about.
Cover 3 was used on 34.7% of snaps in 2014, it’s now used on 30.4%.
Cover 2 and 4 were used on 21.4% of snaps in 2014, now they’re used on 28%.
Cover 3 and cover 1 are still called more often than 2 and 4.
The reason downfield passing is so bad is because most qbs in the nfl are bad right now, and offensive line play has declined.
People don’t understand that cover 2’s weakness are corner routes (which are downfield throws), and seam balls (also downfield). So the excuse of “they’re playing cover 2 way more” is not only incorrect, but also not an excuse for the lack of downfield throws.
Offensive coordinators are also babying the qbs by calling tons of Rpo’s, screens, bootlegs, easy air raid underneath concepts like mesh which require very little mental and physical ability for the qb but can lead to tons of yac and high completion % so their numbers drastically overstate how good they are.
Say on average a qb throws 30 times in a game now, with all the short passes i just mentioned the OC’s call, those are gonna take up about 20 of their attempts in a game. So they’re really only being asked to throw downfield about 10 times every week, and then of those 10, about 5 of them are going to be checkdowns and 3 of them are going to be throw aways. So we’re really only seeing about 3 downfield attempts per game most of the time. Think about that. That’s why most qbs are so boring to watch now.
We have to bring back the days of throwing downfield on most of your attempts. Take the training wheels off these guys and throw them into the fire. Yes, completion % will go down, int’s will go up, but it will be far more entertaining and will create far more explosive plays and touchdowns. If your qb can’t thrive as a downfield passer, get rid of him and look for someone who can.

Every position tbh, safety is just the latest glamour position on defense. Couple of years ago it was edge rushers, and mlb before that. It matches the offensive infatuation, the league loves young fast receivers so the reaction is to get better safeties

The long ball usually means a quicker, shorter drive so the offense doesn't have to lose to much stamina
Of course that puts pressure on your Defense to rest up fast and go back out there.

True that, it was the first time since NE 2014 a team dink and dorking through games was still lifting the Lombardi trophy in the end. But it came with lots of help from the 2nd best pass defense respectively a dumb play call... Better dont count on that, it normally doesnt work for 16+ games a season.

Deep ball dying? Gimme a break. Almost all the rules changes of the last 20+ yrs have been soley to encourage it.
You need a high arc on a deep ball, so it drops down over the defender and into the receivers hands. Too low means the ball is coming in too fast, which means the receiver has a much lower margin for error, and it’s easier for the defender to knock it down.
The reason the Chiefs were bad with deep passing is because MVS dropped every single deep target lmao. I swear if he goes anywhere and is suddenly what he was his first year with us I'll be more than a little salty.
I don’t think it’s a new thing that blitzing leaves the defense vulnerable to open receivers downfield who can make a big play and gain lots of yards. I think that’s always been true.

Too many WRs will be thinking about the run after the catch or the hit coming from the Defender BEFORE they catch the ball, and it screws up the play more often than not. Catch the ball FIRST, everything else won't happen if you drop it, or lose it to the Defense.
