I was listen to Elvis this song this album when I was 6 yrs old. Seen him on concert 4 times. Nothing and no one even comes close. Elvis did both at the same time secular and southern gospel. He won a Grammy for one of his gospel albums. I cried then at 6 and still cry today just as much. His back up singer's were a well known gospel quartet called the Jordan Airs.
All the first time he ever heard gospel music was in a black church in the 40s in his neighborhood. Here’s a little fact about Elvis, he actually grew up in a predominantly black neighborhood back in his childhood.

Elvis singing this song is powerful. The story behind the song is even more powerful. Thomas A. Dorsey wrote this song in the early 30s when his young wife died giving birth to their first child. A couple days later his newborn son died also. Distraught and grieving Mr Dorsey cried out to the only one who could heal him, his Precious Lord. Horacio Spafford who wrote “It is Well With My Soul” a powerful song about leaning on God during trials and difficult times.
He did them both at the same time. He won 3 Grammys for his Gospel music. He was very spiritual and wanted to do a Gospel album. RCA said no one will want that. He did his first Gospel album which was a great success. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Bless you. 🕺🏻🕺🏻🎸🎸🎤🎤🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️
Len... ELVIS was born in 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. He grew up there until he was 13 or 14 and then his Father moved the family to Memphis, TN. He was absolutely spectacular and I loved him. I am 64 and at 4 yrs. old my MAMA introduced me to him through a movie of his; "LOVE ME TENDER". Yes, I was very young, but I remember that movie. I remember the sweet young man that was everything that I thought a MAN should look like, sound like, and sing like! He was so wonderful! His voice was what oit of yhis world,
My absolute favorit Elvis gospel song... Truth is, THIS, was the kind of music Elvis himself enjoyed singing - preferably together with the best backup singers ever, "The Stamps", with the super bas-singer J.D. Sumner. After each concert, they would sit and sing religious songs for hours. (Pls, try "Why Me Lord", with Elvis and JD Sumner - if that song doesn't send chills down your spine... ;) )
This is the 1957 recording first released on a "His Hand in Mine" on a 45 rpm EP. I remember having that EP, which also had another one of my favorite Gospel song's by him, "Peace in the Valley". I later also had both these songs on his first Christmas album. The backup singers on this version were The Jordanaires, who were with him until the early seventies, when he started doing the Las Vegas shows. He wanted them to back him in Vegas, but they also did a lot of other backup studio work for other artists and didn't feel they could do those shows and keep up all the studio work, so he hired the Sweet Inspirations as his backup group. After that Elvis hired The Imperials to sing the backups with the Sweet Inspirations. If I remember right, they were only with him a year or two and then he hired JD Sumner and The Stamps to add the male backup voices. The combination of the Sweet Inspirations and The Stamps did his backups until he died. My personal favorite was always the Jordanaires, but thats just my opinion. Of course Elvis always knew how to choose the best available backup singers, so I wouldn't argue with anyone who thinks differently. They were all among the best! One interesting tidbit that many aren't aware of - The Jordanaires provided backup on every Patsy Cline record!
Had this song played at my Mother’s funeral as people walked in front of her casket for their last goodbye. Every time I hear this now, tears starting flowing.🙏🏻❤️
