Thanks Morten. “It’s not about equipment, its about the photos”, absolutely. But, as you say, it doesn’t really matter, its about the photos. Stay with this, it is your magic and for people like me what you do is just so inspiring. Equipment isn’t.

I got an R5 and an RF 800mm for Christmas and I am stunned. My keeper rate skyrocketed in only two days even though I Haven't figured out the best settings yet. The camera finds the focus and lets me focus on composition
Happy New Year to you too. Thank so much for these videos, perfect windows into what really matters in life and a delightful respite from the sad UK situation. You are a mental health tonic of the very best kind.
I never knew the ball head tripod could be used that way! 🤦♀️ Thanks, Morten! I really like your ground sled idea too. The photos are wonderful, I especially love the one of the bird looking up at 13:09! Glad to see you enjoying the Canon gear, several YT channels I watch just started using the R5 and they all seem to be enjoying it too. Have fun out there!
Im a r5 user, you mentioned the reliability of the eye af. I can tell you is struggled a bit in the beginning but now im used to it. Because i dont want to miss any shots if the eye af fails, i have set up TWO AF on Buttons on the back of the Camera. The „Common“ AF button uses the last set AF configuration, just like any other camera. The second Button (right next to the AF on with the little *) always uses Animal Eye AF. So my thumb only needs to move a tiny bit to either use the normal (Last used) AF method or the Animal Eye AF. This way its very fast and you get your shots more reliably.
Thanks a lot for sharing this tip. Actually I have done something similar in case of missing the subject with eye tracking. Another thing is that it is not possible to zoom in to make manual focus when in eye af mode.

Dippers are tricky. I usually have the best result when I sit still in one spot and wait. Perhaps those Danske dippers are different. With regards to the R5, I consider it to be a game changer. I'm far from a gear head but I must say that eye AF is unreal. Not perfect but a significant step ahead of the AF in my 5D IV and 1Dx II. And the large sensor does yield quite a bit of latitude with regards to cropping. Having said that, the skill of the photographer matters more than anything else IMO. Love the content Morten. My experience with the R5 af is that, at least sometimes, it sort of is about the equipment. The R5 focus system has given me a higher number of keepers. Happy New Year.
Yes mate dont be afraid of saying it. With wildlife photography gear matters. People who say it doesn't matter for all photography are just not using their brains. Talked with a friend about this bird. Next day I saw it myself and photographed it on 300mm. That was in Norway as tou mentioned it lives near streams. This winter they are still flowing. Beautiful video again.
Good to see you playing around with an R5. I love mine and I have had it since August 1. There was a bit of a learning curve coming from a traditional dslr system. Look forward to more videos from you.
Perhaps Canon can loan you the RF 600mm f/11 and 800mm f/11? Considering how much telephoto work you do those would be really interesting lenses to see being used in the field capturing wildlife.
I tried out the R5 with the Canon 600mm F/11. Body is superb (am a Nikon shooter for decades now). Lens is not really useful for wildlife. It is the F11 that makes it so unsuitable. Unless you are shooting in really bright light, AF is unusable. Big problem is the deep DOF. So subject isolation is poor. AF speed was quite good, in bright light. Pros: Lightweight, cheap and compact (when locked). Good optics. Cons: F/11 fixed aperture. AF point selection is limited to center area on a R5. Messes up compositional freedom
Seeing you crawl up that infamous tree with all that new gear made my heart skip a beat. Not sure if I would have given it another try after that last encounter. Anyway, glad you did, as allways great pictures! One tip I found really useful with my R6: I configured the "normal" AF-ON button to do "normal" Single Point Back Button AF and the "*" Button to do Eye-Detect AF, so you can switch between these two modes within a blink of an eye, depending on the situation. Keep up the good work!

You don't need a super expensive camera to take beautiful photos, second hand fixed lens super zoom cameras are very cheap and they don't limit your creativity or photo opportunities, only at what ISO/Mpx you can shoot, which doesn't affect how beautiful a photo is. Go out there and have fun!
@@dkt6408 Exactly, I have taken some decent pictures with a Sony 55-210 lens on a A6000 body, and that is not an expensive setup I have a canon, with a 70-200 L lens, and a 50mm prime, but it's heavy to carry around with the 70-200 mounted, so I always end up grabbing the Sony
I hope you like the R5 and R6. It's useful to dedicate a button to switch from Eye detect to focus point AF. with that and the touch to focus, it makes AF so easy and fast.
My advice is to dedicate star button to eye focus, leave back focus button as is, remove af from shutter button, dedicate switching autofocus zones (small point-single point-single point with surrounding small points) to horizontal wheel on top. I do not use touch focus - in my opinion joystick is as fast and precise - you need to configure it to greater sensitivity. Thank you for producing this video, Morten. I gave the calendar you created to my daughter. She likes it very much. I am grateful for the local and international expeditions you share of places I probably will never be able to visit. Best wishes for the New Year.
Hi Morten. I don't know what has already been said in the comments but you always have nice photos regardless of your gear. If I can offer you some advice on maximizing the potential of the animal eye AF it would be to take advantage of the dual back button focus capability. The eye AF with a large AF selection works very well for birds in the open but it sometimes fails on subjects that are on a more complex background or in cover. Having one BB programmed with spot AF to get the focus into the zone before engaging the other button programmed with eye AF works fantastically. It really unlocks the full potential of the animal eye AF for birds in these scenarios. Happy shooting!
Love the video as always! Looks like you're using a single button focus. One nice thing I've found with the R5 is programming multiple back button's for different types of autofocus. I'm using all three buttons in the upper right for back button focus. The middle is always eye detect, the left is always single point, and the right cycles through them with the m-fn button. It's been a really powerful setup for me since all I have to do is move my thumb to override the eye detect when it misses.
Hi Mr Hilmer, Always loved your videos. I recently switched from my Nikon to Canon R5 and also tried the 200-400 1.4X. It was dream lens since 2013! I just feel the built in TC is not as good as I expected when taking stills, since I already got used to my Sigma 500mm f/4. I can't justify the weight-performance balance of this lens for bird photography, since I walked a lot. Now I'm using the rf 100-500, amazing lens, great IQ for the size and weight, and great IS for videos.
Hey Morten, It will be sad to see you move over to Canon... I think people like to watch someone who uses the same brand of cameras and gear so they can follow along or learn something they may not have known about it. But, like you say your gear are tools for you and you need prime performance for your gear. As for me.... I make very simple videos and find frustration about autofocus with my Nikons. It would cost me a fortune to replace my big lenes and gear. But, I I enjoy your videos so much because of the detail you show . So when you make the move... I will still be waiting for the next video. Sayin' hey.... Greg
A great rig that slider. I might have to build one too! Awesome pictures and interesting tips. Welcome to Canon if you decide to switch! Thanks for sharing and wishing you a Happy New Year. Looking forward to your new videos!

You shall try Flexshooter ball head - it’s a ball head with spring built in - no problem with dropping the lens, great for panning - in practice it is a combination of all good thing taken from ball head and gimbal heads. It is like gimbal head but it is a ball head
I use the R5 since last August and it is really nice one. A tip about how to set the autofocus - AF-ON is set on single point of focus without eye-detection while the "*" button is set for eye-detection autofocus so I've the ability to switch super fast for single point to eye detection in tricky situations like between branches that can hide part of the animal. Enjoy the R5 :)
Hello Morten. Thanks for the great video 🙂👍 Do you have instructions for the sled? That would be a very good solution for me to do ground-level recordings. Greetings from Weikersheim, Ralf

As for switching to Canon - if it gives you better results then go for it, although it can be costly switching systems.. Time will tell, but let us know - I quite like the changing the focus point with the thumb. Happy New Year!

I will be going out tomorrow and down here at the the moment there are a lot of Herons and Egrets and I am hoping I can get at least one picture. Best wishes to you and your family for the new year. I really like the sled idea! Exactly for the same reason you mentioned. Photographing shorebirds with a tripod doesn't get you close enough to the ground. I'll gladly borrow your idea and have a chat with my local welder. Take care.
Dippers are not always very shy birds. I've seen them in the centre of Monschau, a small town in Germany. One could watch them for hours even completely diving under water looking for food.
Hi Mortem - great video, i like the combo of field work and your behind the scenes look. The "water Ouzel" was John Muir's favorite bird in his travels throughout the Sierra - I was just re-reading a book "South Of Yosemite - Selective Writings of John Muir" when you published your video. The original article was titled "The Humming-Bird of California Water-Falls" Feb, 1878 and expands on your video. Thanks for sharing your work.
Hi Morten. I my day job I have access to a pipe-bender and a welder. A few years ago, I made a sledge like yours. I got the idea and measurements from your old website “hilmer og koch”. It is a great tool for photographing shorebirds.
Happy New Year Morten! Best wishes for you in 2021! Calendar arrived two weeks ago and I am very happy with it! Photos are amazing, I hung it up on the wall before 2020. over.
Thanks for the tip about the ballhead - I'll be trying that. The Canon R5 which costs $3900 should be compared to Nikon's Z8/9 that's rumored to be coming out.
Interesting to see you use the touch screen as a track pad, Panasonic Lumix has this option also, but I never thought to try it as I’m left eye dominant and figure my nose could affect the focus point.
Happy New year once again Morten. Interesting to hear about the R5.... and happy to know that I do have one of the 50 Ground pods..... hehehe. The dipper pictures are nice I especially liked the one with stretching the neck. Hopefully no Covid restrictions around easter holiday...... then we could have some pictures of it with snow down in the river in mountain. Take care.... se you out there:)

I have an older Nikon D7200 and am about to pull the trigger on a new mirror less system soon. Your final decision to go with the Canon or Nikon system will have a big impact on what I do. Hope it’s Nikon though. 👍👍👍
The manner of which both Nikon and canon are doing business, and making really weird (canon, you’re the prime offender!) feature-decisions, I’d choose neither... Go for a Fuji X camera instead, only challenge right now, is that we still don’t know if their promised 500 mm 5.6 is vaporware or will exist soon-ish. Meanwhile the 100-400 is pretty good, and I’m sure that enthusiast birders. (As myself), are served well with this lens.
Got Inspired from one of your other videos, and went to one of white trothed Dipper spots I have, And saw one Again. It was close to sun set so its low light. But a saw a new thing that i haven't seen before. It was moving lika sinus wave (electric) Dived a bit and up in the air and down again. Never seen that before. Going to keep an eye on the spot to see if can catch that behavior. Thx good video
I went to canon from Nikon for the 1dx3 and now the r5/r6. The af is amazing and was worth losing the 1dx3 benefits. I am selling my r6 though as the r5 is all I use. I love my 200-400 and 600 is ii. Wonderful lenses!! Great to see you trying them Morten!

@morten ... I'm definitely going to try your sled design with PVC tubing... I love the idea
Hi Mr Hilmer,
Always loved your videos.
Morten, Happy New Year and thank you for the time you put in to create and share. All my best from Michigan, US.
Greg
Happy New Year from Oakland, California. Thank you for making these beautiful videos.
i LOVE YOU SIR..... SERIOUSLY....THE WAY YOU DEDICATED YOURSELF TO THE MATURE... COMMENDABLE SERIOUSLY.....
A great rig that slider. I might have to build one too! Awesome pictures and interesting tips. Welcome to Canon if you decide to switch! Thanks for sharing and wishing you a Happy New Year. Looking forward to your new videos!
One of the 3 people on Earth to get hold of an R5. Lucky.
There was one for sale in Orléans, France, yesterday :p
Thank you Morten For all your video's this year i enjoyed learning and watching them Im looking forward to seeing your 2021 video's thanks again God Bless.
Merry Christmas to you and Bjørn and wishing you all the best for the new year! Looking forward to more great videos :)
You shall try Flexshooter ball head - it’s a ball head with spring built in - no problem with dropping the lens, great for panning - in practice it is a combination of all good thing taken from ball head and gimbal heads. It is like gimbal head but it is a ball head
Would love to learn more about audio setup for forest sounds..love channel!!!
Agreed!
@@lucapfephoto agree too!
Thanks for the great video 🙂👍
Do you have instructions for the sled?
That would be a very good solution for me to do ground-level recordings.
Greetings from Weikersheim, Ralf
This is exactly why the R5 is the camera I went for. Amazing stills and video. Inspiring video Morten.
you can set the AF on button to spot focus and set the * to eye tracking, works well
Love the photos you captured of the little bird. So beautiful. I love watching your videos, they're so calming :)
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you as well. I like the little Dipper, and these "on location" videos are really inspiring. Thanks!
Your videos and images will inspire generations. Thank you Morten!
Genius tip on the ball head! How did I not think of that...
Ok so ... I already use my Bento G3 ballhead as you showed 😁; I’m a Canon user with a 100-400 mk ii; canon new cameras are awesome. Wish you an excellent 2021. Thank you. Regards
Your videos are always of such wonderfully high quality Morten, they are obviously made with great care, love and fuelled by passion for your subject. Always a joy to watch and a privilege to get a glimpse into your world - thank you for sharing with us. I wish you a very safe and happy New Year ahead.
Absolutely. As long as you have quality gear, the name on the front doesn't matter.
tough very tough work just for give us an amazing view of birds´s life, thank you so much Morten
Thanks for all the information and entertainment throughout the year. I learned a lot and am hoping to learn more in 2021. As for switching to Canon - if it gives you better results then go for it, although it can be costly switching systems.. Time will tell, but let us know - I quite like the changing the focus point with the thumb. Happy New Year!
Wonderful story and pictures ! Best wishes from Germany !!
Hello Morten, its great to see you trying new tools in your work. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Malaysia.
You are the super star in wild photography
That Little Dipper looks like it knows you are there, but doesn’t sense any danger. That’s good photography!
I like the sound from that mic, and your sled is awesome.
Thanks for another great video Morten, and have a happy and safe New Year.
Is there a site where i can buy your homemade tripod sled? Thanks.
Wich dimensions?
Netherlands 😅
Happy new year Morten, looking forward to more great videos in the coming year. 👍🏻
Mr hilmer i like your way of naration in the every video
Love the Dippers Morten. I've watched them at Clappersgate near the top of Windermere lake over here. Great vid..
Nice video. I didn't know that dippers have white eye-lids. Thanks for sharing.
I used to watch your videos in 1080p but this video I watched in 4K and it's truly amazing and astonishing! Happy new year and everything the best!
Happy New Year Morten. Thanks for your video with the Dipper and your gear presentation. Love that sled.
I have the new Nikon z7II and it is much improved I find over the old one thanks
Such a cute and curious little bird…love watching the wee dipper bob up and down. 🤗. Morten, many thanks and here’s wishing you and yours a wonderful and healthy New Year! Cheers! 🎉🍾✨
Looking forward to 2021. I will be watching your fantastic videos whether you use Nikon, Canon, Olypus, it just doesn’t mater, as you say. I have a Nikon D500 and love it. I just wish I could get as close to the subject as you do. Where I live, bavaria, Germany, there are many areas but also many people out walking which seem to distract me and I feel uncomfortable when they are around. I will be going out tomorrow and down here at the the moment there are a lot of Herons and Egrets and I am hoping I can get at least one picture. Best wishes to you and your family for the new year. Ian
I really like the sled idea! Exactly for the same reason you mentioned. Photographing shorebirds with a tripod doesn't get you close enough to the ground. I'll gladly borrow your idea and have a chat with my local welder. Take care.
happy new year to you and all the best for 2021. thanks for all your posts this year which have been excellent
All of your work and effort is appreciated. You put so much into your video, and it shows!
Photos are amazing, I hung it up on the wall before 2020. over.
thank you for this video. always a pleasure ! happy new year for you Mr hilmer
Thanks for the tip about the ballhead - I'll be trying that. The Canon R5 which costs $3900 should be compared to Nikon's Z8/9 that's rumored to be coming out.
Hello Morten, great to know you 🤗
hopefully one day you visit to west New Guinea region, and you can photograph a lot of wildlife and bird of paradise.
Merry Christmas Morten! Like always, amazing pictures !!!
How do you make money from the pictures you take?
Happy new year to you Mortem, i look forward to your vlogs during 2021
Yes! A new video from Morten Hilmer! Love that you tried out the R5. I currently use a Sony A7III and Sony 200-600mm G lens (great combo). I hope you had a wonderful Christmas Morten! Keep the videos coming👍🏼
@8:08 you can see how happy the bird is because Morten is using Canon. :)
All your videos are the inspiration and motivation of many to want to be like you,
new subscriber.
Dippers hold a breeding territory of about a mile of streamm. Look for places where they poop often or try to find a nest site.
