  • I am back on the protected island to photograph badgers but this time with a different approach. Behind the scenes about how to photograph wildlife in challenging light conditions.
    Location: Protected Island, Denmark
    Day: 7°C (44,6°F)
    Night: 2°C (36°F)
For a little more than a year now, I have been working on this badger project together with a scientist from the Aalborg University in Denmark. We have various purposes with the project but my primary goal is to document the behaviour of these mysterious mammals year around.

    Hello Morten,
I’m Peter from the netherlands. 63 jear old. I admire Your patient and efford to photograph these Badgers. Unfortunaly i am just a hobby photographer who likes to be in nature. I only have the weekends to be in nature because of my work. Hopefully in just 2 jear i can retire my work and be more often in nature just to be in it and maybe make nice pictures. Keep up the good work. Thumbs up.

True dat! But unfortunately many wildlife photographers are only in it for the $. So they will never experience the true meaning of this job. Well, I mean you cannot even consider it as a job but rather your calling.

Your meticulousness inspires to the bone! That seeming absence of laziness. That stubborn soldiering to get it all just right. The quietness. Not in the least: the results. Obviously. World class. Your dog, the cat. I've been binge watching after just having discovered your channel a week or so ago. Also, the absence of morality; you're capable of letting anyone mesmerize freely about the many big topics related to animal life. I love that. I'm feeding off it.

    Great video Morten, as always.
At the moment in the UK, I'm photographing 5 local setts. Last year the one Sett produced 9 cubs. My favourite Sett this year is a new discovery in a secret and private woodland dell with just three cubs. I'm capturing some great photos and footage and the badgers are becoming bolder in the last hour of daylight. I'm editing 2yrs of footage at the moment with lots of close-up cub footage for a mini-doc I'm producing for release later in the year. Being in tune and recording the natural history at home or travelling is my passion, it is the greatest of gifts and I feel sad that others don't experience, in-person the moments as we do. This why it is our work shows a glimpse into these secretive worlds to the less fortunate, the majesty of the natural world is so important to bring to the people in such a troubled world, Nature heals the soul.
If you ever find yourself in the UK and you need a room in a wildlife-addicted house in the middle of badger heaven just drop me a line. You and I are cut from the same cloth, my friend. Here's a still from my footage two days ago instagram.com/p/COKm7SWA4w1/ The best is being saved for my release date

Morten, I think we are all very lucky that you share these videos with us. This particular video had everything I love about your channel - amazing images, in-depth information and a big portion of inspiration. I found your discussion of shooting in low light particularly helpful because it’s a problem I face regularly myself (although only because of bad weather, not because of shooting at nightfall!)
Thanks once again for this and all the videos you’ve shared.

Wonderful video and great comments about photographing in the dark and how the mirrorless cameras now allow that. Had to use some of those same techniques with an adolescent leopard who was practicing attacking a dead baboon in the shelter of the some roots of the dry river bed after sundown last year in Botswana. The "zebras" showing focus really helped.

Great work Morten! Next week, I will finally visit several badger setts over here in The Netherlands. I hope to feature them on my channel soon. I use a ZCAM E2M4, which shoots good video even at ISO 51200 with internal noise reduction (prores 422 HQ). I pair this mft sensor with a Nikkor 300 mm F2.8 and a speed booster. With the 0.71x and 2x crop factors included I obtain an effective 420 mm F2.0. Great value for money. I can shoot video up to half an hour after sunset, when the camera sees more than my own eyes can. An Atomos Shinobi helps me pull focus manually. See you out there :-).

Thank you. Nice to see what went into your photographs. When we watch wonderful documentaries about animals, we just get to admire the result, but rarely is it ever talked about, let alone shown, that often wildlife photographers spend decades working hard just to get that second long perfect shot. That takes a lot of passion and dedication 😊

So thanks again for doing these videos.

Great video Morten. Took my first pictures of badgers last week, what a joy to observe them in real life instead of the night footages I have been getting on my trail cameras. I was shooting at Iso 32000 so images are noisy but I 'm impressed on how the Z6ii handles low light compared to the D500.

Lovely film Morten. I feel your frustration regarding the low light and the fact that the Badgers wont show in the daylight. I've been working on a sett myself and have adopted the use of a continuous lighting set up which has been a revelation. The use of two small LED panels has given me the opportunity to get some great images that otherwise I wouldn't have been able to achieve. This has been a much more acceptable method than the thought of using flash. I have made a short film on my channel highliting the technique.
