But this was no sudden brain fart at the studios of Tudor's designers, this new Black Bay P01 found its form in the pages of history. But are those pages as squeaky clean as Tudor says they are?

When first introduced, I thought the watch was hideous. When I saw one at my ADs, I changed my mind. It is a watch that looks better in person than in a photo.
2019 was seemed optimistic.....until 2020 arrived.
I've never understood the disdain for this watch. I like it, especially if it came on an oyster bracelet.
I always thought the bezel was a MET bezel (Mission Elapsed Timer). So, Navy divers would wear a Sub with dive time bezel for dive time, decompression stops etc but would wear one of these for missions that didn’t include diving / decompression to track how long a mission had been going on...🤷🏻♂️

Great video about a great watch of a great brand. I reckon the 4 o'clock crown positioning is to free the space so you can hold and turn the bezel between your fingers at 9 and 3 o'clock. I also think the strap is a work of art with a rubber/leather combination.

I agree it is just the beginning for Tudor...
When more and more people start buying them because Rolex is getting too expensive, they will realize how great Tudor is. I had to experience a Submariner and Explorer to appreciate Tudor. Great video.
It's not just that they are expensive they don't make enough. If I could get a Daytona for retail from an authorized store I actually might but I'm not gonna spend twice retail for a watch that is still being made. When I realized I can't actually buy a Rolex I stopped caring. I'm looking at Omega now
This 100%. I bought a black bay 58, moved “up” to a sub date both new from AD. After a few months I regretted getting rid of the 58. All I could keep thinking is “I paid over double for this sub” and the quality is near identical, the Tudor movement is superior and the Sub had QC issues. I’ve owned two subs and both had QC issues, but I’ve also had QC issues with Tudor. It happens, but the cost difference is simply insane for what you get with Tudor.
I thought this watch would eventually grow on me but nope, still uglier than sin!

Watch out haters. Not many like this design. It won't be purchased then It'll be most likely discontinued. In 10 years it will be a rare, sought after vintage collectible. Just like the 'Steve McQueen' Explorer II, that useless cave divers sports Rolex. And let's not forget the unloved Paul Newman Daytonas which couldn't be given away in the 1960s, now being the most expensive collected watch in the world. If you had any financial nous, you'd buy 10 of these P-01s and lock 'em up in a bank vault for 30 years as investment for your grandkids

Gary Smith: ◀️◀️ I first saw a Rolex Daytona Cosmograph in the mid 80s and did not like its looks. They seem to have become less and less attractive over the years and are at their least attractive design right about now. I like chronograph watches but *_MUCH_* prefer an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch in 42mm with the plastic Hesalite in 2nd place or the best ever, the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster. Not only the best looking dial, hands and case, the Zenith has a 5Hz movement!
This black bay was a Tudor Submariner prototype. I like to use this bezel as a GMT to keep track of another time zone.

Awesome, I said it right from the start. Best Rolex, Tudor made to date. And bezel that allows you to add or subtract or add hours, to operate outside of a local time zone, can be very useful ended. 🤫
I picked mine up Q3 2019, it’s a handsome unique looking watch and comfortable to wear, I know it’s design is a bit marmite but for those out there who currently doesn’t like it should try it on if they can get a chance to then see if opinion changes.
imho the 4 o'clock crown position come handy when we need to adjust timing with the watches on wrist.

Probably hour markers for gmt function. To use it as a diver multiply the hour by 5 to count down minutes.

I suspect that the bezel in hours is to act as a second time zone. Maybe it was intended as a naval pilot's watch.

I used it for 2 time zones. Rotate the bezel 5 hours, and you have a GMT.

Maybe out of topic but as i see that the painting of numbers on bezel is not pure and the corners of the bezel guard on top side are not well shaped and equal lined🤨
I just brought P01 last week at local AD, the color of luminous is green, why it show blue color in your video ?????
im guessing the 12h bezel is for time zones. the 4h crown on divers are actually a nice feature. they stop it from digging into the wrist if it slides down.

A very odd looking watch breaking from tradition but somehow it hits the spot for me. Each second I look at it I grow more and more fond of it. Pretty cool piece. Thanks for the video. Keep it up!

Regarding locking bezels, once again everyone fails to acknowledge the iconic Glycine Airman (1953) which had a great locking bezel mechanism via a second crown to lock its 24 GMT hour bezel!
Agreed. I have a modern Glycine Airman 18 and the locking mechanism is simple, but effective.
Airman is under appreciated because it's underpriced. People would go gah gah if one of the big boys put their name on it and charged 2-3x.. have a collection of them and prefer them over any Bremont and the likes with their fake aviation history.

I think the watch was constructed for time travelling by the army in the 60’s. Hence the hour markers and the need of only 2 watches, one for now and one for the past.
it’s not as “bad” as it originally looked in press releases. the glass on it looks to ve a bit more rounder (compared to my 41mm) giving a nice visual distortion

Amazing now that you point that out. If it's not for bombers its got something to do with extreme time dilation. But what does the lower bezel rim covering lug do, does it pivot also?
The Bezel in hours =
Missions, be they recon via sea to land, are on average undertaken within 12-24 hours. The bezel is marked this way as a count down to a rendevous point or pick up point.
what frightens me is that I can't find it as ugly as it was when it launched... I fear I will start liking it over time...

Is it not already on leather? Or something meant to look like leather? From what little you see of the strap in this video it appears to be brown with contrasting white stitching meant to look like leather at least?

I love mine. I specifically collect vintage Tool watches, only modern watches I own are an Omega Seamaster 1200 Ploprof SS and a Tudor Black bay P01. It's really a solid watch and very comfortable on the wrist. Only short fall is the strap, Tudor really messed up with the leather rubber combo that is not waterproof and frankly falls apart with regular wear.
You can measure elapsed time on the dial with the normal indices using the top marker to mark where you want to start. Not as easy to read as a normal dive bezel, sure, but you can do two time zones with this, or measure elapsed time... as long as a bezel has a marker at the 12, you can measure elapsed time.. the rest can be blank.
Anyway, great video! I didn't know about the Rolex version.
I disagree with most, i think it looks quite good, as good as other blackbays in my opinion. My main trouble with it is the huge lug to lug which might make it unwearable on most wrists.
It's really not as big as it looks. And the end links are hinged. So it hugs the wrist. Definitely go and see on if you have the chance. Will totally change your mind.

Some love it, some hate it. IMO, it looks great.
It looks way better than similar Seiko divers and people love those.. for some reason. Yet they hate this watch. Weird.
Thank you for the video of P01. Just that something about this piece that intrigues me. I like a little different and somewhat odd at times.
The key to watches like this is NOT to view them as fashionable or prestigious, as they are pure tool watches. That doesn't mean they won't have the same kudos as a submariner for eg, or increase in value in years to come, just look at the Omega Proprof now which commands £6-12k. Just give it time.
Seems to me they wanted a multipurpouse bezel, that could be used for diving, orientation, dual time etc. It lacks the lume pip tho... Locking is needed because being bidirectional it wouldnt be safe for diving without it. The crown at 4 i only is there probably only because it is more ergonomic and comfortable. Just guessing.
Doesn’t really matter if it’s based on a fake. It’s one of the most horrendous looking things I have ever seen.
I saw an Urwerk Wandering Hours in the flesh the other day, the shop keepers were kind enough to let me try it on; good lord was I blown away. There are watches that just, make one feel a certain way. Tudor has certainly brought me a great deal of joy over the years, being my first step into a world that I'm sure will consume me.
love this friggin watch !! when i saw it i fell in love!! the style, lets get real no one really dives so hour markers make sense. and the locking mechanism is genius. my breitling is annoying the bezel keeps moving . i need this watch part of my collection badly!! awesome job tudor!

Two takeaways from this video...
1)The narrator's pronunciation of 'brain fart' made me spit out my coffee (loved it!)
2)The Omega Seamaster PloProf IS a hideous monstrosity, but you almost never hear anyone say anything bad about it, so afte r I flinched at that comment, I found myself agreeing (and I'm an admitted Omega fanboy!).
There are watches that are seen as "Beautiful", or watches seen as "Unique", but this watch is just really, REALLY cool. None of it makes sense, and that's why it makes all the sense in the world to me-- It's just such a unique piece that it shines on its own.. if only it wasn't 4k+ USD retail. That I think is the main reason why it won't sell. It's not the design.. it's the price. You can buy a BB GMT for less, or even a second hand (no pun intended) pelagos for less!

What do you think has more value a Perfect sub mariner copy with ETA an movement, or a "perfect clone" 3135 Chinese movement ?
Can you wear this with a normal strap or is it limited to those weird integrated ones? I could live with the odd crown guards. The face is ace.

I 'm liking this more and more. I love how the lume glows blue. I really want an original vintage snowflake, but those watches are priced out of my range. I don't like the pelagos and the black bays don't seem to be (at least to me) a true descendant of the original - which was a tool watch. This one does - a true diver, a tool watch and so strange - I love it!
Ugly, Ugly, Ugly. I much prefer my Tudors of fifty years back when you got a lower cost movement in an Oyster case.

Could the bezel have to do with Submarines?
It is TOOLWATCH and this is something Rolex lost time ago. The luxury around former toolwatches has made the market look in the oposite way. Tudor are still supplying toolwatches while Rolex fieling waiting lists of mostly snob people to buy luxury items that were concieved as tools.😎
Automatic tool watches died a long time ago. It makes sense that Rolex would go to the "low-end" luxury side of things. Tudor is still part of Rolex (i dont know how much they share their hierarchy) and they are still making awesome tool watches (even though their prices are considered luxury by most people i talk to) therefore Rolex is still making tool watches. They havent forgotten, they just use the other brand name.
Tudor does NOT make “tool watches” lol. Anyone who actually needs a watch for work (whether it’s diving, piloting, etc.) is NOT paying thousands of dollars for one, and they sure as hell wouldn’t choose a mechanical watch when the cheapest quartz watch will do a better job. The closest thing to an actual “tool watch” that exists today is a g shock.

I’m a fellow watch maniac. I have following situation which I would like to consult with you with the question if you know of this being a standard practice or if you’ve heard of this happening elsewhere.
At my ROLEX AD where I purchase my watches already 5 Rolex watches, I was recently asked by the AD for certain steel models I.e. Pepsi and Daytona to pay additional under the table money if I wanted to get them. For the first the “tariff” was 2,000 EUR on top and for the latter it was 5,000 EUR extra to the base price. Well I was stunned as it came from the manager understand owner of the AD directly. Without hesitance he asked me to pay him this amounts if I wanted those watches. I am really outraged that this is happening not on a secondary market or some dealer like you where one actually respects the need for profit, but at the official ROLEX AD.
I know you have huge experience and would appreciate greatly your opinion.
And you ask this to Watchfinder.co.uk? Although I dislike these things from an AD you should have watch at Watchfinders website. Your AD asks 5000 more for a Daytona? Watchfinder ask about £10000 more for a Daytona with ceramic bezel. So I guess you official dealer, although I do not approve these things, is more reasonable than the one you ask this question to. So, wrong persons to ask this question.
MrT Baracus well you’re not fully right. On one side I have my reasons to ask Watchfinder, on the other hand I have enough of this sheet with Rolex waiting lists (even though I’ve never been on one, and have many steel models) and as I said I respect when a dealer asked me this price for ceramic Daytona since obviously there needs to be profit for him. But I don’t respect a fuc*in AD who makes anyway most probably 70% profit on this piece of steel, to try to rip me off by asking me 5,000 EUR under the freakin’ table (“maybe” without Rolex knowing about this). So I will blow this wind until it gets to some Rolex manager to take some measures finally on this nonsense.... :DDDDD sorry man I’m just furious not at you... greetings
If you really read it well you saw I agree with you on your AD. But why be mad at you AD and still ask the Watchfinder for an answer? They put more than 50% on, for instance, a steel and ceramic Daytona. Your and other AD maybe thieves but I know another one called WF. So, yes, go to Rolex and report your AD but do not ask a thief about another thief. They do the same as your AD but than even worse. Check all steel Rolexes, Patek Phillipe Nautilus etc. Not saying they are thieves, just a way to make it clear. You can’t get an honest answer by people that do the same as your AD.
MrT Baracus I believe you don’t understand how dealers like Watchfinder work. They don’t get the watches on their websites from manufactures directly. Hence until this price they are asking gets to what it is, there are most probably many middle men who asked something in between.

I have a BB58 and it's stunning. This thing is hideous. I've seen uglier for sure, but there's no way I'd ever put money on this monstrosity.
Pfwahhh, the amount of dirt on the dial and hands is scary.
I suggest the hours are there instead of minutes for purposes of military synchronisation across vast distances i.e. different time zones obviously nothing new from this angle just a naval twist on a GMT.The locking mechanism is vital once each separate entity in their respective time zones is busy doing what it’s doing before the appointed hour wherein the last thing you want is Your timepiece to stop working for some unforeseen reason , the bezel take a knock an hour or two out of sync coupled with the doubt factor and not execute your mission critical role in the bigger picture at the appointed time. Even if this watch stops there will be a local time reference somewhere else and one will only need glance at the locked bezel to know where you are as regards schedule.

@@Carefreeblues It gets them a ludicrous amount of brand exposure for hardly any outlay. You don't get to be owned by Rolex for nothing. It also generates an amazing amount of free market research for them when people comment on what they do and don't like. Rolex/Tudor will be buying all the online data info on what is said and what websites people visit from cookies. We are almost without exception their marketing department.

Is the hours more aimed at above water navigation? A reliable means of counting voyage hours precisely would be deemed pretty useful for say solo sailors who could trust the watch to be as good as any marine chronometer piece with the essential water proofing when out at sea or in sea squall weather

Maybe not a 'better' conversation starter but a Tornek Rayville 50 Fathoms might be a solid challenger. IMO.
I love Tudor but not gonna lie. My skx even with it's misaligned chapter ring looks 100 times better than this hideous thing.

I wouldn't buy it but then I wouldn't buy a Tudor. But I don't think its ugly, it's just different and for Tudor where all their watches have the same design cues all taken from vintage Rolex it's kind if interesting.
This is such a great strategy to market a watche- a mystery.
P01 carry a triplock crown, smooth as Sub or Deepsea.
