- Tharun from the "Tharun Speaks" channel is one of my students here in the Mechanical Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur. Recently he made a video on his experiences in the Department and he discusses about opportunities and career prospects in this line. Overall his message is positive. But, he made some contentious remarks which I thought I should respond to. So, here is a reaction video.

To be a good engnieer, cracking JEE alone is not sufficient. You have to have some passion for engineering as well. This student completely lacks passion. I studied in IIT Delhi. Professors of IITs are amazing people. They have strong fundamentals. They are up-to-date with the advancements in their technical field. I got completely transformed during my IIT days.
Thank you for the kind comment. After JEE one has to put in a tremendous amount of sustained, dedicated effort to even become worthy of being called a proper engineer much less a good engineer.

One more additional comment - many of the professors I met during my IIT days namely Prof. PMV Subbarao, Prof. SR Kale, Prof. Sangeeta Koli are still my role models. They are geniuses in their respective fields, moreover they are so friendly with their students.

@@Prof_JC sir I have studied a mechanical engineer from tier 3 college due to negligence of my intermediate days only prepared for public and not opted any coaching centres after joining mechanical engineering as passion i understand that is completely shit in tier 3 college so I prepared java and SQL from 2 year 2 sem so that to get a job and at 4rth year I got tcs job but one thing I want to say is studing core branches in tier3 is completely shit no knowledge no placements no proper labs and no technology in education.

Being an engineer myself, during my student days, I felt the same about the courses and it's application in the real world. Due to herd mentality, all the students get the same perception that what we study is not relevant in the industry today. And students don't take the word of the faculty on it even if they say it is important. The best solution to this problem imo is to bring an external Industry working professional and let him take a seminar where he/she can review the syllabus infront of the students and explain its importance with keeping the industry aspects in mind and share it'd application in day to day work in that field with real life example. This will actually make students believe that what they are taught is really useful. And really good video sir.
Very nice video Sir! It's really great to see your insights on matters like these. After graduating in mechanical engineering from one of the IITs, many of my friends joined jobs in different kinds of profiles - core job in big established companies, core job in start-ups, software jobs etc. And as I talk to them regularly, I can clearly say that the theories learnt in B.Techs do help. It's just that if someone works in a very big company, many basic things have already been worked on and therefore, it may feel like we are not utilising the B.Tech courses. But that is true only on a superficial level. It would be very hard to operate specialised software or deal with new situations (for example, if something goes wrong somewhere) if someone has not studied the basics because these basics enable us to think in a logical systematic manner. And in start-ups, the involvements of even the basic concepts of mechanical engineering are much much more because there, many things have to be worked on from scratch. And just to give a balanced perspective (related to the distortion energy point), not directly utilising basic things happens in software jobs too. I know many people working in big software companies and they say that they did not have to implement basic data structures like linked list in the job. But of course again, if the person had not studied linked list and basic data structures and algorithms, I don't think they would be able to do their job properly because those things have enabled the person to be capable of handling the job duties (like the basic skills of debugging codes etc.), similar to the way the basic theories have enabled a mechanical engineer to handle responsibilities in core jobs.

I've never liked one major aspect of education. We're expected to make long term decisions on our career pathway at the age of 17. I am currently 25 and to this day can struggle with my career path irrespective of job. I may be passionate about my field but these passions change, so does our curiousity. It's mind boggling tbh.

Very nice explanation sir!! I am an MTech graduate from IIT KGP from 2013 in EE. I work as Assistant Prof. at a deemed university in Odisha. I would really like to add one thing to this sir!! Core students do very well in software-based jobs or coding jobs. I have seen them sometimes outperform CSE students. That's because of the problem-solving skills which they develop when they go through tough subjects like MECH, EE, etc. Programming skills can be developed in less time but Problem-solving skills cannot be developed at once, they gradually come out of our brain when we train our brain through tough problems. That's why, a Mechanical, EE, ECE student can get into IT/Software any day but the reverse is not true. May be u r not working in the core, but the problem-solving capability u develop through core subjects helps u to excel in IT. This a students need to understand. Thanks!!!!

This is really a comment I needed as a ME student.
If you are not into CSE how can you simply degrade this world changing filed Computer Science. Maybe one can learn coding and programming but it's not all that we learn in computer science from theory of automata, theory of discrete mathematics, architecture of computer, microprocessor, development of operating system, to the series of algorithms and fascinating concepts of computer science....
The coding is just a surface.
I'm currently studying Robotics at CMU, and I felt your video is extremely pertinent specially to students who want to do cutting edge work in interdisciplinary areas. My background is from CS and I recognize the shortcomings of my mathematical know-how when I see my cohort, many of them MechE from various IIT's who have a stronger grip on aspects of kinematics and manipulation. Of course, I have a stronger know-how of other aspects, but the basic foundations are extremely important and should be learnt as early as possible. Mechanics, Linear Algebra, 3D Geometry and Calculus of Variations remains the same no matter what treatment you are exposed to.

As an ME undergrad who want to get into reasearch, your words are quite motivating sir! Going for research in premier institute with a good specialization is not an easy task and doesn't have financial benefits initially and instantly but I think it worth it.

I am not from IIT . I am from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and my domain is also not Mechanical rather I'm from Electronics and Telecommunication and I'm currently doing my M.Tech in Automation and Robotics. I strongly believe one thing that "Mechanical Engineering is the BAAP of all the engineering domains." When I entered the field of engineering after 12th, I didn't have much of a clear idea regarding the various branches. But later on I realized what's the importance of Mechanical engineering. It's like Mechanical gave birth to the field of engineering and it's above all the branches. By the time I realized this it was too late to change my domain. But never mind . I have immense respect for this field of engineering and also towards the people who took this field as their main passion and I strongly protest against the people who shows disrespect towards Mechanical Engineering. And one more thing that I personally believe , people may disagree with me is that engineering is not only about earning money and getting a very handsome salary package rather it's more of creating new things, improving the old things. We engineerings we are the creators of the society, we are not money earning machines. The scientists think and we engineerings, we make it happen in reality.

I just graduated from IIT Bombay and I really hope all IITs get more teachers like you who are open to discussion and polite to the students. I personally have had a few really bad experiences with some professors in my department that completely ruined my experience at the college. Some professors just need to understand that times are changing and they cannot keep teaching in the ways they were taught 40 years ago.
It's like a Teacher is checking answer sheet of students and pointing out his mistakes.

Indian Railways employs lot of mechanical engineers & as an HR Officer with more than three decades of my experience my observation reveals that by educational training & experience persons of this stream are much better in problem solving , much credit also goes to their mentors 👍
@jc Sir, what tharun said explains students' minds. He wasn't wrong except in few scenes he exxagarated maybe to make content attractive. What he said is even common and one can find such videos easily. But the editing skills is over-powered!!!
But what you did is very rare and it actually explains the whole scene. Thank you so much sir. Few things must have enraged you but keeping them apart and explaining the whole thing shows how the professors support the students.

I really thank the prof for this useful insight.
Kudos to both the student and the professor for being honest on their part. The confusions that this student has is almost very common with the students across India irrespective of the course, perhaps this is because our curriculum and courses somewhere undermines the skill building part and providing perspective to the learner and focuses more upon covering huge theories. I often feel that students have a little liberty inside the classroom to ask questions, discuss the utility of the course and understand the philosophy of the course, all they do is to cover the prescribed syllabus, mug up facts and formulas and write the paper to secure good marks. The fact that the professor took the onus of responding to these misunderstanding, clarifying things and putting things into perspective is praiseworthy.

I'm from a govt college, core civil and I've managed to stick it because of how much I'm inclined towards it. There students in my year who aren't sticking to the core at all. But this video and a proper reaction from an experienced professor really helped me. Keep it up love seeing such videos which much more insight into loopholes we as students might make.

i have been preparing for JEE 2022, its really hard for me to study subjects like Organic chemistry, which i know will be of no use to me, so I just left all the Reaction mechanism Part, better not to regret after not being able to solve Questions even after studying 😂.
Still have my Arduino somewhere around my house.

I don't completely agree that rank determines what you get in IITs. My son secured an AIR of 157 in jee advanced 21. With this rank he could have easily got cse in top ranked IITs such as iitm. However, it was his dream to study Mechanical in iitb. As parents we are happy with his choice. We understand that job opportunity in the core branches is less. But is that not known? You need to focus on long term goals instead of short term (easy money). There are ample of opportunities. You just need to be in the right track to grab it. Follow your passion, and opportunities will kiss your feet.
Wow, I really respect him for choosing the stream based on his interest. Most people would have chosen CSE with that kind of rank even if they did not know a thing about computers. But he did the right thing by choosing what he is truly passionate about.

Great move by professor , only can be expected from IITies and other such great institution. Internet boom and what not and not many would disagree that people tend to believe totally what they see and hear more . Now questioning the authenticity of the knowledge and the level of truth in the content you watch have become very important. And the professors coming forward with their opinion is not only balancing the bias but truely inspiring to hear you all .
Dear @jc. I have similar stories and experiences to share as you have in this video. I got into Mechanical Engineering purely by coincidence (due to my JEE rank and my parents’ preference for me to study in Delhi). Though my father taught physics, I didn’t know much about Mechanical but grew to like it by the time i reached the 3rd year at IIT Delhi. My teachers played a key role in mentoring me to pursue a PhD, which really made me excited and passionate about this branch. Now i work in diverse areas all because of the training i received during my formative years at IITD. I have been practising my craft at IITD as a faculty since 2011 and this has been the best journey life could have chosen for me. I remain as excited as ever every single day and would not want to swap my choice for anything else.

As a mechanical engineering graduate I can feel with Tharun.
I was from Tier-2 college and was passionate with mechanical engineering but reality is different.
I feel like my all hard work, time I given for this branch preparing and studying mechanical, trust me it's not worth it unless you don't care about money. But most of us indians are poor and we need lot of money to care about of our family.
If I did even 5% of what I did in CSE than mech,I could have got lot much better package than anyone. (Sorry I am not bragging 😭)
Package increases with time. Be patient. You are thinking too much.

There are many factors and benefits you will get in IT than mechanical, Offcourse unless you are from big mechanical MNC like Eaton, Atlas copco etc
Most of the so called IT jobs are just a high paying clerical Jobs for me, they just know how to use tools, but I doubt they would know or even willing to know how to create them. They are like 'ITI' jobs of CSE, anybody can do it by training just like they train ITI students. Apart from having more money in your account at the end of each month, there is nothing special in these jobs and I respect hardcore mechanical engineers more than these Infosys, TCS or Cognizant so called engineers, if not these companies people who do similar jobs in not so branded companies get 10-25k ( I know them personally). Just imagine what would happen if all study CSE before mechanical engines are invented. You would be walking to your office daily today. So I ask you to respect mechanical and stop overrating IT industry
@@aravind2624 Accept the fact that world is changing. Everything which can be done manually can be done automatically with programming and IT services. You have to be adoptive to the situation. IC engines will be Sooner or later will be replaced but you can't afford to replaced. You have to learn and be adoptive. There was a age for ITI, Mechanical and now it's age for IT, AI, Machine learning, IOT.
I will be glad to do a clerical jobs if it pays me alot and if it let me have a good life. Passion, inventions are secondary for me and for most of people as well. It's cold and harsh world out there. You can't feed yourself with passion.

These type of IT jobs are anyday available and any decent scholar can get in no Matter what is their past is and you can also get into Google once you enter IT industry if you get skills required (these skills doesn't require any schooling nowadays, of course Normal people like us can't do it even if we are given lifetime, so you don't need to regret your decision of not studying CSE in college) but that's not the case for mechanical or civil, innovation in these fields are drastically reduced and we don't even know what inventions we lost. So encourage people studying these fields, if they aren't satisfied like you in terms of pay, there is always IT to save the day just like in your case.

I am not Luke Smith! :) I use a HP laptop like any other layman. The CPU usage jump has something to do with OBS.

One thing off about Tharun's video I felt is that it is much more concerned with job and not joy of learning. I understand its his time to be taking that one seriously but anyone who is yet to make a decision to be a part of this wonderful subject would be scared.
Even I am a freshly graduated guy so might be lacking some real experiences but just to let IIT/NIT/BITS mech guys know, you WILL get a job and a decent one (if you're not slacking off). Just do what interests you and mechanical is bag of balls of different colors, there'd be atleast one of your liking. So in initial years instead of running after DSA, focus on why you came to college for. Explore and Learn.

Spoken like a proper senior guy! Yes, some of the points in the original video were presented in an extremely polarized fashion completely shorn of any nuance. So, I thought I'd bring some balance to the viewpoint.
Other than the tests and assignments, mechanical subjects are quite interesting. It is those tests and assignments which kills the interest. This sem I could not learn the things properly. In the beginning of the semester everything was going fine but suddenly everything became fast and almost everyday I have been busy with with assignments or preparing for the tests. It's like I need to complete the tutorials as quickly as possible before the exam so that I can score good. It would have been better if the sem has been longer

It was expected , I myself a teacher did phd from IIT.i found b.tech students highly one dimensional (hard work, good for job, extremely capable in analytics but poor in curiosity, original thinking) and system in which they are trained; is more like a pressure cooker rather than educational inst. We admire hard work so much that we neglect every other part. IIT SYSTEM survives on high population less seat model. Teachers are more focused on teaching "how, what" but completely misses on "WHY you study certain things".

7:50 Many so called "engg students" have always asked what will I do with a complex concept like that. They have started questioning even Calculus! (As a species, we humans are going south!)
My suggestion to such students is please join a Java coding course after your 10th and leave the engineering to real engineers and scientists.
I chose IIT Kharagpur Mechanical engineering over any other brach this year and after this I'm convinced that my decision was not wrong. Thanks a lot Sir! Looking forward to the beginning of the first semester.

Coming to what needs serious thought in the IIT system is the institute's expectations from an IITian. There can be two schools of thought (or maybe more):
1. Whether the IIT system wants to help a student in learning the subjects seriously and help them smoothly achieve the related professions with ease and strong fundamental knowledge in that subject.
2. Whether students are expected to explore the practicalities and hardships of life after left free and then settling down somewhere in a long run and struggles (not necessarily in engineering).
(Because the IIT system today is way different than that of 10-15 years before)

Seeing an IIT teacher using linux with a window manager as desktop environment is very interesting for me.
Sir I’m from a tier 2 private college whose dream was to study mechanical engineering because my father is a mechanical engineer, he himself could not afford to get a bachelors degree so he started working at 18 with just his diploma and today he’s a the executive vp of his company. He has always told me during my degree that there is large chance that whatever subjects I study may not applicable for the job I do but you have to know them because it all goes in a tandem. Sir I always wanted to teachers like you who care deeply about research but never got one (there are good teachers here but the overall environment is not towards research, even the 3 research interns I did were at institutes like IITB and IISER K, and I realised that students there don’t really recognise what they have. Now as I apply for masters in the US, I hope I’ll be able to do what I have always wanted to do. Great video, I hope this student realises how lucky he is to be at top core program in the country

I think the student is rightfully frustrated for the choices he made, its just that the way he conveys is as expected of someone from his age. The value of mechanical engineering or anything for that matter is worth something to someone only if they have the passion to drive it forward. For example a guy who doesn't understand "Art" cannot learn to respect the value of underlying complex mechanics which makes a great art possible, same holds true for mechanical or any other stuff in life. The underlying problem here is that kids choose these courses to earn money, and they will continue to be frustrated as long as their underlying passion gets dominated by some 60 lpa yielding juicy job market.

One of the things that upsets me about the and makes me mad about the information age is that now you don't really need to truly know or understand things that your speaking about. Someone who breaks a Mech CFL at railway track for symbolism's sake has the same platform and can project the same credibility as someone who has worked in the department for years.

Hello sir. I too had the same emotions when I joined mechanical engineering. And by the end of 4th it did not give me what I wanted, a job. But still I wanted to stick to mechanical, because I didn't have to think much when I'm solving practical mechanical problem. After a year of struggle by joining startups, I got a lot of exposure and could understand a company from a business perspective as well(which college doesn't teach) this boosted my confidence for the best interview i had which eventually led me to a job in Core mechanical company 🙏
Also a secret to clickbait( or to make people in intrested to watch your videos) is that the word 'IIT' itself enough to pull a lot of people.
