Minor suggestion that might help people understand why that interest on their credit cards are bad: Tell them how much time it is costing them to pay their interest. For instance, if she is making $18 per hour and pays $80 a month in interest, that is about 5 hours (after taxes) of work she spends every month just paying off interest on her credit card. 5 hours of her life she does not get back.
@@cottoncandiez8872 5 hours of work for getting nothing in return? I don't believe that sounds good to anyone. It's not even paying off capital, it's literally just interest.
Please tell this woman she has been scammed. The LA City Attorney ruled showcases illegal. No legit agent will sign a non union performer with no credits. She is already in a GREAT market to stack credits with a local southeast agent without competing against every working actor in LA. SMH.
Unfortunately anyone who tries to explain this to her will just be told they are a "hater" and "are just jealous that she's pursuing her dreams". Not to mention she'll be embarrassed she got got and will likely never admit it even when reality slaps her
As a film director, please let her know what many others have pointed out - that the showcase thing is a total scam. What she and her friends should do is get that money together and instead use it to shoot some decent quality stuff for their own acting reels (which they can use to get work and further build up their reels, eventually leading to landing an agent). They can write a bunch of short scripts together of different genres and "types", hire local camera operators and sound recordists to shoot them half-decent and edit them so they can all have something to build up their reels and get some on-set experience. There are even production companies and videographers that offer such a service specifically for acting reels, some will even provide scripts and direction for you! She seems like a really sweet person and wish her the best in her endeavors. Hopefully she sees these comments
I WISH school or whatever would teach this. For all the arts/performance/design/WHATEVER. I WISH I KNEW THIS when I was entering school. Or even someone just told me this in the first semester but nope. ,💀 Just graduated and boy am I lost.
Yup, same with modelling and dance. Like technically everyone has potential lol. They'll take your own regardless of wether or not you will make it 💯 😮
I use UA-cam but schools should also be teaching us this stuff cause some people they graduate high school and don’t know the first thing about finance it’s sad
@S K I think you're missing the point that I was making. Sure, you can seek other options for learning about finances, investments, taxes, etc. The point I'm making is that this should all be taught in primary and secondary curriculum. These things could all be easily integrated into English, mathematics, and social studies.
Choosing to be delusional... Wow. Hate reality, love reality, hell curl into a ball and refuse to participate; but choosing to be delusional is ridiculous.
Yikes! As a performing arts educator, one of the main things I teach my students is that you NEVER pay to attend a “showcase”. And you don’t pay for an agency. You find the legitimate agencies, who never ask for a dime from the talent. They are paid when you are booked. They work to benefit you both. The ones with cattle-call auditions and showcases are scams to sell you expensive and unnecessary “agency fees”, “acting lessons”, “headshot fees”… it’s disgusting. And so very sad how many people are taken advantage of.
Caleb these videos are so important, and I hope you know that. I was raised in a lower income family where car debt was inevitable, credit cards were your emergency savings, and the idea of investing is laughable. Hearing your perspective is helping people break this cycle, or at least it is helping me. KEEP IT UP.
Anything that requires you to pay to showcase yourself for acting or music is a scam. 5 days lodging in LA does not cost 2k. Imagine charging people 2k each to put them up in a shitty hotel for 5 days and have them meet fake agents. You should never have to pay to audition or to perform anything. He didn't comment on the obvious fact that she fell prey to a scam.
I mean Caleb may not be aware of that, not everyone is in the acting sphere and understands that you shouldn't pay to audition, it is reasonable to assume that not all jobs work in the same way and that sometimes you may pay to apply for a job (in the sense you audition over multiple days, pay for room and food and "coaching" whatever) so I could see that not everyone would pick up on it especially if they are from a non-arts family and life experience...
@@esmeecampbell7396 Yeah fair. But I also think most things work this way. It's one thing to make you pay your expenses when you travel for a job interview, but in general you should never pay to work or to apply for a job. If a business you work for requires you to pay to sink money into it before you make anything it's probably an MLM for example.
The worst part is that it’s not even just her. It’s 30 people and they are ALL paying 2K for hotels? Either it’s a massive scam as mentioned, or (maybe even worse) none of them had the thought of getting an airbnb or large hotel rooms to minimise their lodging expenses
I really appreciate the maturity around the 25 minute mark where you checked yourself just bashing her and realized that you'd lose her completely if you didn't reaffirm your intentions and why. I love your videos and you are definitely making a difference in all of these people's lives because you aren't giving up on them. The world needs more Caleb Hammers
Gad I ran across this comment because I was about to write a comment about how rude Caleb was at 21:03. The dream isn't the problem, financing the dream is.
@JohnRayVidz I would disagree. The dream is a problem since it's allowed a predatory group to scam 30 people (at least) out of their money. Being an actor is a fine dream, but to expect that one can support themselves off of it is fantasy?
Caleb I think you need to make an educational video just showing people what a credit card balance is, what it means to carry a balance to a 2nd month, how interest payments are calculated and charged, and the difference between fixed and variable interest. There are so many people who do financial audit with you who don’t have these basic concepts down.
It's incredibly sad, how they laugh and giggle in ignorance at their situation, while Caleb is dying because he actually understands the magnitude of the situation they are in.
What do you want them to do, cry and cut their wrists, Jesus Christ, this isn’t suppose to be Softwhite underbelly…. Plus we’re in America, the school system barely prepped us so it is honestly Laughable. And as someone who got out of a 15k debt after an arrest, you’re suppose to laugh or you’ll want to kill yourself.
Really inspired me to clean up my finances. Slamming my credit cards down! Paid like 4k last month now at 50% utilization bout to be at 20% by the end of this month 🙏 thanks Caleb! Emergency fund next!
These videos make me realize how very close I've gotten to completely boning myself financially a few times in my life. I wish I'd discovered financial sense earlier but I'm glad to be working on it now.
My 52 yr old self was SOOOO happy that my 23 yr old self paid off debt, paid off all cc monthly from then on, and started investing. Business class seats are nice.
My wife and I cleared out all our consumer debt 10 years ago. We owe only on our home and our mortgage is right at 1000 a month. On an average month we clear just over $7400. It’s so nice to be able to pay cash for anything we want and do it comfortably. Had we not cleared out the debt we’d still be paying the banks monies that we now use for life experiences.
I recently came across these videos, and I’m obsessed. I'm 20, and watching these made me realize just how ahead I am. I’m so thankful there are videos out like this that can help teach people about financial literacy.
yea fr same. i spent years saving with a good job while at my parents. never went out, very frugal, rockin a cheap car, and now im out on my own with a big ass savings. only debt i have is my new car which i have 1 year left now. so happy im not incredibly stupid like these people. i dont get it..
@@richyoung4051 im glad you are doing well however no need to put others down in order to try and make yourself feel or look better. people have different time lines, family situations, life circumstances ect. some people were never taught these things, or given the privilege to stay with parents. and yes, some have and managed to be stupid and threw it away but still. maybe you "don't get it" because you've been yes smart but also lucky to be in the situation you were in.
A few years ago my wife got our daughter involved and signed onto a modeling agency as I absolutely hated the idea. She went in to sign the contract and we had to pay $1000 just to sign the contract with the idea that she would make money with some modeling gigs. Nope, that only opened up the door to have to spend thousands of more dollars to take theme cruises catering to modeling agencies costing many more thousands of dollars with zero promises that it would lead to anything. If it did lead to the next step, you guessed it it would cost more money with maybe the opportunity to make some money. Luckily the only money I lost was that initial $1000 as I put a stop to any further nonsense. I can't help but wonder if this acting gig this girl has set up in Los Angeles might be a similar thing.
Yes it’s a never ending cycle of secret fueled narcissism, they set up shop at a shitty table in a mall or something and prey on innocent and fair looking people with low self esteem or narcissistic traits and leech off them in the process of them trying to get a gig and bank rolling off it, it never comes. You made the right choice, use it as a learning experience and show them the rest of the snake oil out there
I was just thinking that there is an endless flow of young girls with unrealistic dreams that agents can take advantage of. Pretty consistent business.
I grew up in LA and had big dreams to become a musician. From the age of 16 I worked so hard and saved up $2000 dollars which is a lot for a teenager at a minimum wage job and got scammed in to paying for “studio time” at this fake recording studio they let me come in and hang out for one day and then they cut all contact with me and the studio moved location. They stole $2000 dollars from a 16 year old. I try to warn people who are so starstruck about the entertainment industry but people will do anything it takes and it’s really sad.

Man I’ve built up some (5k)credit card debt and was stressing a bit when I include 2 car notes and rent. These audits made me realize it ain’t that bad compared to others. I’m paying 2.2k tomorrow to avoid credit interest and my next check covers both cars and it’ll be the last payment for 1 note.
@@BreakingClouds- Yes that's even worse. You make 5600 a month and you've managed to go 5k in debt and you're apparently also not able to pay it off in a month or three. THAT is bad! You have a spending problem and most of your income is apparently tied up. Dont comfort yourself with the fact that there's people out there doing worse.
@@DutchManticore I agree my spending is a problem, it’s something I’m addressing. My debt should be paid off in the next month. And it’s not like I’m happy others are doing worse, I’m more grateful that I realized I have a money problem early on before it got to an extreme case where I’m stressing about a car payment or rent. Right now I’m stressing just looking at that balance because it had never got that bad.
Little suggestion: ask people how much they are paying on their cell phone bill! It's a utility that some people tend to ignore the cost of. Some have scarily high cell phone bills even if they are done paying their phone installments. Example of this being the 22-year old you audited a week ago.
@@user-gk7il3vl5g I don't get how people are paying $100 a month just for their phone. I just buy my unlocked phones outright and use Mint Mobile on them which is like $20 a month.
That trip to LA was a vacation. She wanted an even bigger break from reality with her friends and justified it by saying she’s going to that acting camp
What I love about this interview process is the host feels the fear and pain of the poor financial decisions the guest makes and shows it. He's not just a robot relaying info for info sake. Really hits home
Thank you for your videos Caleb, they inspired me to actually review my finances yesterday. Turns out I had a reoccurring charge to an app I haven't used in over a year. Working it out to get it cancelled.
I only watch these to feel better about my own finances. It’s hard when all I see on social media are young people with exotic cars and this channel brings me a reality check with my situation and what my situation will be in the next 10 years
Just found your site today Caleb. Love it and am watching from Australia. 2 years ago my daughter (now 21) said she wanted to leave home and rent. We said no problem here is a budget estimator tool work out what you need to earn to move out. Her and her best friend sat down and did it together. Both of them worked in a supermarket so had an idea of at least grocery costs and we put our bills in front of them so they could estimate the rest. End result - they both used some colourful language (we tend to do that in Australia) and both are still living at home saving for their first houses. Both of them have paid off their cars, have started investing in stocks, each have 10k in savings (on top of stocks) and seem to have an idea of finances. Now we have to work on our son…
She keeps saying that she’s choosing to give herself time to make mistakes and she’s choosing to be an optimist. When she’s 35 and broke and complaining that she can’t afford rent and the system kept her down I hope someone replays this for her and points out every time she admits that she’s CHOOSING to do these things and it isn’t something that happened to her.
watching this would have saved me so much grief in my 20's! i carried negative balances, maxed out credit cards, and still went out every night to have fun. until it all crashed and i had to consolidate my debts and get on a strict payment schedule. after two YEARS of living close to the bone i got out of that mess, and it was a lesson learned. if anybody in their 20's learned now to get on course, they'd be much better off by the time they get to their 40's and beyond.
Howdy Caleb! Some of these people are so far gone from a financial literacy perspective that I'd love to see you break things down for them. For example, at 37:00 would be a great chance to dive into why people say that and give her a ground up explanation of why she needs to have an emergency fund. By glossing over what she should do, it's completely lost on her why (granted all of your recommendations are lost on her in this video). Even going through a basic dialogue of making sure she understands that financing things doesn't make them cheaper. Help paint the bleak picture of what her life looks like if her .01% moonshot of acting doesn't work out and she builds up more debt.
I actually love this comment, I hope you see this Caleb! Just spending those extra 5-10 minutes explaining how these numbers work to her detriment would be excellent! When you're good at math, it's easier to skip steps when talking about it. For some, they really need that broken down one step at a time. Thanks!
Definitely want to see this person come back, I know a fair couple of folks like her and I hope this can serve as an example! I know everybody says it but you’re providing a super important service to my (23 y/o) generation. I was lucky enough to have personal finance as a required class in school, but after we moved my younger brother didn’t and he’s learned a lot from just watching your videos! That’s said even as someone with some personal finance knowledge you’ve still taught me a lot, keep it up!
I applaud people like Caleb who have the patience to help people like this. At the second or third time of her laughing, I’d have packed the paperwork up, wished her good luck and asked her to leave 🤷🏻♂️
I think you're mixing up wow classic questions with financial "advice" videos. Just logged off of my hunter and this comment confused the fuck out of me - had to triple check what I was listening to
@@aaronlover9814 Weird, that part of the comment is gone and it isn't edited, lol. UA-cam must have had some glitch or something where it was showing some comments from a video I watched previously mixed in with the current video's comments. 🤷♀
You explaining the "total cost" of items purchased with debt really hits home for these people. She also believes (incorrectly) that her looks will land her money or a man to pay for her. The wall is going to hit real hard.
Love the financial audits and the street videos. Ever thought of sprinkling in a few episodes of people who got themselves out of debt and into a more stable or good financial health? I know you will eventually do follow-ups, but most people so far don't seem to be ready to follow advice. Or episodes/series compiled on topics based on responses from people doing well in their finances such as what is the most important thing to focus on in their opinion. What is one thing they wish they'd known sooner...Their biggest regret or hardest obstacle etc. Seeing more of the "if you commit side" vs "starting and having no commitment" as a whole. Idk just food for thought 😊.
Her debt wasn’t the worst we’ve seen, but definitely one of the worst mindsets. All the most financially illiterate people coming from the arts degrees makes sense, they live in an illusion and are surrounded by people that don’t ground them. So being on this show is too much of a shock and they go back to their life surrounded by other people with similar mindsets, and they just go back in to depth
Not all people in Arts degrees are financially illiterate. Some will do the smart thing and pay down their debts post-hast and invest + save. Goes for any career range.
@@shirotagachi1305 Not business degree people. Unless they had someone doing all their course work for them you learn enough to be very aware and proactive of high interest debt
I hope she comes back in a few months with good news! I think it's possible that some of the lessons sinked in, though it might take her longer to do it than recommended. She needs a budget tracking app for sure!
She’s way to relaxed about this. I’ve been in horrible debt before when I was younger. It was mostly for education cost. It terrified me even then. She doesn’t seem to care and is taking an unnecessary trip.
i just discovered this channel a few days ago and can't stop watching. you're keeping me so aware of how i'm behaving with my money. please keep it up caleb!!!
I always say I wish you all can meet some of family members who are struggling in their 50s, 60s and 80s. It’s definitely not a stretch. She has time on her side to make the best financial decisions now but I don’t see that until she changes her mindset.
She doesn’t understand the seriousness of her financial decisions because she’s not in the predicament that forces her to be responsible and self-sufficient.
The best part of each episode is when Caleb’s care and concern reaches a boiling point and he’s not able to form sentences anymore. All that’s coming out is high pitched rambling. My concern is that one day it’s gonna lead to an aneurysm.
When I was her age, I had TWO cc. The minimum payments got out of control for my little pay at the time. I combined the balances (similar to hers), did a debt consolidation and paid it all off. But I was scared and very uncomfortable. Can’t say I didn’t do it again but ya live and LEARN the hard way. I am quite a bit older than her, and it takes time to TRULY learn, but the fact that she’s looking offended at Caleb thinking she might not be responsible enough to use a cc is pretty hilarious. This type of advice should be cherished, welcome and taken the younger, the better!
I don't get mad when I get declined for a cc. I see it as a blessing because if I don't have the money atm then I work on setting money aside to get it. This also forces me to evaluate my wants and needs. I may want something nice but I think about the things that are necessary. She needs to find a good mechanic. Dealerships are horrible unless it's a recall. I had my oil changed for 26.50 after I got the parts myself (full synthetic oil and filter: $41). I would have been charged $100 at the dealership and $80 at my local mechanic (without parts). The dealership would take 2hrs but my local mechanic takes 15-20mins. For cars model year 2020 or older you can get parts cheaper than going to the dealership. $61 is kinda expensive especially if that's a conventional oil change. Also please check your oil dipstick to make sure they actually did the oil change and don't drive with no oil in the engine. I'm in my 30s and still make some mistakes. But, I don't go to the dealership for repair work unless it's a recall, I have 2-3 trusted mechanics, I buy my own parts, I let the mechanics show me what's wrong, if I can't afford something I either let it go or don't get it, I keep my controllable expenses (utilities) down, I monitor gas prices in my area and I grabbed my home after the market collapsed. A couple of things: 1. I'm glad she is 21 and trying to learn these lessons early. 2. I like how respectful Caleb is of her African American studies degree.
I work in film and tv full time and I have to say, it’s so annoying that everyone that comes on thee show wants to be an actor. The picture they have in their minds is them showing up, saying a few fed lines, and getting paid a million dollars. Amazing actors like Denzel Washington don’t just show up and look good. It is a grind, it is an art form, it’s is such a difficult job. Bringing and conveying emotion to a camera is incredibly difficult and none of these people so far have even thought of this.
Is there something like a psychologist that focuses on finances? I feel like it would be really cool to have you interview someone that could bring that type of perspective. It would help make sense of what seem like irrational decisions (food spending!!) & reactions (nervous laughter) for us viewers. I’m loving these interviews, learning a lot about my own spending in the process!
I worked in a warehouse, first as a supervisor, then running the place. I had 240 workers, mostly inner city folks. I helped them when I could. One young lady had a credit score of 464. Nothing I could do to help her, other than to tell her to start paying her bills.
I’m on a credit help group on facebook and my god some of the people(Mostly Female) make insanely bad decisions in credit so many low 500s or lower scores and all they want is to get even more in debt by getting a new car or mortgage which is yikes to me. Especially insane when most of them are in the depths of huge student debt that they don’t plan on paying.

Sure, you can seek other options for learning about finances, investments, taxes, etc. The point I'm making is that this should all be taught in primary and secondary curriculum. These things could all be easily integrated into English, mathematics, and social studies.

This is 100% true.

Caleb I think you need to make an educational video just showing people what a credit card balance is, what it means to carry a balance to a 2nd month, how interest payments are calculated and charged, and the difference between fixed and variable interest. There are so many people who do financial audit with you who don’t have these basic concepts down.
True. If you pay the statement balance doesn’t matter if you carry a small balance, you still don’t pay interest.

You made the right choice, use it as a learning experience and show them the rest of the snake oil out there
My thought exactly. It sounds extremely suspicious.
I was just thinking that there is an endless flow of young girls with unrealistic dreams that agents can take advantage of. Pretty consistent business.
This showcase she keeps talking about is basically a girls trip to LA with some acting on the side.

The odds of her dying in the Walmart floor (as Caleb likes to say 😂) is FAR GREATER than her being successful in acting.
I'm a simple man with simple desires. I see financial audit, I click.
Caleb you handle people so well. Keep doing what you’re doing, man.

It would be great to see someone who did exactly what she did at 21 who is 31 now and have them talk.
Well she is trying to go into a highly difficult field as her career. I think that she has an income issue not a mindset problem.
SAME! I’m 29 now and happy I made my mistakes in my early 20s. I can start my 30s in a better way!

She says her credit card debt isn’t bad. Meanwhile she’s over utilizing it and is paying 25% daily compounding interest! Is this most of America? 🤦🏻♂️
Yes
I’m addicted to watching these!! 😂
Wait a minute, she didn’t know how interest works?!😭 As a financially literate young person (22) it baffles my mind how uneducated some of my peers are on finances.😭😭
She knew. She was passively aggressively turning the tables on Caleb by playing dumb.
100% agree that people make mistakes, especially when they're young... but don't use that fact to justify making a mistake.
I'm not all the way through yet, but man this audit is giving me headaches. Caleb, how do you do it?
Edit: WAIT SHE SAYS HER CREDIT CARD DEBT IS NOT BAD..... Yet she doesn't understand what interest means?!?!?!
This one hurts more because she’s Naija😂
Chima I’ve come across young Nigerian women in the workplace and sometimes there is a cockiness and self-importance- why?
I am sharing this channel to every teenager I know. This is absolutely amazing!
Your content is so refreshing and the adive you're giving is amazing! Your channel is growing fast! Started following when you were between 50-60k last week and now you're at 70K+! You're gonna be big! Stoked I came across your channel as a 21 year old dept free, but no real savings so far. I just finished reading Finacial Freedom by Grant Sabatier and I'm going to start applying these personal finace concepts to my life! Your channel helps so much with that and keeps it entertaining as well.
I have students loans debt and less than $1000 in savings so his channel has me cleaning up my finances lol 😂
I would LOVE to see these of big youtubers
I’m not sure if she mentioned she’s Nigerian, but most likely she got the car paid in cash because Nigerian families encourage no car debt.
That’s smart having car debt basically means you can’t afford the car
100% facts
I thought West African first too! Nigerian I have to check the name. But, agreed she might be the spoiled baby of Nigerian family. Parents have her covered. She’s just paying for her fun. 😂
Love the series! I'm from a low income household in an even lower income country - was used to living extremely frugally and budgeting and rebalancing budgets on a monthly basis but ever since I moved to the UK I started spending more and more. Got caught up in the bull market over the lockdown and lost a lot of money learning how to trade and discovering I'm inclined to take massive risks (Even more silly coming from someone holding a bachelors in Economics and should be more keen with DD and money management). I'm 29 now - with quite a bit of debt to tackle and looking at all of these young people going through the same, albeit with a headstart and some levelheaded advise gives me hope :)
The thing that makes me happiest is that over the last 2 years with similar advice from me to my girlfriend she managed to become debt free, save up and reinvest in her business which will start bringing gains almost immediately and profits within 9-10 months.
Keep up the good work Caleb!
"Reality is relative to each person."
"I choose to be a delusional optimist."
This is the exact problem with our current generation summed up in a nutshell.
“My truth” is another delusional thing they say too
Ngl she has amazing skin I’m jealous
Budding actors don’t need to sign to an agency, they need to sign up for a reality check
Caleb I love your channel. You teach not only the peel sitting in front of you good financial habits, but also us as viewers on smarter ways to have better financial health.
Finally got a notification. Thanks UA-cam.
"most people have some sort of hidden debt but you don't..." Oh btw I am financing a $2,000 trip to LA and haven't accounted for food, uber, other expenses. LOL.
RIGHT
But her skin is absolutely glowing though ✨️
A nissan juke was voted the 2nd worst car of the year on the its release year and the following 2 years. It was one of the 3 top depreciating cars in america for a decade and is still very high up there.
Not to mention its HIDEOUS
