I swear I can FEEL depression in every shaky breath and quiet murmur and it pounds in the area like the base at a concert. THANK YOU for saying none of this matters if she isn’t OK. I tell my nursing students this when they end up in my office failing and depressed and hopeless. Nothing else matters if YOU aren’t ok. Take care of yourself, make sure you are eating, exercising, sleeping, removing stress (like crippling debt) and making an effort daily towards wellness. It’s gonna get better, sister! As a nurse, I’m on the verge of tears just seeing this. My nursing school acted like we weren’t human, we couldn’t miss a damn lecture, and even had a professor question why I had a brain mri scheduled during a class couldn’t I just do it some other time? Like the next slot was 3 weeks out and ALSO during class because I’m either in class or clincials during business hours, what did they want me to do? I was having symptoms of a brain tumor, AND I was already with the disability office and had accommodations. If we weren’t all making A’s it was frowned upon. And no one gave a SHIT about grades once you graduated! As long as you can understand the overall concepts, not memorizing all the medications for this one test and getting a C in class is much better than being overwhelmed and depressed and burnout out. C’s get degrees, and we just gotta pass than NCLEX!
If you school does provide student mental health support, please point them to it- and also tell them if they feel overwhelmed and have access to it through insurance, therapy would have been AMAZING for me back then.
Nursing school taught me to take care of everyone else before myself, results and getting shit done were what mattered, and not one peep how to take care of yourself realistically.

    • @justvibinginouterdarkness
      @justvibinginouterdarkness Рік тому +4

Oh and I went into complete caregiver burnout only 15 months after graduation, probably had symptoms within the first 3 months because the pressure I put on myself and my hospital and floor situation. Had to cut off hip length matted hair, needed $10k of dental work later, and had to quit my full time hospital job which thankfully I could. Now I am paid $47/hr plus benefits, flexible work hours and a great DON doing home infusions. One patient at a time in their home, I keep the same people for years and get to know them.
And I also needed a spinal tap and drain to relieve pressure in my brain after the MRI, I had psuedotumor ceribi or IIH and would have lost my vision eventually if it hadn’t been addressed

With that generous grocery budget in Caleb's budget proposal and little experience in the kitchen, she would be a great candidate for a meal kit subscription. Going "cold turkey" from Uber Eats AND getting straight into weekly menu planning, grocery shopping, and all the steps of cooking could set her up for failure given the major change from quick convenience to lots of labor (mental and physical) and time. Something like Hello Fresh would allow her to ease into the change by first building a habit of cooking without the effort of planning, shopping, and prepping.

I also love to shop, but my compromise is setting aside $20-$40 and going to the thrift store. 99% of the time the items there are better quality than the typical fast fashion brands everyone loves to drop money on. A few suggestions:
    1. Ask if there is anything she can return. If she had Klarna etc in the past month, there might be clothes or other things in the return window. Macys is pretty good with returns. That is instant money back in her account. Even if it is $100 bucks, it’s a start. And maybe it will help with her shopping addiction.
    2. Can she list things to sell? eBay, threadup, etc. $2-300 would be a great start. If she’s a recovering shopping addiction, she likely has lots of clothes, shoes, etc.
    3. Maybe paint more of a detailed vision of what life after debt looks like. Make a budget where her whole paycheck goes to her and tell her how much she can spend on wants in a year. She can buy stuff once she can afford it.

Similar to my situation! I was very depressed for a few years (thanks therapy and meds for helping me turn it around, I’m doing a LOT better now). Food delivery is where nearly all my money was going during that time.
Some things that have really helped me get cooking: cooking and freezing a large batch of protein like shredded chicken or pork, so I can just toss the cooked protein into ramen and heat it up. Frozen veggies too! Making breakfast in bulk, either buying frozen breakfast burritos or making an egg bake at the start of the work week and eating it throughout the week. Eating cold foods too - keeping my fridge full of apples and sandwich materials has made a big difference. For those bad bad days, frozen soups and tv dinners are a lifesaver.
For mental health, I think the key is making eating at home an Easier choice - pre-made foods, while pricey, are still cheaper than takeout. I know it would be even cheaper to make everything from scratch, but a baby step is still a step. I’ve started paying off my CC debt from ordering in all the time and am rebuilding my emergency fund that was being slowly drained to prevent over drafting my checking.
    Rooting for your recovery ❤

The cooking can be so low maintenance and easy. You buy fish or chicken and a marinade. Soak 3 days of servings in the marinade for a night and air fry for like 20mins. One serving goes into each container with a serving of veg. Things like green beans don’t even have to be chopped. Then the veg gets cooked when you microwave it later and you can top with a pat of butter and salt/pepper. The meat cooks itself you get to walk away while it’s happening and the veg obviously cooks while you’re reheating. You don’t have to make the marinade yourself. It’s so fast and easy. Snacks can be string cheese or apples or yoghurts. All require no prep. Cereal and milk for breakfast is easy. So is toast and butter/jam.

If you miss a payment they will take your ass over coals! By the time I got the letter in the mail saying I had missed a payment they had already charged so much in late fees that my $2 had turned into over $50. I paid it off and closed the account that day.

I love this channel so much. Finance issues are so hard and stressful because it’s so personal and you feel SO alone. Watching these people in similar or worse situations than me and thinking, “they can get out of this” makes me feel like I can do it, too. Thanks so much

Yes, lots of people don't learn anything about money from their family, and there's a lot of shame and confusion around debt. It's also not easy to figure out how or where to get help when the banks, CC companies and loan givers are all predatory and part of the problem.

This channel has put the fire under my butt to get things VERY clear and situated with my finances. I've paid off most debt (credit card and make sure that I pay it off EVERY month, car loan) over the last 3 years, but now I'm working on my graduate school student loans. I've been binging on these audits and I feel like I'm learning SO MUCH. Thank you Caleb. I've been sharing your channel with everyone I know!

My heart breaks for this girl. I really hope she is able to get the resources she needs to work through the bigger problem she is compensating for. She knows she needs help which is a huge milestone. I hope she can find a good counselor to walk her through this.

i honestly can really relate to her, i feel like i had very similar habits up until a year or so ago. the weight of this lifestyle is so heavy and overwhelming, and can truly cause you to just panic/freeze and completely block out any thoughts regarding finances. it’s a vicious cycle but i admire her so much for coming on. you’ve got this girl!!!!

She has to be one of the most self aware people I’ve seen on this show. I hope we see a follow up and that she’s doing better.

Despite the failures of all your guests, I can't help but thank you for what you do, Caleb. It makes me sad that so many people are financially illiterate, and that their parents didn't teach them the value of a dollar. But better late than never, and I wish Genesis the best. She can do it. If she gets the help she needs, and sticks to your advice, she can do it!

She said at the 39:00 mark, that she didn’t want to have fun during this and just stay inside and deal with it. I’d recommend not taking this strategy, it’s terrible for mental health and motivation. There are tons of things you can get into or find to do that don’t cost anything, and will keep you active and help pass the time. Go to your local parks, start playing a free/cheap sport locally, join some clubs in your community. Find ways to entertain yourself without spending money, and this will carry over to your future self once you’re out of debt, and help keep better habits.
