Reroute why. Direct bury copper pipe seems likely to corrode

To repair a copper pipe under the concrete requires removal of costly flooring and breaking out the foundation. Once you expose the pipe you will usually find that it is in poor condition. It has been my experience that if you have a copper pipe system it is usually on a manifold system, which means that there are no connections under the foundations, all connections are made in the wall, branching out to various fixtures in the home. The connection in the wall are called manifolds. Remove the pipe that is leaking under the slab from the manifold and cap. The leaking pipe under the slab foundation is now abandoned and a new route overhead can be done. If you have a galvanized steel water system the connections are under the floor and a complete reroute of the system will need to be done. Some earlier copper water systems have brazed connections under the foundation, these also have to be completely replaced. In those cases rerouting can be pretty expensive, so a spot repair under the concrete can be made to get you by, until you can afford the complete reroute. These are case by case.

@@Innovation_plumbing gotcha. We don't typically put water lines under slabs in my area. The water mains may be direct bury but the lines in buildings usually above ground

How did u know were to break foundation to find leak in first place

We have electronic leak detection equipment and a pipe locator. If you have a hot water pipe leaking, the hottest part of the floor is where the leak usually is. use a thermo scope or thermal camera.

Damn, you need to teach your guys to get gentle with the jackhammer. We go little by little instead of trying to go full penetration to avoid damaging pipes

Yeah, we pull back just as the point penetrates, then use pry bars to remove the concrete. we use our hands to dig so we can feel the pipe.
