I mastered it in 3 days (just because i have no life and trained it all day) because of this tutorial. btw my english is bad so don't mind if there are many mistakes
Could you explain a little more about what to do with your tongue? You say to point it at the lip roll spot but where exactly? Should it be against the lips? Some other tutorials have said to keep your tongue out of the way and the lip roll comes just from pulling air into your mouth without your tongue.
Just to clarify. This is the basic lip roll, where you don't use your lungs to make the sound. So if you don't use your lungs, how is the sound made? Your lips can't make the pressure while doing a liproll. Your jaw isn't making the pressure, but you do lower you jaw for pitch control. The answer? It's from your tongue creating the pressure in your mouth. I stated that you point the tip of your tongue towards the liproll side of the mouth. But in reality it's not an over exaggerated tongue placement. Think neutral tongue position then shift toward the liproll side.
(...cont.) the majority of the tutorials out there are teaching two completely different techniques but are calling it the same thing. Fat Tony and Track IX have solid tutorials on the basic lip roll. Most tutorials that try the basics fail in explaining the importance of tongue control when creating the negative pressure in the mouth or worse, tries to say it's the jaw that is moving, which can injure your jaw. Everyone else is trying to teach you how to do the breathing inward liproll, which I explain in other videos that, yes, your tongue is out of the way. I stress learning the basic liproll first because you will have much more control and variations down if you do, albeit it is the hardest to learn. But I promise, once you do, all other variations will be much much easier.
+HUMAN BEATBOX Thanks so much for the thorough response! I've actually started to get the sound! I guess one thing that confused me is it feels like I'm able to inhale into my mouth (and not into my lungs) without using my tongue at all. I can keep my tongue what seems to be motionless and still do lip rolls/inhale into mouth. I have no idea the mechanics of it but I never really thought of it as using the tongue. I can basically point my tongue in any direction and still do a basic (non-breathing) lip roll. Maybe the tongue actually is crucial to it and I have just always misunderstood how the body does it. Just to make sure I'm doing it right, the tongue should not be responsible for any of the actual sound creation right? Just held in a neutral position a few mm away from the lips, not touching them? The fact that it seems I can do it with any tongue position makes me question if I'm doing it right, though the sound does seem very close. Thanks again.
Dino Spumoni thank you for the thorough reply! Love it. Ok. So do the sound in front of the mirror. Your jaw should not be moving much. If you are moving your jaw to create the void in the mouth (the negative pressure) this is not good. Yes, you can do a liproll this way, but in the long run it will hurt your jaw (possible surgery injuries). Using the tongue will create better sound and better control and speed.
Just watch as many lip roll tutorials as you can. That's what I did, and be sure to practice as much as you can. I kept on practicing non stop. I currently still am experimenting with it, because it's not as long as others.

Hi, can i ask you for something? I've taught lip roll since 3 weeks. I have lip postiton and i can make vibration, but my problem is that upper lip doesnt want to vibration with my down lip. Can you give me some advice. What i should do about that?
Mirix54 well first off. If it sounds like a lip roll then you really don't need to worry about this. For one thing, it may not feel or look like your upper lip is vibrating. But as far as lip positioning. This is a bit more specific than this video describes, but your upper lip on your lip roll side should SLIGHTLY be in front of your lower lip. This can be reversed but when it comes to pitch control, upper lip over the other is probably easier.
Hey, how is it I am supposed to use my tongue to create suction? Should I touch the extended lips on the inside surface using my tongue and pull back or should I protrude my tongue through the lips and pull it back, like sticking it out a bit?
Ever pushed water out with your mouth? Your tongue is pushing the water forward and out your lips. Same concept but in reverse (and from the side). Dont stick your tongue out thru your lips.
@@HUMANBEATBOXdotcom Wow, thanks for the quick reply. Been practicing today for a few hours and I think I may have gotten a super tiny part of that sound at times. Gonna keep at it!

Hugo Main open your jaw more. You should be able to stick your finger in your mouth through the liproll side. When I do a lip roll my lips are touching but my teeth are not. - kazu
Tommy 2Late So suction is created when there is a negative pressure. For instance when you make a smack sound with your lips saying "mah" or a kissy sound. So to analysis that sound even further, you are also closing off your lungs; if you tried to make that same popping sound with your throat open, you'd end up breathing. And you start off with little air or space in your mouth by closing your jaw and making your tongue fill in the space in your mouth so when you make the suction, you have a low pressure environment. Sooo... the same concept can be used with the tongue. Instead of you jaw moving to "pop" the negative pressure in your mouth, the tongue is used to make that low pressure in you mouth to a non-pressurized state. Though you are not making popping sounds when doing a lip roll. But yeah. Hope that answered your question :) - Kazu
You do know how to tighten one side and keep the other loose. Think of when you smirk or grin with one side. Or if you pull one cheek with your finger, then try to keep your face in the same position... also, lip rolls all sound like farts.
thanks for the tips! it so annoying, tried so many times but it doesnt sound bassy enough. sounded more like zipper than lip bass. The action of drawing in air to the mouth and loosening your lips is so awkward so hard to coordinate :(

I guess it was unfair to call it a "basic" sound. We mean basic to mean stripped down, not meaning easy. Keep practicing tho. We still believe this will lead to better control and more versatility
Didn't do it it's so hard to do lip roll because I don't know we're the tongue supposed but sometimes when I do lip roll my tongue always covers my lips
For this sound, yes, tongue in the front at the start. This is the NON breathing lip roll. This is how Napom can hum and lip roll at the same time. The breathing in Lip Roll has your tongue in the back (we have that tutorial too). The reason is you need suction. Breathing in lip roll has that from the lungs. But how do you create suction without your lungs?? With your TONGUE!!!! The tongue starts in the front then ends in the back, pulling the air into your mouth.
Still don't understand :( Move jaw to one side, put tongue pointed to side of lip roll (opposite of jaw) use your tongue and upper lip to close gap and create suction? Ahhh I don't know!
The tongue in the front of the mouth where the liproll side is. So slightly off center. The tongue is in the mouth in a way that there is very little air in the mouth, like when you are not talking. Your teeth are apart while your lips are closed. The tip of your tongue should be able to touch your lips where the liproll comes from (a slight left or right side of the face). When you pull your tongue slowly back from this position, you should feel the lips pull with your tongue due to the suction by the tongue. Understand this is a very literal explanation and when you do a liproll, you are not thinking of this. So don't get hung up on the details.
Try one of the other lip roll tutorials on our channel. This one is great because it will teach you fundamentals. But you can learn how to do the others without this one, tbh

keep ur tongue back
For this sound, yes, tongue in the front at the start.
