About the series: An adaptation of Amor Towles’ internationally best-selling novel, A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW follows Count Alexander Rostov, played by Emmy® Award-winning actor Ewan McGregor (Star Wars franchise, Halston, Trainspotting), who, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, finds that his gilded past has placed him on the wrong side of history. Spared immediate execution, he is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room in a grand Moscow hotel and threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside again. As the years pass and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love.

I wonder how many black people there were in the early Soviet Union and in particular if any were employed at the Metropol Hotel?

Of black people with anachronistic haircuts living in Russia in the 1920s, as shown here, there were exactly zero.
But after Stalin came to power and began ramping up industry in the USSR, many Africans and some African Americans went there to train as engineers and work in the factories. The African Americans generally reported receiving better treatment in the USSR than in the USA. There was still racism against black people in Russia, but it mainly only showed itself if black men got Russian girlfriends. It's an interesting and overlooked part of history, and it's sad that shows like this shoehorn in token black characters that give viewers a childish understanding of the world when there are genuine stories about black characters to be told.

I was excited for this, having enjoyed the book. Now I see we have to have ahistorical people of all colour thrown into early revolution Soviet Moscow to meet modern diversity mandates. Colourwashing only works one way apparently. I'll pass and stick to the book.

It depends on if you want to view this as a documentary-style story or a stage play. There's a real debate to be had there about the direction historical cinema is taking.

It takes two to tango. She's an adult, she can make up her own mind.
When ordinary people have romantic drama, nobody notices or cares. When celebrities do, the world notices. But why should we care?
