@@pureevilecho150 it's what they call clones in ultimate. Sometimes the clones are identical and sometimes they aren't (daisy for example is nearly identical)

Update: A little over 1 year later and Aklo, the only person to execute a shine mine in tournament, now got into Smash Summit 11. He's climbing the ranks folks.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. Smash Bros Melee is a game held together with duct tape and dreams. It's quite possibly the least polished 1st party nintendo game ever released and I still love it all the same.
Id say its not held together at all and were playing with broken pieces of a game. But somehow id rather play this than 99% of games.
@@davidbass3178 most of what makes melee great is intentional (airdoging into the ground putting you in a special landing state that keeps your momentum but prevents your from acting for ten frame was intentional, so were shield dropping, l canceling, jump canceling etc)
They obviously could not predict every usage we would make of theses mechanics, but the fact that they even thought of subtle things like forbidden sdi's, and made an engine that holds off so weel despite all the abuse we threw at it, in such a short time is amazing. Melee is far less "broken" than people think
not at all, if you plat melee casually you probably wouldn't notice most if not any bugs, but because the game is played to such a level and it's been out for so many years people have noticed all this things, i think that what you are saying it's like saying that because you can beat ocarina of time in less than 10 minutes the game is broken and it barely holds up and that is not true at all
Remember all this stuff only matters because it's been stripped down nude from a 1500 queen's attire, like Mario 64 but it can be negitive because it's multiplayer.
Super Mario Sunshine was also pretty jank if you know what you were doing.

@@guillaumegalienne6351 See I've played Smash casually since 64 came out, but didn't even hear of a wavedash till around Brawl and didn't decide to get into this part of it until a few months ago. I have plenty of experience casually playing, just not much knowledge of advanced things until fairly recently

Honestly that Shine Mine reflect was one the biggest brain plays i've ever seen. The concept is hella cool.
I think the reason Falcons voice clip plays during the character select menu is because when the developers changed the menu they set everyone’s voice clips to 0 and if the normal number is something like 100 or 1000 they by mistake changed Falcons voice to 1 or any other low number.

I think things like the shine mine are what really have kept this game around as long as it has been. As nice as it can be to have balance patches to correct unintended gameplay mechanics, bugs, and character balancing issues, that Melee has existed in the same state for nearly two decades has allowed countless players to explore the mechanics of the game, knowing that any tricks or techs they find won't be removed. I think as helpful as patching games can be, in some cases they really disrupt the natural evolution of the games meta.

I never quite got why meteor cancelling is a thing. Especially when the “How to Play” video seems to tell you to go for Meteor Smashes for flashy finishes. Which is odd since even the CPU will Meteor cancel when it can.

You’re quickly becoming my fav youtube channel ever. From this consistent upload schedule to always remaining interesting no matter what you’re talking about with melee, it’s just great.
The nipple spike was the first thing I learned about Melee, and got me into the game on a competitive level. Also, Black Falcon skin gang yeet yeet.
I always knew something was different about which color of Falcon you would pick.
I kept trying to tell people that it just felt different and wasn't the same and no one would believe me. You have no idea how good this video feels. Every time I would try and play Pink or Green Falcon, I would fuck up so many little things that I would never mess up as default Falcon.
These videos you've been putting out lately is the best melee content I've ever seen. Please don't stop making videos

I've been having a great time learning about all these melee oddities through your videos. It's actually been a bit of an inspiration for my creative process. I've recently been working on a project where I recreate much of the jank and glitches that Samus has in a Rivals of Aether character, and my main source of inspiration has been your video explaining the Extender Grab.

You made a mistake about the shine mine. a reflectable projectile doesn’t need to be on screen for the shine mine to work. It works regardless
I think the faint Falcon voice clip is a trick of the ear. Notice how the announcer's echo strikes a _very_ similar timbre there.

That shine mine clip was very cool. Frankly, denying Samus's recovery seems like *the* textbook use-case for this technique.

Oh hey, my friend was actually the person to notice the nipple spike and post about it on SWF (as Juce). Since he wasn't very well-known, people initially wrote it off as him or the other Falcon being bad and not knowing how to upB.
I asked him about how he found it and you're right that it was due to the angle. He was working on Falcon's HRC and one of the steps was to "down air as low as possible", but he noticed that the bag would have the wrong angle when hit from the top of Falcon's hitbox. This gave him the idea to try it in matches/training mode and show that it was a true spike.
So Captain Falcon has a down air and a down areola?
The fact this game has so much minor junk that it becomes a huge mass of information you need for competitive, only makes the competitive scene the more interesting
I'm not a Melee player. Honestly, I would say I harboured a dislike for the game in the past, thinking it was just an old broken game that people should move on from. After watching your videos, that opinion has changed drastically. I love your analysis of these interesting elements and can see why this game is so appealing to such a dedicated crowd. I'll likely never play it, but your videos have definitely upped my appreciation for the game, and I find myself watching all of your videos right when you upload. Thanks for the great content!

No offense but I’ve always perceived the hate this game gets as coming from a place of misinformation. “3 viable characters,” “outdated broken mess,” type stuff.
This community just feels too broad and dedicated for someone to have their opinion change so drastically because of one video series. As if you didn’t want to believe any of the fans had justifiable reasons for loving it the way they do.
I could see the community’s prickly nature turning you off from engagement but I never interpreted that as a mark against the game.
Ian White for me, I tried playing it recently after it being constantly lauded as an eternal masterpiece, but I kinda hated it. The biggest problem for me was the lack of a buffer, which just made it feel like half of my inputs were blanked and I needed to mash the next move if I wanted it to come out. It felt super clunky.
Ian White also, when I asked if this was normal i got shat on and told to practice for more than just two days, then I'd get the hang of it. But I don't really want to spend a week just so I can be able to play the game comfortably. That's just too much time just to get started, I'd rather play ultimate or a traditional fighting game.
@@judjudson4399 it's not for everyone. if it did have a buffer, it would ruin the skill of the game and it would be completely broken. in melee there's a constant tradeoff between what you want to do and what you're willing to attempt to execute because of its technical difficulty. If everyone could just run train with buffered shine shenanigans every match would be fox vs fox. sorry that you had a bad experience with redditors or whoever. realistically though, if you can't enjoy a lack of ease-of-access features in favour of precision inputs, melee isn't for you. it's part of the game experience to the core.
Alex Rose I mean that's true, but it felt like things like my jumpsquats were overriding inputs. I don't even think a buffer would make those technical tricks difficult to pull off, and I bet I could learn one. It's that the lack of a buffer made it feel like most of the time my character just wasn't doing what I said to do. The idea of a fast smash game is great to me, but I feel like any other smash game would have the same amount of wacky tiny discoveries if it was followed up by brawl. Most of what people like about melee are mistakes, which to me says that the game isn't that great. The tournament ruleset is a great way of playing, but for example if you could regrab any number of times the game would have a horribly campy metagame and things like that.

Fun fact if you add slots on the character select screen for the male and female wireframes with the M-ex tool both characters have the "Fighting Wire Frames" announcer clip when you select them, but selecting the male wireframe also plays the quiet Captain Falcon voice clip
