  • The Witte Engine Works created their first functional internal combustion engine in 1886 and went on to refine various small engines for agricultural and light industrial use. One of their more popular series of engines is referred to as a hit and miss engine, which typically ran accessories through belt drive. This particular model from the 1920s ran a water pump on an upstate New York farm until the 1970's, which maintained proper water levels for a livestock water trough.
Although Rudolf Diesel is most widely known for his advancement in the ignition-less internal combustion engine, better known as a Diesel engine, he was also the pioneer of the hit and miss engine. These became wildly popular in America as the rural farmer benefitted greatly from a small engine that could provide power for a number of varied tasks. From ice cream churners, to sawmills, water pumps, log splitters, generators and more... these engines helped to democratize industrial and agricultural needs across a remote North American landscape throughout the late 19th and early 20th century.

*Correction* -This is actually a throttle governed engine and not a hit and miss engine. Though very similar they are different. Good eye (and ear!) to one of our viewers for pointing that out!

Many thanks! For you to call this one a beauty, knowing how many you've come across, is quite the compliment. I'll pass that onto the owner!

I like the minimal casting of the base in this design. The engine is bulky yet sleek instead of bulky and a giant immovable block.

I only see one pushrod and the other valve is spring loaded for atmospheric pressure. Doesn't matter, but it is a nice working hit and miss engine! 👍

Why do hit and miss engines make really strong tq at low rpm ? Technical info please

As has been pointed out this is not a hit & miss governed engine. It has a butterfly throttle valve worked from bob weights.
It has an automatic inlet valve which means a very light spring and the valve opens when cylinder pressure is below atmospheric sufficient for atmosphere to overcome the spring, friction in the guide and inertia of heavy valve. The slower the rpm the better filled the cylinder will be. Similarly there is no float in the carburettor, but there is a foot valve on the petrol pipe and a lightly sprung plate closing the air intake. This intake opens by atmospheric pressure being greater than vapour in the inlet tract. Atmospheric pressure on the petrol pushes it up from the tank.
At relatively high speed, for example 1,000 rpm the spring loaded inlet valve hardly has time to open before the compression stroke slams it shut. The air inlet sprung plate has less inertia so behaves better thus ensuring that fuel is always at the needle valve equipped jet. The lower the speed the better the cylinder fills with mixture and the thump is bigger, eventually it will stall because flywheel inertia drops and cannot overcome compression. Before that the tendency is for the whole engine to wrench at its timber baulk deck as it fires.
It is about 840cc, say 4" bore x 4" stroke. Note the magneto, guaranteed just about everything proof "For all time"! It has retard position by small lever for starting.

where to get this engine and how much it cost.

These are historic engines that are bought and sold by enthusiasts. Prices and availability vary greatly. Look for events such as Steam-o-rama in Pennsylvania.

Nice, but this is a throttle governed engine instead of a hit and miss.
