The why's and how's you figure out as you revitalize a box built by someone else, is the icing on the cake when doing a project in respect of the original creator... much more enjoyable than just building another one... justice served, Mr. John! Good Stuff Sir!!!

John, you’re such a show off. “And now I’ll make a leather handle”. 2 seconds later a beautiful master learherworkers piece is presented. Not only that, you kept the box in vintage condition and something that the original builder would be in awe of. Kudos to you.

Nice old box! Everyone in the early and mid 20th century made a box or something like it in wood shop. Now thats all gone, but I remember my dad and his family, they all had boxes and treasure chests etc. As a kid I loved them but could NEVER touch them. Now I have a few of them after they passed. I'm a metal guy so I bought my kids all handmade oak boxes, jewelry chests, toy box, etc. Its important kids have a special place to put things and Ive always encouraged that.

Oh man, I had to rewind because I was doing something else when you said you did a mystery braid and my cheapo PC speakers made it sound like you did a "Mystery Date". LoL. Milton Bradley game of the 60s&70s. Great job on the box, you did some honor to whomever made it. My grandfather apparently used a wooden fruit crate to store his small set of tools and all I know is grandma kept it under the shelves in our basement and if anyone needed a hammer, small saw, screwdriver or egg beater drill, we'd be told to go look in the tool "box". Which is to say that not every box has to have a lid (or one that sounds so cool when you close it). Peace!

    John:
Wanted to leave an 'Atta Boy' for the sensitive and respectful job you did on this box. Your work really gives honor to the original maker!
I'm especially pleased that you were able to preserve the lettering. Unless I miss my guess, the second letter is slightly larger than the other two. If so, this may be the maker's monogram, not just his initials. His first initial would have been "H', his middle initial an 'A', and his last name started with 'D'. It would amazing if someone recognizes their ancestors work!
Thanks for the finer work on this one!

  • @RobertBosworth

Mr. D would be proud. The middle initial in a monogram is the surname if it is larger than the first and third letters.
The box looks great! Mr. D was talented. He would have had to predrill each nail to prevent splitting. If he managed to build the box without predrilled holes then he was really talented.

    Hey Scoutctafter,
Love your channel a buddy of mine introduced me to your channel a few months ago. I love old tools. I've been a woodworker all my life, love making furniture. I'm going to try my hand at tool restoration.
I bought a 1x30 sander at Harbor freight last week thinking I could use it for metal, not so I kept getting small electric shocks when I touched the frame. I was doing Lineman's pliers. Upon further reading the owners manual it specifically says only for wood.
Thought you might want to pass this along to your audience.
    Keep up the great work!

Hi John, very nice job on the box. Love the braiding of the handle. I’ve seen tutorials on this on Weaver Leather videos but haven’t tried it myself. The bluing on the latches was perfect. Gave them a more golden aged look instead a bright shiny appearance that didn’t look appropriate for the age of the box. Old Glory flying proudly reminds me of how TV stations used to sign off at night. Whoops, guess I’m showing my age. Old Timer and proud of it.
    Best Regards,
    John
