Spice Cabinet from 1665! Restoration and repair of this old antique brought back to life

- We find a note hidden on the inside of this small oak spice cupboard. The note gives us some clues as to how old this box might be. We look for similar pieces online and conclude this indeed could be from the time of the Great Plague of London. I take you through the cleaning, repair and restoration process.
"This cabinet was
given to me by
my mother.
When I was 16 years old
1865. It being
given to her when
12 years old 1834
It being her mother
Great Grandmama
in the 1665"

Cabinet Restoration
This is my mum's cabinet. She's delighted with the repair and we're so glad to see it restored. Many many thanks. Katy
Hi Katy - your so welcome, I am really happy it will have a good home
What a lovely heirloom! I hope you add your own note for history.
@@TheCottackWorkshopcan you please tell me what you put on the paper? You said you preserved it.
@@fdort3971 I didn't add anything to the paper, simply left it in place untouched.
@@TheCottackWorkshop thanks
Most people that do restorations want to make the piece new. The age is what makes the piece special. Thank you for not going to those extremes.
Thank you for watching and commenting
Most people mind their own business
All the best furniture restorers have cats.
Ha! And if you have a Bengal, then you might say all the best cats have a furniture restorer!
@@TheCottackWorkshop it's funny you say that...Jay from Flipping Drawers has a bengal too and lives in the UK!
Yes all have cats
It is so refreshing to see that you didn't sand this beautiful little box down to the bare wood and make it look "new" and call that restored! Wonderful job! Bravo! 😊
Thank you very much!
When I seem some of the terrible channels on here with hundreds of thousands of subscribers I am befuddled as to how you have so few. It's a very good channel with some well-considered and skilful restoration. I will do my part and spread the word.
That’s very kind of you, thank you. It’s a slow build and I really appreciate the support!
Wonderful craftsmanship !! Bravo!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤩🤩🤩❤
@thecottackworkshop I will tell you why that is - the camera work is very uncomfortable. I don’t want to be critical, but hopefully it will be taken as constructive because I do think the work is good. Like many people, I watch the woodworking videos to relax, and this made my head hurt. Sorry.
@@jls6nI don’t agree.
Wow! The spice box is super cool, but the care, respect, and knowledge you gave is absolutely awesome. I'm so glad You Tube showed me your channel. I'm a new fan, for sure!
I appreciate that - thank you!
What a beautiful cat.
Toffee the Bengal! Thanks for watching
Amazing that a piece from 1665 is still around today!
Thanks for watching - yes I ageee
What an absolute honor to be trusted with something that old and sentimental. I love the care and respect you showed for a relic such as this! Beautiful piece, beautifully restored! ❤❤
Many thanks much appreciated
This is the first your videos that I've seen, but I'll be following you from now on. It was not only a pleasure to watch; it was also a tutorial, to teach and instruct those of us who are sick of seeing, beautiful wood covered in paint (for profit)! Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship! 👍
Thank you!
Thank you Abigail - much appreciated
I love watching restoration videos. The talent and magic that you can do to restore these is amazing!
Many thanks for watching and commenting
I have one of these, exactly the same layout. I keep sewing stuff in mine 😍
Lovely - thanks for watching and commenting
So cool. Beautiful job
Thank you so much
If this were mine, I probably would use it as a jewelry box.
I think anything that keeps these antique loved and in use is a great idea!
I love to hear you “ talking to yourself” and to let us listen to you working things out and talking us through it. Beautiful job! You’ve just become one of my favourite Chanel’s - along with Thomas Johnson, flipping drawers, AT restoration and Mayfield restoration.
Thank you so much!
Loved this!!❤❤ I want a spice cabinet from 1665 now. Of course I’d keep secrets in mine.
Thank you!
A lot to learn about the work of restoring old items. A sensitive approach. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and commenting
Beautifully restored! The best part was you didn’t strip it down n sanded each piece. You left so much of the patina. You fixed areas that could be fixed n done correctly. I love the new little knobs you put on it. I agree they look more original too. I’ve never seen that style so small.
Katy must be very proud of this piece. I hope it continues to be passed down in each generation n taken care of with much love.
♥️♥️♥️♥️😊👍👍👍👍🌟
Thank you!
I love how respectful he is to the time and experience of the piece
Thank you
Beautiful. I love that the rustic aspects are still such a part of its character.
@@PaullyMiller Thank you!
That is true master craftsmanship.
Very sympathetically restored and ready for another few hundred years.
How many would just have sanded the history away and varnished it in a 21st century façade.
Toffee also seemed to approve … 🐈
Cheers Doug - much appreciated
Great restoration and a wonderful talking cat!
Thank you
Great to see a respectful restoration. New subscriber from Spain 😊
Thank you!
I found you somehow and amazing work. I like how you maintain the originality and leave the patinas of the years. I watch a person that has a cat just like you but his is a kitten.
Many thanks for watching
I love to watch craftsman hands as they work on restorations. Their knowledge and care is so obvious in their fluid , careful movements.
Baumgarten Art Restorations also has some fascinating videos that show the attention to detail that it takes to repair the wear and tear of time on beautiful pieces.
Lovely work, thank you.
That is so kind - thank you!
I love that little kitty! ❤. So very beautiful 😍
Thank you! 😊
Your cat said that those pulls need to be removed. He’s a cutie! Well Done Restoration. Gentle, respectful and understanding the history of the piece requires that the flaws must be preserved too.
Thank you - you are of course right. Toffee (the Bengal cat)
You’ve done a fantastic job of restoring this, it looks beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!
Damn, that's gorgeous! Phenomenal work!
Thank you
This was fantastic!
Thank you!
Good looking cat and awesome work! Thanks for the viedo.
Thank you too!
Absolutely beautiful and you did an excellent job in restoring it. This could be a museum piece. Great piece of history. I enjoyed the video. Thank you.

Beautiful work on this piece

Subscribed! Fabulous restoration done with the utmost care. Your quality control assistant seems very knowledgeable and has the most gorgeous eyes.
Thank you! Much appreciated. Toffee is an asset for sure!
Hello from Texas, USA.
Wonderful job. Such care taken on preserving the history of the piece.
I'm watching you on T.V. while creating future heirloom quilts on my 1910 Singer Lotus treadle machine. It sews beautifully but the cabinet needs help. The top looks terrible but I can live with that for now.
It was manufactured in Scotland, so it's been on quite a journey.
Fantastic to hear - have you seen my Singer restorations? I'm guessing so. They are wonderful to work with and I'm so glad you are getting use out of one now.
First time visiting your channel, and now I’m hooked! Beautiful restoration. Will share with my family. I gave my sister an antique spice box a few years ago and she loves it. She will love your channel.
Many thanks - much appreciated
That was a job very nicely and very respectfully done for the originality of the piece. Kudos!
Thank you very much!
This was so interesting. I loved seeing your conservative approach with this piece. You stabilized and cleaned it while respecting it's age and patina. Subscribed!
Thank you so much!
Lovely work! Lovely finished result!
Thank you!
Good job!
Thank you
A big thanks from Co Clare, Ireland ☘️ Such a pleasure!
Thank you too!
Such an interesting restoration to watch. All the thought and planning you put into this spice box, its history, fascinating! Thank you for sharing this I was thoroughly invested in you completing the project and not destroying the patina. Really wonderful video and wonderful restoration!
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you
Beautiful restoration! Even just cleaning it at the beginning made a huge difference. Can't wait to see more from your channel!
Thanks so much! 😊
VERY, VERY PRETTY.
Thank you!
That is a lovely old piece Bruce and you've done a wonderful job of restoration on it. Brought back to life without loosing any of its previous past. Good call on the drawer pulls. I can imagine that the owner was very pleased with the result. Toffee seemed to think that you'd done a good job too! Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for watching, I wasn’t sure about 40 minutes but there was so much packed in to that little box. Thanks again!
@@TheCottackWorkshop I can watch for 40 minutes when it is a quality video.
That piece would be right at home in some of the preserved houses in my backyard, Newport, RI. My mothers forebears (Laughton / Lawton) came here with a grant from Chuck I, circa 1638. A great correct restoration. Narragansett Bay
Thanks for sharing and for watching
Great job! Beautiful and still true to origins!
Thank you very much
I appreciate your approach to this restoration! 😊❤
Thank you much appreciated
I really like that spice box. Beautiful job.

Great job on the clean up. The drawer pulls are perfect.
Thank you, I agree
This is wonderful

1666 was the outbreak of plague in England in the reign of Charles II. It was also the date of the Great Fire of London. The things that Spice Box has seen!
Incredible - and hopefully many more year of history to go!
This is the first time I’ve seen a spice cabinet, know they must have been existing, the only one near is it the apothecary box. Thanks for sharing such a unique piece
Thanks for watching
I e only seen similar as a box for relics etc in churches.
Absolutely fascinating to watch this respectful restoration. I'm a spice blender and would love a cabinet llike this. Currently my spice box is a silky oak sideboard though, and full to bulging 😂😂
Very glad you enjoyed it! It has been fascinating to learn about how important and valuable spice storage has been over the years
What a lovely restoration!
Thank you!
Good job. Split pin pulleys would probably have been the most appropriate handles for the drawers. Thanks to your work the beautiful Spice Box has gained another 369 years of life. Thanks for sharing the step-by-step restoration process. I'm looking forward to enjoying your videos. Cheers
What a lovely comment - thank you so much
So, so beautiful! I really appreciate the thoughtful and gentle restoration!

Superb result, fascinating to follow the process 👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!

Beautifully done. I would have kept with the dark green drawer liners. Your attention to detail and respectful restoration is very admirable.
Hard to believe that spices were once SO EXPENSIVE that they had to be kept under lock and key! I loved this video today! Thank you ✨️
Stunning transformation!😍
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful!!!!
Thank you!
Very nice work
Thank you!
Looking at the cleaned box with the drawers in, I imagine there used to be loop type drawer pulls. Quite charming.
You can also see dark rings in the patina of the drawer face suggesting at some point iron pulls?
A thing of great beauty, well done you and Toff { I think that's what you called the cat] with the beautiful eyes.
Thank you! Yes she is a Bengal, her name is Toffee and sometimes that is shortened to Toff 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting
Jiminy Crickets, this is amazing!

Thank you!
Beautiful restore❤ love kitty
Thank you - Toffee the Bengal
Great job. 👍
Thank you!
Watching and in the back of my mind I thought the pulls were going to be the major problem! With the video, I could see the shadows of the old ring pulls. Nice job.
Nice! I really was expecting the door to close at least …seeing the shadows of the old pull rings convinced me to change. Another reason not to sand everything off and keep the history! Thanks for watching
This reminds me (kind of) of an old apothecary case. Similar concept. Nice to see!!
Thank you for watching and commenting
This isn't a "spice rack", it is a "spice safe" since it is boxy and locks. Looks intriguing.
You are of course correct - protecting very rare and expensive items
Lovely.
Thank you
stunning
Thank you
That's really beautiful. Very useful tips. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
