Li Dayin Has A Big Problem

- Li Dayin has a problem. Despite being a world champion and world record holder in weightlifting (-81kg) he is struggling to make it to the Olympics. To qualify, Li Dayin needs to gain around 8kg in bodyweight to fill out the 89kg category. Li Dayin already has a lot of muscle mass and can't gain any more. He has very low body fat percentage and so if he gains weight it will probably all be fat. So what should he do?

@@Wisey_83 ill. How do you know he "wants it" are you giving it to him?? 🤮
People are missing the point that when he goes up, he goes against people who are simply bigger and more naturally suited to the weight class. Like Om Yun Chol at 56 being one of the greatest of all time, then not being able to medal at 61. His total stayed at about his average, and was up against 62s who snatch 10 kilos more and they only had to cut an extra kilo down to 61 and kept basically their strength. Like Seb said in the video, Li will be up against guys who C&J 10+kg more and he won't make up that much by being comfortably soft and not having to cut at all to make 89.
This actually explains a question I had, I was "so what? Just lift and eat more" but you're kinda explaining a maxed out normal curve: at a point of perfection a weight-lifter really is tied to a very particular weight, up or down falls off the perfect point: doesn't have to be much just enough to put you behind the competition.
The problem with him is that he is very short 170 cm and 81 kg at sub 10% bodyfat is fkn huge for his frame.
What he needs to do is cut some of the anabolics that sustain his muscles with proper training, that i am sure chinese have ,he will keep his strength.
@@Admlostinwow that's not correct. He's about 5'10 (not the outdated 5'8) which is 177cm. His wikipedia page has his updated height. 177 is extremely tall for 81kg.

Of course for non-weightlifters 177 and 81 is normal but that's irrelevant

It's a crime that the Olympics only has 5 categories for 2024. There were 7 in 2020 and even that didn't seem right, as the gap from 81 to 96 was huge.
I agree, but for reference:
In Tokyo 2021 there was
a 8kg gap from 73 to 81,
a 15kg gap from 81 to 96,
a 13kg gap from 96 to 109.
In Paris 2024 it will increase to
a 16kg gap from 73 to 89,
a 13kg gap from 89 to 102.
The massive gaps between weight classes have not increased much, but we get to watch 2 fewer sessions! 😡
And most likely there won’t be any categories at all in 2028
Yeah, it's on the IWF for not adhering to the IOC's conditions. And so everyone in the sport gets hurt.
@@Lorneehax37 I have a question. I'm new to lifting but I weigh 108KG I can lose some more fat but still 102kg is kinda a stretch for me(I was lean some time ago and I didn't feel good at all). Is 102kg a cap or the start of unlimited class?
@@bigbadlara5304 there’s still -109kg before superheavy +109kg. But only for Paris 2024 -109 is not a weight class.
I dont weight lift, have only powerlifted but I find your videos very well done and riveting.
I am a huge fan of olympic wrestling and it has the same problem; "non-olympic" years there are 10 weight classes and then olympic years there are only 6.
It sucks because world champions/top contenders at the "non-olympic" weights move up/down from their best weight even in non olympic years just for the shot at the olympics instead of competing for world titles. There is nothing more special about 74kg (olympic) vs 79kg(world) but their titles are viewed very differently bc the IOC made it so, which I find to be a shame. IMO a world champion is a world champion period and should be respected as such.
Not sure it will get rectified anytime soon in either sport but im glad you made a video highlighting an amazing athlete that might not get his due bc of the weight categories.
I respectfully disagree. Li Dayin at 81kg is basically after he loses water. Normally he weighs like 86kg or 87kg in training. If you have a look at his training videos then his physique is even more mind-boggling. It’s actually Lu who couldn’t get more muscle mass. After Li arrived in Colombia my first impression was like “dude got smaller.” I wouldn’t worry about his bw but his ability to get the strength required for 89kg.
Agreed. I don’t know what he weighs in at competitions but if it’s even close to 81kg then likely he had to cut some water, which is always more or less detrimental to performance. Also the likelihood that he is at his peak performance at sub-10% BF is real low. The results should be higher, they just won’t be what you would expect from moving up 8kg in a situation where one outgrows the lighter category.
yes but following that analogy he should be 89 after losing water, so should be well over 95 kg in training.
@@zsoca31doesn’t need to. It’s not a bodybuilding competition. Performance is what matters so holding some water is good. Tian Tao and Karlos Nasar are just above 90kg-ish in training. Li is the type of guy who has to cut a lot before competitions if he stays at 81kg.
Lu's traps stole all the available muscle lmao
In weightlifting, weigh-ins are only 2 hours before competition so competitors cannot cut much water. Only about 1~2kg at most. Weightlifters do not and cannot cut much water, I'd be surprised if Li Dayin was heavier than about 83~84kg in the offseason
When I was a very lean 63 I was strong. When the weigh classes changed, I went up to 67.5 very fast. I didn't gain that much muscle but I was still stronger, simply because of a calorie surplus and being able to recover better because of it. It's not just the muscle mass that makes a difference, its the sum total of having more everything at your disposal. I think he will do well at 89. His c&j will go up.
Exactly, and actually packing more fat helps in stabilizing joints and being able to take on even more muslce. Li Dayin just looks ripped and dry, but looks are deceiving and in no way an indication of your absolute muscle mass number; there is no way around eating more to gain more.
The old Soviet teams did studies on this
Comparing 2 weightlifters with equal strength numbers and similar technical skills, the heavier one will lift more even if all other parameters are equal
I.e. mass moves mass
@@phliuy so basically F = ma, right? I mean, a gain in mass both fat and muscle would lead to an increase in the total force. I assume he would require a change on his diet and probably more body building.
Better technique in the clean will help him, if he can time his cleans even better, as supposed to a high deadlift he does, followed by sinking in the clean then he should be able to jerk anything afterwards
@@waxwingvain ive never heard of that idea (not saying it isn't true, just never encountered it), but that would explain why i had random knee and wrist injuries out of nowhere recently. i lost 30lb since august, and i can safely assume it was mostly fat because my lifts have all gone UP or stayed the same. it really boggled my mind because i wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary while training, but i figured being in a catabolic state might have something to do with it
This is the situation where being closer to bodybuilding helps to understand the options. Li is not only clearly sub 10% bodyfat, he even looks almost dehydrated to a certain degree. Which means, that he only would have to gain maybe 2 or 3 kg of pure muscles, maybe the same amount stored in fat and the remaining couple of kilos as water. And he would still look like a bodybuilder couple weeks short of getting on stage. He should have more strength and his joints should be better as well!
What do you think about the possible decrease in mobility, balance and endurance? Would it significantly affect his performance?
@@showmaesas I'm no expert on this matter, but his body looks like it wants to be 5-6 kilos heavier right now. This kind of condition usually means severe calorie deficit. There's a good reason why weightlifters never train to make the chest bigger, but I dont think Li would loose that much mobility if he lets his body grow and returns to a more human bodyfat percentage.
Imagine Olympic medalists training for tht
Lot less impressive
I was thinking the same thing. He needs to come up to America to bulk up. The thinking is just different in America and how you go about gaining that weight.
It’s insane that he looks like a bodybuilder without even training like one. Physique is optional for an athlete like him but he looks better than most ppl who live the bodybuilding lifestyle
To be fair, he does train like a body builder. Some body builders have had success over the years even only working out a couple of times a week. It all boils down to genetics and your body's natural blueprint. Some people can do only compound movements and all of their arms, legs, and secondary muscles all still grow fine that. Others have to focus on isolation to get any growth. Body buildings lifting aspect is just moving weights in a structured format based on your individual needs. His problem is a common one tho. Hardest part of body building is eating - not training. 🤣 He doesn't eat like a body builder , seems like. Lol

You know what, I have high hopes for him. Despite the fact that it appears that he’s hitting his genetic ceiling he still pushes forward and I respect that
He might be an exception to the rule, most people can't truly give their 100% at a bodyfat level under 10%, so if he gains mostly fat, increasing to 15-16%, and maybe gaining just a little bit of muscle, he could qualify on the lower end for the 89 category and be at his 100%. But isnt that kind of sad that weight lifting relies on the results that bodybuilding, a totally seperate sport, brings for its popularity ? Its well known that the members of the Chinese Team engage in bodybuilding as a hobby on the side of their weight lifting regimen, and this is why they all look as aesthetic as they do, not primarily because of weight lifting.
It seems to me that a lot of weight lifters want to be bodybuilders but are in denial about it. A performance focused sport will bring you performance, an aesthetics focused sport will bring you aesthetics. You CAN have your cake and eat it too like the Chinese Weight Lifting Team, but only if you engage in both disciplines respectively. This however comes at the cost of having to ration your physical resources, making your training in each discipline less effective.

having a higher fat level say around 15% definitely does help with power so it's still possible for LDY to go up in weight and be competitive imo
It's not that simple
it's not that simple and the correlation is not direct, but it's true nevertheless, so I also disagree on this one with Seb. There is a reason why superheavies don't mind that belly - Alekseev? Lasha seems to be doing fine with it too. But it does add a difference in the way they lift the bar so they need to get used to the new way of mass distribution and the way it affects the technique.
@@joelcowan2568 it actually kind of is. I'm not fully clear on the mechanisms but yeah, putting on just fat alone, without any increases in muscle does still increase strength (though nowhere near as much of a difference if it were muscle) even though fat is not actively participating in moving the weight, it does play a supporting role in the body that facilitates the extra energy needed. That's also why you tend to get weaker on a cutting phase even if you don't lose any muscle. Not sure if it's physiological or an adaptation of the nervous system, but the more scarce your energy stores are, the weaker you will become, and the more ample energy becomes the fewer limitations there are on your strength potential.

There are weight categories for a reason, you can try fit in an other categorie but it might end up costly for your career but it also offers him a new challenge he might need for motivation.
It's not impossible to do but it isn't going to be easy. Especially if you want to keep the 10% BF. He would have to prep like Eddy Hall did when he was attempting to deadlift 500kg. Basically double down on the diet and PEDs. It's possible but definitely not sustainable.
This is the exact amount of muscle that looks good and doesn't make you look like a meat head. He doesn't actually look overly huge at all. He looks fit. I'd take this any day over something like the size of Kali Muscle.
Your comparing an Olympic lifter to a bodybuilder. Totally different
We have different definitions of meathead. Li looks like a meathead, Kali looks stupid.
Mass moves mass also applies to the amount of energy/strength gained from excess calories and fat storage. I took a week off from the gym for Christmas, gained roughly 4kg, and my Bench increased by 9kg. Of course, bench isn't an Olympic lift but having a heavier body mass wouldn't affect bench like the example of a sled used.
If you're into benching for weight, bench once a week and go heavy once a month unless you're on gear then just go crazy lol
I mean its not like you gained 4kgs of fat. And id place my life savings on more than 90% of the gain you saw on your bench was just due to recovering, resting and eating for a week. Then coming back and doing a relatively simple exercise in a more recovered state.
It's also about energy transfer. You cant hammer a hammer with a stick but you can hammer a stick with a hammer, It's because of the mass of the hammer and its ability to transfer energy. Similarly someone heavier can transfer more energy into a barbell on a bench or a snatch.
Honestly, even though it will be difficult for him to gain much muscle I still think he'll perform better at the 89kg class. Usually being as lean as he is isn't necessarily ideal for performance. Of course, it's hard to know if he'll gain enough on his lifts to be a champion in the heavier class.
Never had that problem unfortunately.
Li bw was around 87 during off season when he was a 81 … 87 shredded!

That sucks that he is now in no-mans land in the Weightlifting categories while at peak physical condition. There shouldnt be such a huge jump in weight categories because this leads to others being severely advantaged/disadvantaged.
I disagree with the "mass moves mass" point you made here just based off the semantics of it. I would be interested to hear from a lifter with extra weight on them that ISN'T muscle mass (Lasha, for example) and hear why they don't lose the excess weight if it potentially serves no purpose to their strength since it isn't muscle mass.
Honor and glory to such men.
Sick video man!
This guy has some of the most symmetrical ab genetics I think I’ve ever seen, looks sick.
Thanks for clearing up muscle mass moves mass. I used to be heavier yet strength has not been changed much from lighter to heavier. It left me confused.
and i've experienced something else. Lift involved was bench and i felt big strength difference going from 11-12% bf to 15-16%. Also have experienced a lot more plateaus at lower bf % while at 15-16% plateaus were almost nonexistant, strength just kept going up...(until i got injured xD)
Overall, i feel like going from pretty lean to having a nice layer of fat makes for a noticeable strength increase. Probably going from 10% to 15% is a way bigger difference than going from 15% to 20% tho. There is just something about not having a lot of fat. It just leaves you with less...of something...

I believe that the weight he will gain will mostly be fat but I think that as long as he gains the weight and makes tweaks to account for his higher mass he can definitely compete for top of 89kg

>>That said, the problem this athlete faces is interesting and I think I would try a different approach from most people.
I like to try random ideas, a kitbashing of thoughts and random aspects. As a non-athlete who experiments and plays with ideas (fair warning), this might be my plan:
- I would try consuming a limited diet, subset to starches etc with limited full-muscle activation for a set period.
- I'd then try adding something very acidic to the diet, or possibly a strong alcohol like rice or grain alcohol, around 40%. Possibly taken in dilution to reduce intoxication.
- Then I'd do a lot of aerobic, low intensity training, initially causing the prior events which likely caused mild weight loss to increase the weight loss a little more, like a pendulum.
- This aerobic zone2 training period would mean limited intensity activities, even in daily life, trying to move very slow qi.
- Then after day 5 begin eating more fat each day and less starch.
- Day 10, and various other days, eat very little, do very little.
- Return to zone2 extended training for 1 day, next day do very little, day after do explosive. Consume lots of fats every 2 days before explosive training or similar type of exercise. Now we are at a "pendulum" like motion, where there is an interval-based building strategy of adding mass. The zone2 training is reciprocal to the body rejecting the fat, by means of epithelial and internal body conditions / conditioning (? I'm not well versed in biology... as mentioned I am just a playful person when it comes to this type of thing.)
For me, getting bigger has been easy (the same trend in the last 50 years), and getting smaller has been impossible, particular in the waist area.

Super heavies have more muscle
and a lot more fat.... let's not kid ourselves. They pick the weight where they cannot push strength any further without sacrificing too much mobility.
As far as I know, within weight classes that aren't at the very high end, being leaner is better. Think of it this way, if you're in the 81kg class and you have 75kg of muscle and 6kg of fat, you're 7% body fat. Compare this to someone with 70kg of muscle and 11kg of fat at 14% body fat. Yes, you won't be at your peak possible strength with 75kg of muscle if you're that low body fat, BUT even then, the 5kg muscle difference will still more than make up for that in the total strength gains even if you're not technically as "efficient" at using that muscle because of your low body fat percentage. As you get into the bigger weight classes though it becomes an issue because moving overall heavy weights becomes more and more of an issue recovery wise. A 109kg class guy C&Jing 240kg in training is going to cause more fatigue than a 81kg guy C&Jing 200kg even if they're both high effort lifts. At that point food and body fat becomes WAY more important for recovery so that you can train enough to hit high numbers.
@@signs80 but you don't have 75kg of muscle. You have bone, internal organs, and water making the majority of your weight all of which don't contribute to strength any more than fat does. Your bone and internal organs mass is constant then on top of that you add fat and muscle up to your weight. In fact losing fat and gaining muscle has an even bigger effect on strength as you can go from something like 35-40kg of muscle (14% increase) rather than 70-75(7% increase)

Wow, this guy looks like a Baki character. His quads are crazy and he's even got the demon back thing going. I'm in awe. :D
I know nothing about olympic weightlifting. Im just here to wish our brother our friend a successfull bulk. May he cultivate the mass he needs.
Bro has one of the most beautiful physiques I've ever seen
he has an amazing physique
I think if they let him manage his food schedule far better and be able to eat more often and more food he will without a problem gain more strength (not muscle) since muscle does not equal strength. While it grows your strength it's about what you put in your body, how much you sleep and how you go with eating.
I did a 7 week bulking where i raised my calories by 3-4k and gained 11 kgs, where of within 3 weeks of doing the bulk i were lifting double weights compared to before, and then when i went back to a normal consumption of 2200-2400 calories after the 7 week period i actually declined in strength by going down to half of what i gained.
Before bulk: 6kg in bicep curls
Middle of bulk: 10 kg in bicep curls
After bulk: 7-8kg bicep curls.
While his muscles might not grow, just putting on fat and body weight will increase his strength to the nature of the body being forced to mass. But not only that properly consuming the food will let his body fully make use of the energy and intake of the protein (yes protein is actually broken down and consumed in multiple ways from different substances that benefits the strength growth not just muscle mass
what cycle do i need to match this?
he just competed this year at 89kg at Junju in May and absolutely destroyed the field
came here for this comment. world record clean if i recall correctly
Highkey a dream physique
Form experience, mass moves mass is true and does not apply super strictly to more muscle and not fat. For example, your bench can likely go up by increasing bodyfat % if you are very lean. This examples stands in contrast to your sled push example.
These guys have the best physiques imo.
It is difficult . Speaking as someone who has trained for American football for most of my life , physics says more mass, more power. As someone who is considered undersized at 175lbs, I was trying to gain weight to compete with 185lbs and 190lbs while still trying to retain my speed an quickness . In order to do that I had to stuff my face with 6 meals a day at around 1500-2000 calories per meal of the healthiest, leanest foods I could find- sure I could easily eat that many calories in fast food, but that would detract from performance as a certain amount of fat does get in the way of muscle fiber recruitment (not to be confused with overall hypertrophy!). I got up to 192lbs but let me tell you: I felt like such a glutton, it is terrible stuffing your face like that.
just make sure you do a fast theres studies that say fasting increases human growth hormone and get the digestion a break.
So by your supposedly insane numbers per meal you were eating 12k cals a day i find that hard to believe. You realise how much food 12k calories is clean it’s impossible.
@@Mal_uim its 10.5k if its 50/50 1500 to 2000 cal meals
still a fuck tona nd hard to believe tho
I don't understand the argument. Are you saying he has reached his genetic potential? Why can't he just bulk like anyone else, put on a bit of fat and gain muscle?
Gaining basically 10kg is extra difficult. Especially if you want to gain more than fat. He's going to have to eat a ton of food and up the PED use substantially to get there.
This is explained in the video. Li Dayin struggles to stuff his face with extra food which is required to gain muscle or fat, and considering most likely enhanced, gaining another 10kg won't be easy
Additionally, he probably is relatively close to his genetic potential in terms of muscularity. He has been training for a really long time and takes things that would enable him to reach his genetic potential faster so he may be able to gain more muscle and fat, it'll just be quite hard
@@bmstylee who said you need to weight 88.9 kg in 89 kg category?
@@amart0 I get the not wanting to eat part, but what does it have to do with "too much muscle"? The genetic potential part makes a bit more sense, but many athletes are able to do it at his level so I'm not sure if having more muscle has anything to do with it.
@@bmstylee and by using more PED gives him more chances of being caught, so is not worth it
Nice lifting bro 💪
Is there a name for the exercise he's doing at 3:53? Or is that just a partial rep hanging clean?
Must be the hard work n dedication he puts in! 😀
I could ship you trucks of special sauce and you wouldn't get this strong or big. It's your inferior genetics
PEDs are part of the game, everyone uses them at this level.
He can gain with time. I went from 77 kg to 99 kg in a few months. I trained harder during this period but I also slept more. Sleep is extremely essential, that's what I noticed. Btw, A jump from 77kg to 99kg is above average. I'm looking forward to his metamorphosis 💪
22 kg in few months sounds legit.
a jump of 22kg in a few months is peak tren usage. its not just above average, its impossible natural. hell even with a shit ton of PED's i think 22kg in a few months is still impossible. unless a few months means 12 month full on saucing for you.
or you we're on the brink of dying from malnurishment which seems unlikely at 77kg even if you we're 7 feet tall.
No fucking way LMAO.
Yes Natural & I did this while working a heavy labor job also. Thx for your replies 👌 stay Natural always.
@@holyjari best I did was 11kg in 11 weeks (natural, 19yo)
Can't gain anywhere near that now, even WITH gear
Being to lean may be a problem in itself, a lot of powertlifters that have a bit of fat are often much stronger, and eating more makes you more explosive, especially if it was via Tacos.
Its not that he can't do it, he just needs a huge increase in food and rest with heavy reps. Its really hard to eat 4 times a day none the less 6-7 times which is needed for muscle growth.
have you ever watched the mr olympia? He can definitely gain more muscle
Yeah, Olympia athletes are usually known for their incredible mobility, athleticism and explosivity.
… bodybuilders are generally considered the most useless for many reasons. Not a realistic comparison
Just isn't a true statement that he can't gain more. I'm not saying that it would benefit him in any way
He's still got to pass the drug test. So he can't dope to that same level.
@@zwryy7622 A prime Ronnie Coleman would wipe the floor with this guy
I need this cocktail in my life.
me too have the same issue, too much muscle with 18% body fat sigh
Whata powerlifter you are man and whata body 💪 too thats harvinder singh great tai chi marshall artist said i am living in jalandhar city in bashir pura area
2:00 that's the beat of Do Guna by seedhe maut 🗿
He shouldn’t be upset. That’s an insane amount sheer raw power.
whatever he chooses to do, i hope it goes well for him.
Tough, I feel like the 96's cutting down already have innate advantages and if most of them manage to retain even half other smass to strength ratio they had at 96 they'd just dominate the 89
great video and you such a great job. Can you explain Lasha? I dont get him he has so much fat yet, well he is lasha. I dont get him
IDK why they have these goofy uneven and arbitrary seeming categories anyway. Why not just 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100kg etc. I mean 81 and 96 on the old metric? Then replacing both with an 89? That's up 8 and down 7, respectively, and there was a 15kg difference between categories which is HUGE given the broad range of heights people can be and how even a 5cm difference in height can make someone look 10kg different from an equally weighted competitor.
Take creatine if he's not already taking it (Easy 5lbs of water), and on the day of the weigh-in chug 5lbs of water & load up on 5lbs of food beforehand. Try to gain 5lb of lean tissue by the time of weigh-in, as well as a little bit of fat. It's doable.
So, mildly incorrect on the "mass moves mass is incorrect thing". On deadlifts and squats, purely having more WEIGHT on your back/backside can help with regards to how the leverages work. Snatches and Cleans both essentially start as an RDL. Also, there's a reason why massive people tend to have massive legs, more weight over constant stress builds more muscle, even when keeping the lifting regimen identical. More calories also effectively increase the amount of work you can do (with limits). It's also REALLY hard for the body to add additional muscle mass under 12-15% body fat, because of how the body builds and repairs cellular tissue of all types, it also would likely put you in a sub-optimal hormonal balance for gaining muscle mass (although I would expect that he has help there outside of competition testing time frames.
4:11 it is not really true. mass moves mass is not only appliable for muscle mass. more fat mass also changes the levers in squat and deadlift. So it really depends on the lift and the lifter
drop down to 71 seems more achievable than going up but he would lose lots of strength on the way down
Shoot imagine if li dayin switches to squat jerk? I say that because imaging him power jerk 220 or above sounds crazy. This will be interesting to see his aproach
I actually thought the same thing about Carlos Nasar at the European Championships. He looked like Mr.Olympia next to some average Joes.
What makes you think he can't gain 18 more pounds of muscle mass?
Each sport has optimum height, weight, genetics.
If your genetics dont match a sport, you are not going to the olympics.
Why are they removing weight categories?
Gaining mass in fat can help tremendously in getting stronger though. Overeating while training helps body to become stronger. Thats why many strongmen and weightlifgers are bulky.
In any case nerving of muscles > muscle mass
some athletes react much better by packing on muscles
others pack on size and strength
