  • The weightlifting technique that we've seen evolve from Moldova's Marin Robu is eye opening as to what the human body can achieve in spite of the restrictions put upon it. Despite ankle, knee, and elbow pain, Marin Robu finds a way!

what would be great is you detailing a bit more about his technique that makes him so unique. As a novice weightlifter but avid gym goer olympic lifts were workouts I recently started only about 2 years ago. Since these motions are not imbedded, and most importantly the technique to maximize my efforts are still being honed I dont see anything within his motions that are outside of the "norm". Maybe a diagram and a flow pause to show what is traditional and what makes this man so unique.
You had mentioned 100k is your goal, bring some of your knowledge to light that isn't just observable for more referential and critiquing. That might engage more people within this space who might want to learn more.

He's such a good example of how "correct technique" has so many variables that we can't know from the outside. The human body isn't a neat set of physics equations where you can just say "here's the most efficient path to take." If he did things the way we think they should be done, he likely would never be moving what he does.

Anatomically, Robu is definitely an anomoly amongst elite weightlifters. Whenever I see people harp on perfect form, I think that they forget the considerations you have to make for a different build with different leverages. He's relatively narrow and lanky, and we're not used to seeing that, his lifts would look different even if he were not coping with old injuries.

Good technique fundamentals beat one up less and are more efficient and (all other things being equal) contribute to a longer, healthier more successful career. But orthodox technique is also a template, not an absolute. Body types, limb and torso proportions all factor in. No athlete body is “ideal” hence “ideal technique” is simply a framework for comparison and correction. Robu is hardly the first elite to work around injuries or problem solve annd “find a way.” Nor are the other elite athletes mentioned unique when it comes to athletic talent making up for technical errors. It’s not a matter of if they would lift more if they corrected little flaws, it’s a matter of they are outperforming everyone around them even with minor flaws: so who cares? (Speed under the bar is, by the way, trainable. Russian sports science shows across high power output sports, including weightlifting, the biggest physical difference between an MS and MSIC athlete is not absolute strength but the ability to explosively relax the muscle groups which just explosively contracted, which launching then getting under bar efficiently absolutely requires.)

I think weightlifting has stifled its own growth because of the, almost dogmatic, emphasis on perfecting the technical aspects as the Eastern Europeans and Chinese. It's turned a lot of potentially good weightlifters from pursuing the sport. Crossfit in the US has changed this. Because there are scores of high school football players who are cleaning 400+ with ease but shy away from the sport of weightlifting because of the overly technical aspects.
I can be wrong. But as a S&C coach for over 25yrs, I've heard the reasoning.
