Congrats Teddy on getting closer to 1 million subscribers! I always look forward to your vids. I would love to see you do a review for aventurine dials available.
2:43 I am so happy that you mentioned the 'Type 20' series! I absolutely love these watches -- the tactile surfaces, the reliable performance, the distinct look and color -- can't get enough.
I was planning to buy a Mark XX and then decided to have look at the Z pilot for comparison. Fell in love with the Zenith on first sight. So much more character than the Mark XX and looks way more modern. Having an in house El Primero movement justifies the price difference over Mark XX to me. Bought the blue dial boutique edition and cant take my eyes off it now❤ Great review Teddy👍🏼
I'm in love with blue one too, IWC Mark XX is nice but there is no comparison to this beauty
Teddy great review like always! I really enjoy your videos. I am curious to know how the new Zenith Pilot compares to the IWC Mark XX. Thank you!
It looks real good in person. I've seen some folks comment on it's thickness, but I think the depth of the case does a lot for it's aesthetic. Gives it an enduring sculptural quality and presence.
I think the calls for it to be thinner stem from the folks that think every watch of every style should conform to a singular timely trend. I think this watch is made to be beyond that. It _could_ be your only watch, but realistically the person buying this (or any Zenith) likely has more anyway.
i agree, plus, 12.8 inches is not that thick IMO, but all depends on personal preference
Great video on an understated piece
A huge fan of Zenith and the El Primero here. Thank you Teddy!
I agree, since it was revealed, this one has been on my shortlist
Absolutely agree. I love this watch and it is on my list for future purchase.
Zenith is just "delicious"! Thanks for sharing this one.
By the way, I just noticed you hit (and passed) 900K Subs! Congrats!!
Bought the pilot big date flyback ceramic and it’s my first zenith. Amazing company and watch. The thickness is an odd one as the crystal is 2mm thick. They don’t wear like 13 (non chrono)/14mm (chrono) thick watches.
Beautiful... but needs a thinner case to be honest. I'll stick with my much cheaper and lovely Mark 16 IWC
yeah i also very much like thy styling of this one, so modern and sleek, looks a bit like a aquanaut to me, but more simple, yet kinda unique. But zenith priceing always catches me offguard, for 4k this would be a great choice.
Absolutely magnificent just love it 💪👍👏❤️❤️
Typing with this watch on my left wrist.
Beautiful Pilot piece from Z...
Luv it !!!
Same here. Luv it!!! ❤
Man I hope these go down in price because I really like them!
The dial surface, lumed applied indices along with Zenith's high beat movement are the touches that put this watch into the luxury realm IMHO. Others near this price range with slower beat rate flat dials and painted indices with prices close to this one are great watches but just don't have the same luxury element you're paying for.
Another of the brands that goes under the radar due to its price point.
Agree. I wished I'd buy a Zenith but every single time, the price is turning me away to other brands in the same price range.
@@pinkbono Excactly
IWC MARK XX is nice but this is beautiful specially blue dial boutique edition.....I'm in love
Hi Teddy, could you please make a video about Pequignet? This is a quite interesting brand with in-house movements
If I was going to get another zenith, it would probably be a defy. Either the revival or one of the skeletonized ones. I own a Captain elite dual time I quite like it, it's a really good watch though, the one downside is that it does not have any kind of micro adjustment or half links on the bracelet. That's one thing that I've noticed about zenith, their bracelets are not as up to snuff as the rest of their stuff.
Aquanaut also comes to my mind. I like it. Thanks.
Price should be more around 5k even though it is a stunning watch. I believe the price is linked to the fact that they are producing a historic in-house movement which is pretty rare nowadays (eta, sellita, ronda, etc…)
Totally agree
if a movement is easy to come by, and the watch is steel, it should cost no more than 600 dollars after tax. Iced out? maybe 1k-2k?
I managed to pick one up with a decent discount - I would agree at full retail it's priced high, but it's a superbly finished watch, with an interesting movement and a bit of modern flair to help it stand out in the market. I love it!
How many % discount?.
@@kikibeldandy About 25%! At that price it’s very favorable. Also come with 2 straps and 2 deployants. I do think it’s a slight step above the IWC, but just my opinion 😊
@@duncanwood4489AD or boutique?
Teddy, I would like to see you review the Zenith Big Date Flyback. Especially how it wears on a 6.5 inch wrist. Thanks.
What a beauty !
This watch is very handsome. I think they ought to try how it looks with horizontal brushing on the bezel to match the relief on the dial.
lot of comparisons to the aquanaut going on here but I think it looks much more interesting than that. Seriously considering one of the blacked out versions as my first ceramic watch.
The more you look at this watch the more desireable it gets….for me as ceramic chrono big date version ❤
Nice looking watch, but outside my price range. Thanks Teddy!
Cut the thickness 2-4mm and it would make a great aquanaut alternative. As it stands, it’s too much wrist presence.
It’s not even that thick, you guys are weird.
Agree
@@nickculbertson1113 the absolute difference isn’t that much, but it’s the vibe that it gives off. Aquanaut is slimmer and dressier. The Zenith isn’t going for the same use case category because of the thickness.
so 9mm thickness??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Bro, just go buy a Bvlgari finissimo at that point.
Nice watch.
I would very much enjoy your thoughts on Victorinox
Good pocket knives
Very good review. Cool design but too pricey for me right now.
Really cool watches. Shame though about the 6 o'clock day window and the price.
I put it on the other day at a boutique. Surprisingly beautiful, especially the steel offering. It sits a bit high, but the rounded side profile makes the height look acceptable. But man, $9000 is way too high for this.
It's $7500 bro, not $9,000. Also you can find them pre-owned all day for aorund $4500 - $5500 easily.
The new Zenith a okay, there not bad at all it's the heavy pricing that is the problem it's not that it's underrated it's price is to much you can put IWC and a few other popular brands asking way to much along with yearly price increases. I would buy this the zenith at 30% off if not I'm not buying.
Just imagine this watch on a bracelet… would be an absolute killer
I honestly think this is proper rated not underrated
Thank god some watch company’s are still using numbers 👍
They are called Arabic Numerals, Paul!
Sometimes, the underratedness of something has merit. Way too expensive for what it is.
If you’ve never held it in the metal, please refrain from such definitive opinions. Finishing is far above whatever models you’re comparing to in your head.
I think it's a great price for what it is. Hi-beat, in-house movement (and not on account of Swatch/Eta). Brand has a fantastic history, and is incredibly safe to wear. And back when I worked at an AD, I wouldn't have had an issue discounting it a little. Dunno if policies have changed since back then.
It's also interesting that a lot of people say it resembles an Aquanaut, since it's not exactly imitating one either. At least I don't consider a mere satin bezel to be so.
💯
I agree with your comment. I have held the metal and ceramic models and do prefer the overall feel of the ceramic. BUT, I didn’t pull the trigger. It does seem about $3k more than it should. Considering the loss on value after purchase, I do believe your comment is spot on. I do like the watch, but not at these prices.
Value is subjective. I will say this much, I own a Zenith A385, it’s my best watch. It’s better than my Omega. I find Zenith as a whole more interesting than say Rolex, something I don’t own personally, but have seen plenty of.
I personally wouldn’t pay full retail for pretty much any Zenith. That said, they are a great value pre owned where they can be bought for better than their horological value, in my opinion.
Six months ago I would have said JLC was pretty much the last great value in high horology. Now they are simply priced about where they should be. No, I’m not suggesting Zenith is high horology, but I am suggesting virtually no luxury watch at this moment in time is a particularly good value bought new. It’s not a terribly rational decision. Zenith represent opportunity if you look preowned.
I completely agree, totally overlooked and a great watch. Even if the IWC Mark XX might be a bit cheaper, it has basically just an ETA 2892 (or ValFleurier) movement, which is embarrasing for the price. Here you get the superb El Primero, and even without having to go for huge chronopraphs. Before I would pay $5,000 for an IWC Mark XX, I would get a Laco or Stowa, which have a comparable movement and the same tradition.
Lol,comparable movement? Do they have 120 pr,antimagnetic soft iron cage? Also IWC mark XX have a class leading bracelet with otf adjustment with the pushbutton on the clasp and way way better finish. You got no clue
@@Bredes1 who got no clue is you. With a bracelet the price is more than $7000. IWC watches are for the most part a complete ripoff, look at the Ingenieur. Just because the movement has a higher power reserve does not make it any better. It is a pedestrian movement, very inferior to the 3620 from Zenith. You can get a watch with the same movement from Baume& Mercier for half of the price of the Mark XX, as I said, a complete ripoff
@@susokraut3169 you said the lower tier brand had comparable movements, but now you speak about zenith? Also how is the zenith better ? What does it do that makes it better ? Please inform me... also Mark XX is 10.8 mm high, it wears amazing. And the Ingeneur is finished amazing aswell. Price a little steep sure.
@@Bredes1 I speak about Zenith, because this is the comment section of a video about a Zenith watch, remember? The Zenith has a superb in-house movement with 36,000 vph and consequently a smooth seconds hand. I also said, if I would go for a watch with a standard, third party movement, I would very much prefer a Laco or Stowa, as these brands have a tradition comparable to IWC but are much cheaper.
@@susokraut3169 you sais Laco and Stowa have comparable movements to the IWC, stupid... Also you have no technical reasoning to why the Zenith movement are superb ,only that its 5hz,wich does not make it better , only increase serviceneeds,so again , stupid. My Mark XX is accurate within COSC, 4hz with 120 hour PR and wears perfect with L2L 49mm and 10.8mm height and the best bracelet in this priceclass,no competition. Its cheaper and its 8 years warranty on the IWC , 5 on Zenith.Zenith got nothing on it.
$7500 for an el primero in a steel case on a rubber strap. And I thought the aqua terra with no micro adjust was getting insane…
I’m getting an Aqua Terra shades on my birthday, does that mean I’m getting an expensive watch? (That’s what I want to know)
@@adamr9570 You dont think 6600 Dollar for a watch is expensive?
@adamr9570 you can get the aqua terra for cheaper than retail. Just as you can get this Zenith for less than retail.
@@Kcsealeshow??

Underrated comment
I've tried on this watch. I wished for one thing, that it had the big date (otherwise a great watch).
Happy Weekend to you all 🥳🤠😎
Nice video - thanks! I don't wear chronographs and the Defy was too caffeinated for me, so my AD showed me the Pilot and I was smitten. Bought it on the spot and I love it.
I had not heard that Zenith holds a trademark on "Pilot", (which at the time might have meant steamboats.)
My AD made two assertions not mentioned in the video. First, that the horizontal waves on the dial are meant to reflect quonset huts used in WWII era airfields. Second, that the rotor is designed to look like an airplane horizon indicator. Both claims seem plausible.
Surely the original intent of choosing "Pilot" was nautical, IMHO. The term has been around since forever (well, at least the 1600s) in that context.
Case in point, the excellent Muhle collection -- from a company that has been making time pieces for folks like nautical pilots since 1869: Their SAR Mission-Timer Titan, for example, sure does resemble a "pilot's watch." And a darned nice one at that.
I am quite surprised at the long lug to lug despite 40mm size
Being a new fan of the channel, I have BINGED older videos, and realized I missed the giveaways....
really love this ss model, but I found that chronomaster goes down in value dramatically
i would have to strongly disagree with you on this one teddy but thanks for your time to share this watch.
I'm confused. If Zenith is the only brand allowed to have Pilot on their dials, how does Oris get away with it on their ProPilot line? Is it because they prefix it with Pro?
Right. It's as if "Propilot" is a wholly different word.
I freaking love this watch! But I think that it’s price should be a bit under the Mark XX
A great watch. I saw it at their Watches&Wonders booth in March, but holy shit: Waaaaaaay to expensive. Who pays that much for a simple 3 hand watch?
Watches of this caliber fall to an enthusiast to spend that kind of money. Most have no idea what the difference is, even when it comes to the movement benefits. Either way, the price point will keep many away, including me.
It's a nice watch, but for 10-11K you could buy multiple watches to create a very impressive three watch collection.
I wish they had a bracelet for this one
I like the older style better.
Seems a bit large to me. 39/48/10 would be nice with silver not black hands.
But still would like to see it IRL. I thought CMS was a bit large until having it on wrist.
Thank you for this, Teddy! For some strange reason people (including watch reviewers) have forgotten that the quality of the movement is what makes a watch brand important. Lately, everyone only talks about designs and forgets to mention that they use cheap 3rd party low accuracy movements that can lose 20 seconds per day (Bel Canto). Please be different from other newly minted reviewers and keep your focus on the quality and accuracy of movements, such as Zenith. I hope there are many folks like me who are not interested in designer brand watches that use cheap, inaccurate third party movements.
which brands specifically are you referring to. Christopher Ward? Help out your fellow watch enthusiasts! Not a fan of cryptic posts like this where someone ambiguously talks bad about a brand or brands but doesn't do the favor of sharing the actual brands so people know to steer clear from them. It basically renders the comment useless 😂.
@steelsteez6118 There are many brands such as Christopher Ward (Bel Canto) and even Studio Underdog that are comparitively low priced options because they use third party, low accuracy movements that reviewers don't explain perhaps because they are sponsored by the brand. I have too many watches that look great but need adjusting every few days.
While the dial is interesting the overall look is nondescript/ boring. Easy to see why it gets overlooked. Better looking pieces that are as good and less expensive are available out there.
There's a shinier hi-beat Grand Seiko, and then...?
@@EdwardViaTomato Snowflake spring drive of course!
Giving aquanaut vibes
Love zenith pilot watch but its so expensive for pilots watch.
If you wear it and squint, you can pretend you have an Aquanaut on your wrist...
Lol this was made long before the Aquanaut, you brainlet.
I don't understand why the 3hands watch's so thick and heavy.
I was all onboard until I learned it lacked a threaded crown and 55 hour power reserve. Not enough value when you see what you can get from pre owned higher horology. Such a shame as I’m always pulling for Zenith.
I love the styling of zenith but every time I put one on the wrist I don’t feel the quality…. I know the movements are impressive, I’ve read all the specs… But something in the build quality always seems to disappoint. Can’t put my finger on it….
felt the same when i tried the defy skyline integrated bracelet. The build quality was a let down.
At this price it’s not underrated, it’s avoided on purpose.
better looking than a rolex, just not as famous. these are really nice you can tell
Underrated but overpriced.
Looks nice enough (only quibble is the hyphen at 6 which leaved the dial unbalanced) but too small. The watch manufacturers must soon run out of skinny people with this tiddly watch trend. Tried it on at Heathrow - felt like a boys' watch. Same with the new IWC Aquatimer - beautiful but a joke size.
Near 50mm lug to lug and a 40mm dial is way too small!? What are you a gorilla?
I just have to stop buying watches.😇😇😇
Worst than alcohol 😅
I dont like how the hands go black and disappear at the center....then the stark white second hand, makes it unbalanced. Lugs are too long...and the horizontal over the date...A rare miss by Zenith
Zenith are cool, but if i was a pilot, gotta be breitling
Zenith is much more appreciated for its chronographs... Zenith's time-only watches are all a bit Underrated 🤔
Iwc
The dial looks like it was made out of a garage door.
I'm wearing an all ceramic case & bracelet Invicta. Swiss quartz and saphire crystal certified for 200 meters water resistance. It cost me under $700 at least 5 years ago. It always looks brand new and the quartz Swiss movement is repairable. Why spend close to $10k for their ceramic case only watch? If it were solid platinum sure or 18k gold.
Because of the finishing, movement and brand cache for a start.
This watch bears a little resemblance to the PP Aquanaut, but I think it executes that design language so much better. The Aquanaut is ugly in my opinion, IWC for the win in my books
Youll never get a true opinion from a reviewer who is also a seller, therefore value comparisons will not be given
That’s a Yema flygraf..
great watch - too big and a bit expensive
Lugs are clumsy, bezel too wide, apart from that …..gorgeous
Love Zenith, but these just don’t do it for me. Mark XX seems like a better pick. And also, good overview of some of Zeniths aviation history, but you skipped the Rainbow Flybacks of the 90s that the new pilot chrono pays homage to.
Zenith is amazing, probably my favorite mid-tier brand. Their finishing puts comparable Rolex and Omega models to shame.
I may be biased, but Zenith could only be considered "mid-tier" in terms of popularity. I think pretty much all their other aspects would put them at a rather high level of prestige.
@@Bu-22 Zenith has more in-line with most of that list than AP does, in that list.
Just buy a snk381 if you wanna save some money :)
Underrated or overpriced? Zenith is not a prestige brand, and is missing the mark with their pricing.
If you're gonna spend big $$$ on a pilot's watch, IWC is the way to go. Zenith is not iconic enough in this category
Nice watch but far to expensive.
Trop cher !
Wondered why the "Pilot" looks so strange? yes? well - perhaps check this out (no offense Teddy)
It's kind of boring looking, but I guess in person it will look great.
What a perfect watch…. Oh wait, 50mm lug to lug. Unwearable for me. Too bad.
I feel too poor to have an opinion on these pieces 😢💦
Price is a joke, hard pass.
7k rofl gtfo...😊
Those quotes look terrible. Apart from that, a lovely watch
Meh. I’ll stick with sub 1k Seikos.
10K dollars for a mechanical wristwatch? Common, why and who in his own mind would pay that much when he can get beautiful mechanical Seiko for 800 $
rich people lol, $10k its like 10 cents to them
They hold much of their value. In some business circles there is an expectation to be wearing an expensive Swiss watch.
Teddy sure likes his boring-looking watches. Considering the price point, I don't see many people going for this one.
I just hate the logo
