A great video, I have been fishing for pike probably longer than you have been alive, I have always fish for pike with the deadbaits, I have never thought about going over to lures but in recent years I have not been out because of my health, i had a stroke about 5 years ago, now I'm ready to go pike fishing again as long as I'm on a boat & I saw your video, its great & could be the way I fish in the future, I will have to find out how to rig them up but I will keep an eye out for more of your videos, thank simon

A tip for the shadteez is at times I find then in tackle stores in packs of 3 with a jighead and stinger pre rigged (not built in but rigges, so when the shad itself is broken you can just save the riggs for another one) for 150 nok (15 quidd in the queens, but norway is generally an expensive place so probobly cheaper elsewhere) this is great for begginer anglers, as you get the rig and the shad for essentially 5 quidd, which is almost what a 2 pack of stingers is by themselves, so if you see those give them a try, 3 of the same colour in the pack is abit of the shame, but as mentioned you can always just take the rig out, and put it on another shad.

My main venue local to me in Northampton is the grand Union it's usually a grey colour. I found green tomato colour worked on soft lures in summer but can't seem to get anything in winter. I'd like to know more about approaching cold winter canal fishing. lures and bits and methods for perch and zander but traveling light

Hi Thom, firstly thanks for the info you put out, has changed the way I approach things for sure. Do you use a spike to keep the stinger in place? Looks like you might even loop it around the hook? I tied some stingers direct to the jig head’s 2nd loop with surflon the other day but they flop around a bit.

I just have two question, i want to try pike fishing with 12cm shadteez , around 24 lb braid here on the 13 f super clear canal. What is the most natural color shadteez i can use in your opinion ? Also what strength fluorocarbon leader do i need ? Thanks in advance.
The canal is around 13 f deep, and i can see the bottom. It makes fishing very hard, but not impossible.
I would try very clear lures, sparkling green is a very natural colour, also Smelt, headlight etc all great in clear water. For pike and flurocarbon use minimum 0.9mm 👍🏻

I fish Rutland a lot and I’m still yet to catch a pike over 20lbs…. What would your go to jig head weights be while using 12&16cm shad teez lures on Rutland whilst fishing for pike and do you find a steady straight retrieve low in the water works best?

Hi there, the pike fishing at Rutland
can be really tough as it’s so huge. Usually I’m fishing 15-25g on either size, and retrieve totally depends on the day and the water temperature, sometimes they are roaming around midwater and sometimes they’re near the bottom, that’s where good fish finder technology is critical
@@Thomhuntfishing thanks a lot Thom, I appreciate your reply…..I’ve never done well fishing the marginal drop off personally at Rutland, only catching very small jacks in the sub 20ft water but all of my bigger doubles have been from very deep water of 40/60ft in general.
Unfortunately I don’t really have the money to spend on a high quality sounder so obviously limited to the tech I can use but If you were to have one tip you’d share for pike fishing Rutland what would it be?

Once the pike are over 30ft deep it’s very difficult to target them specifically. They’re usually over that depth after about mid to the end of October, so getting on there in September and start of October and fish in the 15-25ft range 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Most baits will work, it’s much more about location, once you find 1 there will be more around so cover lots of water until you get a bite or follow then concentrate in that area
Location is far more important than skill when it comes to any fishing
Yes and no. Being in the right location is obviously important, but then when many people are in the right ‘area’ there’s a reason I win so many tournaments and others, who were also in the right area, don’t.
Great vid, I’m a bit late but any chance you could tell me the length of the stinger on the first rig you’re showing off?
It’s 4.5-5” I make my own so just aim to put it far enough back that it’s far enough away from the main hook but not so far it’s stopping the tail from working 👍🏻
Bang on about 12 to 13cm lures. Caught loads of jacks on my local canal on that size.
Yep cracking size for small pike. Big enough to be clearly visible but small enough to get a good hook up ratio

For reservoirs I use 25-30lb braid, for rivers use 65lb (more snags)

Hi Richard, the Midlands reservoirs are great for pike fishing on boats 👍🏻 they can be tough fishing but have big fish in. Not sure about others but most rivers that are 3-4ft+ deep will hold numbers of pike 👍🏻

This video is fantastic, very very important, but which jighead size to choose in the 16cm and 12cm shadteez?
For weight of jig head depends on depth but most of the time for 8-20ft I use 10g or 15g. For 16cm Shadteez I like 8/0 hook size, for 12cm Shadteez I use 5/0 or 6/0 👍🏻

Could you make in depth video about what size hooks and jig heads you use on your lures? For example what trebles for 19cm Shadteez or 18cm Bull? Some say below 20cm shads need only one 1/0-2/0 treble, and some ready rigs run 2 pieces of #1 hooks, which is correct? Great videos still, learning alot new stuff.

Do you recommend a specific rod action (fast, moderate, etc.) for fishing paddle tails on jig hook?
For pike I like a more moderate/through/parabolic action as you are often fishing a straight retrieve so a softer rod gives a little extra time for them to get the bait fully in the mouth before setting the hook. For Perch or Zander I like a faster rod as more sensitive to smaller bites and quicker strikes 👍

Do you find that a softer parabolic rod v. a stiff fast rod impacts casting distance? I live in the Northeast United States and fish the Finger Lakes and, hopefully soon, the big bays of Lake Ontario, so I need to optimize gear for covering water rather than accuracy. I used to fly fish for pike, but have switched over to spinning gear. Trying to manage line control and boat control with fly gear became so limiting: I felt like I was just fighting myself. I still love fly tying, so I stated tying hair jigs and pouring my own grubs and paddle tails for trailers.

Hi Peter, depends on the brand as they vary slightly but a 4/0 or 5/0 is what you’re looking for with 12cm. (2/0 or 3/0 on 8-10cm)
I'm having a good go at lure fishing....disaster! To be honest, but I'm lurning at lot from your excellent vids, think I gravely underestimated how much detail I need to put into this art.
roland smith I probably go a bit over the top and think about it too much, but as a tournament angler I’m always looking for those last % gains and an edge over other people. If you just like pleasure fishing with lures, stick to the basics and you’ll still catch plenty of fish. For love nor money can I catch on the shadteez 16 cm or jerkbaits, it's very odd I'm not sure if it's venue, clarity or whether I'm fishing too big, but soft plastics see to be really hard to catch on on my local. I'm adding pauses and speeding up and slowing down but get nothing. I can only seem to catch on spinnerbaits and savage gear low rider with stop and go retrieves at last light, I figure I must be doing something wrong. It's a big fast most murky river so I'm not touching bottom as you've stated(I just lose lures when I do) I can see baitfish topping and the matchmen have been catching fish. I have been throwing smaller soft plastics also with no joy, I can't keep blaming the local seal 🤣 I look forward to your response and possible video, thanks alot Thom.
@@nathanielpudwellksi2506 Hi Nathaniel, yes I’ll put the question on the list! Got quite a few to catch up on! Regarding the venue you mentioned, how much clarity do you have in the water eg when you drop a lure in can you lose sight of it after 2” or 12” or 3ft?
It's been quite good recently about 2 to 2 and a half feet, but often in the depths of winter after alot of rain and it rains alot in the northwest its often 3 to 6 inches of clarity. Actually had a fish on a 5inch soft plastic not yesterday the day before and also one on a jerkbait yesterday still look forward to your answer ps the 16 cm shadteez swims alot better now I have taken the rattles out of it still no follows though very strange. Maybe I shouldnt twitch the shadteez when I'm retrieving, that would be a good topic to talk about the retrieve styles that don't work or could potentially scare the fish.
Can you weedless rig the shadteez?
You can rig the 9cm on a weedless EWG hook, but you have to turn it 90° and fish it on its side, which is a great presentation actually. For the 12cm, depends what you’re fishing for (perch Yep rig as above, pike avoid weedless hooks) and for the 16cm it’s a pike bait so I avoid weedless hooks at all costs for Pike as for every 3 bites you get you’ll only land 1 pike. Awful hook up ratio for pike on weedless hooks

Not mega relevent but always found it interesting how diffrent countries value either weight or length, here in norway older folks talk about weight (probobly since they more often fish to eat the fish i suppose) and younger folks talk about length, while in uk and us I almost always year weight being discussed not length, I preffer length personaly just beacuse fish vary in weight throughout the year, you can catch the same pike twice and it could vary quite drasticly in weight, meanwhile its length changes much less, but its obviously just preffrence and culture more so than anything, just find it interesting.
saying Denmark has huge, unpressured lakes, what a joke, Sweden sure, Denmark? no way
To be fair, I’ve only fished a few lakes in the Silkeborg area and some of them are private so maybe I’m wrong. However compared to the UK, we have a population density above twice as much as Denmark and many of our lakes are small so they seem pretty large and unpressured from our point of view. But yes you’re right in Sweden, and definitely Norway too they have even more fishing available to less people
