Glad I found your channel, it's nice to hear someone promote small /medium baits to catch fish (pike specifically), as opposed to the big baits = big fish school of thought. I've recently downsized my baits and my catch rate has gone through the roof, plus the fight on the lighter rods is great fun when out on a short session. Thanks for the great tips 👍
Hi David, yep totally agree with you there. There are times a big bait can be useful, but a lot of the time, especially if we only have time for shorter session, downsizing for a few bites on light kit is quick and fun 👌👌👌👌

That was a great video.... really good clear information. Ive had a cracking summer season using crankbaits for chub on my local river. I've never been consistent with my perch lure fishing though. I tend to fish soft plastic shads like slimteez , keiteck impact fat swing and crayfish creature baits (carolina/cheb/dropshot etc..) but i tend to just pick up pike. I know having fished chew that alot of the big perch are had on small cranks.... do you think cranks are a good searchable for perch on rivers? Or would chatterbaits and spinnerbaits be preferred?... I really want to crack the perch this year, but i haven't found my form so far 😕
the occasional angler Yes the perch fishing on crankbaits at the right time of year is fantastic. I’ve had 31 perch this year over 3lb and about 20 were on crankbaits. They work well on rivers but I generally select shallower running ones and use them a lot in the summer as the deeper running ones will get stuck in snags. Can’t go too wrong with the Westin Buzzbite 5cm I’ve caught loads of perch on rovers with that. Goes to about 5ft deep so depends on your rivers but the ones I fish are about 8ft in the middle

So from you experience, what water temperature would you be looking to swap up from more active baits (crankbaits/ chatterbaits etc..) to more finesse slowpaced softplastics ?
the occasional angler when the waters warming up in the Spring anything from about 9 or 10 degrees and above. Crankbaits really shine when it’s over 15 degrees. It’s also possible to still catch on them in the depths of winter, usually when conditions are settled (settled pressure, not bitterly cold, not on east or north east winds etc) but that’s when you’re looking for a very tight wiggle bait rather than a wide wobble bait
I was fishing 8cm shads yesterday, and I was getting plucks constantly but not hooking up... any idea what was going on? I dropped down to a 7cm and still wasn't getting any hook ups? Was sure the fish were present. I was with my son so wasn't at my best due to his tangles lol. What should I do in that situation if I'm confident iv found fish? Bloke next to me caught a 3lb perch ledgering maggot. I'm determined to catch a 2lb plus perch on lure. Any advice welcome. Thanks for vids.
When you get plucks in stead of proper bites it’s telling you there’s something wrong with your offering. Keep trying different colours, different size lures. Sometimes smaller 5cm baits are best, sometimes bigger 12cm baits are best.
@@Thomhuntfishing thanks.. I was thinking I might be fishing too big a shad, I think next time I'll swap and change more... the tip of my rod was bouncing and pulling but I just couldn't hook into any! Was weird
I enjoyed the video but I feel too many types of baits have been labelled as crankbaits in this video that are not truly crankbaits. I would agree that everything bar perhaps the platypus on your left side is a crankbait but the other side is debatable in my opinion. Especially the jointed lure as I consider that a swimbait.
Yep 100% the jointed lure is a swim bait, not a crankbait.... just wanted to fit it in as it’s such a good hard bait in the right conditions! Also made another crank bait video recently you might be interested in... I’ll drop a link to it below 👍🏻

What braid would you use with crankbaits? I'm currently using 25lb braid on the finesse crank-t. Would you go to maybe 18lb braid?
Yes I use about 0.13mm 8 strand high quality braid. 16-18lb I think it is 👍🏻
Where do bully bites shine. I have two but haven't caught anything on them yet?

I can't get over you calling them crank baits. In the UK we always used to call them plugs.
Yeah that’s quite an old term I used to use myself back in the 90’s!!!
