We'll see it happen in the majors someday, no doubt. The generation of prospective MLB players who would have grown up with the Backyard Sports games (I'm using 1991/92 as a yardstick, for 5-/6-year-olds that would have played the original Baseball) and broken into the majors en masse has ended and some of them will no doubt have introduced those games to THEIR kids who go on to play in MLB.
Someone had a video ranking all the walk up songs and said Annie's was just the American version of Pablo's and now I have to spread the curse of this knowledge
Pablo was *that* kid we all knew IRL that excelled in nearly every sport that tried. The first pick of the team captain. My star running back in BYFB 2002, helped me win 106 to 3 in this one game. Nuts.
The best backyard athlete is Maria Luna, but only if she’s on a team with a pink uniform. Gets god tier stat buffs in every category when you fulfill that requirement
I remember people talking about multi sport athletes that changed the game, Bo Jackson, Jim Thorpe, Deion Sanders, Tim Tebow. All legends of the game, sure, but if you ask anyone from my generation who could translate their immense talent to succeed anywhere, it has to be Pablo Sanchez. Pablo's dominance in sports of all shapes simply was unmatched, the papers couldn't stop talking about it, and collecting all the baseball cards of Pablo from all his sports is a goal almost none have achieved. Listening to his exploits on the radio or looking through the window at the TV store to catch a glimpse of Pablo, a game on each TV. Pablo Sanchez changed American sports and this nation forever, an icon beyond names like "The Babe", "Say Hey Kid", "Dr. J", "Bear Bryant", "Satchel", no it was the "Secret Weapon" who was a weapon so secret, every man, woman and child in the world would know his name.
Pete is actually so insane. It says 10/10 speed but that might as well be 11/10. My usual strategy was to have him as the lead off hitter and bunt him to first and then proceed to steal every base. But the thing is, his stats were good enough in other places so you didnt have to do that. He can hit bombs too. Plus in the original 1999 version he was a sick pitcher as well, so his pitching stat got nerfed in later games.
Console BYF Pete wheeler was a cheat code as the running back. You just needed to run straight up the middle and it was a guaranteed 5 yards. You could stack the box with every defender and it didn’t matter cause the blocking forced a gap. My dad and I named a play “up the gut” and we had to ban if from 2 point conversions (literally 100% success rate) and you could only use it once on a drive.
@@corbums3927 It really doesn't matter. The BB discord knows he's either like the number 1 or number 2 player in the game. He has a lot of attributes that are not immediately visible that make him op. He's insane he's an inside home run machine. He's a really good contact hitter in the game he don't miss. He does everything extremely well. He ends up being a lot better fielder than Pablo which is a huge deal.
I love that almost each and every kid in backyard sports has a personality. A different look, attitude, everything. It really made the series very inclusive!
@JarrekAsF honestly, more than likely not. I've been part of competitive leagues before and in every generic is available too. There are not only generics who are better overall than Pablo but who don't also possess his weakness, lack of height. He's still usually an early (more mid actually. Memory was rusty) first rounder, but think more top 10-15
15th actually, out of 24 teams. They use mods to change the gameplay a little bit and it also unlocks the generic players which are used in single player seasons. Pablo is great but he is ridiculously inconsistent in fielding
The fact that backyard soccer wasn’t like “the primary game” to you just goes to show that what you were saying about these games being kind of a different experience for each of us is very accurate. I had backyard soccer and backyard baseball, probably purchased around the same time. Then I got football, but basketball, soccer, and skateboarding I never even saw
I once did a "Worst Squad" in Brett Farve's Quarterback Club 2000 and Mcnown was my QB. Super Early Days before EA bought a fear small titles like that one and folded them into Madden before the exclusive license that forced out 2k
I've always loved the backyard sports games growing up. Played at least one game from each series for hours. Some of the easter eggs are pretty fun, but there's one in particular that will always stand out as being particularly unhinged. In Backyard soccer (2003 i think) you start out playing in the lowest of 3 leagues, with the ability to promote if you finish well in a given season. If you can manage to win all 3 leagues, you'll unlock the ability to play in the world cup. In this world cup you have the opportunity to play against different countries with custom teams, the countries can be identified by their flags next to their team names and logos. These names would almost always be related to the country. For instance, the Japanese flag shows up next to the logo for a team called "The Origami Tsunamis" Makes sense as Japan is an Island nation and is associated with Origami. Like every custom team in Backyard sports, there is an adjective before a noun for each of these teams, but unless you play against these world cup teams, you can't see their adjectives. Because of this, I don't know what adjectives go with the Netherlands (Windmills) or Peru (Alpacas) (again, both very fitting) The one outlier that had always confused me was Russia. The Russian flag was next to the team known as the Bees, which always seemed like such a strange connection to me. Why on earth would Russua be the Bees? Was Russia known for honey production or something? This bothered me for a long time, until finally, after grinding through a number of world cups, I played against the Bees... The Cagey Bees. The last thing I had expected to see in a kids game was a reference to the Russian KGB, and it still blows my mind that somebody threw that in the game

Also, for those who don't know, Humongous Entertainment also made the Freddy Fish, Pajama Sam, Putt-Putt and Spy Fox. This point-and-click mastery is because Humongous was formed by employees from LucasArts, namely Ron Gilbert, who worked on Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island.
It's frankly a miracle that Backyard Baseball '97 works at all. It's a baseball game that's running on the friggin' SCUMM engine! That's the same point-and-click engine that powered all the great LucasArts and Humongous Entertainment games. You can kind of tell when you think about just how the game controls and how it struggles at times to run simultaneous actions, but it still manages to do its job, and Humongous' always-excellent character design and art style plasters over the cracks with raw charm.

Not all stats are created equally. Speed is king, in part because it's always relative to other players. Give Pete Wheeler the ball and congrats, you now only have to deal with players in front of you. Overalls in a game like Football manager have speed 2 or 3 times more valuable than other stats, and from my experience with Pablo and Pete this heuristic transfers over to Backyard games.
To illustrate this in another way, in motorsports, the difference between the fastest car on track and the slowest is sometimes less than 1%. A speed of 98 is a backmarker; 99 is a champion.

Amazing video directly in my childhood. I totally get sticking to the Humongous era, but I will die on the hill on that Backyard Baseball I think it was 2005 was the best game. Maybe even my favorite ever video game.
Amazing this video drops just as I started streaming the OG Backyard Baseball. I'd love a deeper dive into that original 1997 game that started it all.

the greatest video and the interviews are amazing to have
Kofie is the Pablo Sanchez of Secret Base🐐
Amazing video directly in my childhood. I totally get sticking to the Humongous era, but I will die on the hill on that Backyard Baseball I think it was 2005 was the best game. Maybe even my favorite ever video game.
I miss backyard sports so much and wish someone would bring em back!
This is what we've been waiting for
congrats. you revived this series by speaking his name
This is nothing short of wonderful kofie
Backyard Sports is getting a new game
Amazing this video drops just as I started streaming the OG Backyard Baseball. I'd love a deeper dive into that original 1997 game that started it all.
great video. always need more kofie
Backyard Skateboarding was a staple in my childhood. It was SO hard to finish some of the missions, and I get the feeling I’d struggle just as much now 😅
Great video!
Pablo, that was my boy! Thanks Kofie!
Who else came right back here after it was announced Backyard Sports series is back!
