Hey Legend, there is an option that allows you to change the retinue UI to make it more like other total war games so you won't have to make control groups.
Need to vote this comment up for the Legend to see :)
Usually I use G or whatever button you press to group to sort out the units. If your units aren't in order under a specific retinue, you can press it twice to group them up in that retinue
in the interface or gameplay options you can change the unit grouping from retinue to unit type, which is more like the way it was in previous TW games
I had no idea about this, thanks for the tio
About as many strangers as read this comment just fell in love with you
IIRC u saved Gongsun Zan from his actual death in history from the exact same enemies rofl
Repeating crossbows are suppression units, meaning they give a debuff to the enemy they are shooting at.
EDIT: I checked it's -33% ranged attack rate, -500 melee charge bonus, -25% charge speed, and -33% melee attack rate
Sounds like it comes down to a support unit.for other melee infantry units. Probaby decent for PVP, but completely useless for Legend`s playstyle. ;)
Most effective when using a staggered attack. Use the deviations in the formations to find firing lines.
Think of them more like javelins., with a slight elevation they can fire over allies.
But they are still archer fodder.
the tiny range still makes them worthless. suppression doesn't really matter when you can just gun the whole unit down at long range with regular crossbows so they all die before they reach you.
so i guess they can be placed behidn cav? to suppressenemy cav before you charge in?
They actually make a decent frontline despite the "weak in melee" because even in melee, their backline can keep on firing and applying the debuff long enough for your hammers.
I'm really happy you're playing 3k on saving disaster. You rock
Also, Legend, if you don't like units being grouped by generals, there's an option to group them up by unit types like in previous games.
Holy shit really? I need to pay more attention to the settings menu.
Nice.
YES!!!! Finally a proper strategist playing Three Kingdoms! Been loving the diplomacy, really looking forward to you doing more Three Kingdoms content. I wish CA would give you credit and be a part of mending the relationship between you two.
What happened?
@@joshuamills1296IIRC He trashed a game they gave him a review copy of which led to them blacklisting him.
As an aside Legend, a cool little feature that seems new is that for siege battles if you look for the little muted green house icons, those are your campaign map buildings and so if those are damaged in the battle they're damaged on the campaign. It's a nice feature that gives consequences, and reminds me of when you could view cities in R1 to see all your buildings.
Repeated crossbows' shots are "suppression" shots which reduces 500% charge and 33% firing rate and some other things as well I think melee evasion or melee attack rate. They only said their role is "suppression" but never said they had this suppression shot in their unit detail, but you can see they apply the suppression shot debuff to their targets, so I guess one unit of it in your army applying that 15s debuff to all enemies could be useful. I think many people misunderstood it as a quickfire damage unit, though its quick rate of fire does do that as well but it is probably not the main intended use.
Woooow, banishing Tian Kai? That man was my Grand Commandant and second most trusted general after Zhao Yun. Can’t believe you did my boy like that
You should use night battle whenever available, it gives a -15 morale debuff to the enemy army.
^^^^Some units only start with 40ish and at 25 a flank will break if not rout anything.
you should always do night battles as they are -15 morale for your enemies
REALLY!? No wonder a half stack broke after a few trebuchet shots and the warcry(or was it shout?) ability on very hard.
Nice info, when defending or attacking?
@@SkyYun999 defender always gets the penalty.
You can't choose Night Battle as defender. Because as defender, you don't get to pick the time of battle, the attacker does.
Look, the enemy run. CRAVEN!
TY for the change up.... love your streams of total war
I've been playing with all Chinese voice, English subtitle and it sounds SOO much better than this. The english voice acting sounds like the stereotype chinese accent you had in movies back in the 90's
It sounds so racist, I expect when Daiochan meets LuBu for the first time she goes, Oooh you strong GI, me love you longtime.
Game has been out for a week, and people are already finding curious ways to screw up
Imagine that
I personally think it's way easier to screw up in this game, the easiest way is to war with Overlord Yuan Shao and not kill him quick enough
At the beginning its easy to screw up, just like in school hahaha
It is hilariously easy to dig yourself into a hole in three kingdoms, alot of times you don't realized you screwed up until late game where you find yourself sandwiched between the other 3 (or 3 if you are playing Yellow turban) powers
I always goof in New games. Once I've gotten a couple hundred hours in I'm like "I am God, fear me peasants"
With the current vassal system it's really easy to get your trustworthiness rating completely fucked since you're the one who becomes a deal breaker if you protect your vassal from someone you had a deal with. That alone can get you into all kinds of trouble
Those early military reforms are just in the way of the two -2 mustering turns and the granddaddy +10% replenishment. If you combine that with having the -25% redeployment cost on your Leader, Heir, and Prime Minister stacked up you can recall a wasted down army on one side of your empire and redeploy it next turn on the other side of your empire at full strength after a turn of mustering.
What's this? Legend finally playing 3K??? I'm in!
The insults make more sense in traditional mandarin, it comes out quite distasteful when translated.

Or the Hound.
"If any man dies with a clean sword I'll rape his fucking corpse!"
In Chinese they are spouting idioms. It's more a bad translation.
I just have one comment to make: Don't EVER take ransom money from a general you captured over an item you can take from them after executing them. EVER. Any item you can take from a general you've captured sells for WAY more than what you can get from a ransom which at best is only 500 coin. Take the item and sell it in diplomacy to another faction. You will always get at least 1k or more from items.
Except for the fact that executing generals makes the owner+his allies/vassals hate you more for every general you execute. Its a quick way to make entire china hate your guts and declare war on you.
@@666Kaca Lol I just did an entire playthrough of the Sun faction and always executed any general that yielded an item and that definitely is not true at all. It's worth noting that rivalries, which can come of that, can also go away with time. For example, I had Cao Cao declare war on me about 20 turns in, I executed 4 of his generals I caught, only he hated me for it, and by turn 70 I received an invitation to join a coalition with him and then the following turn I got a notification that we were no longer rivals and I have a great relationship with him.
@@noneyabizz5306 Gongsun zan playthrough, once 3 kingdoms era started i declared war on liu bei, he was in an alliance with he yi, dong min and duchy of zhong(xu chu was faction leader). Executed all of his generals until i took his capital(henan iirc) then checked their relations with me and each one of them had -170 for executing our generals or executing the generals of our friends.
For kingdom of wu, i executed only a select few generals which had really good items, otherwise i let them go, after i checked relations i had a +for releasing our generals/treating our prisoners fairly.
@@666Kaca Most generals aren't going to have stuff on them so you can release them for ransom. Just the ones that do should be executed. It balances out overall. I've honestly never had a problem with it.
@@noneyabizz5306 Most generals late game have items because the AI buys a shitton of ancillaries form me during the game. I only had a problem executing generals late game cuz of diplomatic repercussions.

Just like in Nam XD.

I find it amusing that someone found this situation as a disaster. As long as your enemies are from only one side and you have an army with 3 full retinues, you have nothing to worry.
If you are still wondering yes credibility is specific to Cao Cao as unity is for liu bei
as you see at 36:00 polearm cav and spear cav absolutely wreck the shit out of most generals. aside from sentinels most generals get survivability from armor and mass, and a large enough clump of cav can lock them in pretty well while also ignoring their armor. the only times it doesn't work that well is against generals with very high melee evasion either from expertise or active abilities. other exception can be if they have a horse with very high mass (like Lü Bu) but that's so rare it almost never comes up
36:51 The've taken up defensive formations on the captured settlement ... I like it
Says not a pro, beats back 5 armies with one army with barely any losses and calls it a day. Yep legend never changes.
you do know this game more or less works more or less the same as total war warhammer right the same tactic will work to win on this game for the most part during the campaign that's how he wins
@@robert23456789 yea man I know I've been playing total war games since Medieval II, just getting a point across.
The battles are in normal difficulty though, not that it isn’t impressive but it’s something to consider. I mean this guy can probably do the same on legendary in a game he’s more familiar with.

You can tick 'sort by unit type' in the options instead of using control group to tidy up the panel
Hey legend, just a point of interest, but at the split second decision you made to rush the trebuchet, i would loved to have seen what those 4 units of cav wouldve done to the back line of their mass of infantry at your towers whilst getting pinned by your infantry, i think you would give them major casualties if not even a possible win.
I’ve just learned this but if you don’t like the grayed out soldiers on the unit cards you can go to setting and click alternate unit cards. They look way better in my opinion
I know im talking to the void because you already have your opinion on the repeating crossbows but their purpose isnt to get kills from the back line they are for suppressing enemy archers and running to the back of a spear line and just lighting things up at close range consider them Free company from WH2 empire roster
He hates the Free company too, a flanking ranged unit does not play into LoTW's play style.
weirdly enough I'd say the faster paced, shorter battles suit your commentary/skill. We get to see a lot more battle tactics and such and its nice haha
Really like it...it's a nice change of pace from constant Warhammer SYDC content. Obviously, it's probably not ideal from your perspective since you've been very vocal about which games you can stand and which ones you can't, but nevertheless, it's refreshing not seeing yet another SYDC with a thumbnail of some fucking lizard or butt goblin. If that's what brings the views (and thus pays the bills) then understandably that's what you have to do, but from a Total War fan who couldn't give a shit less about Orcs and all that nonsense, I appreciate this type of content. Variety, spices, life, etc.
Finally some three kingdoms disaster campaigns!
1) I really need to learn to fight battles, I'm terrible at them, this really showed me it's rarely worth auto'ing them. 2) Gongsun pretty much is guaranteed to have to fight everyone around him, or at bare minimum the lord to the west and Yuan. They are just looking for that fight. worst case is everyone, and I've had that happen multiple times. 3) I agree started w/this game, got total war warhammer, and in that game you might as well always be at war w/everyone, attrition doesn't seem to harm the AI near as much as you. 4) w/Gongun Du I just keep trading rice to him to keep him happy, every 10 turns just reup it, he never seems to have food, make him dependent on your food and he becomes almost like a vassal
I've been watching four 3K youtubers campaign, I gotta say you're the best one in using your limited resource. Your strategy to butcher the enemy is also the best
Legend I’m drunk and I can only watch this with one eye open
By the way, there's a setting in the options where you can change the way armies are displayed during battles. Gets rid of the stupid retinue thing and orders the units like in TWWH2
Trebuchets are OP. Have 2 in my army, with the scholar retinue having 4 xbows as well. Then have spears in turtle form to block, and cav to flank. Win battles easily. Trebs were rank 10 in no time, so a lot of enemy units only need 1 or 2 volleys to be so weakened theyre useless and have little morale left.
Ben H I use artillery in every total war game quite a bit, and it is indeed really OP. This is also the reason I NUT hard when I played the dwarfs in TW:W
The trebuchet resemble the Armstrong guns in Fall of the Samurai
Legend: "I'm not doing 3K content cause everyone is doing it"
*Next Day: Uploads SYDC 3K
Seriously now, good to see you doing 3K videos, you rock
OH SHIT!
By the way, your review was really really good. And I learned the cheese about wasting the enemies arrows.
I was worried 3KTW would turn out to be the classic M2TW "The challenge is that you have to fight spamstacks off every single turn," which seems to be the case: though he has tons of enemies though...
You can have your army comp be based on type like previous total war games. It's in the game option menu. That way you don't have to use control groups
how does he have Ma Teng? wtf
His faction was destroyed and he fled to him.
100% agree about the catapults! When they reach Level 10, they are LETHAL. Very useful in sieges for precision strikes.
repeating crossbows don't get a lot of kills but use them on your flanks side way (behind spear or axes) so if their cav flanks you they get debuffed and wont do ''any'' damage.it's good if u don't have cav or less cav.for spears they'd give u more time to relocation and for axes and such, they would be perfectly fine after the charge because of the debuff
repeating crossbowman inflict a malus upon charge damage, movement speed and moral on the unit it fires on. It still isnt a good dps dealer, nor is it it's role (marked as a suppression unit, not bombardment)
Looks like they made cavalry charges satisfying again.
When looking at the value of repeating crossbows, i hope you take into consideration the debuff they apply. That unique debuff can make for some fun changes in the overall makeup of your army.
I wish when an army garrisons a city, it would also use the military supplies when being besieged. It would make a lot of sense. Maybe an army can only recover military supplies if a settlement has supplies itself + it subtracts from the province itself... This would make the game a lot more interesting.
Flat maps and archer superiority are about 400 years out of date for the historic setting. The units take too little space on a too zoomed in battle map. Cavalry and navy dominated the era because battles were fought over massive distances. Also in the rare event generals dueled, they would never dismount.
Ha legendoftotalwarhammer...hey wait a minute!
41:43 That poor soldier...has to run back to his own unit while spears poke him from behind lol.
well done Legend.
'Saving' vids on 3kingdoms is exactly what the comp doesn't have.
All the Tubers who pissed around with 3K didn't come close to the entertainment and insight you presented here.

Un-fuck more plz
at 2:50 you banished a person so you dont have to pay them. You can also release them from service, so you dont get the negatives. Though I can understand that banishing will help your financial situation a bit as well
The explosive shot on the treb is so painfully overpowered in campaign, but I love using it
Its honestly not that hard to counter, It's just that the AI doesnt know what prioritizing with cavalry or archers are. Whenever the AI brings out cavalry, i counter it with Cavarchers or ligt cav. Even if i lose the cav, i save the infantry
Why won't he play live stream or lets plays of 3k?
He is under the impression that the amount of people that would show up for a 3k live stream would be conciterably less then the amount of people that do show up for WH2. I get it from his perspective, his streams have a pretty stable 900-1500 people that show up and a good amount of donations for WH2.
the reason you cant target a general after duel is that honor is to not pursed a defied general after a duel it not honorable for a comander to hit a downed enemie
You can enable the classic tw unit ui in the game options.
Also the button next to the question mark in the top right of the stats window of a unit enables comparison mode so you don't have to switch all the time
Im enjoying three kingdoms so much im so sad you not making lives of it
Could you explain why you aren't uploading any of your own 3K gameplay?
The gist of it from watching streams is that he isn't streaming or uploading 3K content other than disaster campaigns because it's just a bad business decision for him. Everyone who is streaming / uploading 3K is getting lower views than they would usually and lower than he gets streaming / uploading Warhammer content. It is nice to have your favourite content creator cover the new hotness but it's not really realistic considering the general opinion of Western audiences on 3K.
Those Repeater Crossbows are great on the flank. One unit of them brought in 350 kills in one battle just getting shots in on the back of the infantry line.
But they have trash range and low AP? Over all garbage unit imo
Hold up, hold up - Ma Teng in Gongsun Zan's court at turn 29? How did you...
Please do some more 3K saving your disaster campaigns!
I'm just shocked that LoTW wasn't repulsed by the lack of wall in the siege battles. I know there are towers and choke points, but still its not a real wall.
You get walls once the settlement reaches lvl 4 iirc
Why are your unit sizes so large? My cavalry units for example have 10 men
Great stuff! Really enjoyed your crossover with majorkill too 👌👍
Clicks zhao yun and says "this guy" 😂 I love legend, he'll learn in the later chapter dlcs when zhao yun is a top general in liu beis army that he's a beast on the battlefield 😊
Don't know if this has been covered already but will there be a series playthrough of 3 Kingdoms? I'm waiting to buy it until I see you play it through, your review was great but I wanna see it played before I buy it by someone I trust to play it.
The stamina in forcemarch and the bonus from experience sounds nice...

i saw this and was like wtf
Of fucking course the first 3k disaster is Gongsun Zan. His start is ridiculously difficult against the god tier Yuan Shao. Put the faction that can field the most armies in the early game right in the only path of the faction with the worst early game income and food economy. God damn, I swear I had to restart Gongsun Zan 3 times
Wtf, the AI killed my general after he won the duel and my archers were definitelly out of range. I was like wtf you dishonourable cowards.
repeating crossbowmen gives a debuff to the enemy unit being targeted.
I'd be really interested in seeing a campaign from you on 3 Kingdoms. Maybe you could even play Records mode?
I know you will do what you what to do but it was a good video, it may not get the views of a live steam but it was good seeing different tactics for a change. Shame the combat was on normal.
RIP Tian Kai, you won't be missed
Hey Legend! Is beter to change the unit than disband it. Becouse the unit will keep their numbres. In march stance you cant do it, just wait a turn and change to keep the unit numbers.
You're review of 3k changed my mind on the game. I hope you eventually do end up playing it on stream from time to time.
Why didn't he let the timer run out in the iron mine battle? It would have forced a draw and the settlement would still be his.
First of all I completely support showing new content on this channel Im a fan of war hammer but im burnt out watching it for a minute. As for the second I dont know how that is a trash army other than the trebuchet which is not needed you could kill any stack with that an army can be all ji militia and as long as its got horses win always win
Hey Legend, I find that payment over time usually gives a lot more money in the long run. Like they're willing to give you 3000 gold immediately or 700 gold over 10 turns, thoughts on that?
Cool to see that cavalry have a place in 3k
Finallly, what we were all waiting.
i got a difficult one for you...not sure how to get you my save... i have money, food a decent army..... but im on like turn 140-150, Song and Wu have declared being emperors and im only a dutchy. i have no clue how imma catch up considering everyone is vassal under wu and song and if i attack any of them they all come at me.... all my capitals i cant keep up with the population, cant keep up with upgrades... im just fallin too far behind.. it is my first playthru so i didnt really understand everything i do know so next playthru should be alot quicker but yeah this one is pretty screwed i think. well at least for someone not as experienced, ive played my fair share of total war but still learning
I have a problem with corruption. I am playing at easy.
I control most of south as Sun Jian and my corruption level is at 44%. (current income is 3k. if I sell rice, I can reach 4.5k)
I only have 4 army stacks.
I have 2 cities that generate 80% of my income.
1) What should build on those 4-5 slots as staple buildings for those money making cities?
2) What reforms should i prioritize 1-50 turns and 50-100 turns?
3) Is it better to stay with a few well built commanderies than conquering all?
4) What about the special resource? How can I get them if they dont want to trade with me and its way beyond my border?
How did Ma Teng came to Gongsun Zan?
his faction dies on turn 3
his faction is destroyed by Gong Du, most likely. He and Zheng Jiang currently are the most frequent roaming faction leaders due to harsh starting position
Towards the beginning. You could have just standard marched your troops to that iron mine and had tons of archers and artillery there to support against Yuan Shao not trying to critique, just a thought you wouldn’t have had to attack them the next round around.
I guess repeater crossbows would be good in chokepoints mostly. Very situational.
Can you not use a night battle on settlements, cause were happy he could do that but when you went for the settlement to retake it you forgot it?
I thought you said in your review that the ranged units will not fire at small target? Guess that wasn't true all the time.
I have some tips for newcomers in terms of battle:
+ When facing multiple enemies, you can either ambush or encamp. IMO, if your army consists of mainly archers and units with shield, try to encamp. The main reason is that encamp give you siege tower. If they counter you by fire arrows: use your archers to take out their archers before your tower is set on fire. Usually, the enemy with overwhelming number will split up into multiple forces, if one force only has 1 ranged unit, don't worry and use both of your towers to take that single unit out.
Ambush is better with an army that mainly has cavalry (6-7 including generals) and assaults unit.
+ When defending with siege tower, try to place your infantry a little bit further behind the siege tower to avoid getting shot by arrow too soon. Also, when they get a little bit close to the tower, charge out and block their path, they cannot sneak through and compete for the tower with you. Do this and you can defend the checkpoint until your man broke.
ranged units fire on single targets on hard and below difficulty. they don't not on very hard and legendary
trungfat51 are encamps like forts in real battles? That’s really a good tip.
@@lorrieboy007 sorry but do you not see his gameplay here? They clearly do on legendary?
@@aminsrour3887 Basically they are like fort, but the walls are made of wood so fire arrow is your worst nightmare.

If you executed the general with the red armour you would have the the armour that is more money if sell it than the 400 gold by let him free...and if you peace out with Han Fu by putting all those armour that you had then it will be very easy to concentrate on Yuan Shao and Zhang Yan....you should use all the options of this game and not think like in past total war titles that don't have so many possibilities in diplomacy...
