I saw the number of generals and I was like “yeah legend will win this in 5 minutes”
'Gauls are probably planning to attack because they send a guy asking if we want to be friends' is probably the most Roman thing anyone can say.
The first battle seems like it came from an alternate episode of Roman history. A powerful and populist Julian faction uses a large and sympathetic force of plebs and proles to assault Rome itself. The city is defended by a few loyal veterans and the city's equestrian elites who rally out in an all or nothing gamble to defend their position against the ambitions of the Julii.
Michael Clerque Tababa and in this case killed the leader and forced the enemy into retreat.

Good to know Im not the only one who still enjoys a classic. Total war games have a lot of replay value after all these years.
I thought I was the only one who suddenly felt the urge to play it after a while. I have R1 and M2 tens of times already.

Medieval 2 and Rome 1 are the peak of Total War. I can't enjoy playing the new ones
@@ericmolloy2319 New ones are too slow. Even Shogun 2 basically forces you to chill out and research everything before you risk it.
Not to mention that getting honor (yes please) is basically punished by increasing realm divide progress.
Eric Molloy I love total war but they cut corners in the newer ones. Visually they are outstanding. But The sieges in warhammer are somewhat shameful compared to the ones in Barbarian Invasion. Getting overwhelmed but hordes of Huns, Goths, and Franks in the thousands. Im talking 3 waves of 3,000 a piece surrounding your city. It really felt like it was a war. I recreated the Battle of Thermopylae once It took me 3 hours and I loved it.

If i remember correctly when you play as SPQR the other roman factions will attack you within the first few turns, you don't have the popularity immunity like in a normal campaign
Yeah, which is why I was surprised Legend thought it strange the civil war was that early... Until he said he never played as the SPQR. That itself kind of is surprising to me though. I do prefer going as another Roman family though, because the senate dynamic wasn't meant for the SPQR faction quite as well, among other bugs.
You can edit files to make spqr winnable
Legend, as the SPQR public order does not factor in so you can go full red its the same as playing as slaves and rebels
so only lower it if you want max growth since no one will rebel

@@pepsi914 kinda .. as for med 2 i don't know. But yes the fact that public order does not matter if your rebels is indeed a op thing.
If I recall correctly you can get crashes as SPQR if you look into the Senate ranking screen. That or it used to do it to me back when I tried to play as them.

I love your remark about generals and battles. And the battle you used as an example is a great one. Reason being, that the Army from Normandy took a huge moral blow when rumors spread that Duke William of Normandy had died in battle. William knew just how devastating this rumor was and quickly made his presence known so that his troops wouldn't lose the will to fight. In the same battle the deaths of a few key players on the Saxons side helped to swing the battle in the favor of the Norman Duke. Once a few of Harolds commanding officers died in the battle the ill experienced levies started making big mistakes that resulted in large casualties they could not afford. The final nail in the coffin was the death of King Harold that resulted in a mass rout.
Fun fact: Harold Hadrada served as a mercenary in the Roman army and saved up wealth to take back Denmark

You know what I've just realized. I've never seen the City of Rome itself. I played Rome: Total War on a low end computer, and couldn't fight in large city battles, so Ive never fought in rome.
I'm not the one who sent this in but I thank you nontheless purely for making this series. It's just amazing and I am watching every single one of the episodes

This reminds me of the one time i got the civil war super early, Started as Scipii, refused to do senate missions, was developing up in a different way, wanted Carthage to grow and provide and challange, and then they (SPQR) somehow declared war on me because of my faction leader(starting faction leader, was that early) was a traitor or something to due with ignoring the missions.
Won the civil war, but kind of ruined the campaign as i had no challenging end game to look forward to, so i restarted and i've always done the senate missions whenever possible since.
28:00 the point when LOTW says "medieval 2 is basically the same game" I remember how in that game the text files contain something like marian_reforms = false lmao. Funny how legacy code works sometimes

The SPQR is completely playable but you have to watch out for CTDs. They will occur if you click on the Senate tab or the Senate offices button. It's a real good idea to take lots of saves when playing as SPQR because of this.
the spqr can declare war on the other roman factions so he probably tried to take italy early on and lost

The main problem with the scenario is not having any temple options in the construction browser. Inconvenience, at any rate, because that's a nasty public order deficit without temples. Wardogs also have unlimited morale, once released.

we've been doing this for such a long time, 1500 years before the decline of rome the world was in a similar state. maybe 1500 years in the future we'll have learnt a lesson by then

I didnt know you could actually play as SPQR. It used to crash the game when starting the imperial campaign.
You don't need to worry about SPQR with order in towns / cities . Because they can't have uprising
Really? That's amazing. Although you can maintain public order with a troop of peasants usually. I hate paying upkeep on babysitters.

That was the first time I ever saw you pause a battle... seemed kinda weird.

Yeah, but SPQR is not playable, and therefore bugged. Crashing on Senate tab, No revolts, and you get mobbed by the other Romans in the first few turns. Also, no missions, and apparently, you can't win the campaign even if you take over the world, because Roman victory conditions are to eliminate SPQR.

How long has it been since Legend played RTW 1?
Having several generals in an army is kinda cheesy tactics. Game sort of expects you to have one family member per army and the rest of them serving as governors. You can tell that by how OP general bodyguards are and how many city management traits and retinue exist in the game. Sure you are justified to throw all of them on the battlefield in situation like this but running around with armies of half a dozen generals that can overpower up to a full stack at any point of the game is very ambiguous.
I mean, if you play the game as intended (leaving settlements on auto manage unless you have a general there. Then that in itself is enough incentive to keep governors in all important territories.
This one is not disaster as last one, campaing with Moors and Lithuania are really fucked

SPQR is a difficult start being surrounded by untrustworthy neighbors and only having one province
You're surrounded by allies, this guy triggered a civil war at quite possibly the worst time. Besides, whilst having a single settlement doesn't make things easy, it's manageable if you play your cards right and since the SPQR is insulated from its enemies by other Romans the threat to Rome is minimal. This guy either seriously messed up or did this on purpose.
have you played SPQR before? they're quite untrustworthy allies and will usually attack you after some turns.
@@khorps4756 yeah I have and I can't say that was my experience. By the time they attacked me I was already too powerful for them to do anything, so all things considered it's one of the easier campaigns.

If you have many generals in an Army do the injuries of the non-leaders affect morale? Also, Cavalry when properly managed is a joy to watch. You get to see how outmatched infantry is against Cavalry's mobility. So Roman legion vs. Horse nomad :)

How do you play Rome total war 1 bc I try and it’s really laggy and shit btw I got a really good pc
the game only uses 1 core to run the game. There are ways to make it run better, just look on google.
I've heard there are issues with running older TW games on Windows 10,so if you're using that then it might be your issue
