You take the most complicated things (for me!) and make them easy. You are a phenomenal teacher and I thank you for doing these videos
oh my gosh - i've been trying to sort this out for awhile by adding black or grey, with no luck. THANK YOU!
Brilliant technical lesson - who knew we had so many “hidden” colours?! Big thanks 👏
Thank you for explaining that. I’m trying to learn new things while sheltering in place, and I was getting frustrated trying to find colors that were kind of gentle, but not pastel or merely a lighter shade of bright. Thanks again!
Such a beautiful painting! 🌸❤️ I always love those muted, dusky tones.
you just made this so easier to understand!! Thank you for your time
Thank you so much for this helpful video. I have struggled to mix colors but now with your help I feel more confident
This helped me SO much! I had not known about mixing complimentary colors like that before and thought I might need to buy more colors. Now I know how to create all kinds of beautiful colors from my palette! Thank you! I'm so glad to have found you.
I am So happy to have found you are tutorials. There aren’t many out there on color matching, just on color mixing. I watched your skin tone tutorial it was fabulous. I have been trying to replicate the work of Edward Hopper, and they are muted and I was not sure how to get those muted tones, and you showed me in this tutorial. Thank you very much.
Thank you for keeping this simple and straight to the point. Clear, conscise and easy to see ! Ty, so helpful !!!💖
the painting with the muted tones is sooo pretty!!
i think this is such a helpful video --- one of the best things I did when I was just starting out is playing around with color mixing...
I was a complete super newbie but I was surprised how it didn't take too long before it becomes natural and easier to get so much range out of the colors I had.
You did such a great job showing and explaining the process... very helpful!!
Diane, I got and get SO excited mixing colors, but I fail to write down the recipes since I'm "practicing."
Frances Turano i totally know what you mean!! just keep playing with the colors --- it'll start becoming more natural as you practice more, even if you don't write it down -- just talk through out loud what you are doing to be mindful and attentive. Have you done a mixing chart yet?
I was searching for how to get muted tones for airbrushing my next Gunpla project and this was exactly what I needed. This was incredibly well done, thank you!
Excellent to the point. Quick. Informative. Helpful. Thanks.
Thank you so much Emma! I love these type of lessons you give. I feel I need to go over the color wheel more often - I am realizing that I'm not as familiar with the complimentary colors and secondary colors as I thought I was lol. I am so glad your showing us this - I need to take the time to practice color mixing more often!! 😊
when selecting watercolours we were told "artistic grade give vibrant colour"
But when painting we use muted colours to be more "realistic"
but at least you can do more with the artistic grade paints. Can't create vibrant colors out of colors that are muted to start with, right?
I have student grade paints that are equally vibrant. They're not chalky at all. The colors behave with the same transparency, granulation, staining, tinting strength/chroma, charging, glazing, etc. as much as my higher end brands. I read through Amazon reviews for every cheap brand until I found a few that exceeded their cost. I was so happy to see that you don't always have to break the bank to play with good quality watercolors! Schpirrer Farben, Kuretake, Gotideal, Gencrafts, Lukas, etc. all offer pan sets that are great for beginners but still provide all the characteristics needed to learn how watercolor properly behaves.
@@annanabil73 Royal Talens student grade Van Gogh are also pretty impressive. Quite a few of their paints are identical to their professional grade called Rembrandt. Lukas' professional range is probably cheaper than most student ranges too, big big tubes of paint. It really depends on where you decide to spend your money. Kuretaki aren't watercolours in the strictest sense, they have different ingredients to what we use in the west so they're vibrant for a different reason. But yeah, there are plenty of great student grade ranges out there, you just have to be willing to do some digging. I think most people just assume that any set in a plastic box is immediately the student range and some of them are very disappointing and low quality and it can put a lot of people off. There's also the problem that many people feel that the good ones are "too expensive for a child/student" but you'll find it much more difficult to learn with poor quality supplies.
Very practical video. You are a great teacher. Took your advice about Princeton Snaps and bought my first one in size 12. Looking forward to using it on this exercise. Thank you for posting this lesson on complements.
I really need to play with my paint more 🤦🏽♀️ , it makes me so happy 😁 !
Thank you!!!
I’m hand painting Christmas ornaments muted Shane‘s and after much trial and error last weekend, this made the concept so much simpler🙏🤗
I loved this video. Muted tones look always more natural but beginners tend not to use them because do not know how to do it. Thanks.
Love this video , I like mixing colors to get what I need
Thank you a million times!!! This helped me soooo much! Thanks for making it simple for those of us who are new to painting ❤️
Really enjoyed this one! Color blending is a bit overwhelming and I appreciate such a good breakdown. Looking forward to practicing!
As always, you help me as a struggling beginning artist. You make it so simple to my brain. Nice small, absorbable steps to use. Thank you so much. You are a fantastic teacher. Can’t stress how much I love your tutorials.
Great lesson. Good thing to do when you don't think you can paint, or when you're stuck on what to paint or how to paint something. Thank you again for sharing your time, talent and inspiration. Think I'll go play with W&N.
Very useful and clear, I’m going to try this.
I just started painting yesterday and this is SO helpful. I was so frustrated with colors and I will definitely practice this!! Thanks so much! Love your channel !
I just read Pat Moreheads comment, I TOTALLY AGREE!! Thanks for jumping right into this and keeping it simple! Great video, I’d love to see more just like this!! Liz😊💗👍🏼
👏👏👏. Again thank you Emma! Great lesson. Looking for someone to teach this to me in a way that makes sense and so much easier to understand! You are wonderful at teaching!
simple seemingly, but easily overlooked and forgotten. Thanks for the great demonstration!
I absolutely loved this video, I am so into muted tones and by watching your videos I got my motivation back to start off by buying some good quality primary colors (cmy, as I found out in another video) and create art without spending too much money on supplies
This was a perfect little lesson- thank you for making it short and sweet!
Love it! I can’t wait to try mixing some colors. I particularly love the fall colors.
Very helpful! Loved the floral you did!❤
Love to play with colors. This is totally engaging and helpful.
This video makes me so excited! Thank you for sharing. I was struggling with trying to make muted colors!
Emma, this was such a helpful tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing! ♥️
Great video! You do a nice job taking the mystery out of color mixing with complimentary colors. Could you also do a lesson explaining analogous colors and how to best to use them. You've inspired me to get back into watercolor. You do lovely work. Thank you!
I remember the first time you taught us about sap green mixed with purple. So fun to blend and discover colors! This video was super. Thanks!
I just did my very first watercolor painting yesterday - and someone suggested that you were THE ONE to watch on UA-cam! :) This explained so much to me, and was so easy and fun to watch. Thank you! :) I love your channel. New subscriber. :)

Loved it
This was VERY helpful!!
Very informative, thank you!
Thanks, that helps a lot with coloring my hair!
I like my blue hair but I want it to be more of a dusty silvery blue. Instead of buying that color from an overpriced brand I can just mix a little orange into the blue and save money.
Loved
this video was very interest and helpfull, thanks.
Very informative... Though ur posts r underrated
Great tutorial!!!!
Emma, I have a question that has confounded me for TWO years! HOW do you differentiate between warm & cool colors? I have zero instincts about whether a color is warm/cool. How on earth do I figure that out??? Thanks, Emma! :)
Frances Turano (Fanna)
Denver, CO
Blue is cool, and bluegreens. Red and yellow are warm. Think fire and ice!
This is the video that helped me out

I found this because i'm doing art class and i need to have muted colors in my project.
My biggest struggles are perspective when drawing realistic flowers and leaves.
sometimes i dont know how to get muted colours in digital, got tips becuz im dumb when it comes to colouring ;-;
Couldn't quite follow. None of them worked. Wish you could do mixing with basic colours only you suggested we should have. Ultramarine, cadmium red, ultramarine ..
👍👍👍🥰🇩🇰
