Pete (from the south of England) It would never have occurred to me to use one colour from my palette as a starting point! 79 years old and still learning! Thank you so much Emma.
Great tutorial! This color strategy was so helpful. One of my problems is that when I finally mix just the right color, I invariably don't mix enough of it, and then I can't quite replicate it.
Normally when people say 'work on color theory' my eyes roll and my head hurts, sort of as if they told me to work on algebra or something....BUT, I had just watched your video on 3 things to improve you painting, and this color mixing one popped up and I thought I'd try it...and it was awesome :) it was less talking and more doing and using the flower petals and leaves to match, it somehow made it even easier to start to grasp without melting my brain ;) it was great! Thanks a ton!!
I came back to this upon receiving a 16-well mont marte as a gift, and it really helped me trim down my usual selection. I DID add a few colours so I could mix some tones I regularly use but that's just a me thing.
Excellent tutorial. A terminology note from a fellow art teacher: colors opposite on the color wheel are known as "complementary" colors. They do contrast, but that is a descriptive rather than the technical term.
I have been watching a lot of color mixing videos and even if I initially always think I’ve got it, something happened along the way that made me ‘drop the ball’ 🤪. After the videos I’ve been even more confused than before I did watch them. I think it’s because the videos are jam packed with information which is good if you aren’t starting from zero 🥴. This video is AMAZING, easy enough for a beginner to have somewhere to start and still some information about the basic color mixing theory! You, miss Emma, did this really good 🥰. Thanks! Can’t wait to start implementing this into practical flower color studies in my watercolor sketchbook! 😀
Hi Emma, I have recently discovered your tutorials and am so happy with all of them. I have been looking at color mixing instructions and videos for years without being able to grasp it. Your mixing tutorials are it! I am finally having success. Thank you so very much.
Thank you! This is an excellent lesson for those new to colors/mixing/matching. I realized a while ago that red and blue don’t always make the purple I want (cool red? Warm red?) and it can be frustrating for beginners. Having a color chart at hand helps to back up a bit, understand where a color “came from” and to figure out the right colors needed for your project. Your videos are not only helpful, but clear and easy to follow and always inspiring. Again, thanks!
Emma🌷 Thank you so much for your explicit instructions on knowing the color wheel. You are a excellent teacher and instructor. I appreciate you and your knowledge and your simple explanation. I also must mention how I love your new introduction to your tutorials. It is classy and suits you just fine. You were asking about ideas for future tutorials. Well, do you paint churches or cottages with a garden of flowers? Or a basket of flowers, a entrance way of pots of flowers. Or showing how to paint more flowers realistically. You have a blessed day❣️as you have blessed me watching you paint.
Thank you so much for this video. Im pretty sure we all know what primary colors make secondary colors but once it goes past that it gets a bit more complicated, at least for me anyway. This made it so much easier for me and actually able to see the undertones and where to go from there. Thank for your videos and time you put into them its greatly appreciated! Have a wonderful day!
Hi from Sicily!!! Me and my nephews love this video, and the one of the color wheel!it's kind of magic!thank you for all your videos! very interesting!we're learning a lot!
I taught art for a couple of years a while ago. I LOVE art. Yet you still helped a lot when it came to watercolors that I am new to. THANKS EMMA!!!!! Fabulous!
Well, I cant wait to try my hand at this. This was such a important and helpful video. Thank you so much Emma, I appreciate this very much, have learned alot and cant wait to try it out.
This video is so useful. I knew about adding water to make a lighter colour value but didn't know about using the contrasting colour to create different tones. Thanks so much for sharing. Excited to try colour matching with my watercolours.
I love this! Fantastic colour theory lessons. This makes me want to geek out and go grab my Johannes Ittean colour theory book from when I was in art school. Perfect Emma!
Good morning 👋😊 Emma totally awesome lesson today Thank You so much as I am new to watercolour painting for less than 5 mths stay safe and be careful 🙏🖌️🎨💌🌹👋☺️ enjoy your week 👍
Emily! this was such a helpful video. I struggle a bit with mixing colors and your explanation was so easy to understand. Loved how you used actual petals/leaves, and showed us your paint palette. Thank you!!
Love this video so much! I would watch you color match every day if I could! Your voice and the simple palette you use, and the way you focus on the painting rather than the expensive tools is soooo fresh !
I have been looking for this exact video & the information it contains for a while so THANK YOU for making it. I’ve had limited success mixing colors since I’m quite new to watercolor, so the way you break all of this information down is invaluable for me! Again, thank you. And have a Merry Christmas!

I’m learning that patience is required to get a great match. Thanks for demonstrating that even seasoned artists take the time to get it right.
