Everybody was engaged entertaining and laughing and then he fell needed and wanted to interject as if he was now just as important. I remember thinking about the Big Bang being a cyclical event when I was pretty young. It made more sense than anything. Essentially after the universe falls back into itself (or it gets so cold everything dies), the amount of energy compacts until it creates another Big Bang, etc....... no beginning & no end.
Do NOT let Chuck fool you. He's been hanging around NDT for a while now, and it's rubbed off in a big way. Chuck may not have advanced degrees, but he is NO FOOL. He's a smart guy. ~34:48 Greene is answering the question as if it was: "according to understood physics principles, does free-will exist?" whereas, and he actually began to touch on a reasonable answer, the real question was: "what does physics have to say about free will?" the difference in implications are, to me, the former excludes any notion of our perception on the outcome, while the second allows Greene to answer with an element of subjectivity and to bring in aspects of general-opinion. (people tend to believe they have free-will). In his answer, Dr. Greene brought up the topic of the superposition of electrons. He could have mentioned that when observing a body moving through space it only resides in one given location, despite occupying a 'field' (like an electron), and that a rational individual occupies a 'field' of uncertainty before making a decision. The time-location before a decision is made could be seen as the arrival of all the previous decisions and subsequent outcomes at that location. Then, when attempting to determine what decision has been made by an individual, as humans and/or neutral observers, we cannot know the specifics of that choice until after it had been chosen. To elaborate, other people cannot 'see' our thoughts, but they can infer what kinds of decisions we make by observing our actions, and through this observation can come to an understanding of what decision was made. If you put a dollar on the ground, and watch someone approach it; you cannot determine if they will pick it up or walk past it unless you observe one of those behaviors as it happens. The scenario in which this person has to decide is the superposition 'field' of the electron, with a notable 3rd alternative; not seeing the dollar on the ground. To pick it up would be one position, to ignore it would be another, and the final is walking past the dollar bill. However, the demonstration of this decision-making cannot occur until the person acts, at which point you have observed and identified where the electron is in its 'field'. Free-will then would be the ability to act independently of the knowledge of a superposition despite residing securely within it. The individual still maintains a forward trajectory through time, the motions of this body can be traced when looking back, and also predicted when looking forward, however, the knowledge of what decision 'will' be made, in the immediate future, cannot be definitively stated until the system is observed and not in-motion. To summarize my point, a decision is like an electron, both reside in a 'field' of uncertainty. The position of the electron and the outcome of deliberation (decision) cannot be certain until the system is paused after some amount of running-time. The decision has its requirements regardless of the individual (pick up the bill, don't pick it up, or fail to see it), and the electron generally occupies the entire 'field' unless observed. Free-will is the ability to act independently of the knowledge of a superposition, while still under the influence of all previous decisions and forces, and the metaperspective of the decision is being able to determine which choice was made and to an extent why it was made. (the electron interacts with the forces of the atom, and at different points of time, t, can be said to occupy a given space, allowing for prediction on future positions). All possibilities exist until the decision is made, then they disappear and the system is observed as it has acted. Neil "wanted" a burger because of his nature and the nurturing he received which developed his taste-preferences. My analysis is flawed and incomplete, but it is an attempt at rationalizing the concept of Free-Will in relation to Physics despite the scientists' postulation that Free-Will is fictional.
So free will basically means what you choose, without having any knowledge of what choices you have at that instant? Did I understand what you wrote there correctly? If I did I feel it's a really good point . Should have had way more likes.
To me the limitations caused by environmental conditioning and the physical limitations imply that we have freedom of choices but not actual free will. Even if we cant think all thoughts at all time implies that we merely have choice not free will. Its kind of a worthless mental masturbation question, if you can than you can, choose and try is what counts
@@elroydsouza7196 This is where my argument begins to fall apart. Humans do not always deliberate on every path-divergence, but they have the potential to do so. As far as we know, electrons have no consciousness, or even awareness of anything. So they cannot perceive they are in a 'field' of uncertainty. Whereas a human can choose a path of deliberation, the electron simply moves through space under the constraints of universal laws of physics. This gets into what @James Lee mentioned, humans 'could' think about every possibility, but it is neither practical nor truly possible due to the time it would take for every 'option.' This is why I attempted to define Free-Will as the ability to act independently of the knowledge of a superposition, while securely residing within it because humans 'make decisions' all the time, without actually deliberating beyond instinctual desires or habits. That being said, they do have the potential to decide. Being able to 'decide' does not remove the rational being from the field of uncertainty, which might be why the notion of "Free"-Will is rejected, because we do not know the metaphysics of consciousness in the same way we do universal laws of physics and can therefore not establish a method for determining what actually makes our Will our own and independent of these external/universal forces. But at the same time, the presence of rational thought and the ability to act 'independently' is not absent from humans either, like it is in electrons. So I would argue that this baseline consciousness is what elevates us beyond simple particles of matter. Even if our path is guided like water in an aqueduct, the individual water molecules do not all follow a single path. They are guided by the constraints of the walls of the aqueduct. The temperature of the water and surrounding environment affects how fast the water flows and how far apart the molecules are, the width of the aqueduct also controls rate of flow. But unlike water molecules, humans have an element of responsibility to their environment and the forces that act on them. When water gets to hot, it evaporates, when a human gets hot it sweats. But the human also has the potential to realize they need to seek out shade or drink more water to cool off. The water simply follows a cycle of precipitation and evaporation. Yes, we are predisposed to follow a certain path, guided by universal forces, but that path is not set in stone (or concrete, as in the duct).
Excellent discussion, Conrad jayne. I love the way you compare the human to the electron to make your points. This was really eye opening. If you ever refine your idea and make a video about it I'd really like to see it! And even your casually made point that 'as far a we know electrons have no consciousness' is gonna keep me up at night now wondering...but what if??! Also, you should check out Mark Passio discussing Free Will. His videos are on YT. His discussion of Natural Law is great too. He doesn't discuss Free Will from a physics perspective; but from a moral one. It's really interesting; as I think this aspect of free will is also important to explore. Check him out. Anyway, great points you made. And thanks for the visualization.

Joe Horn yes it was delayed because of sexual harassment reports against Tyson. This is true. But he was found innocent and now they are working on the show again
Thanks!
This gives the concept of "the best thing since sliced bread" a whole new level of difficulty.
Oh dude, this format is definitely a brain toaster. Gets the creative juices flowing.
The distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.

Neil's sidekick is funny but he interrupts when Brian or Neil are talking about something really interesting and serious.
Yeah, these are a bit too juvenile trying to pan to the common folk. Laughs are great but it's not why i come here.
@@RandomPlaceHolderName you may want to find another show then, Neil is adamant about the inclusion of comedy in StarTalk
But Neil is the worst of all on the things I have watched
He is brought in for some comedic timing on big brain issues. But hes only needed if it's not entertaining. Everybody was engaged entertaining and laughing and then he fell needed and wanted to interject as if he was now just as important. He just doesn't quite have his timing down on when to help and when to shut up.
I believe that is the intention though, he wants these talks to be both informative and entertaining to keep the average person watching. I agree it can be excessive at times, but in general I think it keeps a nice balance.
Sasha Cohen is eminently entertaining. Humble, smart and knows how to visualize her sport. Love that she was there

Brian Greene is studying string theory and is trying really hard to prove it. Neil usually jokes about Brian still not proving it. That joke was meant to insinuate that he’s gonna prove it soon
Chuck and Neil are so funny together! You guys make learning so fun
Just awesome to watch. Loved the combo with a look into the Sports science of figure skating...as a sports enthusiast, I will definitely look out for another startalk episode where the science of sport is broken down. Thank you
I remember thinking about the Big Bang being a cyclical event when I was pretty young. It made more sense than anything.
Essentially after the universe falls back into itself (or it gets so cold everything dies), the amount of energy compacts until it creates another Big Bang, etc.......
no beginning & no end.
I had a 2min ad with chris hadfield and i watched it because hell yea atronauts ads.
Do NOT let Chuck fool you. He's been hanging around NDT for a while now, and it's rubbed off in a big way. Chuck may not have advanced degrees, but he is NO FOOL. He's a smart guy. Probably one of the few comedians who could go into a room full of scientists and actually get them to laugh at stuff THEY STUDIED IN SCHOOL. Well done, Chuck :)
I love Brian and Neil. They make the mind-boggling aspects of the universe digestible for the average guy like me
Thanks
Man Chuck is HILARIOUS!!!!
Im gonna be so sad when Neil dies, he's such a great man

I mean, to me at least, too many hypothesis and for the 35+ years of working on this theory, where is the information.

It would’ve been boring if they didn’t.
I want Neil and Chuck to watch season 5 Episode 1 of Black Mirror together.
I'm only 12 minutes in and this is some of Chuck's best work, and I'm a fan. No shade intended.
My favorite part of these episodes is it truly shows the amount of knowledge comedians have. Not only with timing but adding jokes in these larger discussions shows just what a wide range comedians have knowledge in
Star Talk is growing quickly! I just hope they don't follow the entertainment side too much and keep the science as the main focus.
~34:48 Greene is answering the question as if it was: "according to understood physics principles, does free-will exist?"
whereas, and he actually began to touch on a reasonable answer, the real question was: "what does physics have to say about free will?"
the difference in implications are, to me, the former excludes any notion of our perception on the outcome, while the second allows Greene to answer with an element of subjectivity and to bring in aspects of general-opinion.
This gets into what @James Lee mentioned, humans 'could' think about every possibility, but it is neither practical nor truly possible due to the time it would take for every 'option.'
This is why I attempted to define Free-Will as the ability to act independently of the knowledge of a superposition, while securely residing within it because humans 'make decisions' all the time, without actually deliberating beyond instinctual desires or habits.
@@whatabouttheearth what is your distinction between freedom of choice and free will? those seem almost identical to me.
