I spent a lot of time thinking "Why a budgie? Why not something warm and soft and snuggly like a dog or a cat or even a gerbil or a ferret?" But then I thought about him letting his budgie out of the little birdcage and watching it fly around his plexiglass container and the sense of joy he'd feel in that small moment of giving that budgie some freedom in comparison to the tiny birdcage he was kept in. That's utterly heartbreaking.

My late Aunty Pat was taken into Nazareth House in Newcastle when she was a toddler as her mother died during WW2. Her siblings, including my father had been evacuated to the country. She never forgot the awful things that were done to her in those formative years and to her dying day, had a complete aversion to even the mere mention of the order of Poor Clares. Scandalous! 😡

The fact that they wouldn't let him have a pet. I stay alone with my dog and even though I live in the suburbs of Cape Town, but I just prefer my dog's company to that of people. When Basil had to be euthanised on the 20th of March, the sudden loneliness made me feel as if I was about to either lose my mind or end my life. I was going to adopt another dog because I'm a bit of an "adopt - don't shop" person when it comes to dogs. But on the 30th of March a very dear friend presented me with a baby Jack Russell.
His name is Eddie and he is nothing like Basil, but every time when I get a new dog I don't compare them to the one who I still miss terribly and whose lifespan is so much shorter than mine. But Eddie is growing into a very handsome little specimen and although he is definitely a handful (having always adopted older rescue dogs, this is my first experience raising a puppy.)
Someone said that raising a puppy also allows one to reparent yourselfand I'm very much aware of the constant weighing of whether I should be strict so that he has good manners and will be welcome where-ever we may go in life, but on the other hand I don't at all enjoy when I have to talk to him in a stern voice. I think I may have erred a bit towards the side of not being strict enough because he is the cheekiest little specimenand although he is fully grown now, his mind and his face is still that of a puppy.
He literally saved my life. To force someone into total solitude is indeed cruel and unusual punishment. I know how lost I felt during those ten days after Basil left and until I was given a tiny little bundle of adorable cuteness.

Yup in no way condone or can really understand why he did the things he did, but this is inhumane. Even if he's beyond redemption and should never be released he shouldn't be treated like an animal that PETA would be protesting about. I grew up in Ireland, so as soon as Emma got to the word “nuns” , I shuddered. My stepmother and my ex mother in law were raised in childrens homes run by the nuns. You don’t often see them walking around over here in the Uk , but on the odd occasion I see one my stomach clenches up. My stepmother and my ex mum in law went through hell and carried it through their lives . I just can’t see how anyone can come out the other side of growing up in one of those institutions without a skewed view of society and a really poor bunch of coping mechanisms. The sadistic cruelty the nuns were capable of disgusts me. Then to go from that back to a family where abuse is on tap… not ideal foundations for anyone to grow up with .

Hi Emma, I love you content, watch it religiously! When you mentioned the nuns, it chimed my memory. My family came from Canada, and attended what are known as Residential Schools. We’ve known for years what nuns and priests did, but Canada has just began to unearth nearly 10,000 children’s graves from these “schools”. These were government-Catholic ran institutions that forcibly separated indigenous children from their parents and used torture to assimilate them into white, settler society. The trauma and cycles stemming from these places amongst survivors is horrendous, and reminded me heavily of the places you described here, although in England. I also believe they’ve found thousands of graves across Ireland also from similar places.

    • @dougtaylor2803
      @dougtaylor2803 2 роки тому +1

This residential schools show is one of the biggest yet of the many shakedowns the Indians have perpetrated on Canadian taxpayers. These kids died in the residential schools, they were not murdered. To hear some tell it, you would think these kids were victims of homicide. Our idiot Prime Minister has made apologies his primary function, as he is useless for anything else.

    • @janlundberg5924
      @janlundberg5924 2 роки тому +1

And the treatment those indigenous kiddos were subjected to was beyond gruesome. It systematically destroyed them, mind, body and spirit. Thousands of these children, the ones who actually survived, were then released back into the real world. And guess what? These beautiful, spiritual and peaceful indivuals were never the same, not even close.... An entire generation, and then some, were changed forever. So then what happened u ask? Well, these tortured and abused little souls, who grew to b adults and after their release, were expected to just " get on with it." But that didn't happen because, it can't happen when little humans are ripped from a loving home and treated like animals... day after day after day. Subsequently, because of the profound ABUSE they endured, the kids never recovered. Would u? Can u imagine being tortured, beaten and raped ( yes, the boys AND the girls because that would certainly be beneficial) TERRORIZED and THREATENED. They witnessed the deaths of friends and classmates...continuously...for years.
And so, because they suffered so BRUTALLY for way too long and struggled to recover, they continued to suffer. In turn, their children suffered, their grandchildren suffered, their great grandchildren suffered. It's called a cycle. Get it? Can u imagine the level of PTSD?
And most people r barely aware of it. It sickens me. I.L.M.

The fact that I reflect on this man’s entire life, from his young childhood through his entire life, and feel pain in my heart for him, is a GOOD thing. I know the type of society I want to live in. This man never had a chance to be a sane and normal healthy human being. He is a danger to society and a danger to cell mates. But the description of his incarceration does not feel okay. Not at all.

The horrific irony of this case is the authorities probably thought it would not be fair on the budgie to be caged without natural light. Roberts case has bothered me for many years and is a total failure by subsequent Home Secretaries to at least review his case on a regular basis. I am absolutely sure they could have found a place for Robert that not only recognized his basic needs but also kept the general prison population safe. He has been treated like a street dog since the day he was born. Shame.

I worked as an officer at a max security prison, and you definitely hit on something when you suggested his treatment might, in part, be related to the murders he's committed while _inside_ prison. Institutions like this do not like the look of such things happening on their time, and under their authority, and will punish inmates accordingly, if they feel like their precious institution is being made a fool of. I've seen it happen many times.

Another fascinating deep dive Emma, I always look forward to watching your videos. So much empathy and mind blowing attention to detail 😀 A real long shot.. but perhaps you could look into the British serial killer Neville Heath! I was told a story by my gran that when she was in her teens she was on a train home I think from London to Southampton and a very charming man joined her in the train compartment and they got chatting. This man very conveniently was going in the same direction as her once off the train and invited her to share a taxi with him, she agreed. When she arrived at Southampton, her father was unexpected at the station platform to greet her off the train and took her home, the man quickly scarpered. A few weeks later, she saw this man’s face in the newspaper. It was Neville Heath and he had been sentenced to death for murdering two young women. I can’t corroborate this but I trust my gran’s story! Quite literally a ‘sliding doors’ moment! As I may not have existed to write this comment if my gran’s father wasn’t there and she got into a taxi with that man! Anyway sorry for the essay and keep up the good work 😀

Just because he upset the prison guards feelings? They would have come across a lot better if they treated him with a bit of decency. I think he is one of those psychopaths that's made not born.
I think you have to have the seed in your mind so to speak but the abuse he experienced allowed it to grow. If he had grown up with a normal childhood maybe he would have just been a bit troubled.

There has been no attempt to rehabilitate, even if he was not safe enough to be released at any point, him being afforded basic human rights and possibly even released into general prison population one day.

I think I’ve heard of Robert Maudsley briefly. It was nothing like your deep dive into his life. He obviously did horrible things but I don’t believe he was beyond help. I’m not saying he should have ever been released, however, he never should have been put in solitary confinement for all these years. I understand in the very beginning to keep him away from the rest of the prison population. He should have been given therapy sessions and more than likely medication. He could have then been eased back into the prison community. I definitely don’t understand moving him and having him working with someone who was genuinely making progress, only to shut it down without warning and throw him back into the other prison back in solitary confinement. If they think he’s been alone too long to be reintegrated than that’s them admitting they screwed up. I feel the least they can do is let him have a pet, stamps and paper to write to people, a TV, books, music, and other cultural things to help stimulate his mind. I think his punishment falls into cruel and inhumane territory.

Aww you did it Emma! I missed the premiere! Just started watching.
Interesting hearing your take on what happens when one puts like minded and otherwise minded human beings in concrete boxes with bars...
    Together.
    Against their will.
Where things are governed by the legitimate monopoly on violence, like systemically governed by it.
    Like that concept,
Or that power structure doesn’t come from the people who wouldn’t be there if they had a choice, does it?
If they had a choice they wouldn’t be there to participate and it would not be able to exist, surely?
It comes from how it’s run from the top down, inside and out.
Seems like a recipe for something that would make some damn good true crime content anyway...
Definitely learned a few things from you and this episode about this human being and his life.
    Hella screwed up.
I do think that the prison system has broken him beyond the point.
The point of not even knowing how to come back from it.
The establishment did that to him.
And then as he said, was “swept under the carpet”. The issue being him. Being housed with the focus of his hatred?
I think it was important that you did this video.
I am not a fan of secret places...
With over 14+ doors to get to...
And places some people never knew about or thought existed.
I just think that secrecy breeds vice in a lot of cases?
Then, after doing what they did and the damages done... his actions and reactions and their actions and reactions...
Then using that as a reason to sustain the cruel and unusual punishment?
    No pets allowed :s
    I am struggling.
Someone’s dug a really stupid hole here or set a precedent and out did themselves in how far out they went, now no one knows the way back, or if there even is one anymore.
Sad. A. Really sad tale of savagery beyond comprehension.
I would argue that there is a point, where you have completely broken or beaten an animal. Or a man.
It’s mind and spirit, that it will literally just f**king bite the s**t out of you and attack you and anything that looks like you.
Which oddly would actually be just a completely natural reaction, if you had done that to another living creature.
Hella messed up psychology, on the fact he has had to maintain his sanity as best as he can.
And then considering the manner that it could even be vaguely possible given everything that’s happened?
    You can only imagine.
To the point of “yeah I wouldn’t let me out either.”
I don’t think Robert ever really stood a chance within the environment he found himself in. Thanks for bringing some light to this.
A beautifully painted, dark and twisted tale of bad to worse ad infinitum, appreciate your take on it Emma.
    Thanks!
I think that people also need to know that...
The establishment has a subterranean glass coffin.
    That is in use...
And like who knows how many more of these exist? I don’t.
A place where they have kept someone for that long... 40+ years?!
Had you heard of him before this?
And in solitary confinement, no way to die or way out....
And that it is just basically prejudice for the most part?
    Like.
That’s the reason this man is in this subterranean glass coffin and not you or anyone you know.
