Oh man. Sorry to hear how much these injury issues have set you back, Rich. Hopefully you've enough time to get ready for the race and can enjoy the day.
Thanks Mark! I actually still can't quite believe such a stupid accident could affect me like this! I suppose it's equivalent to being attacked with a hammer or something!
Sorry to hear about that Rich. I've had to pull out of a marathon this weekend because of a dodgy knee - frustrating but there'll be plenty more marathons to come
Great to see you running again, I’m sure you’ll still have a good race, even though the time goal seems to be out the window. My prep for the race hasn’t gone to plan either, lots of niggles throughout the training 😩 Hopefully see you down there in the race in a couple of weeks 👍
I'm in the same boat. Training for Brighton was going really well until mid-January when I hurt myself, missed 2 weeks and then took it easy for another 3. Then managed 1 week of half-decent mileage before hurting myself again the following week and had to take another 2 weeks off. All made worse by the fact that while not running I haven't reduced what I eat, so I've also put on about a stone. I'm now contemplating whether to just pull-out and treat the £165 I've spent on this so far as lost, or turn up anyway and run-walk it in 5hrs or whatever. I might try a 20 mile run this weekend at a very slow pace, and if that goes OK I'll book the train tickets.
Oh goodness Shaun I'm sorry to hear about your issues! Sounds like a nightmare! I'm luckier in a sense because I haven't actually injured any of the actual running parts of my body, but of course I've no idea (and am quite anxious) about how I'm going to feel on the day. Perhaps as you suggest, do the 20 miler (or maybe something shorter) and see how you go? I probably won't attempt anything as far as 20 miles now for fear of not recovering but I'll certainly see if I can do something over 20K at the weekend. Best of luck with it and hopefully I'll see you on the day!
Poor pickings from that fridge - a sure sign of the times. I would vote for running the marathon anyway. We can't PB everything. See it as a good training run for future races. Having to adopt this mindset myself as I return from an Achilles induced hiatus.
I guess if there's no food in your fridge you throw it out? That's what I'd do. Thanks Killian - yes you're right about not PBing everything and I think running it however easy I need to will be the thing to do. Oh no, annoying about your own hiatus - is it ok now?
@@TheRichKeeble thanks for asking. It is indeed coming good now after a 5 week running break and lots of internet inspired rehabbing. It's done 30, 40 then 50km across the last three weeks. But I'm going to be putting it through a 30 mile race at the end of April then a 12 hour track run in June. So still some work to do!
@@TheRichKeeble Calderdale Way Ultra, based in Hebden Bridge, is the 30 mile one. It has a ton of elevation gain and loss . Then the Ultra Loop Track Edition is 12 hours running around the athletics track in Wythenshawe Park, South Manchester. Not so many hills on that one!
From personal experience don't run it, see if you can postpone and find another race 1-2 months further along. That way you can concentrate on the recovery and not do more damage trying to cling on to a goal. I got back to the longer distances quite quickly after my injury by walk-running (16-18miles) at first until i could solid run the distance then getting back to 20 milers.
Thanks Michael - sensible advice. I think if I do run it, it will be far slower than my original intended goal. I was thinking of having a break from marathons after this one anyway and focussing on races HM and below
In a similar boat. Was the fitness I’ve ever been a month or so ago then got hit with a chest and sinus infection so I took 2 weeks off. When I came back it started off ok but at the end of an 18km run last weekend I felt a pain in my knee, almost like I had twisted it. Think it’s knee burstitis, so, another 2 weeks or so off running for me.
oh no! Nightmare! Sorry to hear, hope the knee recovers with some rest! Typical when it all happens when you think you're at the top of your game isn't it
Sorry you’ve had such rotten luck with illness and injury (and life more widely being busy). If I was in your shoes I would be tempted to run it still, see how the first 13 miles goes at an easy pace then either carry on or ramp it up if that seems doable. I’ll be there trying to break my 3:53 time from last year so hopefully see you at the finish line!
ah good luck Nick! Hopefully see you there! Yes I will make a final decision closer to the time depending on how well I think this bruising has finally healed!
Really sorry to hear Rich, and I feel your pain. Been training for 2 spring ultras and London marathon for the last 6 months. Ankle started hurting 9 days ago. Not been able to run since. Physio and podiatrist don’t think it is a quick fix. How are you managing, cos I’ll be honest, my last week and a half has felt quite crap. Exercise 0. Food intake 100000
oh no how annoying! Sorry mate it's very frustrating. In terms of managing, to be honest it's been good that I've been busy and work has been picking up, cos that's taken my mind off it. As I've alluded to in the videos I've had this family stuff as well (I haven't gone into too much detail about my mum but she is an absolute nightmare to be honest, making stuff up constantly, which she's always done actually but it seems to have ramped up recently) and I think running would've helped keep me a bit calmer... but it is what it is. Luckily my wife is super encouraging me, and was encouraging me to at least go out for brisk walks (which I didn't do). I wish you all the best Conrad!
Run it slower and actually try and have some fun. Your training block has hit the skids and so the PB is off the table. If you over exert yourself then its going to be quite painful. The best thing to do is go there with no expectations whatsoever, run and try and have a bit of fun . . . The PB can come at the next one! I love how I am asking you to go nice and slow and you will probably do a 4hr time and I am in the 4hr 30m Pink Wave and have no intention of exerting myself . . . My training block has been stead 15-30km a week and no more. Rubbish training block. Would be a result to get to the finish line without prolapsing or twisting my testicles! Good luck everyone and especially Dale . . . !
Thank you Paul, yes provided I feel well enough to at least try and run it I think you're right - just run slower and enjoy it! I'll certainly be filming it and I'm sure the crowds will be great. Maybe I will still try and nudge in under 4 though now you mention it... I'll pass on your regards to Dale, and I wish you the best regarding your testicles!
I'm in the same boat as you, have barely ran for the last 8 weeks due to really bad shins and have never ran further than 30km and I also have the Brighton marathon. Also probably not going to run much between now and then as I want my shins as recovered as possible when I run so I am cycling instead.
oh no Jason, sorry to hear about the shins! I had shin issues a couple of years and actually... I don't do much strength training at all... but I did do some ankle dorsiflexion type things, and some specific yoga stretches for shins, and it did sort me out. Good luck with the recovery!
Yep I'm exactly the same. I am so undertrained rn , my very first marathon and due to me badly managing my injury I will be running Brighton with no long runs or any runs for that matter for a whole month before. Well we may see each other crawling across the finish line 😅. As I haven't set a time for a marathon yet if I have to walk some of it then so be it. Just hoping to finish it. If for some miracle all goes well then a sub 4hr would be great.
Yes you should definitely do Brighton - come join me at the back of the pack! You could pace me to 4:10... Exeter Marathon is 5 weeks after Brighton, so you could consider it a training run, and then PB in Exeter...?
You probably have enough underlying fitness to get round, especially if you can start to build your milage up again over the next few weeks. Just treat it like an Ultra and run walk it (with the runs being at your normal pace, which should be easier than just running slower, since you wont have the conditioning to keep a monotonous pace). Though don't listen to me, I am just another idiot on the internet. Good luck, whatever you decide.
Just do it to prove Garmin wrong! 3 weeks is enough to build to be able to run it, you've had your taper so you don't need another ;) - just enjoy it if you can.
oh no! very frustrating indeed! I actually beat shin splints with specific yoga stretches and some ankle dorsiflexion type strength if that's of any help?
@TheRichKeeble thank you, I must seek those out, first half of the year is in 6 weeks so would like to get back on track as soon as possible. Hope you heal up well
