That last 5km was probably the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life hahaha. I somehow managed to hold on and make my goal of sub 1:30 finishing in 1:29:57, a 21 minute PB! Congrats to you and all the runners up front, amazing running !
Thank you Ben, my running has improved enormously the last 6 months and your vids have played a big part in that. Really appreciate the work you and Sarah do!
You almost broke me when you started tearing up a bit. For a multitude of reasons I had the worst time of my life during these last 2 years and having racing back and all the people enjoying this gives me goosebusmp, and makes me happy. I know how you felt and how you feel because it's been tough, but happy we are enjoying some sort of normalcy again! Great tough work, I hate wind, so I feel that suffering!
This was my first half that wasn’t at the end of a 70.3 (lol), but I’ve been training very consistently and was hoping for 1:38:30 on the day. Didn’t really know what to expect from the wind but I got to 10 mile at 1:14 (a minute ahead) - ended up with 1:39:17. I beat myself up a bit for losing so much time over the last 3.1, but this video has flipped that assessment on its head. Wouldn’t have believed wind could do that. Thanks so much!
Saw your pink gloves whiz past in the opposite direction as I headed up past the marina! Great effort to everyone who ran. That headwind was something else!
I am amazed at the speed. I hope to get even a little closer to that kind of speed. My fastest kilometre is 6:03. I need some work. 😁 Well done on completing the half marathon!
Those headwinds were the exact same for myself in my final miles running the Brighton Marathon in 2019, absolutely make or break material mentally. Well done!! I have to say I couldn't but get emotional with you Ben, it truly is beautiful seeing everyone back to normal and achieving so much! Can't wait to see you getting it done at the Manchester Marathon too. I completed it last October and can't wait to give it another go in years to come! 👍🏼🏃🏻🏅
Great stuff Ben! Amazing to see everyone out there getting it done. I bet it’s a great feeling seeing loads of people out there in your gear too! Saw loads of singlets etc 👌
The Brighton half was my first half marathon since 1996, really enjoyed it, it's a great event. The last 5km were brutal, glad it wasn't just me that thought so. Despite the wind I knocked 5 minutes off my 1996 time!
Spot on Ben, just a blessing to be back taking part in events like this. Many times over the past couple of years I didn’t think we would. So despite the wind I had a fantastic morning, a brilliantly organised and supported event.
Awesome to see you on route, doing what you love! On days like this, time's are never going to be pretty but like you said it's the effort that counts. Great to see and loving the positively! Bring. On. Manchester!
@@BenParkes loser buys the post race treats!! 10 mins it is 👊🏻 see you Sunday mate, looking forward to it! Ps. We’re going to the Bath House pub afterwards for drinks if you’re up for it.
Like you it felt great to be racing again and yes the wind was terrible, I was on for a PB but lost 30seconds a Km over the last 5 km but was still happy with the 1hr30:28. It was great to chat to you and Sarah at the end.
I did the Prestwold half marathon and managed a PB (1:19:08) which has given me a real confidence boost for Manchester! That’s with stopping to tie a shoe lace, and dealing with 2 very windy, but nothing like Brighton, sections of the airfield to compete with.
So awesome! I'm expecting similar feelings at the Marine Corps Marathon in October which became virtual only the past 2 years. It will be great to be around thousands of runners, spectators and volunteers again! Can't wait :)
Got a bit emotional with you there ben. I actually started back running after 20 years away during lockdown but the sight of everyone out running together is a great one. I look forward to my first ever marathon at manchester and you guys have helped loads of people over these rotten times. Keep up the great work and wish you every future sucess! 🙌👌
Great video Ben! I felt the same running the Melbourne Mara half in December. After such a crap couple years it's great for events to be back on and life starting to get back to normal!
Well done Ben, you did amazing, yes that last 5k along the seafront was horrendous wasn't it, everyone who ran it said the same thing and unfortunately we can't do anything about the weather. At least the sun was out for us, it was a great morning's racing. Thanks for a great video.
The last 5k into the headwind were pretty tough but still managed to get a new pb on 1:20:44 which I'm so happy with. Great crowds and cheers going around the course too!
Other than the wind it was a lovely day out there! I ran a 4 minute PB (1:18:04 - came past you within the last mile) which was bittersweet because I knew more was there, ah well; that’s one to improve on for another day!
Well done Ben!! I gave you a shout as you were coming through the 6th or 7th km mark ( I was heading the other way and saw the gloves before I saw you tbh). Not a good day for me race-wise but no excuses. Chuffed to see you running so well and really glad to be to be out running events again. Felt a bit emotional when I finally crossed the line and will definitely come back stronger now Ive gotten this race out of the way.
Well done Jon! We all go through ups and downs as runners.. it’s a tough sport. Back stronger for you soon and lots learnt! Hope you’re recovering well!
The wind in the last 5k nearly broke me. Dashed my chances of a pb but sub 1:30 is a good base to work from this year and was just good to be out on closed roads again.
Amazing vlog Ben! Last 5k wind was defo a big grind. I knew it was coming on the 10 mile turn and I think the advantage of knowing what that wind feels like due to training on Brighton seafront most days, helped me mentally. I dug in and got a PB of 1:26:50. I would have been on for a sub 1:25:00 without the wind but I’m very happy with the achievement. A full 20 mins faster than when first run this event in 2019. Good signs for Manchester in a months time 😬
On Sunday, I ran a 25k race. It was a course that consisted of 5 loops. The wind was absolutely horrific. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like it ever before. Not only was it a physical battle for myself, but a true mental one, one in which I lost. Silver lining, I finished the race, but the mental toll is taking some time to get over.
Well done Ben, real gutsy run - I live down in Brighton so should be used to it… but got eaten up by that wind too! We ran alongside one another during the first 10k and looks like we crossed the finish line one after another too - good fun to share the roads with you. See you down on the coast again hopefully! 👊🏼
Great to see you on the course Ben. I was hoping to get a 1:45 but because of the wind had to settle for 1:48. Still a PB but that last stretch into the bitterly cold wind took it out of me. That said, I really enjoyed it. Great course, great race and great atmosphere.
Brilliant Ben! Wrll done!! 🙌🏼 That wind looked so tough and brought back memories of the Brighton full marathon i ran in 2019, Wind was exactly like that in that same last 5k!! 🥵🌪
Great video as always Ben. Saw you a couple of times on the course in your pink gloves and with your gopro. you do make it seem effortless! The last 3 miles in the wild was tough but the wind was a lot worse in 2019. Was really pleased with a 1.38 .
I did the Brighton half, although I was at he 1.36 end. That last 5 or 6k was horrible, all the end photos look like my eyes are closed! I was hoping to pick up speed and get a PB, but just holding 4:30 was a tough finish. Great result, Ben!
Awesome Ben well done. I’ve not done the Brighton 1/2 for a few years, but that wind is always a killer. I’m looking forward to the Elche 1/2 a week on Sunday, although I’ll be a little slower than you!
Well done Ben, did see you running past. Was chuffed to get a PB and knock 7 mins of my hm time despite the wind along the front. Did take hours to warm up afterwards.
I also died horribly in that wind and finished in 1.20 so couldn't quite top my PB from Reading in November (1.18). I was a shivering wreck by the time I got to my car.
Hey Ben, great content as always... I'm on week 5 of your marathon plan all going smoothly until a bit of a knee niggle, think its ITB related... Might be a lot of cross training for me for next couple of weeks but still determined to try and nab sub3hr mara Love the casual chat to camera whilst running at that pace! mega
Well done Ben! Those last 5kms were brutal - my splits are a very similar pattern to yours (albeit over 1min/km slower!) Would love to do it again though, Brighton is great and the support on the route was fantastic.
That was fantastic Ben! great effort and thank you for sharing! I also run a half this Sunday with a same crasy head wind here in the south of Athens Greece.. kind of fun actually but the last 4 k was not easy. Anyway, keep it up..lots of love .. I will see you in the next one!
Was meant to do an HM race as part of my Brighton Marathon prep, but race last week got cancelled, so instead planned a local route around my local streets. On the South Coast, a bit further west of Brighton, and we had a strong wind also. I had a 4 mile stretch directly into it from miles 9-12, then a bit of respite first half of last mile before back into it for last 1/2 mile and a bit. Whew.
Well done Ben. Yes, was a tad windy on the day.But had a good run and my first Half in over two years and after ankle surgery. Happy just got under the two hour mark 01:59:52 😁
so great to see race day at UK and joy of your run, even windy and tough conditions, good works, Ben. However, my living place Hong Kong is under bad condition due to covid right now. No race day for long time and even go out with sports need to wear a mask.. what a big different between us.. hope the pandemic here will soon leave and return to normal day. Cheers.
Well done that’s amazing! I ran the Brighton half back in 2020, I absolutely loved it! However the wind and rain was so strong it felt amazing crossing that finish line with a PB😊! I’m running the Brighton Marathon next month which will be my first marathon 😅🏃♀️
I did Brighton at the weekend and somehow managed a pb! The last 5k was brutal and I even stopped and walked for a few seconds. I feel better knowing that speedy people like you struggled too 🤣. Well done!

It was my first time doing the Brighton and I got a massive PB of 1:36:19 at the age of 49 but feel I need to adjust my training as I think there’s a lot more in me still.
Great job on the run. I also ran and knocked 8 minutes off my PB. Even managed negative splits in the wind. I was super happy with my results. Now I've just got to do it again for the full marathon in April 😃
Well done Ben great work in touch conditions, I did the Leicestershire half on Sunday after following your plan and had a great run. Taking a week off but what next ??
Set a new PB by 128 seconds (1:45:08). Was all set for around 1:44 until that last 5k. Still managed to make last mile and a bit my fastest of the day (7:40). Fabulous day!
I ran Brighton it was my first half marathon since taking up running in 2019! Very happy to do it in 2 hrs 11 minutes especially with that wind in the last 3 miles 😁

Your pace whilst vlogging for a half marathon in a headwind, is 2 mins faster than my fastest ever single mile. Let that sink in Ben. 1%'ers
exactly. some people are just gifted and others who are not should never forget that or let it interfere with your training and racing.

some people are just gifted and others who are not should never forget that or let it interfere with your training and racing.
Brilliant👍👌
Hi Ben! Love your channel. I remember you mentioning how you've worked hard on your cadence. But I think it might be hurting your stride length.
Remember it's the Manchester marathon that's the end goal, the Half wasn't about the time then, it was about the workout under race conditions,
That wind was horrible for the last few miles! I still ended up getting a pb of 1.44 at Brighton though!
