Hi, Laura. I am a Consulting Rosarian via the American Rose Society. I garden in Zone 7. Gardeners in warmer zones do not bury the bud union. We winterize our roses by covering the bud union with mulch, then pull back the mulch in the spring once there is no chance for an overnight freeze. I love your videos!
What kind of mulch? I have been leaving some leaves on mine over the winter. The rise bush is up by my house and I have a big tree that drops leaves late fall. I have noticed the leaves blow up under the rose bushes and they grow really good in the spring. Is this good enough?
ive been watching videos on bare root roses for days and i must say that you are the ONLY ONE who demonstrated how deep to plant the rose. holding the bare root rose to the camera and intentionally pointing to where the graft union is and how deep to bury it (AT 9MIN: 35 SECS). THANK YOU!!!!

Hi Laura, I was surprised to learn in this video that you bury the graft union. With so many other grafted plants (like a Japanese maple for example) it seems like you have to make sure to not bury the grafts. Could you explain why roses should have that part buried? Thank you!
I was confused by this as well. I've only ever planted a potted Rose and the graft union is above soil, why would it be different than a bare root rose?
I’m glad I’m not the only one confused by that. I don’t know much about grafting though so I figured she knows what she’s doing. Maybe she’ll address it in the recap video.
Ok, so I just looked it up and it is recommended if you’re planting roses in zone 5 and below to bury the grafting union to protect it from freezing temps. Zone 6 and above can plant them with the grafting union above the soil. So that confirms that she really knows what she’s doing!
David Austin roses recommends to bury the graft union below soil. I have been burying the graft union in my roses for a decade now and it works great. I know there is a big debate about to bury or not to bury.

I will never not be jealous of how she just steps on the spade and it chunks down so easily. We have so much glacial till in the part of PA I live that I can't dig a hole for an annual or bulb and not hit a bunch of rocks let alone anything bigger.
I always wonder how much faster her day would go if she didn’t have to walk across the street to set up a camera in the truck to walk back across the street to get the roses to walk back across the street to get in the truck 😂 Trying to capture all of the walking clips would be so frustratingly extra for me.
I love every every video you offer us- never miss! I never see you preparing soil before planting with compost-just bio-tone. Since I am quarantining and not going out as much as possible I don't have any compost to help my terribly hard clay soil. But I do have plant tone from last fall- yay! Is that enough?

It is so relaxed there compared to here. We are in full lockdown as are all our nurseries and we have social distancing. It might be time to broaden our resources and knowledge base on "critters" and our practices that intersect with wilder ones. Your state's Dept. Of Conservation resources would be a place to start.

I live in Utah, Zone 6b, and I LOVED when you dug in that shovel to plant the first rose. The way the soil broke up when you pulled it up tells me you have the exact same soil as we do: clay, clay, and more clay. It gives me hope that my garden can look beautiful, too!
Can't wait to see these in bloom! I've had my eye on this variety for a while. One question, have you thought about using gopher cages around the roots? Not sure if there is a reason you wouldn't want to use those. Thanks for all the great videos Laura and Aaron!

Laura, I live in Southern CA and we have a huge gopher problem. I plant just about everything in Root Guards. The gophers have never gotten any of the plants I put in them. I get them at my garden center.
Roald Dahl was my absolute favorite author for many many years growing up, heck I still enjoy his books now, so now I have to get myself some of these❤ And that color is my favorite!!

Wow, Erin did good. Those are probably my favorite DA rose. That color is almost mysterious. It’s not orange or peach, or yellow but wow is it beautiful. Tfs and I’m excited about all the changes for y’all. 👏🏻💕👏🏻

I just had two roses delivered from Jackson & Perkins, the roses didn't look near as pretty as yours, so I called them and they are sending one replacement and being they were out of one of them I had to order a different one 😢. Hope these will look better and not sad. Their planting instructions were hard to understand, you however cleared everything up and I just finished replanting them! I am going to give these a chance but my hopes are not high. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and your beautiful garden!

I plant my bare root Rose's differently. I make a hill of soil in the hole. Then place the rose on the hill, spreading the roots around the hill, then fill in hole. That's the way I learned to do it. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks🌷🌺

Hi Laura, in the spring I'm getting Old fashioned radish pink roses. It is suckers or runners off my Mom's plant. Was thinking of first taking them off her huge rose bush. Someone told me to replant them into potatoes which a hole which has been drilled into the centre of the potato. Then planted in the ground. Adding a mixture of manure & soil which has been mixed before handed, then added around the roses. Have you ever heard of this done before? The other thing was thinking of trying is getting a different kind of roses, & planting them in huge pots (barrel type of pots)beside my driveway on bothsides. Then have garden boxes filled with lavender , & possible poppies or aster flowers planted with the purple lavender. The garden boxes are going to be a dark brown color. Which should stand up with the coloured flowers, & the repurposed emergency ladders, I remade into to a border line on both sides of the driveway. Which are made up of rope threaded through the rings of the ladder. But only using the top hole of the top of the side of one ladder rung. The ladder rungs are a mixture of colors for each rung. I have a huge ditch which is deep on both sides of my driveway filled with a mixture of grass & last year white daisies & Indian paint brushes also showed up the ditches too. So what do you think?
Oh my! I always learn something new each time I see your videos. I ran back to my garden after your video. Yes, I did not burry the graft union for my roses. What happens if I don't burry the graft union below the soil for my roses. I did that for couple of my roses. Fortunately they survived this winter. Should I dig them up and adjust their position in the soil? Can you please explain what plants other than roses need their graft union under the soil and why?
Laura, Please don’t laugh when I say this, but all this time that I’ve been watching your video’s, I had no idea what David Austin Roses were. I know, I know, I’m a novice at this, but I’m learning, lol! I was thinking that it was a “brand”, which it is, but they are so much more. A great idea to keep gophers from eating bulbs or roots is to inset some mesh wire under / around your plants’ root ball. It has saved many of ours!

Someone told me to replant them into potatoes which a hole which has been drilled into the centre of the potato. Then planted in the ground. Adding a mixture of manure & soil which has been mixed before handed, then added around the roses. Have you ever heard of this done before? The other thing was thinking of trying is getting a different kind of roses, & planting them in huge pots (barrel type of pots)beside my driveway on bothsides. Then have garden boxes filled with lavender , & possible poppies or aster flowers planted with the purple lavender. The garden boxes are going to be a dark brown color. Which should stand up with the coloured flowers, & the repurposed emergency ladders, I remade into to a border line on both sides of the driveway. Which are made up of rope threaded through the rings of the ladder. But only using the top hole of the top of the side of one ladder rung. The ladder rungs are a mixture of colors for each rung. I have a huge ditch which is deep on both sides of my driveway filled with a mixture of grass & last year white daisies & Indian paint brushes also showed up the ditches too.

Oh my! I always learn something new each time I see your videos. I ran back to my garden after your video. Yes, I did not burry the graft union for my roses. What happens if I don't burry the graft union below the soil for my roses. I did that for couple of my roses. Fortunately they survived this winter. Should I dig them up and adjust their position in the soil? Can you please explain what plants other than roses need their graft union under the soil and why?
Laura, Please don’t laugh when I say this, but all this time that I’ve been watching your video’s, I had no idea what David Austin Roses were. I know, I know, I’m a novice at this, but I’m learning, lol! I was thinking that it was a “brand”, which it is, but they are so much more. I did a little research (which is what I do when I know that I don’t know), and I now understand the importance of the “brand”. I learn so much from you, so any info you can provide will be helpful.
