I really enjoyed this video. I have great memories of my father teaching me how to care for fine leather shoes. Every few years we would go to Florsheim and get fitted for boots. When he gave me his shine box was one of the best and saddest days of my life. Great content Kirby! Cheers!
Hey Kirby! - since you were giving me so many wonderful tips with your videos, let me give you one in return. I use my sanding drum on my Dremel crafting tool to smooth the edges of my soles. I find that I have more control with it, and it’s a lot easier, and it’s easier to avoid damaging the leather of the upper. Best, Matt
Some people say you shouldn’t mirror-shine Cordovan shoes, but seems like no issue with that. Is it not preferred to use Venetian Cream as conditioner on Cordovan? (First time I see someone using Renovateur)
@@kimberly_erin I don't believe that's the case. At least I havn't heard of any other Renovateurs other than normal ones(there are two, both for general usage).
Q1: Do leather soles require oiling or other treatment after being exposed such amount of water and/or salt (e.g. de-icing agent on streets)? Q2: Is there any difference in how you would treat a Rendenbach (J.R.) and a 'generic' leather sole in such a scenario?
Leather requires some moisture. After being expose to harsh conditions it looses a lot of it. So yes, it's always a good idea to treat the sole afterwards. For that purpose different stuff can be used, starting with just ordinary polish and leather balms to specially designed oils for soles. Q2 - no.
Where abouts are you based? In cities like New York it is a common practice to prevent icing on the roads. The downside is the damage it can do to high quality leather shoes.
Hi Kirby, Great video...man I'm so confused. For year's, I've been watching your tutorials. I remember vividly, you warning against using pate de luxe on cordovan. Since, It contained solvents. Solvents would harm the fiber structure of cordovan. How often would you use paté de luxe? What's changed?
Another brilliant tutorial. Q: How regular should you use leather cleaning soap OR saddle soap on calf leather shoes? (I just ask as I try to keep the use of renomat to the minimum)
Question: When using "Saphir Medaille d'Or Renovateur Crème", do you always need to follow up with "Saphir Medaille d'Or Crème Pommadier" or is the Renovateur enough if your shoes are not scuffed or in need of extra pigment?
Hey what do you do when the cleaning product - whatever it is - soaks straight into the leather in blotches and spots, and stays there! I bought I nice pair of tan $200 double monks for ten bucks from a charity store, but now they're ruined because I just used my usual cleaning methods on it. They have these ugly stains now! I've left them out in the sun to dry out...will see how that goes. Otheriwse I'll just recolour them a darker colour I guess..... Any ideas Kirby, or others?
Missed videos like this. This is Kirby at his best. Best videos usually about the how to use and FAQ series.

Those boots are amazing.
Exactly what I was looking for. Very informative, thanks!

Thank you for the tip! I will keep that in mind next time I try to sand the edges.
Super helpful. Just picked up a few things from your storefront, and now I will put them to use. Thanks
Will there come a video where you cover working with waterdamged calf skin?
Good idea. If that is something you would like, then we can certainly look into making another video like this one. Thank you for the feedback
Great video. I’m still working on chasing the mirage and achieving that high quality mirror shine.

This renovateur is a different formula specifically for Cordovan.

@@i.o.3563 you are correct, thank you, I meant to say the Cordovan cream polish.

The similarity of steps, to women putting on make-up is amazing.
I never thought about that. Interesting comparison!
Impressive!
Great video
which last is the boots?
Never had to deal with salt damage on my shoes (It's illegal to salt our roads) but I might move and this could be very useful. Thanks Kirby!

@@kirbyallison I'm from Oregon. It's illegal to salt our roads because if environmental concerns.
Why no care for the suede? Wont it need nourishment and waterproofing?
No need to nourish the suede, brushing it with a crepe brush is sufficient enough.
It MUST be waterproofed. I would have washed, nourished and waterproofed those boots if I was doing this work.
@@shakezmaybe3192 its still leather, and leather needs nourishment
It seems like you didn’t touch the suede part of the shoes. Any reason why?

Emil you don’t need to add shoe cream if they aren’t scuffed, and if you aren’t looking for more shine.
Why my saphir shoe creame cant adsorb to the leather?
The suede is good to go. Durable and only needs a good shampoo and a brush occasionally.
