The musician Pogo rose to fame as an early UA-cam star, gaining notoriety for his Disney remixes and eventually making official remixes for the company. However, after a series of controversies and vague apologies, his reputation hasn't really recovered. Let's take a look at his legacy and what it all means!

I'm autistic and have developed several disorders due to trauma. This does not contribute to bigotry at all. I hate it when people try to use this as an excuse. It doesn't even explain anything. It's completely separate to bigoted actions. It might mean that you express those bigoted thoughts in weird ways (such as expressing it in company that would not respond well to such comments) but it does not affect you having those beliefs in any way.
All neurodiverse and traumatised people can be assholes, as much as they can be wonderful people. Neither of which is caused by their neurodivergency

Frankly, I don't believe any of his apologies. I've seen a lot of people out there who spew a lot of hate and then make half-hearted, self-pitying "apologies" where they're not really sorry for what they said or believe, just that they said it in an inflammatory way.

@@FloorPills yeah, in fact, those with ADHD and/or ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), such as myself, are WAY more likely to be part of the LGBTQIA+ community. The reason behind this is unknown, but it’s very ironic he would use ASD as an excuse for homophobia.

I'm bipolar, but that doesn't mean I go on homophobic rampages. In fact, I'm non binary and I support the people around me.
I remember when the homophobic rant first got some attention, surprised it took so long for someone to cover it in a retrospective video like this. Was hugely disappointing then and still hugely disappointing now.
This is my first time hearing about this rant of his...and it makes me think: whenever i witnessed homophobic tiktoks/videos/posts from 2021-22, there was always an alarmingly large group of ppl that would essentially be all like "hell yeah i fking agree w/ you 😂💯". Since i hadn't discovered his controversy back in 2018, i was wondering if u could tell me if ppl ever "took his side" in a similar way? Or by sheer miracle, were most ppl back just then very appalled by what he said?

I didn't even know any of this. I thought he was just the "hahah, funny time traveller musician makes trendy songs from 2020 in 2006", i thought he was just underrated, but now it all makes sense why his channel seem abandoned.

I remember when Pogo had a personal twitter (that is long gone by now) but would say incredibly transphobic and bigoted things there. Dude was SO full of himself too. Pretty much thought he'd invented plunderphonics. 🙄 No idea if he's changed. Sad because I do love his music.

I find it so funny that he played Celeste even though that game was made by queer people and has a trans protagonist.
I think the fact it's obviously the story of a trans person and he didn't seem to notice shows how shallowly rights wingers tend to look at things, it's a all to common trend that they do.

I wouldn't say Celeste is "obviously trans". If I recall correctly, the main Celeste dev didn't even know they were trans until after the game was finished.
Most of the "trans references" are present near the end of the game.

We played Pogo at our Pride Parade (Dublin) for our float years and years ago. The thing I find very funny about the whole situation is that in most other cases, I think his career would still survive, but he wildly underestimated how gay his audience was. Since his "the pulse shooting was good tho" video, all I've heard about him from other gays was "I used to listen to him but then...". He shot himself in the foot and then decided to keep shooting the same foot to make it better. I legitimately wouldn't be surprised if the guy was ultra closeted and that's not because of the whole "he hates gays cause he is gay" thing. The gaydar just goes wild, you know.

As a person, I genuinely cannot stand him. He just sounds so revolting to me. Which is sad as hell considering I loved his music. If someone I once respected doesn’t even respect me as a person, their work isn’t worth it at this point.

So my ex boyfriend introduced me to Pogo and was probably his most played artist back in the early 2010s. I associate his music so much with my ex I couldn’t listen to it without my heart ache, but now that I know that he’s such a hateful person it makes it that much easier to put his music to rest. It’s a shame Bloom was my favorite.

I know this was a long time ago, but if you’re still interested in this genre of music it’s very much alive and doing well! There are many artists making music that (in my opinion) is better than pogos. Efryo, OneSimpleGamer, Travis Glover to name a very small amount of them.

I was never a huge fan of pogo and I didn't find his stuff in the early UA-cam days, but I heard a lot of it on Tumblr in the early 2010s and can probably say he was an influence on me as an aspiring edm producer back then. As a member of the lgbt community though, saying I was extremely disappointed with the kind of person he would turn out to be would be an understatement.
Never a fun subject, but in light of his work making the rounds on tiktok it's probably important to remind people of the kind of person he is. I've also been in similar communities where enough time has passed that people are now fans of artists who were once disowned by the community for things like sexual assault, and while it's exhausting to discuss things like that it's important for people to know the full story there.
I gotta laugh about him idolizing ben shapiro and saying he wants to be just like him. Oh, you're just like him alright, pogo. Another cookie cutter alt righter making a fool of himself online and desperately trying to stay "relevant" and "hip with the kids."
Except unlike Ben Shapiro, Pogo is actually talented.

It fucking hurts. I adore Pogo's music, nothing quite sounds like him. And it hurts so much to know that, even if his apology was genuine, even if he is telling the truth about not really believing that stuff, he still spread that garbage around. And I feel like a dick for continuing to listen, because his art means so much to me.
You may enjoy artists like Dainumo, who also make “Plunderphonics” - or Vektroid, who created the vaporwave album Macintosh Plus :)

I found out Pogo was a homophobe and anti-feminist via a tumblr post way before 2016. Probably 2014-2015. With some thorough searching, that post or some others about his views might surface, but yeah, it was known that he was a hateful person before his rants were uploaded. They just put the final nail in the coffin.

Brent Morgan is another Disney cover artist with abuse allegations. whenever I hear his acoustic covers of Disney songs that go viral on TikTok I have to scroll past, it’s a bummer his music is so widely used and yet not a lot of people know about this. there’s one big one he has that gets used a lot that’s a transition of This Is What Dreams are Made Of (you know, Lizzie McGuire movie, hey now hey now) starting with the original song “now everything’s technicolor” and then goes into his acoustic cover. He also does acoustic covers of Kiss The Girl that I hear a lot on my FYP given that I’m a super fan of The Little Mermaid (also apparently he plagiarized that cover? which is weird bc it’s a cover like how lazy do you have to be to use someone else’s style and chords and modifications of the existing melody and changing the key to the same different key that wasn’t the original key 🤦). I try to leave comments on videos using that sound so people know, I’d say around 99% of people using it have no clue and just picked it bc it was a trend and sounded nice. I feel bad having to be the bearer of that news on those videos since they’re usually like announcement posts or Disney vacation posts so I don’t really comment that often and will just skip the video entirely.
I went to a concert held by Alice Glass. She kept on drinking and threw up 3 times. I felt sick when she played CC songs, as much as I loved them. For some reason, everyone in the crowd was being…rude? To Alice? They probably came from TikTok or something. It made me feel terrible.

The only quality Pogo has himself anymore is being very punchable. I still remember the orlando night club shootout response video of his and how I incredibly angry I was, and still am, at him. There's just too much to love by LGBTQ+ creators and allies for me to try and justify separating art and artist and 'death of the artist', especially when it's so blatant. It's just not worth it for me. Saying that there's a 'lot to love' about LGBTQ and allied creators already shows a bias. It sounds like you're trying to giddy giddy LGBTQ people to get brownie points. Almost all of the music i listen to is from pedophilic or homophobic creators and I am not either of those things. It's not like they're earning too much money anyway, because there are LITERALLY 2 MILLION OTHER PEOPLE LISTENING TO THEM EVERYDAY. Was there a reason you didn't touch on the sadistic response Pogo had towards the Pulse massacre? I feel like that was also a very significant thing to mention.
I reference that in the video, saying that I can't show the worst part of his video (in my opinion) because my video might get demonetized. In discussing and analyzing anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric, unfortunately I have to be aware of that.
You know, I remember during the time of early Internet. it was common for people to say things that were controversial as a joke. I don't know why but no one ever questioned it.
And it was just accepted when teenagers or even adults would say "you're a f*g" or "What are you R***rded?" as an insult.
And I've noticed these same Alt right people still act like that, like their stuck in time 20 years ago. Not wanting to grow up and realize that other people exist besides them.

I am open to people’s growth, no matter how ignorant they were in the past (I’d be a hypocrite otherwise) but Pogo hasn’t showed any real sympathy, regret, and especially no sign of activism. It’s boggling how he admits to deliberately posting unprompted triggering posts just to upset marginalized people but then judge them for reacting to it. What a clod…

When a remix of the Pogo song started to trend on TikTok a few months ago, I was confused why so many people were fine with making him somewhat relevant again. The relative short attention span of the internet for people who say some really awful things makes me worried.
I'm in kind of a similar boat. I still see queer furries sharing work from Halley Labs/Emma Essex around despite the fact that multiple sexual assault allegations came out against her years ago. Sometimes (esp on platforms that reuse/repost content like tiktok) the origin of a piece can get totally forgotten or lost. Which, is a problem in of it self for sure, but maybe that has a little to do with it ...
Regardless, I do agree that we forget pretty quickly... a lot of companies and influencial individuals seem to purposefully take advantage of it, making a response and then laying low until public attention and outrage lowers, then continuing with business as usual when most are no longer emotionally invested or really aware of what's going on currently. The more time goes by, the more people who don't know about the incident will increase as well....
It makes me mad when companies or individuals 'tone down' their problems enough to be presentable (i.e less visibly immoral or problematic) but not enough that you could say they actually recognized what they did was wrong, or, more importantly to me, that they were willing to do the right thing or change anything that might affect their profit margins or support base... just enough that the more hidden problems or systems are less offensive.. and that you get told 'well, they stopped doing X' when you express continued criticism or not wanting to support them.

Until now I was completely unaware of any of this - I thought Pogo was just "that guy that makes those movie remixes." This is definitely a good breakdown of the whole situation. I will say though, as well as you towed the line and being fair, I personally don't think it was deserved in this case. He used direct and blatant language in his bigotry, used every excuse in the book to try and save face (being mentally ill, bicurious, or living in a podunk town that casually uses slurs doesn't excuse or justify any of his behavior - I myself m all three of those things myself while being openly gay. Context is not a get-out-of-jail-free card), and has rubbed elbows with and respects and aspires to be like a bunch of dangerous far right pundits. At some point, if it looks like a duck, acts like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's a damn duck.

I was raised in a conservative household and during that period where offensive jokes and sjw slander was common I started falling down that rabbit hole. As a dumb little kid I was repeating rhetoric I didn't even understand. Even when I thought I wasn't an actual bigot, I realized later how disgusting my behavior was to my peers and friends. Realizing I was trans definitely saved me from this shitty path. Being trans in that kind of community was a constant slap in the face and a reminder that the people I surrounded myself with weren't good people. If I were cisgender I would have no reason to question them. Being trans made me realize what happens when you're the one they're making fun of.
I thought I was the only one who was still bothered by this. I remember there was a top comment on the apology video saying "These people should have known better than to take you seriously, but I guess they're too stupid to realize it was a joke," and Pogo hearted that comment. He was not sorry because he seems to blame those who got offended.

i really did like pogo and his music back in middle school. His songs, especially "Forget" were very important to me back then. I don't think I have enjoyed listening to his music since I found out about his homophobia about 5 years ago. It's rather ironic that the reason why his old tracks lived on were because of gay people in internet communities like the animation community on UA-cam.
I don't think I could ever accept an apology from him, especially since I don't see him making any sort of change. I think Pogo was the first person where his homophobia shocked me. I've heard the same old about "gays r an abomination" and whatnot but I've never heard anyone in my personal life who were glad a shooting happened because it involved gay people. Even the most homophobic and edgy people in my life still felt shock and hurt from the pulse shooting. Even if he has gay friends or if he experimented himself, I can’t accept his apology.
It's sad that I can't really listen to his music anymore but his style really is unique. I don't think I have found someone who has come close to the same genre(?), but I want to. I still find nostalgia for some of his tracks when they come up on my TikTok fyp but not because of Pogo. I find nostalgia for those tracks because of the memories I built in them from middle school. To an extent, I've had to grapple with this issue in regards to Disney itself. I genuinely respect and enjoy Disney films for advancing the art of animation. And I think their films get misunderstood in an age where Pixar and Studio Ghibli became more dominant as animated films.
At the same time, there's aspects of their legacy dating back to Walt Disney himself that are uncomfortable: litigation, conservatism, racial/gender/sexual orientation stereotypes, anti-communism and blacklisting former employees, and so on.
One of the ways I've tried to reconcile this is recognizing that Disney animation's legacy is not restricted to Disney itself: artists like Richard Williams and Don Bluth both learned aspects of the Disney style (Twelve Principles of Animation, Full animation, pathos and sentimentality) but took them in different directions. Recent films like Klaus are clearly influenced by the Disney style (with former Disney artists working on it) but with their own spin.
But the art vs artist discussion is often not easy.

It is sad. I used to feel safer on the internet too. Specifically UA-cam. I found out I was gay here and found some positive gay role models and made friends. Now I feel like I have to be careful what videos I click on so I don't get sent down a weird alt right rabbit hole. But I'm glad there are still some good people on here.

I said this in the community post announcing this video coming out- but the crazy thing is that I’d never heard of Pogo before. And what makes it even more wild was that his most popular videos came out at the time that my Disney fandom was making a strong resurgence along with an intensely enjoyable discovery of house/trance/lo-fi/mashups and remixes back in high school. If I’d heard of him, it likely would’ve been life-altering.
It’s such a bummer when someone with so much talent and who is so closely aligned with our interests turns out to be against other core parts of our being. I’m glad I dodged the heartbreak I’d have felt if I’d gotten into his work in my teens only to find out his homophobic views.
