  • On our third day of our 2023 duck hunting trip in Texas we setup on a pond that had been loaded with wigeon that were bouncing between it and a nearby wheat field. I had brought out my 28 gauge in hopes of getting some close decoying shots but due to a lack of wind we had trouble getting the birds to decoy like we had hoped for. We were still able to get plenty of birds in tight though and got to watch an incredible show along with it. Hope you enjoy!

    To be honest, this man does a lot of effort in order to produce a beautiful video, so when you go hunting, photographing, editing, and agreeing with all this on your own, this is a very beautiful thing. I hope you continue with your successes

    About gauge, a 410 at 1200fps has the same range as a 10ga at 1200fps. What you do not have is pattern density. You also cannot stuff that much big shot into a smaller gauge shell. Over decoys in pot holes I liked the little guns.

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  9 місяців тому

      Yep the lack of pattern density past 30 yards is definitely the short coming of the 28 gauge. This gun patterns great but there's only so many pellets in a 7/8 oz load

    okay i love your videos, there was a hilarious moment there where you wen't from filming that widgeon calling to the next moment of it being stone dead and the dog picking it up. there should have been a "2 moments later" transition there LOL keep up the good work man i love your videos and im currently watching them to build up the hype for tomorrows MN Early Goose/Teal.

    The 12 gauge is king when it comes to pass shooting or just in general in my mind. I have debated getting a 20 gauge but go back and forth on the range and power of the 12. I think the 28 gauge is a fad not sure I would ever buy one. You need high powered expensive shells to make it hit well it seems. 12 gauge rules.

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  9 місяців тому +1

      I think it would be a great gun for really skinny water but it was a little lacking on this hunt when they were skirting the decoys. Gonna just stick with the 12 gauge for most of this coming season

    • @tinkandtory
      @tinkandtory 9 місяців тому +1

      Well for waterfowl it may be a fad, but 28ga has been around a long time. I shoot ducks with mine in timber and it knocks them stone dead.

    that was a really good video and you should use a 20 gauge shotgun they are good at getting ducks and geese and coots to so try to use a 20 gauge shotgun for any county that has opening season for duck in stead of the early season for goose and teal so good luck with your next duck hunting video you should try wisconsin opening day of duck hunting their are some good ereas for the ducks and geese to land

    Two questions, the 28ga in the vide is a mossy SA 28? And did you descide to switch over to sitka waders now from high and dry?

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  9 місяців тому

      Yep that’s the gun, it’s a fun shooting little thing but not sure how well it’ll hold up over time. Seems pretty cheaply made. I haven’t switched to any particular wader, just been trying out some different ones the last couple seasons. I was borrowing the Sitka ones from Cory for a couple months to give them a test

    Hey man. From an ethics perspective 28 gauge ain’t it. I get it it’s more fun. But those bids don’t deserve to get injured because you wanted to shoot a low power shotgun.

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  9 місяців тому +1

      @tinkandtory 9 місяців тому

      Plenty of people shoot 28ga on ducks. Better shells, tighter patterns, and a different environment are needed. This was a bit big of an area for a 28.

    • @brentniedermeier5272

      1300 FPS is the same whether it’s from a .410 or a 10 gauge. Absolutely no difference in power. The difference is one has 1/2 oz of shot vs 2 1/8 oz of shot. A 28 gauge with the appropriate payload is actually considered to be ballistic perfection, so when paired correctly it is just as effective as a 12 gauge
