Kayak Jump Shooting Ducks In A Marsh | Dream Bird At Last Light
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 вер 2024
- I'd been itching to get on a kayak duck hunt up here in MN so when I spotted a bunch of teal on a public land marsh I headed out for the last couple hours of light to try some jump shooting while also scouting the area for future outings. Things got off to a hot start as there were ducks and geese spread throughout the marsh and I was able to sneak in close on quite a few birds. I explored as much as I could before making a last minute attempt to get under a flight line of sandhill cranes that were returning from fields in the hopes of getting a shot at a dream bird mine. Hope you enjoy!

Dude just casually hits a Scotch double on some of the fastest game birds and just nonchalantly says “ok, I gotta slow down a second” what a legend 😂
Teal are actually one of the slowest ducks lol
@@colbyjohnson3793 They’re much faster than many game birds. I never said the fastest duck. You ever seen a pheasant or chukar fly? Those things look like semis flying though the air.
i have only done that once on teal and once on dove
Teal are pretty slow. Buffleheads are probably the hardest duck to hit
You’ve never grouse hunted apparently
hey man i just wanted to let you know the things you do really make a difference in the hunting industry introducing kids like me and other people into this type of stuff… thank you
Thanks Dalton! I can only hope that I'm able to set a postive example for new hunters and help them learn through my mistakes and successes
Beauty of a hunt. That crane at the end. I could feel your pain when it landed in the tall stuff. Luckily that unlike a duck they go down like a B-52 bomber and leave a trail.
Haha I was mainly just worried that it would still be alive when I got there. The idea of fighting a crane in thick cattails when I couldn’t use my gun (past shooting light by the time I got to it) had me a little worried. You are exactly right about them leaving a trail though. Didn’t take any time at all to track him down!
Man you continue to amaze me with the spots you find! Awesome stuff!
Thomas 5 mins into his hunt: Well, I've been out here for five minutes & shot four birds
Me five hours into my hunt w/ no birds: :/
Congrats on the crane and the double! I wish I could shoot like you!
I appreciate it! It’s a different world up here in the prairie pothole region!
A HUGE congrats on the Sandhill!! What a great way to end a perfect afternoon on the slough.
I appreciate it! Always the sweetest feeling when something unexpected like that happens to end a hunt
@@HokeOutdoors what abt showing how u cooked it? 😉
What a freakin cool place to hunt. Amazing!
That was a really great hunt to watch, thanks for the helpful info and great content
Thanks Matt!
Dude this was sick, especially on a solo hunt! You won’t forget this one
Thanks brother!
Congrats on the sandhill!
I appreciate it! Doesn't get much better eating than the ribeye of the sky!
Nice job I love hunting out of my kayak
Thanks Karl! It's definitely my preferred style of hunting in most situations
I have said this about your whitewater goose hunts, but this is one of the most unique hunt videos I have ever seen. Congrats on the crane, and just know that this would be my dream hunt, too.
Thanks brother! I really like mixing up hunting styles like this, I always learn a lot and the change of methods is fun! The crane was definitely the cherry on top though
Sandhill Crane: rib-eye of the sky!
I love your kayak hunts keep it up
Thanks Dillon! Got another one coming out tomorrow!
@@HokeOutdoors hell yea! Your videos have inspired me to try it out here in Idaho, I just have to wait until October 19th for season to open, I like your videos a lot more than other UA-camrs that have big names and just sit in blinds, it’s more entertaining to watch you float the river and take the chance and the risk
Love the vids man keep doing the kayak jump shoot videos they’re my favorite
Thanks brother! Hoping to do a few more while I'm up here in MN
Congrats on your first sandhill!
That was awesome place with loads of birds. Congratulations on your first ever Sandhills. Keep up the good work with videos!
Thanks Cooper! Gonna have more coming soon!
Great Video Thomas! I've been waiting for this one to be released. What a great evening you had.
Thanks Elliot! Wouldn't have happened without you and Titus egging me on to go out there
Super cool Kayak Float. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! I was doubting that you were going to get a crane when you said you could kill one. Especially when you were just paddling around. Congratulations on getting your dream bird! Keep up the great work.
Thanks Leyton! I wasn't expecting it to happen either but that made it just a little bit sweeter when it all went down
Just a heads up... Jump shooting in Minnesota is only legal on rivers and streams less than 100yd wide. Marshes, ponds, lakes, etc unfortunately you have to be partially hidden in vegetation.
Nice sunset shot with the cranes talking in the background!!! Congratulations on the crane.
Thanks Aaron! Was on of the most incredible sights I’ve seen in a while!
Just watched this, and I was rooting for you on the Sandhill. Nice hunt!
Awesome video! Great to see you bag your first SH crane. Super cool birds!!
Thanks Sean! They sure are some neat birds, great eating too!
That cattail complex looked amazing. A shit ton of ducks, ha. Great hunt!!
Thanks buddy! Was more birds than I'm used to! Never had a hunt like this back home
As usual great shooting Thomas!! Really enjoyed watching!
Beautiful spot for a jump shoot!! Congtats on the "Stork"!!!!!!
Thanks brother! It was one of the coolest spots I've ever had the pleasure of exploring!
Hands down best video . Amazing man , coming from bird numbers in va to where you are now . Insane
It’s truely a different world for waterfowl in this part of the country compared to back on the east coast
This is exactly how I want to hunt ducks. I can’t have a dog and access to land can be difficult but there’s tons of swamps like this I can get out on in my area and very few other people on them. Really enjoyed this video thanks and great shooting. Too many other channels come with a bunch of ego and it’s annoying as hell.
This is why you go scout!! That looked like some serious fun!
I'd be excited to get wigeon thinking they were gadwall too 😂. Great video Thomas!
Thanks buddy!
great hunt
Thanks Dan!
Nice to see you shoot some ducks again. I have been doing good here in Finland finally. We don't have a limit but I have a personal limit. I shot 7 ducks in couple hours in saturday and decided to quit that morning. Hundreds of widgeons, teals and some pintails in that morning. Decoys worked perfectly. I am a newbie in decoying birds but I try to learn from you and other people like you.
On sunday I stayed much longer because not as many birds flying but some of them decoyed perfectly again. Shot 4 pintails and a teal.
Glad to hear the migration is starting to pick up out there! Were you hunting out of your boat or from shore this weekend?
@@HokeOutdoors Im hunting really up in the shores of baltic sea. Its really shallow bay so you just need waders but I had a boat. Most of the time I just walk to a good spot to setup
Awesome hunt!! Always enjoy watching your vids.
Thanks Dave! I appreciate you watching!
This looks exactly where I imagine "Where the Crawdad's Sing" is set in.
So awesome man. What a cool spot and great experience. That's so cool your out there
Thanks brother! It was a blast getting to check out that marsh for the evening
Nice hunt! Northwestern MN is the only place you can shoot the rib-eye of the sky but they are everywhere.
Awesome stuff
Thanks Zach!
I went on a Sandhill Crane hunt with my brother in Texas last year and when I went to bed all I kept hearing was the rolling squawk of cranes. Awesome hunt man!
Thanks Wayne! They definitely had a tendency to get stuck in your ears! How was the crane hunting out in TX?
@@HokeOutdoors We got a guided hunt up in the panhandle and it was -4 degrees that hunt. My brother and I were the only ones in the group to show up so I think the guides just took us to a field they had access to and nowhere near the X because we watched 100s of cranes fly past us. Later that day we found some public land and had a much more enjoyable time. I definitely want to do it again, but you definitely need to be in their flight path.
That was amazing!! Subscribed!
AWESOME job man!!!! That was a REALLY cool float/ jump shoot! Best of luck on the next one, and God Bless!!!👍🤗🙏
Thanks brother! Hoping to get back out in this marsh very soon!
beautiful, greetings from Italy

Absolutely legendary video just found your channel I’m gonna binge watch all of it great shootin man!!!!!!!!
Nice little evening hunt i really enjoy it well done

Good shooting man! Shooting siting in a kayak and a reflexive shot taking is not easy to do. Also love your enthusiasm about hunting and yes its wailway high being all alone on a hunt.
Beautiful place
Most insane hunt I’ve seen!
One of the craziest I've ever been on!
Really enjoyble hunt and one of best place marsh

Looks like you found a new area great video congrats on the limit and the Sandhill
Thanks Bob! Heading back up to that spot tomorrow I think!
Man u make me very envious of u bud. U are always getting to and finding amazing spots like this marsh to hunt. Around where im from here in North Central Okla theres nothing like what u are hunting. Honestly not only that but this time of yr there is NO BIRDS what so ever. I actually seen the first flock of geese yesterday….Sept 1st. Amazing hunt here bud. Hope your luck stays with u throughout the rest of the season.
Congrats for the first crane! 🍺
Awesome video again!
I appreciate it! Got more stuff coming out soon!
love these kind of vids would love to see more
That 2 for 1 was greasy!
Nothing better than a scotch double!
Holy cow what a hunt!
Way better than I expected!
Great hunt buddy. It’s far harder to jump shoot than it is to sit and wait.
I appreciate it! This was a pretty laid back jump shoot in comparison to the river hunts
AWESOME FLOAT!!! GLAD YOU GOT A CRANE!!!!
Great video! Looks like a bunch of fun
Nice 2 for one at the beginning!
Congrats Thomas that was fun to watch
Thanks Jordo!
Great job kid. If I had a kayak when I was younger it would have been awesome. Thanks for the cool video. Them Whitedevils were my favorite to shoot here in Texas.
Love the MN videos man!
Thanks brother!
Congratulations!! I let the bugs clean my crane skull and bleached it afterwards and placed it in a shadow box along with the shells to take it down. It makes a great trophy.
Thanks Mike! Wish I had seen this sooner cause that's a great idea, I'll have to do that with the next one that I get
Outstanding video, congrats on the crane !
Thank you!
Nice hunt thanks for taking us along
Well done everything you do is learning from you
First time watcher, totally enjoyed, I like the kayak idea, a bit of a problem here in Northern Australia, we have some pretty big crocs in here!!
Found a new subscriber 🤘

Thanks Todd! They're a damn fine eating bird, always a treat to get one!
Hello, you are a very good fisherman

Good work Thomas
Thanks Jeremy!
Awesome buddy!
Thanks Sean!
Amazing video, reminds me of my younger days.
Nice shot....
Great shooting and helluva track to zero in on that sandhill.
I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but if you mention it being a cattail complex you are hunting in this video, then the water you’re hunting doesn’t seem like a river or stream less than a 100 yards across. You need to make sure you or your kayak are partially concealed by a natural growth of vegetation-those first five birds looked like you took them, unconcealed in open water, which is illegal. If you truly were hunting a stream or river not more than 100 yards wide, then disregard the aforementioned illegality. Just wanted to make sure you’re aware if you didn’t know because Mn regs aren’t the easiest to understand.
Thanks Chad! Sorry I'm just now seeing this. I appreciate you mentioning the open water regulation. I had done some digging and asking around about that before season. The defintion I was sent to is the legal code for determining what constitutes open water. It reads as this "open water means an area that, during a year with normal patterns of precipitation, has standing water for sufficient duration to establish an ordinary high water mark. The term "open water" includes lakes and ponds but does not include ephemeral waters, stream beds, or wetlands." That's why I was able to jump shoot in a cattail marsh like this, since it's drawn down during the summer. I do appreciate the heads up though and 100% agree about the MN regs being tricky
12:24 an entire month of september goose hunting prepared you for this moment
Haha that’s a truth!
