- This is a video of how to disassemble the engine on a 1997 honda fourtrax 300fw. This is the same process you would use for the two wheel drive models with the exception of the side driveshaft and the front drive transfer case.

Thank you so much for the help. This is by far the best video I’ve seen when it comes to showing the whole process and how to do it. Plus you gave a lot of great tips. Plus you even have a video on the assembly. Your also very knowledgeable. Keep up the good work. Your doing great. I hope you continue to grow and become one of the bigger channels on UA-cam. You really deserve it.
Thanks man and thanks for watching. I'm glad I could help.
Really helpful vid thanks a bunch..I am one of those Muppets who removed the gearbox output shaft and all the gears fell about.been looking at the engine on my bench for years but yesterday rebuilt the gearbox and just gotta put it all back together .cheers..from the UK ..my quad is blue which I believe is the US version........
Good deal. Glad I could help!
Great videos. I bought a non running 300ex, when I removed the top end the piston has a lot of side to side movement on the wrist pin. Is this normal?
Me ajudou muito obrigado 😊

Another comment for ya so when the cases are split if I’m only doing my crank shaft can I leave my transmission alone and leave the bolts in the one side of the shift drum to hold it in place? It seems that would be the easiest option as I’m only after the crank shaft
I’ve always ordered 5/8” boat plug with a stripped out drain plug never gave me a problem
Might have to try that on the next one.
This video is great! Thank you! Do you know where I could get the full engine gasket set for this wheeler?
Hey mate noticed at the end of your video that its only the side case and the output shaft to change 2wd to 4wd. How do you mount the front transfer case as the crank casing doesnt have mounts for it. Got a 4x4 with rod knock and a mint 2x4 was hoping to do the 2x4 to 4x4 swap but looking at it thats a major issue ill run into. Cheers
I'm currently taking apart the engine, my question is that would I be able to remove the crank shaft without removing the transmission parts.
i got a '97 fourtrax, just rebuilt it about a month ago, 2 days ago i was riding and it started ticking, no knocking just ticking, i adjusted the valves and they were very tight, got them back to .006, but still ticks, any suggestions? thanks
I'm not sure what that may be. Sometimes the valves will loosen up shortly after a rebuild but the ticking will normally stop after readjusting. Is your oil level good?
I bought a non running 300ex and after top end tear down I have a lot of side to side movement of piston on the wrist pin, is this normal?
Yes you just do not want any movement at all up and down.
Hey buddy at the beginning, what are those plugs you took off with the flat head?
They are for setting the engine to top dead center. They give you access to the timing mark and the Allen head bolt to rotate the engine
@@FourwheelerDoctor thank you. Very much! Final question. The main brake line that comes from the master cylinder on the right handbrake, branches off to the front left and front right drum breaks. There is a small rubber line that goes to a metal that’s tucked underneath the bleed off valve and where the main brake line goes. This is rotted and broken off I’m not sure what purpose it serves, I wish I was more mechanically inclined. Hopefully this will help guide me.
@@robbyrus it is a vent line for the brake. Just replace it with a 1/4" rubber hose. Irrigation drip hose works great and can be picked up at the big box hardware stores.
@@FourwheelerDoctor Man, thank you so much. You are very responsive and helpful. You have a new subscriber
Can the clutch case be removed while still in frame?
Yes it can. I have a video for that. Lol

I bought a 1990 honda 300 fourtrax and the guy who had it pulled the rearend out and the part where the driveshaft hooks up to the motor. He pulled the while shaft out from the left side and all the gears fell to the bottom of the crank case. I hope I can get them back together. Any advice
Yes I had to fix one like that before. You might need a manual to tell you where all those gears go. In my video I didn't let everything fall apart like that so I didn't have step-by-step on how to put them back together.
@@FourwheelerDoctor I appreciate you getting back with me on this. I have some screenshots I took offline to help me get them back together. But I guess one of the gears or something is stopping the crank from turning over and I cant get the cam shaft to turn so I can get the 2 10mm bolts out.
@@FourwheelerDoctor I got it free'd up. I thought a gear had the crank in a bind but the piston actually had a stuck ring. I appreciate your help anyway. Your the go to man on these 300's I've learned alot from watching you. THANK YOU SO MUCH
@@codyswilley glad I could help
@@FourwheelerDoctor I just got the shift forks and shift drum back in. This was my first time doing this and man did i have some trouble lol. I got it done though.
I pulled the shaft out and all the gears fell in the motor oops😂
