  • Robert "Gene" McQuery grew up during the Great Depression in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He remembers as a teenager when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. By the time Gene was eligible to join the service, the war had already ended. Regardless, he wanted a change of life, so he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in September 1946. His first assignment was in post-Japan, recalling the aftermath of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was stationed there for nearly two years, working with radars. When the USAAF was abolished, Gene had to pick between the Army and Air Force. He chose the Air Force, where he could stick with his unit. In 1950, Gene was deployed during the outbreak of the Korean War, doing two tours in the country. Gene would go on to serve his country for 22 years until he was honorably discharged in 1972. Thank you for you're service, Gene.
